BPHS Ch.1 — Vyuha Cosmology (Vasudeva/Sankarshana/Pradyumna/Aniruddha), Paramatma in Jivas & A9 in Lagna

Vyuha cosmology (Parashara's account): Parama Purusha (both vyakta+avyakta) → three shaktis: Sri Shakti (sattva/Mahalakshmi), Bhu Shakti (rajas), Nila Shakti (tamas). Four cosmic Vyuha beings: Vasudeva (Sri Shakti/sattva-dominant), Sankarshana (tamas), Pradyumna (rajas), Aniruddha (sattva). Each contains all three gunas but is dominated by one. Chain of manifestation: from Sankarshana (tamas) = Mahan (Great One) born; from Pradyumna (rajas) = Ahankara (I-sense) born (rajas creates differentiation — all deities and distinctions arise from rajas); from Aniruddha (sattva) = Brahma (cosmic creative intellect) born. Three functions: Vishnu+Sri Shakti=sustains; Brahma+Bhu Shakti=creates; Shiva+Nila Shakti=destroys. Philosophical core: "Sarvesu ceva jivesu paramatma virajate — In all jivas, the Paramatma shines." Paramatma amsa vs Jiva amsa: in grahas and devatas, Paramatma amsa is dominant (less ahankara); in ordinary beings, Jiva amsa is dominant — the difference is in ahankara level, not ontological nature. "The goal is to increase the Paramatma within you through practice." Note: different Puranas give different creation accounts (Devi Rahasyam: Mahalakshmi first) — all are valid different perspectives on the inexpressible. Q&A: A9 in lagna = fortune (9th house) manifesting directly at the core of the person; very lucky; fortune in Kendra = excellent placement; affects who the person fundamentally is.

"In all the jivas, the Paramatma shines. Everything is stationed in Paramatma. The difference between gods and non-gods is not ontological — it is the level of ahankara. The goal is to increase the Paramatma amsa within you through practice."

Cosmology — Vyuha Doctrine (Parashara's Account)

The Starting Point

Vyakta + Avyakta Parama Purusha:

  • The Supreme Being with expressed (vyakta) and unexpressed (avyakta) aspects
  • Parashara does not name him; you can call him Narayana, Sadashiva, or simply Parama Purusha
  • Three shaktis emanated from this Supreme Being:
ShaktiGunaPersonification
Sri ShaktiSattvaMahalakshmi
Bhu ShaktiRajas(Saraswati in some descriptions)
Nila ShaktiTamas(Parvati in some descriptions)

The Four Vyuhas

From the Supreme Being, four cosmic beings emerged:

Vyuha BeingDominant GunaRole
VasudevaSri Shakti (Sattva-dominant)Sustains with Sri Shakti
SankarshanaTamasContains tamas energy
PradyumnaRajasContains rajas energy
AniruddhaSattvaContains sattva energy

All four contain all three gunas, but each is dominated by one.

The Chain of Manifestation

From Sankarshana (tamas): Mahan (the Great One) was born

From Pradyumna (rajas): Ahankara (the I-sense) was born

  • Rajas creates differentiation; the I-sense ("I am Vishnu," "I am Brahma") comes from rajas
  • Once ahankara came, all distinctions between Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, etc. arose

From Aniruddha (sattva): Brahma (the great personification of ahankara) was born

  • Brahma represents the cosmic creative intellect

The Three Functions

DeityShaktiFunction
VishnuSri ShaktiSustains the three worlds
BrahmaBhu ShaktiCreates the world
ShivaNila ShaktiDestroys the world

The Philosophical Core

"Sarvesu ceva jivesu paramatma virajate — In all the jivas, the Paramatma shines."

— PVNR

"Sarvam hi tatdam brahman, chitam hi paramatmani — Everything is stationed in Paramatma."

— PVNR

Paramatma and Jivatma:

  • In every being: two aspects exist simultaneously:
    • Paramatma amsa = the Supreme Soul's portion
    • Jiva amsa = the individual living portion
  • In grahas and devatas: Paramatma amsa is higher (less ahamkara)
  • In ordinary beings (you and me): Jiva amsa is higher
  • The difference between gods and non-gods is the ahankara level, not a fundamental ontological difference

"The goal is to increase the Paramatma within you through practice."

Different Puranas, Different Accounts

PVNR notes that creation is described differently in different texts:

  • Markandeya Purana (Devi Rahasyam): Devi-centric — first there was nothing, then Mahalakshmi appeared; she divided into Mahalakshmi/Mahakali/Mahasaraswati (sattva/rajas/tamas); each created one couple (Brahma+Lakshmi, Vishnu+Kali, Shiva+Saraswati)
  • Parashara's account: Vyuha doctrine with Parama Purusha + shaktis
  • Both are valid; different ways of expressing the same inexpressible truth

"Don't get caught with one account. All of them are different ways to look at the same thing. Because we are not capable of fully understanding this, let us leave it at that."

Q&A: A9 in Lagna

Question: If A9 (Arudha of 9th house) is in lagna, does it mean fortune increases with time?

Answer: No — not specifically "increases with time."

What A9 in lagna means:

  • 9th house = overall fortune; A9 = the tangible manifestation of that fortune
  • A9 in lagna = fortune in a Kendra (1st house) = excellent placement
  • Fortune manifests at the very core and essence of the person
  • Shows a very lucky person — fortune is not abstract or distant; it directly impacts who they are
  • Can manifest throughout life from birth, or more specifically when relevant dashas trigger it

"It is not like they are fortunate but cannot enjoy the fortune. The fortune affects the entire core of the person."
