Upanayana Dasha Validation (Rahu-Mercury), Annual D24 of the Native + Maya Philosophy (Yoga Vasishtham)

Philosophical Digression — Maya and Uniformity

This came up in the middle of the alertness avasthas. PVNR was saying that the waking state feels real because it has continuity, yet a dream also has continuity over a short span. "Continuity does not really make it real."

Someone had asked him: the Advaita books say the whole world is Maya. If it is not real, why is there uniformity? Ask anyone in the room whether there is a computer here and every one of them says yes, and they agree on its colour.

PVNR's answer ("I do not have a perfect answer, but my answer is"): go to a movie.

"If I ask you, is it real or unreal? It is real at one level. It is not completely unreal. Something is happening on the screen. But is it really real? If you go to a higher level, it is maya. That guy is not really dying, that head is not really being chopped off."

• Everybody watching the movie sees the same thing — the heroine's red saree, her raised hand.
• "Just because so many people are experiencing the same thing, it doesn't mean it is real. Uniformity is not a proof of reality."
• A student added: we are all trained to call this colour yellow, so everyone sees yellow. PVNR agreed — it is conditioning of the mind.

Life as a movie

• Some people cry when the heroine suffers. Others watch as observers; they know it will end and another stream of continuity will start.
• A movie is three hours, so we can keep our distance. This life seems so long that "you just have no option other than being immersed in it" — when the hero cries, you cry.
• People who are disgusted with life escape into a movie. They know the movie is maya. They do not see that the life they are escaping from is also maya.

"What you see is not real. What you don't see is real. The only reality of the world is Brahman. Everything else is perception."

• Brahman has no guṇas. You experience it only when you are that, and then there is no experiencer apart from the experienced.

Do not dismiss the world

"Do not really dismiss all this as Maya. It is Maya, but it is reality to some extent. Just like a movie is not completely nonsense — at some level it is reality. It is partially truth but not the complete truth. It is one level of the truth."

"I am basically an Advaitin, but I accept this duality also as partial reality. You live in it, you work with the duality, whatever your dharma dictates, do that in this duality, but realize that ultimate reality is non-duality."

Book recommended

• Yoga Vasishtham — Vasishtha's teaching to Rama, given in the court before Rama left with Vishwamitra, and recorded by Valmiki. "The most brilliant book on Advaita I have ever read."
• The English translation by Swami Venkateshananda, a disciple of Swami Sivananda, is published as Vasishtha's Yoga. Venkateshananda used to listen to Sivananda's talks all day on train journeys and write them down word for word at night from memory.
• PVNR: translations of a Maharshi's work rarely carry the essence, but this one does — "some amsa of Vasishtha must have entered him and finished this work."

Dasha Analysis — Is the Chosen Time Supported by Dasha?

Two daśās were checked: the natal daśā, and the daśā of the Tithi Praveśa year.

Natal daśā — Mars / Moon

• The boy runs Mars daśā until 2016. Mars is yogakāraka and 9th lord for Leo lagna.
• At the event the antardaśā is the Moon's, running from March 2007 to March 2008. Can the Moon give an upanayana?
  • Rāśi: Moon is in Leo, in the Ārūḍha of the 5th (Mantrapada).
  • Navamsa: Moon is in the 5th house (Sagittarius from Leo lagna).
  • D-20: Moon is in own sign Cancer. The D-20 lagna is Virgo; the Moon aspects the 5th, Capricorn, by graha dṛṣṭi and has argala on the 5th lord Saturn (Moon is 5th from Saturn in Pisces).
• "So that 1-year period is a good period for giving him a new mantra."

Tithi Praveśa year — Rahu / Mercury

• The Tithi Praveśa for 2006–07 falls on December 13, 2006 (Mārgaśira Kṛṣṇa Navamī, the birth tithi). The Hora Lord, ruler of the year, is Jupiter.
• By the Tithi Ashtottari daśā of that year, August 26, 2007 is in Rahu daśā, Mercury antardaśā.
• The reading is done in the D-20 of the annual chart (Virgo lagna).

Rahu

• Rahu is in Taurus in the 9th and owns the 6th. Venus is in Aquarius, so Rahu and Venus are in parivartana and Rahu gives results as though he were in Aquarius. "All those do not really matter."
• What matters: A5 is in Scorpio. Ketu is its lord, and Ketu sits with Rahu in Taurus, aspecting A5 by graha dṛṣṭi.
• This daśā has no Ketu period. "Rahu daśā is actually Rahu daśā and Ketu daśā. Ketu's daśā is given in Rahu's period."

"This upanayana is not Rahu's season. This is actually Ketu's season. Ketu is the lord of A5 and he is in the 9th house of dharma. So can he give upanayana? Yeah, he can."

Mercury

• Mercury is exalted in lagna.
• From Rahu and Ketu in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo is in the 5th — the mantra-sthāna from the daśā lord.
• Bhoga: Mercury is 5th from Rahu, so count 5 from Mercury — Capricorn, the 5th from lagna.

"Antardaśā lord is in the 5th house from daśā lord, mantra-sthāna. And the bhoga of antardaśā lord from the daśā lord is in the mantra-sthāna from lagna. So mantra being given in Rahu daśā, Mercury antardaśā is a very auspicious thing."

"We were guided towards a very auspicious time. Even though we did not have this consideration when we did it."

The site's own Tithi Praveśa moment (5:42 PM EST, lagna Gemini 19°23′) gives Leo D-20 lagna and Scorpio D-24 lagna. The class chart has Virgo and Sagittarius, which needs the lagna past Gemini 20° — about four minutes later. The chart on this page is cast at 5:46 PM so that it shows the vargas read in class. Annual Chart 2006–07 — Rasi and D24

"Forget the upanayana. How is the year in general?"

Tithi Praveśa chart of December 13, 2006. Gemini lagna. Ruler of the year: Jupiter.

Rāśi chart of the year

• Jupiter is in the 6th in Scorpio with Sun, Mars and Mercury.
• Sun is the 3rd lord, Mars the 6th lord in own sign — "3rd lord and 6th lord ganging up in the 6th house in a very dynamic sign", with good advisors Jupiter and Mercury.
• Saturn and Ketu are in the 3rd in Leo. Four malefics — Mars, Sun, Saturn, Ketu — in upachayas, the 3rd and 6th.
• Reading: a year of aggressive activity; he overcomes whatever problems come. Health troubles, if any, are easily overcome.
• "At school he should be careful, not fight too much, because he may be a little aggressive during this year."
• A student asked whether school needs D-24. PVNR: no. Malefics in the 3rd and 6th of the Rāśi chart show struggle that is overcome; for a child that struggle is at school because that is where his life is. D-24 shows whether he is learning well.

D-24 of the year — strengths

Sagittarius lagna.

• Jupiter — Hora Lord and lagna lord — is in Pisces in the 4th with exalted Venus. "He is extremely strong." Venus owns the 6th and 11th, but these are two benefics together.
• AL and A7 are both in the 4th with them.

"The 4th house is especially the controlling house in D-24. The 4th house is the house of learning, and AL is right there. So he is seen as somebody who is learning very well."

• AL is his image in learning. A7 is his interactions. Both with Jupiter and Venus: a very good image, and moving with smart, good people.
• 5th house (recognition, marks): Mars and Moon — Chandra-Maṅgala yoga — with the 5th lord Mars in own sign. Moon is the 8th lord, but the 8th is working hard for learning.
• 7th house: Mercury in own sign Gemini. The 7th is maraṇa kāraka sthāna for Mercury, but he is in his own house.
• 4th, 5th and 7th are all good. He does well and is recognised for it.

D-24 of the year — the weak point

"Sun is with Rahu Ketu. If you ask me, that is the weakest point. That is the really terrible point."

• Sun is the 9th lord — the guidance received from teachers. Saturn sits in the 9th and already weakens it.
• Sun is in the 6th with Rahu and Ketu. Nodes in the 6th are good by themselves, and upachaya lords in upachayas are good. The 9th lord joining them is not, and that lord being the Sun is worse: he is eclipsed.
• Result: struggle and obstacles from bad teaching or bad guidance. "Some teacher may turn into enemy or some teacher may harass." The Sun as 9th lord is also authority — some father figure at school can give trouble.
• Quarrels at school too: the 6th was active in the Rāśi chart and is afflicted here as well.
• "That is the only weakness. As far as studies are concerned, he will do quite well."

The school — A4

A student asked how to see the school itself. The 4th is learning; A4 is the tangible things of that learning — the primary school.

• A4 is in Sagittarius, in lagna: a new beginning. School-wise things are fine.
• Its lord Jupiter is with Venus, the 6th lord.
• Argala on A4: Venus and Jupiter from the 4th, Mars and Moon from the 5th. Venus is 6th lord, Moon 8th lord, Mars 12th lord — "all the three duṣṭhāna lords are causing argala on A4."
• So a change of school or of its location is likely this year. (The parents said they were in fact thinking of it.)
• After the change there may be trouble with a teacher or an authority, but in studies he does well and is seen as a smart kid.

Timing

• The trouble comes mainly in the Sun and Rahu daśās of the year.
• Sun's daśā falls at the turn of the year. Rahu's falls when he is not at school.
• A planet that cannot deliver in its own period can get it done through another that has argala on the house — "when my friend has keys, I can make some arrangement with my friend so that he can do my work for me." So some other daśā may still give the result.
• "In November–December time frame, he should be a little watchful at school, not pick up fights."

Dasha Rules in Brief

1. In the daśā used with the Tithi Praveśa chart there is no Ketu period. Rahu's period gives Ketu's results.
2. Antardaśā lord in the 5th from the daśā lord, with the bhoga in the 5th from lagna, gives a mantra.
3. A planet in or lording A5 (Mantrapada), linked to the 5th in navamsa and D-20, can give a mantra in its period.
