Vimshottari from Lagna vs Moon — Tribhagi & TP Dashas
When to use Vimshottari from Lagna vs from Moon: count planets in kendras from each — the stronger one (more planets) is the correct starting point. Lagna stronger → individualistic, acts on own convictions. Moon stronger → people-oriented, emotional responsiveness. Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha — the 3-cycle version, used when specific conditions apply. Tithi Pravesha chart dasha system: use Shastri (Ashtottari) style dasha, where the antardasha starts from the NEXT planet.
"Lagna shows action in the world. Moon shows reaction to the world. Which is stronger determines which reference is primary for Vimshottari."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Tribhagi Vimshottari: 2nd cycle Venus Dasha = July 2001 to March 2008. TP chart uses Shastri (Ashtottari) dasha — antardasha starts from X+1, cycles through, ends with X.

Vimshottari Dasha — Lagna vs. Moon vs. Sun
Three Reference Points
| Seed | Stands For | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Moon (standard) | Reaction to the world; how you experience things; mind's impressions | Feelings, emotions, inner reactions |
| Lagna | Action in the world; how you apply intelligence; what guides your actions | External behavior, actions, achievements |
| Sun | Soul's experience (neither action nor reaction) | Adhana chakra (conception chart) only; not used for regular charts |
Which to Use — Lagna or Moon?
- Count planets in kendras from Moon
- Count planets in kendras from Lagna
- Whichever has more planets = stronger → use that as the primary Vimshottari seed
Personality Implication
- Lagna stronger than Moon: Person is more individualistic, doesn't care much about world's opinion; acts on their own convictions; strong personality; actions > reactions
- Moon stronger than Lagna: Person is more people-oriented, thinks about others' reactions, is emotionally involved with the world
Sun-Based Vimshottari
- Only applicable in Adhana chakra (chart cast at time of conception)
- Used to trace what happens to the soul during the 9 months of gestation
- Not used for natal chart reading (soul is opaque to us in ordinary life)
Additional Seeds
- Vimshottari can theoretically be found from various points (Trisputa, Mandi, etc.) per Prasna Marga; needs more research
- Classic basis exists for Moon, Sun, Lagna, Sema/Adhana/Utpana Tara from Moon, and longitude of Mandi
Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha
What It Is
- Tribhagi = 3-parted; covers the entire 360° of the zodiac (standard Vimshottari covers only 120°)
- 27 dashas (all 27 nakshatras) instead of 9
- Each dasha = 1/3 of normal duration (Mars = 7 years → 2y 4m; Venus = 20y → 6y 8m)
- The 9 dashas cycle 3 times, one for each 120° arc, each set covering different nakshatras
Primary Use — Sahama Activation
- Sahamas are mathematical points in the zodiac significant for specific life events
- Tribhagi Vimshottari tracks when the progressing dasha reaches each Sahama point
- When the dasha progression reaches the Sahama point in longitude → that event may occur
Example: Bandhana Sahama (Imprisonment)
- Bandhana Sahama = at ~19°13' Leo (Purva Phalguni nakshatra)
- Swami's Tribhagi: 2nd cycle Venus Dasha = July 2001 to March 2008 (6y 8m)
- Middle point of Purva Phalguni (~20° Leo) reached at ~3y 4m into Venus Dasha = November 2004
- Bandhana at 19°14' (slightly before midpoint) → October–November 2004 window
- Actual arrest: November 2004 → confirmed
Key Sahamas
- Bandhana Sahama = imprisonment
- Rajasahama = kingdom/power
- Vivaha Sahama = marriage
- Putra Sahama = children
Panchanga Elements
| Panchanga Limb | Element | Planet |
|---|---|---|
| Tithi (lunar day) | Water (Jala) | Venus, Ketu |
| Yoga (lunisolar) | Ether (Akasha) | — |
| Vara (weekday) | Fire (Agni) | — |
| Nakshatra (constellation) | Air (Vayu) | — |
| Karana (half lunar day) | Earth (Bhumi) | — |
- Tithi Pravesha chart = based on Tithi (Jalatattva) → uses Venus/Ketu style dasha (Shastri/Ashtottari for TP)
TP Chart Dasha — Shastri (Ashtottari) Dasha Styles
Three dasha antardasha counting styles:
- Jupiter style (Vimshottari): In dasha of planet X, antardasha starts with X itself, then 2, 3, 4...
- Venus/Ketu style (Shastri/Ashtottari, used with TP charts): In dasha of X, antardasha starts with the next planet (X+1, X+2...9, then X comes last)
- Rahu style (Shodashotri): Totally reversed; goes 9, 8, 7, 6... (decreasing order)
Annual TP Chart Rules
- Primary dasha: Tithi Ashtottari (Shastri/Astrotri 3 Dasha) — tailor-made for TP charts
- Hora Lord = ruler of the year; like the king; acts most powerfully in his own dasha (not just antardasha in another's main period)
- Natal Vimshottari Dasha takes precedence for broad timing; annual TP dasha shows when in the year something happens
- Events promised in natal chart can be timed by cross-referencing TP annual dasha
