D-4 (Chaturthamsa) — The Chart of Residence and Bhagya

The student's question: when will he get his green card? The teacher does not answer questions on a student's own chart; he guides the class to guess.

Karaka and Houses

• "Who is the karaka for green card? Don't tell me it's Mercury because Mercury shows green colour."
• Rahu is the karaka for going to a faraway place and settling there.
• 12th house — settling in a faraway place. 9th house — prosperity, fortune; permanent residence granted to an immigrant is a matter of fortune.
• For going abroad: the 7th, 9th and 12th, and the badhakasthana. The badhakasthana can take a man away from his homeland.
• Planets in the 3rd house give travel.
• Watery signs matter too: the classics speak of them because going abroad meant crossing the ocean.

D-4

• Parasara calls it the chart of bhagya. "We use it as the chart of residence."
• The time is tested on the D-4 first, against a known event. Whether the time is right for some other varga is not known; for the D-4 it works.

Which Pada — A8, A4 or A9?

• A student suggests A8 (mrityu pada). A8 is the tangible side of the 8th: changes, upsets, anxiety. In the D-4 it shows tangible changes of residence — a day in a hotel, a month at a friend's house, then an apartment. Travel can come in an A8 dasha. A green card is not that.
• Another suggests A4. A4 is the physical house you live in.
• The answer is A9. The 9th is fortune; A9 is the tangible manifestation of fortune. You may feel fortunate (9th house); the people back home see "he went abroad, he is a great engineer there, he is making so much money". For someone from a poor country, permanent residence in a rich one is a great fortune made tangible.

"Getting a green card is a tangible manifestation of his fortune with respect to residence. So A9 is the pada that is very important."

• A9 is only one factor. "Don't just go by A9. Look at all the factors": 9th house and lord, 12th house and lord, badhakasthana and badhakesha, watery signs, Rahu and Ketu, and in the annual chart the Paradesa and Jalapatana sahamas. Predict when several of them come together.

Guru-Chandala Yoga in the D-4 — Coming to the US

The Natal D-4

• D-4 lagna is Gemini. Dasha used: Shatabdika.
• Badhakasthana for Gemini is the 7th, Sagittarius. Jupiter is badhakesha.
• Jupiter is in the 3rd house (Leo), the house of travel, with Rahu.
• Rahu is the karaka for going abroad and also the 9th lord: Aquarius is shared by Saturn and Rahu. "Rahu and Ketu are the homeless people in the planetary panchayat. Saturn and Mars were kind and shared their houses with them."
• So the 9th lord and the badhakesha are joined in the house of travel.

The Event

• First visit: about two months, in Jupiter dasha. Second and lasting arrival: June 16, 2000, in Jupiter–Mercury.
• Planets together exchange results. Jupiter gives Rahu's results. Mercury is with Ketu (in Aquarius, the 9th) and gives Ketu's results.
• So Jupiter–Mercury worked as Rahu–Ketu, and he was taken away from his homeland.
• Bhoga rasi: Mercury is 7th from Jupiter; the 7th from Mercury is the 3rd house again. The result experienced in that antardasha is travel. A student objects that the 3rd is short travel — but this bhoga rasi holds Jupiter and Rahu, badhakesha and 9th lord, so it can give foreign travel.

Why Guru-Chandala Does Not Spoil It

• Jupiter with Rahu is Guru-Chandala yoga, in general a bad yoga. Rahu is adharma, Jupiter is dharma; they do not work well together.
• That holds in rasi, navamsa, dasamsa.
• Going to a faraway place is not a matter of dharma. It is a matter of bhagya.

"When you are talking about going to a faraway place, they don't have such hang-ups. It is not a matter of dharma anyway."

• "Don't keep it in your mind that Jupiter and Rahu are enemies, they will destroy each other. They don't care in this particular matter." They conspire and exchange results; Jupiter ended up giving the result of both.

A9 and the Green Card — Reading the Natal D-4

He is running the long Mars dasha of Shatabdika (2001 to 2021 in the published class notes). Can it give a green card?

• Mars is the lord of A9 (A9 is in Scorpio). So yes.
• A9 alone is not enough. He should also feel fortunate, so the 9th house itself must take part. "A9 is more important, but there should be some commonality between the 9th and A9."

Saturn in the 4th

• Saturn is a 9th lord and sits in the 4th house (Virgo).
• The 9th is the pursuit of fortune, the 4th is home. A malefic in the 4th can give a home in a faraway place.
• From Virgo Saturn has argala on A9 (he is 11th from Scorpio) and graha drishti on A9 (his 3rd aspect).
• Graha drishti is desire: he wants to give bhagya. Argala is the capacity to deliver it. Both together is stronger.
• Conclusion: the green card should come in Saturn's antardasha of Mars dasha.

Rahu or Saturn as 9th Lord — Where Is A9?

A student objects that the arudha depends on which lord of Aquarius is taken.

• Counted from Rahu, A9 is in Scorpio. Counted from Saturn it would be in Aries — still a sign of Mars, but then Saturn would not have argala on it.
• Rule: of two co-lords, the one joined by more planets is the primary lord. Rahu is with Jupiter, so Rahu is primary — for arudha padas and for Narayana dasha. That is what the software takes.
• Saturn remains co-lord of the 9th and keeps his argala on A9.

Even a pratyantardasha here is two years long. So the class moves to the annual charts.
