When to Expect a Guru in Druk Dasha

The question came up while reading the first chart: how do we see whether one meets a guru in a period?

Three planets to pick out, all from the natal chart:

1. The 9th lord from the natal lagna
2. The 9th lord from natal Jupiter
3. The Bhrātṛkāraka (BK, the chara kāraka of guru)

Jupiter, the naisargika kāraka of guru, is also key.

The rule: when one of these planets is in the Druk Dasha sign, or aspects it, with a strong and positive influence, that dasha can bring a guru — or, if the guru is already met, a lot of guidance from him.

• The influence is judged on the dasha sign itself, not on the 5th from it. We are looking for a guru, so we want the progressed 9th house, and the dasha sign is the 9th from the progressed lagna.
• The lords are taken from the natal lagna, not from the progressed lagna. A student asked this directly and was told: "To see the guru, we see the natal lagna."
• The aspect in the worked examples is rāśi dṛṣṭi.
• A strong 9th house from the progressed lagna, in both the natal chart and the Dasha Pravesha Chakra, says the same thing: very good guidance in that period.

"The rule is: if the Bhrātṛkāraka is in the Druk Dasha sign, or the 9th lord from lagna is in the Druk Dasha sign or aspecting it, there is a good chance that the person will meet a guru during that time."

The 3rd house. A student pointed out that a BK or 9th lord placed in the 3rd from the progressed lagna aspects the 9th. The teacher agreed: the 3rd is the 7th from the 9th and is also the house of communication, so it matters for the guru's instruction.

The rule is applied to the 1953 chart in Part 2 (Leo and Gemini dashas) and to the 1961 chart in Part 5.

Antardashas Within Scorpio Dasha (1953 Chart)

The method

• Antardashas start from the 7th sign from the dasha sign. For Scorpio dasha they start from Taurus.
• The lagna for an antardasha is the 11th sign from the antardasha sign.
• Each antardasha is read in its own pravesha chart, cast for the moment that antardasha begins. In this eight-year dasha each antardasha runs eight months.
• Antardashas show only slight ups and downs. An antardasha is named as the time of a result only when it stresses the same house that the dasha's natal chart and Dasha Pravesha Chakra already stress. In this chart none of them did so clearly.

"If you see something in the Dasha Pravesha Chakra, in the dasha result as well as the antardasha result, you can say: in this dasha this will happen, and this is the antardasha in which it will happen."

The eight antardashas read in class (placements are those of each antardasha's pravesha chart):

Notes on single antardashas

• Virgo. Jupiter is also 6th lord from Cancer. But he is the natural kāraka of guru, he owns the 9th, and he aspects the lagna, so it is auspicious.
• Aries. The 11th does not stand out in the natal chart or in the Dasha Pravesha Chakra of the dasha. So the teacher promised only some happiness and fulfilment in those eight months, not a major result.
• The 6th house gives two kinds of result. One is siddhi. The other is overcoming obstacles and rendering service to spiritual causes in society. A strong 2nd house, as in the Capricorn antardasha, favours the second kind.
• Leo and the 3rd house. A student read the strong 3rd as "he will write books". The teacher's answer: most people do not write books about their spiritual pursuit, so that is a very specific result to give. In general the 3rd shows the passion and determination behind the pursuit.

"Saying that he will write a book on spirituality will be a little bit of a stretch, though not wrong."

Overall. The 2nd, 6th and 10th houses, the artha trikonas, keep coming up across the antardashas. The whole Scorpio dasha is a dasha of karma yoga.

On Gurus and Their Blemishes

A student said it puts him off when a guru he respects is caught up in a scandal. The teacher said this was not astrology, and answered at some length.

• A scandal does not prove wrongdoing. Jealous people spread rumours. And anyone in a body carries karma, even a rishi or an avatar: Rama himself had to go through misfortune. A liberated being may accept such karma and not care about the defamation.
• The scandal may also be true. This is Kali Yuga. You cannot judge a person's spiritual state by looking at him or by asking those around him. Only your own inner vision is reliable.
• Enlightenment comes in steps. A person can have gone far, with powers and a following, and still have weaknesses.
• It does not matter to you where others stand. Dattatreya counted a dog, a bird and a cow among his gurus. Take good guidance from wherever it comes.
• Guidance comes from within you. If you are pure, the guru's blemishes do not touch you; they touch only him.
• The word guru means one who removes darkness. One who teaches a subject is an acharya, not a guru in the strict sense.
• If you accept someone as guru with a pure heart and look on him as Shiva, he becomes Shiva for you, and what he gives will benefit you. Your faith can even remove his blemishes.

"You have to just focus on your own purity and not really worry too much about the purity of other beings."

Periods for Guidance from a Guru

The guru rule of Part 1 applied to this chart, from the natal lagna:

• Bhrātṛkāraka = Rahu. 9th lord from lagna = Sun. 9th lord from Jupiter = Mercury.
• Mercury is in Virgo. Virgo dasha contains him, and he aspects the other three dual signs by rāśi dṛṣṭi. So Virgo, Gemini, Pisces and Sagittarius dashas, running from 1990 to 2026, all favour guidance from a guru.
• Sun and Rahu are in Leo and aspect Aries, Libra and Capricorn.
• So for most of his life he runs dashas of signs aspected by Mercury or by Sun and Rahu. He is well guided throughout.
• The current Gemini dasha is aspected by Mercury in its Dasha Pravesha Chakra as well, so both charts support it.
