BPHS Ch.33 v53-60: Jupiter+Sun in 9th=Self-Righteous Guru-Drohi (NOT from Disbelief; from Ego-Certainty); Venus+Mars+6 Vargas=Paradarika; Mercury+Moon=Wavering Compass; Jupiter Alone in 9th D30=Sensual (NOT in D9); 10th: Benefic=Stable+Dignified, Mercury+Venus=Gainful Work, Sun+Moon+Jupiter=Royal Position
Verse 53 — Jupiter+Sun in 9th from Karkamsa = Guru-drohi: "will not give respect to guru's words." Why: "King (Sun) + priest (Jupiter) together = native feels supremely confident his own sense of dharma is correct; he may even be right, but certainty is so strong he won't listen even to a good guru." CONTRAST with Saturn+Rahu in 9th (prev.) = guru-drohi from skepticism/disbelief; Jupiter+Sun = from self-righteous ego-certainty. "He is not abandoning dharma — his soul has a strong sense of 'this must be done.'" Verse 54 — Venus+Mars in 9th + Shadwarga criterion (6+ vargas): Paradarika (licentious affairs). "Needs to appear in D9, D30, D60, D16 — multiple overlapping vargas; same combination can also show fiery unstoppable passion to accomplish one's mission (build temple, serve mankind)." Verse 55 — Mercury+Moon in 9th: "Parastri sangamad balo bandhako" = causes trouble/imprisonment through wavering moral compass. "Moon = emotionally changeable; Mercury = highly variable; two wavering planets = no firm moral compass; sense of dharma changes with the wind — person not necessarily bad but does bad acts because compass keeps shifting." Positive: Moon+Mercury = gentle, diplomatic, non-hurting. Verse 56 — Jupiter alone in 9th: Tri lo rupo (sensual excess) IF weak. CRITICAL: "This applies ONLY in D30 or D6 — never apply in D9. In D9 (dharma chart), even weak Jupiter gives some sense of dharma. In D30 (evils chart), weak Jupiter can misdirect abundance toward sensual pursuits." Verses 57-58 — 10th from Karkamsa: benefic = stable wealth, dignified/composed (Gambhira) conduct, intelligent; malefic = trouble in career (D10) + no father happiness (D12). "10th from Karkamsa = soul's inner sense of karma and relationship with father — not guaranteed outer reality." Verse 59 — Mercury+Venus in 10th: gainful, profitable, great deeds ("earth+water = productive stability"). Verse 60 — Sun+Moon+Jupiter in 10th: Rajabhag = king-like position, treated with royal respect.
"Jupiter and Sun together in the 9th from Karkamsa give a different kind of guru-drohi. Not the skeptic who thinks it is all humbug. This person has the king and the priest combined in his sense of dharma. He has such confidence in his own rightness that even if the guru says "no, you should not do this," his soul says: "No, this must be done." He may even be right. But that certainty makes him impossible to guide. The other type — Saturn and Rahu — abandons the guru from disbelief. This type abandons from overconfidence."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Ch.33 — Verse 53: Jupiter + Sun in 9th from Karkamsa
Sanskrit: "Karakamsachyanaume guru bhanu yute ekshite tadapi guru-drohishyaad guru vakyam na manyate"
Condition: 9th house from Karkamsa is conjoined or aspected by Jupiter (Guru) and/or Sun (Bhanu)
Result: "Tadapi" (even then) he will be Guru-drohi — will let down / disappoint the guru; will not give respect to the guru's words
PVNR comparison — Two types of Guru-drohi:
| Combination | Mechanism | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn + Rahu in 9th (prev. lesson) | Skeptic, non-believer; "this is all humbug" | Abandonment due to disbelief; also ignores shastras |
| Jupiter + Sun in 9th | Strong sense of self-righteous "I know what's right"; overconfidence in own dharma | Ignores guru NOT from disbelief, but from ego-certainty |
Why Jupiter+Sun causes this:
- 9th from Karkamsa = soul's sense of duty/dharma (not just "guru")
- Sun = authority, kingly ego; Jupiter = wisdom
- When Sun and Jupiter combine in the 9th from Karkamsa → king + priest together = the native feels supremely confident that his own sense of dharma is correct
- He may even be right about his dharma, but his certainty is so strong he will not listen even to a good guru
- Contrast: this comes from strong sense of rightness (not from disbelief)
— PVNR"He has so much confidence in his sense of right that even if guru says 'no, you should not do this,' he thinks: 'No, this must be done.' His soul has such a strong sense of 'this must be done.'"
Caveat: Even a right sense of duty can be incomplete. A good guru may see a higher dharma. If one has perfect faith in a true guru, blind surrender (even when it doesn't make sense) is spiritually best. But without a perfect guru, wavering faith is no good anyway.
BPHS Ch.33 — Verse 54: Venus + Mars in 9th from Karkamsa (Shadwarga Criterion)
Sanskrit: "Shukrabhoma jyotekshite shadwarga adhika yogetu maranam paradarikam"
Condition: Venus and Mars aspecting or conjoining the 9th from Karkamsa; and this yoga exists in more than 6 vargas (Shadwarga adhika)
Result: Paradarika = affair with another person's spouse
Why Venus+Mars:
- Venus = karka for sensual pleasure, relationships
- Mars = aggression, excess
- Combined = fiery passion and licentiousness in Venusian matters
- In the 9th from Karkamsa (dharma house of the soul) → licentiousness robs one of the sense of dharma
Why Shadwarga criterion (6+ vargas):
— PVNR"This result requires the yoga to appear not just in one varga but in multiple vargas. If it appears in D9, D30, D60 — 2 or 3 of these — then there is a good chance the person actually has this effect."
- Relevant vargas: D9 (dharma), D30 (sins/evils), D60, D16 (pleasures) — multiple overlap needed
- Same logic can be positive: Venus-Mars in 9th from Karkamsa can also show fiery passion to build a temple or accomplish one's mission with unstoppable determination
BPHS Ch.33 — Verse 55: Mercury + Moon in 9th from Karkamsa
Sanskrit: "Gnaindu yukte kshite edvijah parastri sangamad balo bandhako bhavati dhruvam"
Condition: Mercury (Gna/Budha) and Moon (Indu) conjoining or aspecting the 9th from Karkamsa
Result: "Parastri sangamad balo bandhako bhavati dhruvam" — he causes imprisonment through affairs with another's wife; controversy and trouble
Why Mercury + Moon:
- Moon = emotionally changeable, wavering (full → empty → half → one-third); unstable
- Mercury = unstable, highly variable in nature
- Two wavering planets in 9th from Karkamsa = no firm moral compass; sense of dharma changes with the wind
- Person is not necessarily bad, but he does bad acts because his compass keeps shifting
- Can cause trouble for himself and others; very unreliable person
Positive side (if strong):
- Moon = gentleness; Mercury = diplomacy → person may be very gentle, diplomatic, artistic, non-hurting
- Strong Mercury+Moon in 9th → sense of dharma = "do not hurt anyone, be nice with all"
BPHS Ch.33 — Verse 56: Jupiter Alone in 9th from Karkamsa
Sanskrit: "Naume kevalena va guru natha jyutek shite tri lorupho bhaved jata vishayi kevajayate"
Condition: Jupiter alone (no other planet) in the 9th from Karkamsa (conjoining or aspecting)
Result: "Tri lo rupo" = addicted to women / pursues them excessively; "Vishayi" = given to sensual pleasures
Why Jupiter?:
- Jupiter = planet of abundance (Kapha) → gives strong physical vitality → has the capacity to engage in enjoyments
- When Jupiter is weak (debilitated, in enemy/Venusian sign, afflicted) → abundance is misdirected toward sensual pursuits
CRITICAL CAVEAT — Which Varga?:
— PVNR"This result applies to D30 (Trimshamsa) or D6 (Shashthamsa), NOT to D9. In D9 (chart of dharma), even a weak Jupiter will give some sense of dharma. In D30 (chart of evils), a weak Jupiter can give excess in sensual pleasures."
Never apply verse 56 in Navamsa — in D9, any association of Jupiter with the 9th from Karkamsa gives dharma. The intensity/strength of dharma may vary, but direction is always toward dharma.
BPHS Ch.33 — Verses 57-58: 10th from Karkamsa (Karma/Conduct)
Verse 57 — Benefic in 10th from Karkamsa:
- "Thiravitto bhaved balaha gambhiraha bala buddhimaan"
- Stable wealth/income; dignified conduct; strong and intelligent; well-composed in social life
- Gambhira = dignified/composed, not just "reserved"
Verse 58 — Malefic in 10th from Karkamsa:
- "Vyapare jayate haani hi pithor saukhena vadjithaha"
- Trouble in work/livelihood; devoid of father's happiness
- Divisional split: Trouble in work → D10; Loss of father's happiness → D12
PVNR note (Karkamsa philosophy):
— PVNR"10th from Karkamsa is not concrete — it shows the soul's inner sense of its karma and its relationship with father. A malefic in 10th from Karkamsa means the soul doesn't deeply aspire for a strong relationship with father or stable livelihood. These are abstract inner senses, not guaranteed concrete events."
