D60 Shashtiamsha — Four Levels of Karma, Past Life & Moola Dasha
Gemstones and karma: a gem only works if it is appropriate for your karmic blueprint. Four levels of karma: Dridha (fixed, cannot be changed), Dridha-Adridha (semi-fixed, can be modified), Adridha (flexible, can be changed), Ati-Adridha (very flexible, changes easily). D60 (Shashtiamsha) philosophy: cuts through all environmental overlays (family, society, time period) to show the raw individual karmic blueprint. D60 = past-life karmic residue manifesting in this life. AL of D60 for past life: how you appeared in your most recent past life. 3H from AL in D60 for past-life death cause.
"D-60 cuts through all environmental overlays and shows the raw individual karmic blueprint. A king and a beggar born in the same family at the same time can have very different D-60s."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Gemstones and Karma — Why Gems Are Rajasic
This is a recap/extension from previous lessons on remedies.
The core principle: Gems do not burn karma — they postpone it.
- When you wear a gem to strengthen a planet, you are borrowing energy from that planet
- The karma that planet had to give you still has to be given — it is merely deferred
- Gems are rajasic remedies: they invoke the planet's power through material means
- Prayer (japa, mantra, worship) is sattvic: it burns karma permanently by transforming your inner state
- A rajasic remedy allows you to function better in the short term but does not address the root karmic debt
PVNR's analogy: If you have a debt and take another loan to pay it, you still have the debt. Gems are like taking a loan — the karma comes due with interest later.
Implication: For serious karmic issues (8L, AK in difficult positions), prayer and spiritual practice are the real remedy. Gems can be used for functional support (strengthen LL, 9L, yogakaraka) but should not be used as a substitute for inner transformation.
Four Levels of Karma
PVNR explains that karma operates at four distinct levels, like concentric circles from individual to universal:
| Level | Description | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Individual karma | What you personally did across your previous lives | Most important for reading a chart |
| Family karma | Karma of your lineage/family system | Affects whole family collectively |
| Society karma | Karma of your community, state, or nation | Shown in mundane charts |
| Universal karma | Karma of all of humanity/creation | Cosmic level — Mahayugas, etc. |
Why this matters for D-60: The Shastiamsa (D-60) shows individual karma specifically — what you (as an individual soul) carried from previous lives. This is distinct from family karma (seen through 4th/5th house traditions) or societal karma.
The reason D-60 is so powerful is that it cuts through all environmental overlays (family, society, time period) and shows the raw individual karmic blueprint. A king and a beggar born in the same family at the same time might have very different D-60s — because their individual karmas differ.
What D-60 Shows — The Fundamental Philosophy
This is the most important conceptual framework in the lesson. PVNR gives a layered model of what each chart type shows:
| Chart | What it Shows |
|---|---|
| Rasi (D-1) | The physical body — the vehicle for this incarnation |
| Divisional charts (D-9, D-10, D-20, etc.) | The environments the soul operates in — dharmic, professional, spiritual |
| D-60 (Shastiamsa) | The actual karma being discharged through ALL those environments |
The key insight: All the environments (D-9 marriage life, D-10 career, D-20 spiritual growth) are just theaters. The actual play being performed in all of them is shown by D-60. The Rasi chart is the stage, the divisionals are different sets/scenes, but D-60 is the script that governs what actually unfolds.
— PVNR"D-60 shows the karma carried from ALL previous lives — not just this life. It decides what the planets will ultimately give, regardless of what the Rasi or divisional charts promise."
Vimsopaka Bala confirmation: In the Dasavarga group (10-divisional strength system), D-60 receives more weightage than the Rasi AND Navamsa combined. This is not a small distinction — it means a planet in a great position in D-1 and D-9 but debilitated or in a bad amsha in D-60 will ultimately give inferior results. The D-60 is the final arbiter.
Arudha Lagna of D-60 = Past Life
Rule: In the D-60, compute the Arudha Lagna (AL) exactly as you would for the Rasi chart. This AL represents the immediate previous incarnation of the native.
Why AL and not Lagna itself?
In the Rasi chart, you can distinguish between:
- Lagna (true self, satya)
- Lagna lord (intelligence)
- AL (perceived self, maya)
- Graha Arudhas (maya of each planet)
But in the D-60, this level of distinction is not practical — the chart is too compressed and the "subject" is the entire past life, not the current moment. So:
— PVNR"Everything collapses into one thing in D-60. The Arudha Lagna of the D-60 is everything for the past life — you cannot really distinguish between the true self and the perceived self at that level."
How to use the AL of D-60: Take it as the "lagna" of the past life and read the chart from it as if you are reading a Rasi chart. You can see:
- What the person did professionally (10H from AL)
- Their spiritual status (9H from AL, 12H from AL)
- Their character and nature (AL itself, LL quality)
- Their communication style (3H from AL)
- Their scholarship (5H from AL)
3rd House from AL in D-60 — Nature of Past-Life Death
The bhavat-bhavam principle: The 8th house shows death. What is 8th from 8th? The 3rd house. So the 3rd house (bhavat bhavam of the 8th) shows how death manifests tangibly — its circumstances and nature.
Since we are working from AL (which is the maya/tangible expression), the 3rd house from AL shows how the past-life death actually happened — the physical, observable circumstances.
Reading rules:
- Look at planets in the 3H from AL in D-60
- Look at planets having Rasi Drishti on that house
- If no planet, look at the sign itself (and the sign lord)
Sign = Place/Location of Past-Life Death
| Sign | Place/Circumstances |
|---|---|
| Aries | Battlefields, open grounds, active places |
| Taurus | Forests, cattle areas, stable places |
| Gemini | Gardens, educational institutions, libraries |
| Cancer | Near water, homes, domestic environments |
| Leo | Forests, places of authority, royal courts |
| Virgo | Agricultural fields, places of work/service |
| Libra | Marketplaces, entertainment venues, courts of law |
| Scorpio | Caves, hidden/secret places, underground |
| Sagittarius | Heights, temples, places of worship, open highways |
| Capricorn | Marshlands, swamps, inhospitable terrain |
| Aquarius | Mountains, remote/elevated places |
| Pisces | Riversides, oceans, hospitals, prisons |
Planet = Nature/Type of Past-Life Death
| Planet | Type of Death |
|---|---|
| Sun | By royal order/authority; or by fire; or by weapons (like a rifle/cannon — "death ray") |
| Moon | By drowning; by drowning in water (very connected to water-death) |
| Mars | Violent death: by weapons, blood, sudden assault, fire (more like firearms/swords) |
| Mercury | Multiple/complex causes; something uncertain or involving communication failure |
| Jupiter | Death with dignity; perhaps in old age; spiritual death (rare harm) |
| Venus | Comfort-related; possibly excess; or related to relationships/pleasure |
| Saturn | Prolonged illness; slow wasting disease; coma; a slow, lingering death |
| Rahu | Unusual/mysterious circumstances; poison; things not easily explained |
| Ketu | Accidental death by mistake — Ketu does not intend to kill but causes death through error, clumsiness, unexpected slip |
PVNR's note on Ketu: "Ketu doesn't want to kill people. He says — become detached through sadhana, get moksha. He never intentionally kills. So if Ketu is in the 3rd from AL, the person died by some mistake, some unexpected accident. Somebody took a wrong turn, or the staircase was loose, or he just slipped. Death by error."
Example from transcript: Ketu in Sagittarius in 3H from AL → death by falling from a height due to an error/mistake. Person has phobia of heights in current life.
Example from Pt. Sanjay Rath's chart: Exalted Moon in Gemini in 3H from AL in D-60 → past-life death by drowning (Moon = drowning, Gemini = water/educational environment). He had severe hydrophobia in this life.
Past-Life Phobias — The One Verifiable Thing
PVNR makes an important epistemological point here:
— PVNR"You can tell somebody they were a great poet in the past life, and they will feel good. You can tell them they were a great engineer. There is no proof for any of it. But there IS one verifiable thing: the phobia."
The mechanism: When a soul undergoes a painful, traumatic death, that pain leaves a deep impression — a vasana (tendency/groove) — in the causal body. In the next incarnation, this vasana manifests as an inexplicable fear connected to that mode of death.
"Once bitten, twice shy" — the soul's memory is embedded in the subconscious even though the conscious mind cannot access it.
Examples:
- Past-life drowning → hydrophobia (fear of water)
- Past-life falling from height due to Ketu's mistake → acrophobia + fear of making errors (inexplicable extreme caution near stairs/ledges)
The astrological method: Determine the 3H from AL in D-60, note the sign and planets, deduce the likely mode of death, then verify: "Do you have a phobia related to [water/heights/fire/etc.]?" If yes, you have a strong verification signal for the rectified D-60.
Also verifiable: Vasanas (instincts, affinities). If someone has Jupiter in 10H from D-60 AL as 2L+5L, they may have been an astrologer in the past life — so there will be a natural pull toward astrology in this life. Less definitive than phobias but observable.
