D10 Career Analysis — Mars vs Ketu in Army, Saturn-Mars Raj Yoga & Foreign Travel

Teaching Method — Practical Class

The teacher opens: "Today will be a practical class." He plays the client; the students give the advice. "I want to see how much you have learnt."

Advice to students:

• The main problem of learners is fear of being wrong. "As long as you are afraid of being wrong, you will never reach perfection."

• "Unless you make 200 bad predictions, you will not be a good astrologer. All good astrologers must have made at least 200 bad predictions earlier."

• Start early and make those 200 bad predictions early.
• Each person has affinity to certain techniques, from past-life connections. You find your niche only by practice. He himself has one technique he is most comfortable with and goes straight to it when asked for a prediction; another astrologer may be happier with something else. "You have to play with everything."
• Even if busy, see charts every week. "Every week I will see one chart, or every week I will see 5 charts. Like that, keep a target."
• If nobody comes to you, go to a Yahoo group where people post questions and send a reply.

Nakshatra Sutras

Before the chart, the class recited the next two nakshatra mantras (they had finished up to Pushyami):

• Ashlesha — mantra of the Sarpa devatas, the snake gods who rule the nakshatra
• Magha — ruled by the Pitris, the ancestors

The class notes date this discussion to January 22, 2006.

The native's question: For the last one year he has not been happy at work, and his boss has not been happy with him. A week ago the company told him to show improvement or be let go in about a month. Even if they keep him, he does not want to stay. He wants another job and asks whether the time is good for finding one.

Common-sense advice first: "If you want to look for a job, do not start after a month, but start now."

Career history (given by the native in class):

• Training began June 1976; joined the Indian Army in 1977
• In the army he did telecommunication work — managing telecom infrastructure, both the hardware and the manpower
• Premature retirement in 1998
• Came to the USA in April 1999
• Database administrator at one company since July 1999

Two jobs in about 27 years. The teacher, who changed about seven jobs in six and a half years, calls that very few changes.

D10 Dasamsha Chart

• Lagna: Aquarius
• 10th house: Scorpio, holding Mars (own sign) and Jupiter
• Mars in own sign in the 10th gives Ruchaka Mahapurusha Yoga
• 10th lords: Mars in the 10th; Ketu in the 9th (Libra)
• Lagna lord Saturn: in Taurus, the 4th house. Arudha Lagna (AL) is also in Taurus
• Rahu (co-lord of Aquarius): in Aries, the 3rd house
• Mercury: in Cancer, the 6th house
• Venus (4th and 9th lord) with Sun in Capricorn, the 12th house
• Parivartana: 4th lord Venus in the 12th, 12th lord Saturn in the 4th

Rectifying the Dasamsha Lagna

A student asked whether the chart had been rectified. It had been, but nobody would take responsibility for it, so the class checked it again.

First see how close the lagna is to a border

• Rashi lagna changes if the time is 5 min 25 sec earlier or 4 min 57 sec later
• The software gives this window separately for each divisional chart, and the windows differ
• Example given: in D20 the lagna changes just 13 seconds earlier, but 4 min 57 sec later. So the D20 lagna is Capricorn or, quite possibly, Sagittarius; Aquarius is a distant contender. An error of 13 seconds is possible even when someone believes the time is accurate
• In D10 the window is about 5.5 minutes on one side and 5 minutes on the other. If the time cannot be wrong by more than a couple of minutes, the D10 lagna is Aquarius
• When the window is equal on both sides, you have no bias: if the chart fails, test the previous and the next Dasamsha both

Dasamsha on a sign border

• The last Dasamsha of Aries (last 3°) is Capricorn. The first Dasamsha of Taurus (first 3°) is also Capricorn
• So on an odd-sign → even-sign border the D10 lagna stays the same while the Rashi lagna changes. To correlate Rashi and D10, rectify the Rashi lagna first
• This chart is on an even → odd border (Capricorn → Aquarius). There both the Rashi lagna and the D10 lagna change together

Static facts before dashas

• To rectify the D10 lagna, do not start with "when did you get your first job". Ask first what the career is

• "The fewer the parameters, the better off you are."

• Each dasha you bring in adds a parameter. If the wrong dasha is used it clouds the judgment. Conclusions from static features of the chart are safer
• Ask what he did for most of his career, not only what he does now

The check

• When the native said only "database administrator", the chart did not fit well. The database planet Mercury is in the 6th house, but the 10th house is much stronger than the 6th, and it is Mars who shows the career. Mars points to the hardware side, not to databases
• Once the army career came out, the chart fit: 10th lord Ketu, and a very strong Mars in the 10th
• With this lagna the career is "100% justifiable". With a neighbouring lagna it might still be 50% justifiable. So the class went on to confirm with events (Part 9)

Mars vs Ketu — Army Career Distinction

A student said that army soldiers are shown by Ketu rather than Mars. The teacher refined it: both Mars and Ketu show military people.

• Most soldiers are shown by Ketu. Still, any soldier's chart, like a policeman's, shows a strong Mars influence, because Mars is the planet of aggression and of initiating
• Even a high-ranking officer still has to say yes to someone above. So a Ketu quality remains

• "They never become full Mars. They start as full Ketu. Slowly they become some percent Ketu and some percent Mars."

In this chart: D10 lagna Aquarius. The 10th house Scorpio is ruled by Ketu and holds Mars. Army career fits.

Telecom Hardware, and Mars vs Sun Leadership

Which planet shows telecom work in the army?

• Mercury is the planet of communication — the intelligence through which communication happens. That is why Mercury shows telecom
• But maintaining telecom hardware or telecom infrastructure does not need Mercury in the 10th. "Any kind of equipment, hardware, maintaining them, that's basically Mars and Ketu."
• Rahu shows big industrial machinery, big airplanes — not telecom equipment. "Big" and "small" here are not about physical size but about what the machine does
• Here the 10th house is ruled by Ketu, holds Mars (hardware, engineering), and Mercury aspects it by rāśi dṛṣṭi (Cancer aspects Scorpio). All three planets are involved

Managing equipment vs managing people

• Students suggested Sun and Venus for "management". The teacher: managing people and managing equipment are very different
• Keeping equipment in shape and usable is a Mars matter
• Ketu works with the equipment. Mars takes the initiative to see that all the hardware is in order. Sun rules over people

Mars vs Sun

Both are Kshatriya planets, warrior planets, fiery planets.

• Sun in the 10th: a leader who is a good administrator
• Mars strong in the 10th: also leadership, but hands-on. "Let us all go and dig a hole there."

Rashi Drishti Review (for new students)

Given because Mercury's aspect on the 10th house is a sign aspect.

• Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): each aspects the other three dual signs
• Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): take the adjacent fixed sign and take quadrants from it
  • Aries: quadrants from Taurus → Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
• Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): take the adjacent movable sign and take quadrants from it
  • Taurus: quadrants from Aries → Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

In the North Indian chart these are hard to find. In the South Indian chart they are obvious. With a little practice you see them at once.

Saturn-Mars Mutual Aspect — Dual Analysis

A student pointed to Saturn and Mars opposite each other in D10 (Saturn in Taurus, Mars in Scorpio — mutual 7th graha dṛṣṭi) and expected many job changes. The native has had only two jobs.

The clash

• Saturn: hard work, patience, stability. He hates to move. Watch him for a month and he seems not to move at all; that is why he is called Manda, the slow-moving one. For him things as they are are always fine
• Mars: wants a change every day — "every minute he wants a change"
• Mars is the planet of dynamism, Saturn the planet of stability and continuity. When they are together or aspect each other there is a tug of war inside the person
• Compare Sun and Saturn together or in mutual aspect: the clash is king versus slave. One part of you wants to decide everything for everybody and do nothing. Another part says, "work hard, go and do it yourself." Those two parts clash

But also a Raja Yoga

• Saturn is lagna lord. Mars is 10th lord
• Their mutual aspect is a yoga between a trine lord and a quadrant lord — a Raja Yoga
• By nature two extremes, but here they work together to give him good fortune in career

Fixed signs — stability wins

• Aries and its quadrants are movable signs; Taurus and its quadrants are fixed; Gemini and its quadrants are dual
• Movable signs show change and dynamism. Fixed signs show stability and continuity. Dual signs are a mixture
• Saturn as lagna lord already gives a steady, patient, Saturnine nature in career. In a fixed sign he is even stronger in that
• Mars, the planet of dynamism, is also "stuck" in a fixed sign. Had Mars been in Aries, there would be a lot of dynamism
• Stability wins: Mars too is in a fixed sign, and Saturn as lagna lord decides his nature

"He is somebody who likes things the way they are. So the fact that he is talking about changing job and not being happy shows that there is something seriously wrong."

Planets in lagna or AL of D10

From the published class notes; this part is not on the recording.

• Saturn in AL in D10: a very stable person who does not change jobs often. More so when AL is a fixed sign. Here lagna lord Saturn is in AL in Taurus
• Mars in a movable sign in lagna or AL: usually a very dynamic person
• Sun in lagna or AL: a very kingly person
• Sun and Saturn both there: the clash of king and slave within the person

Saturn or Rahu — Which Lord of Aquarius Is Stronger?

A student asked about Rahu, the co-lord of Aquarius. Both lords give some results; the stronger gives more.

Shortcut: AL is in Taurus, which means the software took Saturn as lord of the lagna. The Narayana Dasha of D10 shows the same.

The rules, checked by hand:

1. More planets conjoined — Saturn and Rahu are each alone. Equal
2. Aspects from Mercury, Jupiter and the dispositor — count them
   • Mercury (Cancer, movable) aspects Taurus by rāśi dṛṣṭi, not Aries. Saturn 1, Rahu 0
   • Jupiter (Scorpio) aspects Saturn in Taurus by 7th graha dṛṣṭi. The teacher counts Saturn 2, Rahu 0
   • Dispositor: Rahu's dispositor Mars (Scorpio, fixed) aspects Aries (movable). Rahu 1. Saturn's dispositor Venus (Capricorn, movable) aspects Taurus (fixed). Saturn 3

• Saturn 3 out of 3, Rahu 1 out of 3. Saturn wins

What it means: Saturn's indications dominate. Had Rahu been stronger, AL would fall elsewhere and his nature in career would be considerably different — Rahu is in dynamic Aries, aspected by the lord of Aries.

Check the software by hand now and then:

• You may find a bug, or find something you had misunderstood that never mattered because the software did it for you
• "Give up your computer, take some panchangas, take a notebook and do astrology with them for a month. Then you will know all the rules."

Vimshottari Events — Jupiter Dasha and Saturn-Venus Antardasha

The student whose turn it was chose Vimshottari.

Joining the army — Jupiter dasha

• Training began in June 1976 in Jupiter-Jupiter; he joined in 1977 in Jupiter-Saturn
• Jupiter sits in Scorpio in D10 and gives the results of Ketu
• Ketu is the 10th lord in the 9th house. What career does he show? "Several possibilities, but definitely a foot soldier, an army man, somebody who takes orders."

Leaving the army — Saturn-Venus (1998)

After a good 21-year career he took premature retirement in Saturn dasha, Venus antardasha.

1. The Parivartana. 4th lord Venus is in the 12th and 12th lord Saturn is in the 4th. The 4th house is happiness, comfort and the sense of having a good direction. Its lord in the 12th: that comfort and direction is given up.

• An exchange of the 4th lord with the 12th lord is counted a bad Parivartana: loss of comforts and of direction, or a compromise in getting direction
• In D10, Saturn-Venus can show a resignation

2. Saturn-Venus is an antardasha of change.

"Saturn-Venus antardasha has the reputation of making somebody a sannyasi. Saturn-Venus makes people question their life, makes big changes in their life."

• This holds for Venus dasha Saturn antardasha too, but more for Saturn-Venus
• Sannyasa itself needs suitable combinations for renunciation in the chart

3. Bhoga. Saturn is in Taurus. From Saturn, Venus is in the 9th. Take the 9th again from Venus: Virgo, the 8th house from lagna. The bhoga of Saturn-Venus is in the 8th house.

4. Arudhas. A8 and AL are both in Taurus. Saturn sits there and Venus rules it. Both planets are tied to both arudhas.

• 8th house is Mrityu. A8, the Mrityu Pada, is a tangible break in career. A planet in A8 can give a clear break. The class notes read A8 here as the resignation paper
• A planet associated with AL or lagna can give a new beginning in career
• Together: a break and a new beginning. What he gives up is given up for the new beginning

UL, A10 and A4 together — a lifelong reading

The bhoga sign Virgo holds UL, A10 and A4.

• A10: the tangible karma, the tangible work — the actual job
• UL: all the compromises you make, what you give away to somebody else — compromise or tangible loss. (The arudha of the 12th is called UL, Upapada Lagna, just as the arudha of the 1st is called AL.)
• A4: tangible comfort, the tangible sense of security
• UL with A10: his career will involve compromise
• A4 with A10: he will be comfortable and happy in it
• From lagna they are in the 8th. From AL they are in the 5th — well placed
• Conclusion: a good career overall, comfortable and happy, with some compromises. "Compromise is not a bad thing."
• This is a general reading for life. Because the bhoga of Saturn-Venus fell there, it was felt most in that antardasha (May 1997 – July 2000)

The native confirmed: he gave up his seniority and a coming promotion in the army in order to leave, and he was happy to do it.

UL in different charts: in Rashi and Navamsha, UL is the spouse — "by far the biggest compromise that you make in your life". In Dasamsha it shows the compromises made in career.

Foreign Travel Indicators

He did not only leave a job. He changed country. Can Saturn-Venus take him abroad?

Best charts for residence and foreign travel: D4 (Chaturthamsa) and the Rashi chart itself. The class used Rashi.

Houses:

• 4th — residence only
• 3rd — a travel; 7th — a long travel
• 12th — being displaced from the motherland
• 9th — prospering in a foreign country
• In the classics the main houses for foreign travel are the 9th and 12th
• Badhakasthana and Badhakesha — also show being displaced from the motherland

Badhakasthana — the troublemaking house

• Movable lagna (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) → 11th house
• Fixed lagna (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) → 9th house
• Dual lagna (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) → 7th house
• Remember it as 11, 9, 7

In this chart (Rashi, Aquarius lagna)

• For a fixed lagna the 9th house and the Badhakasthana are the same: Libra
• Venus is 9th lord and Badhakesha
• Saturn (lagna lord and 12th lord) is exalted in the 9th house
• So the 9th house and Badhakasthana are linked with both Saturn and Venus. Saturn dasha, Venus antardasha can give the journey
• A student added a sahama — sahamas can be used in the natal chart too. Jalapatana Sahama (crossing the ocean to a foreign land) is at 23°45' Libra. Saturn is at 22°48' Libra, one degree away

A side question — cyclic Parivartana

A student asked about an exchange among three or more planets (A in B's house, B in C's, C in A's). The teacher: when two planets exchange, tradition says each gives the other's results. For a cyclic exchange tradition gives no guideline. Some harmonising of the energies must be there, but how to use it he does not know — "the bottom line is speculation."
