Arudha Padas — How to Read One (Q3)

House First, Arudha Second

• Is the person fortunate? The 9th house from Lagna decides.
• What kind of fortune, as the world sees it? A9 and the influences on it.
• 9th house weak, A9 very strong (an exalted planet in A9, A9 in a trine from Lagna, its lord in a trine): the true fortune is not there but the apparent fortune is strong. A disconnect between reality and what the world thinks.
• PVNR's example: a businessman who tells everybody he knows all the big shots and is starting a 50-crore business. People put their money in, and it collapses.
• For something sustainable the house must be strong. If the Arudha is not strong, that does not matter: the Arudha only shows what the fortune is; the house shows whether he is fortunate.

Three Things to See in an Arudha Pada

1. The sign and the house it falls in. A9 in a sign of Jupiter: the visible fortune has to do with Jupiter — temples, for instance. A9 in a sign of Mercury: he is seen as a successful journalist, businessman, trader or educationist. A9 in the 12th house: a fortunate person who is very generous and spends a lot; or one who is very spiritual; or one who flourishes abroad — "he went to America and is doing so well there".
2. The planets aspecting it. Use rasi drishti. Graha drishti is a desire and manifests only in a particular dasha.
3. Its lord — where he is and which yogas he takes part in.

There are several meanings and the other influences decide between them. Even a careful choice can be wrong and may have to be reconsidered.

Example Chart: A Student's A9

A student asked about her own chart: 9th lord exalted, in the 6th house, combust, with A9 in the 12th. Leo lagna. Sun, Mars and Saturn in Capricorn in the 6th; Venus in Aquarius in the 7th; Moon, Mercury and Ketu in Sagittarius in the 5th.

Step 1 — the 9th house

• A planet never forgets the houses he owns. The 9th lord's agenda is fortune.
• The house he occupies shows the resources he has access to. PVNR's picture: he has to look after his own house while he is somewhere else, so he uses the people and things available where he is.
• Mars, 9th lord, exalted: very good. In the 6th: the resources are service, obstacles, fighting back. He gives fortune and protection, but she has to fight to keep it. Being Mars, he also gives the energy to overcome the trouble.
• Mars is also the yogakaraka for Leo. PVNR set the other house aside and looked only at the 9th.

Combustion of Mars

• PVNR: combustion is overrated.
• Take water near the Sun and it becomes steam: there is no more water. Take Venus too close to the Sun and there is no more Venus.
• Mars is himself fire. Fire near fire is in good company — the chief of the army with the king, trading stories of bravery. Both are Kshatriyas.
• Jupiter combust (Guru Maudhya) worries many people. Sun and Jupiter are good friends, the king and the priest, both sattvic. Combustion matters less for Mars and Jupiter than for most other planets.
• Here the combustion means 9th lord Mars is very close to lagna lord Sun: a very powerful Raj Yoga, even though it occurs in Saturn's sign.
• A Mars very close to Sun starts to behave like Sun, as an army chief close to the king starts giving orders as if he were king.
• Conclusion: very fortunate, but she will have to struggle and fight back to keep the fortune.

Step 2 — A9

• With the 9th lord in the 6th, A9 falls in the 12th: Cancer.
• 12th house: the visible fortune is tied to some kind of giving up — giving up one's country or money, renunciation, moksha. In her case: flourishing in a faraway country, far from her roots.
• Aspects: Taurus, Aquarius and Scorpio have rasi drishti on Cancer. Only Aquarius is occupied — by Venus.
• Venus is the karaka of marriage, sits in the 7th house, and is the lord of the Upapada (Taurus). Karaka, house and Arudha all point to marriage, so marriage is the reading: fortune from marriage, becoming fortunate after marriage, fortune through the spouse.
• A student proposed fortune through career instead. PVNR: that would need the 10th-house karakas (Saturn, Mercury or Sun) involved as well.
• It is correlation, not cause and effect. It can equally be that she has fortune in a faraway country written in her chart and brings it to her husband.
• Had the 9th lord or Sun aspected A9, the fortune could be through the father.

Step 3 — the lord of A9

• Moon, lord of A9, is in the 5th house with Mercury and Ketu.
• Mercury is the lord of Arudha Lagna (AL is in Gemini). The lords of AL and A9 are together — almost like lagna lord and 9th lord together.
• Ketu is with them, "and that is very bad". Rahu and Ketu with Moon bring Moon down, like an eclipse. Had it been only Mercury and Moon, it would be a very auspicious combination and people would think her a very fortunate person.

Arudha-Based Raj Yoga

• The lord of AL is whoever is behind the image the world holds of the person. The lord of A9 is whoever is behind the image of his fortune in people's minds — not his true fortune, which belongs to the 9th lord.
• The two together: the world sees him as a fortunate person. A Raj Yoga at the level of perception.
• The true Raj Yoga is lagna lord and 9th lord together — in this chart, Sun and Mars.
• For political leaders and other successful public people, Arudha-based Raj Yogas are more important than the true ones.

Ketu in a Maya-Based Yoga

"We are talking about an Arudha, Maya-based Raj Yoga, and Ketu will say: What Raj Yoga? This is all nonsense. This is all Maya. Get moksha — that is the only reality."

• Had it been a Lagna-based Raj Yoga with Ketu involved, it would not be that bad.
• Ketu is a bad planet to associate with an Arudha-based yoga, unless he is himself in charge of some Maya. If A10 were in Scorpio and Ketu were its stronger lord, his job would be to further that image, and his presence in the yoga would be less harmful.

Transits on Arudha Padas (Q4)

A student asked whether transits matter to the Arudhas — Saturn was then entering Cancer, the sign of her A9. Yes. The natal chart fixes the fortune and the image; transits modify them.

Transit Rules from Arudha Lagna

On the example chart (AL in Gemini): Saturn had spent the previous two and a half years in Gemini, on AL — a very bad transit. Jupiter was then in the 4th from AL — a very good one. Jupiter's next sign, the 5th from AL, would be a bad one.

The Reasoning PVNR Was Given

• Quadrants from AL are the effort that sustains the image. Tell Jupiter to put in effort for the image and he does.
• Trines are the houses of blessing, the Lakshmi sthanas. Jupiter has no interest in Maya. Asked to bless the image, the only blessing he can give is to remove the veil of ignorance. A bloated image loses its bloat; a politician who got more than he deserved has setbacks.
• Rahu and Ketu, told to bless Maya, love it. Jupiter is happy with trines from Lagna; Rahu and Ketu are happy with trines from Arudha Lagna.

"This is what I was taught by my gurus, and I am not fully convinced by the logic."

He asks students to test it.

Transit Only — Natal Is the Reverse

• Jupiter in the 9th from AL in the natal chart protects the image. Transiting that house, he gives a setback "so that you understand your level".
• Rahu in the 5th from AL in the natal chart is not a good combination. Transiting the 5th from AL, he is good.

Conjunction and Parivartana — Exchange of Results (Q5)

Two Kinds of Exchange

• Conjunction (yoga): two planets together give each other's results, provided they are comfortable with each other. Two people sharing a room pick up each other's qualities; two enemies who face opposite walls do not. Sun and Rahu, or Mars and Rahu, do not exchange. Rahu eclipsing Sun says, "I want to destroy the Sun. What do you mean, give his results?"
• Parivartana: X lord in Y house and Y lord in X house. They exchange results too.

When Both Occur

A planet in parivartana with one planet and conjunct others: which exchange happens first is very tough to predict.

"I was not taught any thumb rules to decide the order in such cases. So I either go by my instincts, or if I already know something, I draw my conclusion based on it."

Is Parivartana Good or Bad?

Any exchange is a yoga. Whether it is a good yoga or a duryoga depends on which houses exchange.

• The librarian looks after the temple and the priest looks after a library of religious books: both do a good job and each place is enriched. A good yoga.
• The priest becomes the prison guard and the prison guard becomes the priest: the guard beats devotees who move during the puja, the priest frees the prisoners. Both places are destroyed.

• The two planets count as well as the two houses. An exchange between friendly planets gives a good yoga; between enemies, a bad one.

Exchange Within One Trikona

• The 3rd is not strictly a dusthana, the 7th is a quadrant, and both are in the Kama trikona.
• The 3rd is initiative; the 7th is desire. Each lord sits in a house that suits his agenda and enriches it.
• The yoga gives strong desire and strong initiative. Whether that leads to something good or to frustration depends on the rest of the chart.
• The same holds for the Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha trikonas: two of the three lords exchanging is usually good for that trikona and makes it prominent.

Mahapurusha Yoga — Triggers and Duration

Question: does a Mahapurusha Yoga work throughout life, or for a certain period, such as the age of the planet?

• Strong yogas such as some Raj Yogas and the Mahapurusha Yogas do not give results in one small period. They give results over the entire life.
• They do not start at birth. Nobody is a Maha Purusha when born.
• A trigger is needed: a dasha, an antardasha, a transit, or a combination of these.
• Once triggered it is lifelong.
• If there is a big affliction to the yoga, the whole thing may suddenly fall.

"Once you become a Maha Purusha, you will remain a Maha Purusha unless you go to jail or something."
