Saptamsha (D-7) Analysis: Children and Grandchildren

The native has two sons and no miscarriages.

• The first child is always from the 5th. Then the 7th, the 9th, and so on (each the 3rd from the last).
• D-7 lagna is Cancer, an even sign, so count backward.
• As in D-3: the sign holding the lord of the child's sign is the child's lagna.

First Child

5th from Cancer counted backward: Pisces. Lord Jupiter is in Leo with Ketu. Leo is the first child's lagna.

• Sex. Do not say "sure". Jupiter shows a boy; Ketu could have given a girl. But they are in Leo, so the boy influence is stronger.
• Jupiter and Ketu in lagna in Leo, a sāttvik sign, not Makara: a lot of spirituality.
• Does Ketu make him headless? No.

"When Ketu is alone, he tends to be headless, but when Ketu is with Jupiter, he has a head. He has Jupiter's head, which is the best head."

• So the word here is wise, not smart: mature beyond his age, good discretion. (For the elder brother the word was smart, because there Jupiter was in the 6th.)
• Moon in the 3rd: not stubborn or argumentative. Soft, gentle, cheerful, optimistic. Confirmed.
• Saturn in the 5th: the 5th lord Jupiter is in lagna, so he is intelligent, but Saturn in the 5th makes him slow in learning and in getting scholarship. He may not do as well at school as you would expect.
• A student asked whether A5 should be seen for school. PVNR: in Saptāṁśa do not give the ārūḍhas so much importance. They have a different role there. Judge from the sign itself.
• Mars in the 9th (Aries): a yogakāraka, a fiery planet in a fiery sign in the house of dharma. Strict and fiery about dharma; he follows the procedures given to him exactly. Saturn or Rahu there would have given atheistic tendencies; Mars does not.
• Mars in the 9th also shows going abroad or living away from the native country.

"Abroad" is counted from the child's own birthplace. At the end of class a student asked what foreign means for a child born in the country where the family now lives. PVNR: for that child other countries are foreign, not this one. The native then said his first son was born in India, so the strong Mars in the 9th has already taken him abroad. The 9th is counted from Leo, the child's lagna, so the result belongs to the child.

The First Child's Spouse (Upapada from Leo)

The boy is 6. The principle is the same: the Upapada counted from his lagna.

• The 12th from Leo is Cancer. Its lord Moon is in the 4th from it (Libra). The 4th from Libra is Capricorn.
• Exception given by Parāśara: an ārūḍha cannot fall in the sign itself or in the 7th from it. If it does, take the 10th from what you found. Capricorn is the 7th from Cancer, so take the 10th from Capricorn: Libra.
• (Cancer is also the D-7 lagna, so in the software this is simply AL.)
• Moon in Libra: the spouse will be very gentle, sāttvik, good with everybody, with no enemies. That much can be said with confidence. Creative, a good singer — possible, but not something to be confident about.
• Mercury in the 2nd from it: a gentle and articulate speaker.

Grandchildren (9th from that Upapada = Gemini)

• Venus is in Gemini. A planet in the sign is likely to give the first child, though the order can reverse. Venus in Gemini is a girl. "80% confidence."
• The lord Mercury is in Scorpio and can give another child, boy or girl.
• So: one grandchild with a strong Venus in the chart, one with a strong Mercury.

Taking Gemini as lagna for the grandchildren from the first son, as a group:

• Mars daśā: Mars is the 6th and 11th lord in the 11th. Many gains, of money, of friends. The best daśā.
• Moon daśā (before it; by 2040 this son will be about 42): Moon is the 2nd lord in the 5th. Fame. The grandchildren, if born by then, will be in their teens at most and will do well in education.
• Rahu daśā: Rahu co-owns Aquarius, the 9th, and is in it. Foreign connections, going abroad.

Second Child

3rd from Pisces counted backward: Capricorn. Lord Saturn is in Sagittarius. That is the second son's lagna.

• Saturn in lagna: some selfishness, using the resources for himself; more demanding. A student's word was "selfish". PVNR: a little harsh, since it is Jupiter's sign. "Jupiter will give and Saturn will take."
• Rahu in the 3rd, in his own sign Aquarius, so not bad: strong initiative, but stubborn, wanting to force his view.
• Jupiter and Ketu in the 9th: very dharmic, very spiritual. He follows the rituals and procedures.
• He is not at peace with himself as the first child is. There is an unease in him, and that is why he demands and pushes.
• The first son is easy to bring up. The second is harder, because of Saturn and Rahu on the 1st and 3rd.

Why There Is a Second Child at All: Rahu and Jupiter

Going from Pisces to Capricorn you cross Rahu in Aquarius.

• Whenever you encounter Rahu, that is the end. Normally this chart would give one child.
• If Rahu is in the child's sign, that child comes and is the last. Had Rahu been in Capricorn, the second son would have been born and been the last.
• If Rahu comes after the sign, the line stops there unless the sign beyond him is strong: Jupiter aspects it, or its lord is connected with Jupiter. Then Jupiter protects the child and the next one comes.
• Here Jupiter in Leo has rāśi dṛṣṭi on Capricorn, and Capricorn's lord Saturn is in Jupiter's sign. So the second son was born.
• Had Rahu not been in the way, Scorpio would have given a third child.

A student objected that Rahu in his own sign is stronger than Jupiter.

• Rahu's strength does not matter. Rahu wants to stop; Jupiter wants to continue.
• What matters is whether Jupiter is in a friendly sign. In a Saturnine sign he may not be able to give the next child. Here he is in the Sun's sign, a friend's.
• Since Jupiter's intervention gave this child, the boy's own chart should show a strong Jupiter. The native could not recall it. Homework: know your children's charts by heart.

Dashas for the Second Child (Sagittarius as Lagna)

• Venus daśā (running): Venus is the 6th and 11th lord, a functional malefic, in the 7th, aspecting the lagna. The 6th lord can give sickness. Not a great daśā; be watchful.
• Sun daśā (next): Sun is the 9th lord in the 6th. The 9th is protection, the 6th is service. He does very well in his job then.

Summary of the Method

• Siblings in D-3: 3rd, 5th, 7th… for younger; 11th, 9th, 7th… for elder. Children in D-7: 5th, 7th, 9th… Forward for an odd lagna, backward for an even one.
• Take the sign of the lord as that person's lagna.
• Their spouse: the Upapada from that lagna.
• Their children: the 9th from that Upapada.
