BPHS Chapter 24 — 12th Lord in Houses 7–12

The class finishes the 12th lord (Santhanam edition, chapter 24, from verse 139). The method is the same throughout: take the house the verse speaks about as lagna and see what the 12th lord becomes from there. Four general verses that close the chapter are left for the next class.

12th Lord in 7th House

BPHS results:

• Always expenses on account of the spouse (vyayo dārakṛtaḥ sadā)
• No happiness from the wife (bhāryā sukhaṁ naiva)
• No strength, no learning (bala-vidyā-vivarjitaḥ)

Why expenses on the spouse: Wherever the 12th lord sits, he gives expenses on that house's matters. His agenda is expense and loss. In the 7th, what he has access to is the wife and what relates to her. If he puts in an application saying "this is for the wife", it is sanctioned.

Why no happiness from the wife:

• Marital happiness is seen with the 7th house as lagna.
• From the 7th, this planet is the 6th lord in lagna. The 6th is the house of quarrels; a duṣṭhāna lord sits in the reference that shows marital happiness.
• Not a pleasant combination for marital happiness.

Why weak:

• Parashara does not say what kind of strength. When he does not say, take it as physical strength.
• Strength and physical vitality come from lagna and the 3rd house.
• A planet in the 7th aspects lagna (graha dṛṣṭi). Here it is the lord of the house of loss and compromise. His aspect on lagna shows some weakness, some physical problem.

Why no learning:

• Lagna is the basic intelligence. The 12th lord aspecting it lowers it.
• From the 5th (scholarship) this planet is the 8th lord. He sits in the 3rd from the 5th, an upachaya, which by itself is not bad. But the planet put in charge of accumulating scholarship is the one who wants to break it.
• On the positive side he can give scholarship in 8th-house matters: the person can accumulate occult knowledge.
• A student raised Viparīta Rāja Yoga. The teacher: it does not apply here. It is not a desirable thing for every matter. Money can come in one day; scholarship cannot.

"Money, suddenly one day you can get money, but scholarship, you have to work hard. Certain things will come only if you work hard."

• Someone may be blessed overnight into a great scholar like Kālidāsa, but such cases are rare.

12th Lord in 8th House

BPHS results (verse 140):

• Always endowed with gains (lābhānvitaḥ sadā)
• Pleasant in speech (priyavāk)
• Medium span of life (madhyamāyuḥ)
• Endowed with all good qualities (sampūrṇa-guṇa-saṁyutaḥ)

Why always gains:

• The lord of the house of losses is in the house of struggle. Two negatives make a positive, like −1 × −1 = 1.
• The planet whose agenda is to give losses is told to struggle. He struggles to give losses, so there are few losses, and there may be profits instead.

Why soft-spoken:

• Speech is the 2nd house. A planet in the 8th aspects the 2nd (graha dṛṣṭi).
• The 12th is the house of humility, of being low. The 3rd and 6th are the houses of aggression and asserting yourself.
• The lord of humility aspects the house of speech, so the speech is soft and humble.
• Verse 134 gives the same result (priyavādī) for the 12th lord in the 2nd itself. The 2nd and the 8th give it for the same reason. The reasoning can be extended to rāśi dṛṣṭi and argala.

Why medium life:

• A student's reading: from the 8th (longevity) this planet is the 5th lord in lagna, so the 8th house is not weakened.
• The teacher's thumb rule: planets in the 8th decide the length of life.
  • Functional benefic there (a trine or quadrant lord) → long life
  • Neutral planet there → medium life
  • Functional malefic there → short life
• Houses 2, 8 and 12 are neutral; 3, 6 and 11 are malefic. So the 2nd, 8th and 12th lords are neutral. (The 8th lord in the 8th is a good yoga in its own right.)
• The 12th lord is not good for lagna, but he is not that malefic either. In the 8th he is not bad for longevity. Hence medium.

"This is a thumb rule, this is absolutely unreliable. You cannot make a prediction based on this."

• The strength of the 8th lord and many other things have to be weighed.

Why all good qualities:

• Virtue is seen from the 9th. The 12th is the 4th from the 9th: the direction of dharma, the clarity about what your duty is. With a weak 12th a person may want to do good and still not know what is right for him to do.
• Take the 12th as lagna. The planet is then lagna lord in the 9th: bhāgya, puṇya from the past guiding him. The guidance here is in the clarity and direction of dharma. He knows clearly what is right and wrong, what to do and what to avoid.
• A student's addition, accepted: the 12th is also the house of selflessness and of mokṣa. With its lord in the 9th from it, the dharma of that house is blessed. He is selfless.

"He is a very selfless person. He is a guileless person. He knows what he has to do. He will do that."

12th Lord in 9th House

BPHS results:

• Hates his guru (guru-dveṣī)
• Enmity even with friends (mitrair api bhaved vairam)
• Intent on achieving his own purpose (svārtha-sādhana-tatparaḥ)

Other readings can be given too — going abroad, for one. These three are what the verse lists.

Why hatred of the guru:

• From the 9th as lagna the planet is the 4th lord in lagna. That is good for the guru himself (conveyances and so on). It says nothing about the native's attitude.
• The native's attitude is judged by what the planet stands for from lagna. The 12th shows losses and unhappiness; on the positive side it shows humility.
• Positive reading (raised by a student, accepted): the planet's agenda is to make you humble and make you give things away, and he is told to look after guru and dharma. The person can be a humble servant of his guru.
• Negative reading, the one Parashara stresses: the 12th is also the house of compromise and of missing something. It is not a house of satisfaction. Its lord can leave a lingering dissatisfaction. In the 9th, that dissatisfaction is with the guru: he feels he is missing something from him, and that can make him dislike his guru.
• The same can apply to the father, to religion and to the other 9th-house matters.

Why enmity with friends:

• Students tried the 7th and the 11th as lagna first. From the 11th the planet is a māraka (2nd lord) in the 11th — it can obstruct the friends' gains, but it does not explain a quarrel.
• The word is vairam, enmity. So take the 6th as lagna.
• From the 6th this planet is the 7th lord in the 4th. A very good placement. The 7th is interactions, the 4th is direction: many interactions with a clear direction, all serving the 6th.
• The planet is well placed for the house of enmity, so he can give many enmities. Being the 7th lord from there, they can be with friends and associates.
• This is the basic factor behind guru-dveṣī as well.

Why "svārtha-sādhana-tatparaḥ":

• The plain translation is "selfish". The teacher does not read it that way, because selfishness does not fit the combination.
• Sva = self, artha = purpose, sādhana = achieving, tatpara = keen on. Someone keen on achieving what he set out to do — for himself, for his guru, or for his wife.
• From the 3rd house (initiative, the basic urge to act) the planet is the 10th lord in the 7th: karma joined to interactions, an artha trikoṇa linked to a kāma trikoṇa. For his work he will go and talk to everybody.
• The 3rd house becomes very powerful. He takes the initiative and does not give up. Once he takes a saṅkalpa, the ball rolls.

"He is saying somebody who will move heaven and earth to accomplish what he wants to accomplish."

12th Lord in 10th House

BPHS results:

• Expenses on account of the royal family (vyayo rājakulād bhavet)
• Very little happiness from the father (pitṛto'pi sukhaṁ tasya svalpam eva hi jāyate)

Why expenses on account of royalty:

• It does not mean he donates money to the king. The 12th lord's agenda is expense; in the 10th he gives it through career and work.
• A man working in a king's court has to dress well and wear good perfume. An accountant at a small merchant's house does not.
• Today: the suit and shoes a bank expects; an office you cannot drive up to in an ordinary car.
• A student asked: more than he earns? No. Parashara does not say that. He spends a higher share of his earnings on maintaining himself in his work than other people do.

Why little happiness from the father:

• Happiness from the father is seen from the 9th.
• A planet in the 10th is in the 2nd from the 9th and has argala on it.
• He is the 12th lord: loss, dissatisfaction, not being fulfilled. A planet of dissatisfaction having argala on the 9th shows not being happy with the father.

12th Lord in 11th House

BPHS results:

• Loss in gains (lābhe hāniḥ prajāyate)
• Sometimes obtains wealth kept safe by others (pareṇa rakṣitaṁ dravyaṁ kadācil labhate naraḥ)

Why problems in gains:

• The planet whose agenda is losses is told to give profits. Profits will not be smooth; he drains them.
• He is also the māraka of the 11th (its 12th lord), sitting in it. A māraka in lagna is not good for that lagna.

Why he gets money saved by others:

• Money that comes without his own effort — the fruit of somebody else's saving.
• Students tried the 7th for "other people" and the 8th as their wealth. The teacher: right line, one step more. Parashara does not say what kind of other person. Take the 11th, the people you know well, your friends.
• From the 11th this planet is the 2nd lord: the accumulated wealth of friends. He sits in the native's house of gains. So the native sometimes gains from what a friend has accumulated.
• It is not stealing. A friend with a big bank balance may write him a small cheque, and he uses it.
• A student's extension, praised: the 11th is also the elder brother. He can benefit from the elder brother's money.

12th Lord in 12th House

BPHS results:

• Excess of expenses (vyayādhikyaṁ hi jāyate)
• No bodily happiness (na śarīra-sukhaṁ tasya)
• Angry, and given to hating people (krodhī, dveṣaparo bhavet)

Why many expenses: The lord of expenses in his own house.

Why no bodily happiness: The 12th is the house of mokṣa, but for lagna, for the body, it is loss and compromise. With the 12th this strong the body has to make compromises. The physique is not strong.

Why angry and hostile:

• The 6th is the centre of these emotions — how much you hate others.
• From the 6th this planet is the 7th lord in the 7th. A very good placement for the 6th. The 6th shows enmity; its 7th shows the interactions that go with it.
• The planet also aspects the 6th house (graha dṛṣṭi).

"He is not only angry with people, he makes it a point to tell people, I hate you, you are a bad person, you are not doing it right."

The other possibility — Vimala Yoga:

• The 12th lord in the 12th is Vimala Yoga, as the 6th lord in the 6th is Harsha Yoga. (The recording garbles both names.) The 12th is also the house of humility.
• If the planet is strong and has nothing to do with the 6th house, he works more as the 12th lord.
• Example: Pisces lagna, Saturn in the 12th. The 6th is the Sun's house. Saturn aspects it but has no stake in it and does not want to give its results. And he is Saturn. The person will be humble and good to people.
• Vimala Yoga may dominate over the results above. What Parashara said also remains a possibility.
