Rasi Drishti vs. Graha Drishti — The Distinction

Graha Drishti = Desire

• The 7th is the house of desire. The 7th from lagna is your desire, the 7th from Arudha Lagna the desire of your image, the 7th from any planet that planet's desire.
• So every planet aspects the 7th from itself.
• Some planets have further desires:
  • Jupiter wants to give children, ability, dharma: 5th and 9th.
  • Saturn wants you to work, and to give you the initiative for it: 3rd and 10th. According to Parashara all planets aspect the 3rd and 10th by a quarter; Saturn's aspect there is full.
  • Mars: 4th and 8th.
• "Desires may or may not be fulfilled. So graha dṛṣṭi may or may not be fulfilled."

Rasi Drishti = Permanent Influence

• It is based on where you are. A planet in Cancer always aspects Taurus.
• It does not show a result. It shows that the planet has influence — access.
• A man who lives next door to the priest can get the temple puja moved from Thursday to Friday. A man who lives far away only has the wish.

"Graha dṛṣṭi is a weaker dṛṣṭi. Compared to it, rāśi dṛṣṭi is more important."

For Marakas, Look at Both

"One wants to kill; the other one, he is in a position to kill. If you find somebody who has both — the inclination to kill as well as the position to kill — he is the one who is going to kill."

Parashara vs. Jaimini

• Contemporary books call rāśi dṛṣṭi "Jaimini aspects" and say there are two systems: do not use ārūḍha padas, argalā or sign aspects in "Parashari" astrology; Vimshottari is Parashari and Chara dasha is Jaimini.
• "That is total nonsense." Parashara taught one combined astrology. Jaimini specialised in some of it and went deeper.
• In a recent online debate, "Parashari astrology" was defined as whatever is in the works attributed to Parashara but not in the Jaimini Sutras. Some then said the surviving Parashara text is not the real one and the real one is lost. If it is lost, how do they know what it did not contain? No answer.
• "We use all of them, but with a clear meaning. We don't mix up A3 with the 3rd house."
• The bifurcations in contemporary literature are the veil of Kali on great scholars.

Christopher Reeve Chart Analysis — Animal Karakas

Birth Data: September 25, 1952, 3:12 AM, Manhattan (73°58'W, 40°47'N), time zone 4 hours west of GMT (summer time).

He did not die in the accident, but "an animal made a big difference in his life".

Rasi Chart (Cancer lagna)

• The marakas from lagna are Sun (2nd lord) and Saturn (7th lord).
• Both are with Mercury in Virgo, the 3rd house — Mercury's own house.
• Virgo is the 7th from Arudha Lagna (AL is in Pisces). From AL, Mercury is a maraka: he can trouble the material existence.
• The 3rd house is supposed to give vitality. The two lords who want to rob vitality sit in it. Mercury is the landlord, but he takes the nature of whoever he is with. Sun says kill this way, Saturn says kill that way, and Mercury in between thinks of nothing but killing.

Matula Shapa — the Maternal Uncle's Curse

The sapa yogas:

• Brahmana sapa: two or more malefics have graha dṛṣṭi on Jupiter.
• Pitri sapa (father's curse): two or more malefics aspect or join Sun, and the 9th house and 9th lord also have malefic association.
• Matri sapa (mother's curse): the same with Moon, the 4th house and the 4th lord.
• Matula sapa (maternal uncle's curse): Mercury is with or aspected by two or more malefics. Mercury shows the maternal uncle.

A curse does not mean he swore at you. You made him unhappy, sad or angry in a past life, and you suffer for it in this one. If it was big, it shows as a yoga in the chart.

In this chart Mercury is with Sun and Saturn, and Rahu (Capricorn) has graha dṛṣṭi on him — the 9th aspect. Three malefics.

So he hurt his uncle's ego, made him very sad, and the uncle felt deceived — but not angry.

Mercury is beaten down by the sapa. Mercury, Saturn or Rahu must give its result when the corresponding dasha comes.

Shashthamsa (D-6) — Enemies and Things That Come From Outside

• Mercury is the 7th lord, a maraka, in the 9th, the house of protection. "The killer is sitting in protection."
• He is with the 6th lord Sun, who shows accidents, and with A6.
• The 6th house is struggle, which is intangible. A6 is the tangible form: an accident, a fall from a horse. "Ārūḍhas show tangible things, whereas houses themselves show intangible things."

Trimshamsa (D-30) — Subconscious Evils and Suffering

• D-30 is the root: any suffering you go through has a subconscious cause within you. For any big mishap it is a very important chart.
• Even if a horse does something to you, the consciousness connecting you and the horse makes it act so.
• Mercury is the 8th lord in the 11th, the hara sthāna, and so a maraka here too.

When Did It Happen?

• The accident came in Sun mahadasha (1993–1999). The class recalled 1994 or 1995, in Sun–Rahu or Sun–Jupiter.
• In D-6 Sun is with Mercury; in D-30 Sun is with Mercury. Sun gives Mercury's results.
• In the rasi Sun is a maraka and the lord of A6.
• Exchange of results: Mercury, Sun and Saturn are together. Arrange them by beneficence: Mercury the most benefic, Sun next, Saturn the worst. The first and last exchange — Mercury gives Saturn's results, Saturn gives Mercury's — and Sun gives his own.
• Sun's own results: 2nd lord in the 3rd, which is death; and lord of A6, a tangible accident. "If it is the 6th lord, he will give suffering, but not necessarily accident. But if it is A6, it is an accident."
• His death came later, in Moon mahadasha.

Why a Horse

• Mercury carries the curse, sits with the marakas and shows the accident in D-6. Mercury is the bad planet of this chart, and the animal was a horse.

"So is horse riding a good thing for this person? No. Elephant riding is better."

• If Jupiter were the one carrying curses, joining marakas and showing accidents in the 6th, tell that person to stay away from elephants.
• Be most careful when the planet is a killer in the chart and its dasha, a period conducive to accident, is running.

Animals and Their Planetary Karakas

The Question Behind It

A student described a Native American custom: the hunter asks forgiveness of the bear he kills, and hunters who keep this respect stay successful.

The teacher:

• Whether it is a person, a bear, a cat or a dog, it is the same consciousness pervading all. Hurting a bear hurts the collective consciousness of the universe. Asking forgiveness makes the wrong a little less wrong.
• Some people are prone to harm from one particular animal. Another lives with lions and is never harmed. The classics give criteria: different animals belong to different planets.

Karakas Named in Class

The published class notes give horses to Mercury and Venus both, and cats along with tigers to Rahu.

The Maraka's Animal

• Saturn a maraka: stay away from dogs. "Even if it's your own dog, even if you are normally friendly with it, one day it can hurt you." Saturn can hurt through a person with strong Saturn, a Saturn-like person, or a dog.
• Jupiter a maraka (say 7th lord in the 8th): stay away from elephants, even if the family has kept elephants for seven generations. He will die because of an elephant or have a death-like suffering.
• Rahu a maraka: stay away from areas infested with tigers. In the chart of a state or a town, Rahu as maraka can mean deaths of a Rahu kind, of which tigers and boars are one form.

The Legend of Varahamihira

Mihira, astrologer at a king's court, saw the newborn prince's chart and said he would die on a given day at a given time, by a boar. In that year the king kept the prince on a high floor of the palace that no boar could reach. On the day, after the hour had passed, they went up and found him dead. A boar's head hung on the wall as decoration; a gust through the open window brought it down on his chest. After this Mihira was called Varaha Mihira — varāha means boar. "This is a legend."

Remedy

• Link the animal to its planet and worship the planet, or the deity of that planet. A man who works with elephants and has Jupiter as maraka should worship Jupiter every day. A circus man who works with tigers should pray to Rahu, or to Durga.
• Every consciousness is linked — yours, the animal's, the universe's. "A ritual that may seem very stupid to you may have a lot of meaning."

Pranapada Lagna — the Species of a Birth

In the Navamsa, take the Pranapada Lagna (PP):

• Moon in the 1st, 5th, 7th or 9th from PP → a human birth. "Otherwise it's not a human being."
• Sun there → a bird.
• Ketu there → a fish.
• Saturn there → a dog.

Use it to test the birth time of such a chart. Limits:

• PP moves very fast. A change of the order of half a minute changes its sign.
• Several planets may be in trines to PP together, so there are further rules. "I know only the tip of the iceberg."
• For the past life the same is done in the Shashtyamsa (D-60). That needs seconds of accuracy in the birth time. Highly speculative; nothing reliable can be said from it.
