Return to Drik Siddhanta

For about a year the class had worked with Surya Siddhanta. PVNR had kept both sets of settings alive in the software because he "still hadn't completely given up on the Drik Siddhanta". He now goes back.

• With Surya Siddhanta he could not make progress on Chara Kārakas and above all on ārūḍha padas. "All I have is subjective things, not objective things."
• With Drik Siddhanta, Jagannatha ayanamsa and bhāva ārūḍhas taken from physical longitudes he has three researches he calls the most objective he has ever done:
  1. Viṁśottarī daśā progression,
  2. the padāṁśa correlation (a transit planet on the divisional position of an ārūḍha pada),
  3. stationary transits.
• His example: A5 in D-7 falls at about 22½° Aquarius; at the birth of the child the daśā lord was transiting 22°17′ Aquarius. Within a degree or two the daśā lord, or the 5th lord or lagna lord of the natal saptāṁśa, sits on that pada. This held "over hundreds of examples".
• Why subjective reasoning is not enough:

"To say that the 5th house is being aspected by the daśā sign, so it can give a child — this kind of analysis is very easy to justify if you are really smart and the people who are listening to you are not as fast as you."

"So that is why I said, okay, fine, I want to move in the objective direction. This is the one with which I made most progress in objective research. So I'm back here now."

• What the last year leaves behind: "If you missed all the classes in the last one year, you will not miss anything. There are just a few changes." The few things kept are in Part 3.

JHora Settings

Siddhanta and ayanamsa

• Preferences → Related to Calculations → Calculation options → "Recommended by author (Drik Siddhanta)".
• This sets Drik Siddhanta and Jagannatha ayanamsa, and carries his earlier Drik-era recommendations for sunrise, nodes and upagrahas.
• "Restore default calculation options" is a different thing: the legacy defaults, kept stable across releases. The author's recommended set changes whenever his view changes.
• Next release: the Surya Siddhanta "recommended by author" set goes away. Three sets remain — legacy defaults, his recommendations (Drik), and Vinay Jha's recommended Surya Siddhanta settings for those who want them.

Year used in the daśās

• Open any daśā → context menu → "Definition of year in daśā" → "Solar longitude based year (360 degrees)" → choose All daśās in the combo box.
• This is not covered by the "Recommended by author" default; set it by hand.
• During the Surya Siddhanta year the nakṣatra daśās ran on a different 360-unit year suggested by Vinay Jha, while Chara daśā and the like ran on solar years. Now every daśā uses the solar year: the Sun moving 360°.
• Save: Preferences → Save preferences. With two JHora windows open, the one closed last overwrites the other, so save explicitly.

Ārūḍha padas

• Preferences → Related to Calculations → Arudha pada calculation options. Also not covered by the default.
• Checked: "Use exceptions in bhava arudha pada", "Use exceptions in graha arudha pada", "Use Rahu and Ketu when stronger", "Find arudha pada of houses using exact longitudes".
• Unchecked: "Use divisional longitudes of planets".
• Meaning: Chara Kārakas and ārūḍha padas come from the physical longitudes. If the 5th lord is 105° from the 5th house, A5 is 105° further on — a longitude, not a sign. Its place in navāṁśa, daśāṁśa and so on is then found from that longitude, exactly as for a planet.

Nodes

• A student saw Jupiter alone in the example's D-4 where PVNR had Jupiter with Rāhu. Cause: mean nodes.
• Preferences → Related to Calculations → Planet calculation options: true positions, geocentric positions, true nodes.

House system

• Basics tab → Houses lower tab → context menu → "Ascendant (or the chosen reference) is the middle of the 1st house".
• The 1st house is 15° on either side of the lagna, or of any other reference.
• During the last year he had taken the reference as the start of the house (reference + 30°). That came from his misreading of Parāśara's verses on aspects. Read correctly, the aspect formulas agree with the reference as the middle of the house.
• It also settles what ṣaṣṭāṣṭaka means. With the reference as the start of a house, two planets could hardly ever be exactly 6th and 8th from each other unless they were at the same longitude.
• The "Recommended by author (Drik Siddhanta)" set may still pick the ascendant as the start of the 1st house; he will clean that up in the next release.
• In class the bhāva placement is done mentally on the rāśi chart. To see it, click the chart icon with a "B" and choose Bhāva Chakra. In North India it is called Chalita Chakra — chalita, "moved", because a planet may move out of the sign it is drawn in.

What Stays and What Goes

Stays

• Viṁśottarī daśā of the rāśi chart.
• Viṁśottarī daśā of the divisional charts — the divisional chart taken as a rāśi chart and its own Viṁśottarī computed. "I haven't fully made up my mind on this yet", but it holds up under Drik Siddhanta.
• Conditional nakṣatra daśās (Aṣṭottarī and the rest) in the rāśi chart, as before.
• Argala, rāśi dṛṣṭi, graha dṛṣṭi.
• Bhāva ārūḍhas from physical longitudes, in the divisional charts too.
• Graha ārūḍhas — used because they were used earlier, but "I am not fully convinced by them"; he has no objective correlation for them yet.
• From the last year: reading aspects from the aspect table, with Parāśara's definition of aspects as now understood, and the reference as the middle of the house.

Goes, or is used lightly

• Conditional nakṣatra daśās in divisional charts. The conditions turn on things like the lagna being in the first or second half of a sign. A divisional lagna is so sensitive to the birth time that it can be pushed either way.

"It's easy to manipulate and make multiple daśās applicable and then pick the one that actually makes some sense. We are putting so many degrees of freedom that it's very easy to delude ourselves."

• Sudarśana Chakra daśā. Sun, Moon and Lagna are all useful references, but "I don't believe we have a foolproof way of using Sudarśana Chakra daśā yet, so we will go easy on it." Looking for something common across all three references, with aspects and lagna-shapes added, lets one justify too much. "It's very easy to make any house prominent." More weight goes to the lagna.

Varṣa Adhipati — the Ruler of the Year

A student asks how he finds the ruler of the year.

• Standard definition: cast the chart of the new year for the capital of the country; the lord of the weekday is the ruler of the year.
• PVNR takes the hora lord at the moment the year begins.
• His reasoning: Ṣaḍbala uses hora lords for the month and the year. When a year is taken to begin at sunrise, the hora lord is the weekday lord — that is where the weekday convention came from. In Tithi Praveśa the hora lord is the ruler of the year.
• The hora differs from place to place, so different parts of the world get different rulers for the same year. That is how he said "Venus is the ruler of the year for this country".

Rules Raised While Reading the Chart

Gaṇḍānta

When the time was moved, the Moon went from the end of Virgo to 0° Libra. A student called it gaṇḍānta. PVNR corrected him.

• Gaṇḍānta is not the end or beginning of any sign. It is only the border where a watery sign ends and a fiery sign begins: end of Cancer / beginning of Leo, end of Scorpio / beginning of Sagittarius, end of Pisces / beginning of Aries.
• "Those portions are dangerous, but not any sign borders." A planet there can give health problems or accidents.
• Virgo/Libra is not gaṇḍānta.

Rāhu and Ketu act like their company

"Other planets, wherever they are, they remember their responsibility. Whichever house they own, they want to take care of it. In the case of Rāhu and Ketu, they care more about where they are, who they are with. Whoever they are with, they tend to act like them."

• In the example's D-10, Rāhu is with Mars in Mars's sign Aries. Mars is afflicted by Rāhu; Rāhu starts to behave like Mars.

Pṛṣṭhodaya, śīrṣodaya and ubhayodaya signs

• A planet in a pṛṣṭhodaya sign (rising with its back) gives its results towards the end of its daśā.
• A planet in a śīrṣodaya sign (rising with its head) gives them in the first third or first half.
• A planet in an ubhayodaya sign gives them in the middle.
• The only sign he names in this class is Aries: pṛṣṭhodaya.

Dvisaptati Sama daśā

• Applies when the 7th lord is in the lagna or the lagna lord is in the 7th house. (The recording garbles the name; the condition and the nine-year daśās of the example are those of Dvisaptati Sama daśā.)
• In the example the condition fails in D-1 and holds in D-10 (7th lord Mercury in the D-10 lagna). He uses it there in place of the D-10 Viṁśottarī, which did not fit the career. See Part 10.
