Griha Pravesha Muhurta — Principles and a Muhurta Chosen in Class

A student couple ask for a muhurta to enter their new house in New Hampshire. The builder's promised date is 22 December 2010. They also ask whether they can do a ceremony earlier, before the house is ready.

What Counts as Griha Pravesha

• A ceremony in an unfinished house does not start your residence there.

"You can't really cheat whoever is maintaining the order in the universe."

• Griha Pravesha is going into the house with the intention of staying, and staying. If you live there a few days and then travel for work, that is fine.
• Going to an unfinished house four days in a row and coming back is not moving in. Once it is finished you may even decide not to live there.
• If the house is nearly ready on the muhurta day and you do start living there, that is different from going only for the ritual.

At the muhurta moment — three definitions in use:

1. Cooking: tradition says boil milk and make pāyasam at the muhurta time. Cooking is worship of the God within you by feeding him.
2. Entering: griha pravesha literally means entering the house. You may have walked in before, but not as owner and not with the intention of living there.
3. Worshipping God: the purpose of a house is to establish God there and worship.

"In your mind you are thinking, okay, this is my house now. I am entering the house and I am going to live in this house. So with that thought, if you enter the house, that is the real griha pravesha. Boiling the milk, all these things are secondary."

• "All actions are actually in the mind."

What to Strengthen in the Muhurta Chart

The focus depends on what the person wants while living there. "Everything good" is not possible; keep everything reasonable and pick one focus.

Always: lagna strong and 4th house strong.

• Lagna is the foundation and general well-being. "If lagna is weak, everything else falls flat."
• The 4th is the house of house. You want to be comfortable there.

The teacher's example of a 9th-house muhurta: close relatives moved from New Jersey to the Boston area. They did almost no pūjā before. He gave them a muhurta with a very strong 9th house. Within a year the husband began a daily homam — Gaṇapati homam first, then Chaṇḍī homam, daily for more than three years by the time of this class — and the wife a daily Śiva homam.

How Long They Will Stay

Look at four factors: lagna, Moon, lagna lord, and the Moon-sign lord.

• Mostly in movable signs → they will not stay long.
• Fixed signs → they stay very long.
• Dual signs → medium term, about 5–10 years.

Example: for a couple buying a townhouse in New Jersey he gave a muhurta showing change and told them: good will come of it, you will not lose, but you will not stay long. They moved to Boston after a year to a year and a half, sold at a small profit, and the move changed their life for the better. A muhurta that shows change is sometimes the right one.

Two Beliefs Some Astrologers Hold

The teacher reports these as beliefs "in some astrologers", and uses both here.

1. Abhijit muhurta: Sun in the exact 10th house. All other evils in the muhurta are compensated.
2. Jupiter on lagna: if Jupiter is in lagna or is the lagna lord, you need not worry about anything else. (The name he gives this is garbled in the recording — it sounds like "Shairam Raksha".)

Choosing the Date, Step by Step

The natives: the husband has Leo lagna and Rohiṇī nakshatra; the wife Gemini lagna and Mṛgaśira 2nd pada. Both have Moon in Taurus.

1. Jupiter in Pisces. Jupiter enters Pisces around the start of December and stays some months. End of December or January has Jupiter in own sign.
2. Trial: 30 December. Sun is in Sagittarius with Rahu (until 15 January), 6° apart — within Rahu's reach. Mars is also in Sagittarius with Rahu.
   • Mars in Sagittarius (a friendly sign, far from Rahu if late in the sign) and Mars in Capricorn (exalted) are both fine.
   • Sun in Sagittarius (friendly sign) is much better than Sun in Capricorn (inimical sign). So stay before 15 January but get the Sun away from Rahu.
3. Trial: 7 January 2011. Sun is 15° from Rahu and moving the other way — out of Rahu's influence. Sun in Pūrvāṣāḍhā 4th pada, Scorpio navamsa (friendly). Mars vargottama at the end of Sagittarius. Mercury has entered Sagittarius (Jupiter's sign, a benefic sign — fine).
   • Sagittarius is the 8th from the natives' Moon sign, with four planets transiting it. That gives some tension anyway; moving house diverts it into setting up the new house.
   • Tithi is Śukla Chaturthī. Not a good tithi. Rejected.
4. 10 January: Śukla Saptamī, a good tithi. Moon has come into Pisces with Jupiter — Gajakesari yoga. Mars has entered Capricorn, exalted.
5. 11 January: six hours later the Sun changes navamsa — into Uttarāṣāḍhā, his own nakshatra, Sagittarius navamsa, vargottama. Sun is the husband's lagna lord, so solar strength matters. It is still Saptamī. "Had it been Aṣṭamī, we would have been in trouble."

Checks on 11 January:

• Tārā: Moon is in Revatī. From Rohiṇī that is Sādhana tārā. The wife's star is the next one, so it cannot be fixed for both; from Mṛgaśira it is Pratyak or so. "We will compromise with you."
• From the natal Moon: both are Taurus rāśi. Moon in Pisces is in the 11th for both. Good.
• Yoga: Śiva — auspicious.
• Karaṇa: an auspicious one that shows business. Its lord is the 3rd and 8th lord of the muhurta chart — a small blemish.
• Vāra: Tuesday. Some avoid Tuesday because Mars is a natural malefic. For the Leo-lagna husband Mars is the yogakaraka, the 9th lord, placed in his lagna. Tuesday is good for him. For the Gemini-lagna wife Mars is not a great planet.

The Muhurta Chart

The muhurta fixed: 11 January 2011, 10:18 AM, at the new house. Pisces lagna, so that Moon and Jupiter are in lagna.

Strengths:

• Moon + Jupiter in lagna in Pisces — Gajakesari yoga, a yoga for fame. "When you buy a house you won't become famous, but it's a good combination."
• Jupiter is lagna lord and 10th lord, Moon is 5th lord: a rāja yoga in lagna. Good things will be done in that house and children will prosper there.
• 9th lord Mars exalted in the 11th: "Bhāgya lord is exalted in the lābha sthāna. That is excellent."
• Sun, Mercury and Rahu in the 10th (Sagittarius). Sun in the 10th is the Abhijit idea.
• Sun vargottama.
• Lagna, Moon, lagna lord and Moon-sign lord are all in a dual sign → a medium stay, 5–10 years.

The 4th house (Gemini):

• Ketu is in the 4th. Ketu in the 4th is not considered good: he gives sukha-lopa.
• He is also the 9th lord (co-lord of Scorpio), so the loss of comfort is for dharmic activities.
• Ketu in a moksha trikona (4, 8, 12) is conducive to the pursuit of moksha.
• 4th lord Mercury is in the 10th and aspects his own house. A house aspected by its lord is always good.
• Moon and Jupiter in Pisces also aspect Gemini (rāśi dṛṣṭi).
• So the 4th is reasonably strong.

Weaknesses:

• Lagna is the 8th from the husband's natal lagna (Leo). That can bring 8th-house results into the house. But the 8th lord Jupiter sits in it, and a house holding its own lord is not inauspicious — the 8th lord in the 8th is an auspicious yoga. So the lagna is acceptable.
• Venus, the 3rd and 8th lord, is in the 9th. The biggest weakness.
• Saturn (7th house, Virgo) aspects lagna and Moon by graha dṛṣṭi. His hold on Moon is close; on lagna and Jupiter it is kept far by degree.
  • Bad in one way, good in another: Moon is 5th lord and Saturn 11th lord. 5th and 11th lords influencing each other is very good for financial gains and for children.
  • Moon aspected by Saturn also gives the mind some detachment.

Navamsa — Leo lagna (a student's suggestion, so that Jupiter is in navamsa lagna):

• 10:15 does not give it; 10:20 does. He settles on 10:18, so Jupiter is in the 1st house in rāśi and in the navamsa lagna.
• Sun (lagna lord) is in the 5th in Sagittarius with Moon (12th lord) and Ketu. Sun is 7° from Moon and far from Ketu by degree.
• Sun and Jupiter are in parivartana: "effectively like Moon and Jupiter are in the 5th house and Sun is in lagna."
• Yogakaraka Mars, the 9th lord, is exalted.
• Saturn, 6th lord, is in the 12th.
• Rahu, 7th lord, is in the 11th — one kāma-trikona lord in another: fulfilment of desires.
• Mercury, 2nd and 11th lord, is in the 10th: money through career.
• Venus, 3rd lord, is in the 3rd in own sign: an optimistic spirit.

Checked afterwards, not designed for:

• D-20: 10th lord in the 10th; lagna lord Venus in the 9th and 9th lord Mercury in lagna — a parivartana rāja yoga, with Jupiter also in lagna. Good for spirituality.
• D-10: the 9th and 5th lords are together, in the 10th or the 9th depending on the longitude; lagna lord Jupiter is in lagna.

"We didn't check all these, but they actually worked out nice."

What to Do in the Window

• The navamsa lagna holds from about one minute before 10:18 to six minutes after. Window: 10:18 to 10:23.
• Priests do long rituals at the door and after entry, and the actual entry ends up in some other navamsa. Tell the priest in advance. Let him finish what he wants beforehand.
• At 10:18 step inside, right foot first.
• Then go to the stove. If the priest does a pūjā to the stove before lighting it, keep it quick. "There is no point in doing a 15-minute puja and then you miss the muhurta."
• Better still, if you know how: keep the homa kuṇḍa ready, sit, take the saṅkalpa for Gaṇapati homam and light the fire within the five minutes. Start the cooking too.

Worship for this muhurta:

• Must do: Gaṇeśa for Ketu in the 4th (Gaṇapati mantra or homam at the start, as people do anyway). Lakṣmī for Venus, the 8th lord in the 9th — a Lakṣmī homam right after, with Lakṣmī Aṣṭottara, Śrī Sūkta or a Lakṣmī stotra.
• Good to do, not necessary: Hanumān for the exalted 9th lord Mars. Pārvatī and Śiva for the Moon–Jupiter combination.
• A student points out that Hanumān also covers Saturn's aspect on lagna and Moon. The teacher agrees: do Gaṇapati homam, Lakṣmī homam and perhaps a Hanumān homam on entering.

The first day:

• How much sādhana is needed to block the karmas the muhurta triggers cannot be judged exactly. With perfect focus, 108 repetitions may do it. People do not have perfect focus, so do as much as you can.
• The teacher's own griha pravesha fell on a Friday that was also Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā: the priest's homams till early afternoon, then their own pūjās and the Satyanārāyaṇa vrata — worship from 6 in the morning to 11 at night, fasting, that day without even water.

"You keep doing sadhana on the first day. The more you suffer on that day, the better it is for you."
