Shoola Dasha (Shula Dasha) — Shiva's Trident

Introduced at the end of the class, with thumb rules only.

What it shows: serious health problems, serious accidents, even death — Shiva's shoola coming and striking.

Computation:

1. Take the stronger of the lagna and the 7th house.
2. Go zodiacally from there, one sign at a time.
3. Each sign gets 9 years.

"Shoola dasha is so easy to compute. You don't need any software. You can do it mentally. This is Shiva's progression — Shiva as Mahakala."

Ignore antardashas. Using them is more complicated. Just see the dasha.

Why Arudha Lagna: at death the soul still exists and the deeds still exist. What ends is the Maya — "so-and-so person, doing so-and-so things, of so-and-so house". The Arudha is what Shiva destroys. The trines of the Arudha are the dharma of that Maya.

Danger signals — the more of these, the stronger:

1. The dasha sign is the Arudha Lagna or its 5th or 9th.
2. The dasha sign is the 3rd from Arudha Lagna.
3. The sign is an evil one. Saturn's and Mars's signs are more likely to give bad results.
4. The sign is occupied or aspected by rasi drishti by the 6th lord, 8th lord, badhakesha, a planet in Gandanta, a planet in Marana Karaka Sthana, or by combinations in the chart that show disease or accident.
5. A maraka is in it or aspects it — worse still. Marakas are the 2nd and 7th lords and malefics in the 2nd and 7th.

When such a dasha runs, tell the person to be careful and advise prayers such as a Mrityunjaya homa.

In the father's chart (AL in Gemini):

• Aquarius is a trine from AL, and the most evil of the three trines, being Saturn's sign.
• Sun, the badhakesha who afflicts the lagna, aspects Aquarius by rasi drishti from Libra.
• Moon, Jupiter and Rahu aspect it by rasi drishti from Cancer — above all Jupiter, the 6th lord in deep Gandanta afflicted by Rahu.
• The marakas are Mars (2nd and 7th lord, in the 8th) and Ketu (co-lord of Scorpio). Neither aspects Aquarius. That is the saving grace.
• So in Aquarius dasha there is a chance of a problem in health.

Counting 9 years a sign from Libra, Aquarius runs from age 36 to 45, and the accident came three months after he turned 36. (That count is worked out here; the dates are not read out in class.)

Sthira Karakas and a Relative's Shoola Dasha — the Same Event from the Son's Chart

A student asks how the accident shows in the son's chart. (The son's birth data is not read out in class; the placements below are as PVNR describes them.)

First check that the child was born by then. An event in a parent's life before the child's birth will mostly not be seen from the child's chart.

Shoola Dasha started from the relative's house

• Father: take the 9th house as lagna. Start from the stronger of the 9th and the 7th from it. Nine years a sign, zodiacally. This is Pitru Shoola Dasha.
• Mother: the same from the 4th house.
• Brothers: from the 3rd house — stronger of the 3rd and the 9th, so it is the same dasha as the father's. A bad period there need not touch all brothers; it can be one of them.

Which dashas are dangerous: when the father dies it is the Maya of the 9th house that is destroyed. So in place of Arudha Lagna use A9: the trines from A9 and the 3rd from A9. For mother, A4.

Marakas are counted from the 9th house in the same way: the 2nd and 7th lords from it and malefics in the 2nd and 7th from it.

Sthira Karakas

Three kinds of karakas:

• Naisargika karakas — Brahma
• Chara karakas — Vishnu
• Sthira karakas — Shiva

Serious accidents, illnesses and death of relatives are seen from the sthira karakas.

"When Shiva's shoola comes there, something happens to that person — either death or a serious suffering."

The sthira karaka's sign is the most important. Its trines count too, because the shoola has three spokes: the main one points at the dasha sign and the other two at its trines.

In the son's chart

• The 9th house is Taurus. Taurus is stronger than Scorpio, so Pitru Shoola Dasha starts from Taurus. The accident came in Taurus dasha itself.
• A9 is in Capricorn. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the dangerous dashas for father.
• Taurus holds Sun, the karaka of father, with Ketu. They are far apart in degrees, which is a saving grace.
• Marakas from the 9th house: Mercury and Mars (2nd and 7th lords), Ketu (co-lord of the 7th, and stronger than Mars), and Saturn and Mars as malefics in the 2nd from it. PVNR picks Mars as the strongest maraka, then Ketu. Ketu is in the dasha sign.
• Sthira karaka of father: Sun wins over Venus hands down — "four planets, and it is daytime". So the main spoke of the shoola is on the Pitru karaka himself.

Conclusion: bad events to father are possible in that dasha.

When Shoola dasha shows a suffering, it is a serious one, not a scrape. But take it with a pinch of salt:

"This is not deterministic, but this will give you a decent idea of when something bad is likely to happen to one of your close relatives."

The same sign can be maraka for several relatives, but each relative's dasha reaches it at a different time.

Reading Events Relating to Relatives from Dvadasamsa (D-12)

The son uses Shatabdika dasha, the conditional nakshatra dasha that applies to his chart. It was running Mercury dasha, Moon antardasha.

D-12 does not only show what happens to the parents. It also shows how you feel about your parents and the impact of their lives on you at that time.

From the D-12 lagna — the son's own experience

• Moon is the 12th lord and exalted. Exaltation of a dusthana lord is not good.
• He is in the 12th from Arudha Lagna and is with A6 and A8.
• Result: some loss, struggle or sudden development relating to parents in those six months. It could be quarrels, walking away, father in hospital, father gone abroad. Which parent, and which of these, cannot be picked from this alone.

Four references for father

From the 9th house (9th lord Mars is in it)

• Mercury is lord of the 3rd and 6th from it — a functional malefic — and in its badhaka sthana.
• Moon is in the maraka sthana from it.
• Reading: an obstacle to the guidance he gets from father, and it may even stop for a while.

"You can't say father had an accident. You can only say the fathering that his father does to him has some obstacles and maybe there was a temporary break."

From L9 (Capricorn) — what happened to father himself

• Mercury is lord of the 6th and 9th from it: some protection to father, and an accident is possible. He is in the 2nd, a maraka sthana.
• Moon is the 7th lord, a maraka, and the dispositor of the 8th lord Sun, who is in the 7th.
• Bhoga: Mercury to Moon is 4 signs; 4 from Moon is Leo, the 8th from L9. Father experiences 8th-house results in this antardasha — sudden, unexpected events.

That is the granularity you get from the son's chart. A death-like condition or an unexpected bad event to father. Not that it was a vehicular accident. Death is possible in theory since both planets are marakas, but there is some protection.

Career Reading — Supplementary Points

A closing exercise on the father's chart. He did odd jobs at first and joined a bank in 1969, around the age of 25. Read the D-10 (Taurus lagna).

• Mercury, the 2nd lord, is in the 8th in Sagittarius with the 8th lord Jupiter, and aspects his own house, the 2nd. Money from Mercurian things, linked to Sagittarius.
• Mars, the 7th lord, is in the 6th. He does not show the career much.
• The 10th house, Aquarius, is ruled by Saturn and Rahu. Saturn is the labourer of the planetary cabinet. Saturn and Rahu show routine jobs — though Saturn can show other things too, a yogi for example.
• Saturn, the 10th lord, is in the 6th from the 10th house. A Saturnine career with struggle and obstacles: routine jobs.

The rule: the house the lord occupies, counted from his own house, colours the result. The 6th lord in the 8th from the 5th gives occult scholarship. The 10th lord in the 6th from the 10th gives a career of struggle.

Banking: Mercury is the karaka for banking. A student suggests Venus for finance.

"When you are talking about banks, financial institutions, insurance, it's more Jupiter and Mercury than Venus."

Mercury and Jupiter in Sagittarius can show a bank or insurance job. When Mercury took control, the switch from the Saturnine jobs came.
