General Principles for All Houses — Lord and Karaka, Marana Karaka Sthana

Parakrama Is Not Covered

Beyond verse 1, Parashara gives no combinations for parakrama — which make a person very bold and which make him a coward. It is fair to conclude that similar combinations apply.

What Is Good and What Is Bad for Any House

• Benefic association with a house is good for that house.
• Malefic association with a house is bad for that house.
• Lord of the house in quadrants and trines → good.
• Lord of the house in dusthanas → bad.
• Lord of the house associated with malefic planets or malefic signs → bad.
• Lord of the house associated with benefic planets and benefic signs → good.
• The karaka is treated like the lord of the house.

From verse 5: the lord or karaka in exaltation, own or friendly sign — in Rasi, Navamsa and the varga of the matter (D-3 for siblings) — is good.

Lord and Karaka = Two Bosses

"Lord of the house and karaka are like two bosses. The boss of the group and the program manager, like we mentioned earlier. So those are the key planets. If they are empowered, if they are in good company, the house flourishes."

For the 3rd house the two are the 3rd lord and Mars — the key planets of this chapter.

Mutual placement between the lord of a house and its significator always matters, as in the twelve-siblings combination (Mars in a trine from the 3rd lord):

• In mutual quadrants or mutual trines → they help each other.
• In shashtashtaka (6/8) or dwirdwadasa (2/12) → they do not help each other.

Marana Karaka Sthana — A Clarification

A student's question (asked after verse 3): Jupiter in the 3rd house is in Marana Karaka Sthana — so will the person lack initiative?

No. We do not say the 3rd house results will be weak. We say the houses owned by Jupiter will be weak.

"If a planet is in Marana Karaka Sthana, the house it occupies will get good results, but the house owned by it will get bad results."

The logic:

• It is not that planet's nature to give results of that house. A benefic, wherever he is, will try to give good results.
• Venus told to give 6th house results: he is the planet of good relations with people — the 7th house, not the 6th. He will oblige, but he has to work very hard for it. All his other responsibilities take a back seat.
• Jupiter in the 3rd: the 3rd house does not suffer. It is blessed by Jupiter. The other houses Jupiter owns suffer.

Example — Libra lagna, Jupiter in the 3rd in own sign (Sagittarius):

• Jupiter is 3rd lord and 6th lord.
• Sitting in the 3rd he has extra responsibility toward it. He works hard and gives good 3rd house results.
• In that process the 6th house suffers. 6th house results are destroyed.
