BPHS Chapter 24 — 8th Lord in Houses 10–12 (Father, Gains, Loss)

8th Lord in 10th House

Verse result: no happiness from father; piśuna; jobless (karma-hīna) — if there is no benefic aspect

Explanation:

• No paternal happiness: the 9th shows the father and happiness from him. The 8th lord is the 12th lord from the 9th — loss of father, being away from father. In the 10th he sits in the 2nd from the 9th and so has argala on the 9th. A planet that is bad for the father, with argala on the father's house = no father, or no happiness from him.
• A student asked whether this holds for the 8th lord in the 9th. Yes, and more strongly — but in that verse Parāśara spoke only of dharma.
• Piśuna: the teacher reads it as a miser who does not spend on other people. The translation he had gave "tale-bearer", which he found unsatisfactory. He left the word to be checked in a dictionary and taken up in the next class.
• Jobless: the 8th lord is instability, and he is in the house of career. Instability in career — in case there is no benefic aspect.

8th Lord in 11th House

Verse result: no money if malefics join him; unhappy in childhood, happy later; long-lived if a benefic joins him

Explanation:

• No money: the 11th is profit and gratification of desires. The 8th lord there is instability — gains do not keep coming, desires are not satisfied. Unless profits keep coming there is no money.
• Unhappy young, happy when old — take the four kendras as anchors of life:
  • Lagna = childhood; 4th = learning; 7th = marriage and the life that follows; 10th = accomplishment.
  • From the 1st house: this planet is the 8th lord of trouble and anxiety in the 11th. Childhood desires are frustrated.
  • From the 10th house taken as lagna: the same planet is the 11th lord in the 2nd house — the lord of profit in the house of money. He accumulates resources and uses them for the work he wants to do. Old age is fruitful.
• Long life: the 11th has argala on the 8th.

"Lord of any house having Argala on that house is very good. So 8th lord has Argala on 8th, so there is a good chance of a good long life."

Argala and Longevity

• Parāśara does not say it, but the same reason applies elsewhere: the 8th lord in the 6th or in the 9th also has argala on the 8th. Those placements may also favour long life. There are many modifiers.
• In the 11th the 8th lord has argala on the lagna as well as on the 8th. Both houses that show the life of the native receive it.
• So the life is long but can be a troubled one. The 8th lord's argala on lagna shows a life with problems — the teacher corrects a student: not sin, tension. "Living for a long time with tension."

8th Lord in 12th House

Verse result: always spends on bad deeds (kukārya); short-lived — more so if a malefic joins him

Explanation:

• Spends on bad things: a planet in the 12th makes you spend. The 9th lord there would spend on dharma. The 8th is the 12th from the 9th — adharma. So the money goes to adharmic things.
• Short life: the lord of longevity is in the house of loss, of giving up.
• The other reading — Viparīta Yoga: the 8th is also tension and anxiety. Its lord in the 12th means the tensions are let go. That is good for getting over tensions and succeeding, "but it is not that good for longevity in this case".
• Spiritual progress (raised by a student): the lord of the house of sādhana is in the 12th, and he is in the 5th from his own house. The 8th is also distraction; the native can give up distractions and absorb the mind in practice. A good combination for spiritual progress.
• With a benefic instead of a malefic the results turn positive. The 8th lord in the 12th has a secondary argala on the 8th, so life can be medium or long.
• Short life here is a possibility, not a guarantee. The 8th lord in the 7th is of more concern than the 8th lord in the 12th.
