BPHS Ch.15 Verse 8–9 — Profit from Cattle, 3rd/8th from Any House as Vitality/Vulnerability & Bādhaka Sthāna
Verse 8: Sun in the 4th, Moon and Saturn in the 9th and Mars in the 11th give gains from cows and buffaloes. The Sun shows living beings held as property, Saturn in the 9th makes the hard work of lowly creatures the native's fortune, and the 6th and 8th (one’s own hard work) are not involved. Verse 9 on dumbness can be read three ways; the teacher takes the 4th in a movable sign, the 4th lord in the 6th and Mars in the 12th, departing from Santhanam on two points. The 4th matters for speech because it is the 3rd from the 2nd: the 3rd from any house is its vitality and the 8th from any house its longevity and vulnerability, and a movable sign there makes the vitality shaky. Such a secondary factor is a modifier, never the determinant. The page ends with bādhaka sthāna (heard as "Bhadra sthana" on the recording): the 9th from a fixed sign, the 11th from a movable sign, the 7th from a dual sign.
Key principle
If the 3rd house from any entity is afflicted, that particular entity may not have enough vitality in it. For speech, 4th house is not a primary factor, it is a secondary factor. This is a modifier, this is not the actual determinant.
Verses 8–9 — Cattle, Speech, and the 3rd and 8th from Any House
Verse 8: Sun in the 4th + Moon and Saturn in the 9th + Mars in the 11th → Gains from Cattle
"Sukhe raviyute, manda chandre bhagyagate sati, labhasthana gate bhaume, go mahishyadi labhakrit"
- Sukhe raviyute = the Sun (Ravi) in the 4th house
- Manda chandre bhagyagate = Saturn and the Moon in the 9th (bhagya)
- Labhasthana gate bhaume = Mars (Bhauma, son of the earth) in the 11th (labha)
- → Go = cow, mahishi = buffalo, adi = and so on, labha = gains
Cattle are a 4th-house matter. Vehicles in the old days were elephants and horses; this verse covers animals held as property, for milk, ghee and butter.
The logic
- The 4th is what you own. The Sun shows all kinds of animals, all jivas. Sun in the 4th = animals as property.
- The 9th is fortune. Saturn there = fortune of a Saturn kind, through lowly, hardworking entities: servants, or cows, buffaloes and bulls.
- The 11th is gains.
- The key planets are the malefics: Sun, Mars, Saturn. When they show property and profit, it can be cattle and other animals.
Does Saturn mean the native works hard? Not necessarily.
"They are hardworking, just like hardworking servants. But as far as you are concerned, they are in your 9th house, fortune. So their hard work is your fortune. You make a fortune out of their hard work."
If the 6th were involved, the native himself would be serving. The 6th and 8th, which show one's own hard work, are not in the combination. Only the 4th (property), 9th (fortune) and 11th (gains) are.
How to remember the combinations: tie each placement to its reasoning. 9th = fortune, 11th = gains, Sun in the 4th = living beings as property.
Verse 9: 4th in a Movable Sign, 4th Lord in the 6th, Mars in the 12th → Dumbness
"Chara geha samayukte sukhe, tad rashi nayake, shashthe vyaye sthite bhaume, narah prapnoti mukatam"
- Chara geha = movable sign: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The 4th is movable only when the lagna is movable.
- Tad rashi nayaka = the leader of that sign, its lord.
- Mukata = dumbness, being unable to speak. (Kannada mooka, Telugu muga.)
The verse can be read three ways:
| Reading | 4th house | 4th lord | Mars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santhanam | Movable sign | With Mars in the 6th or 8th | With the 4th lord in the 6th or 8th |
| Second | Movable sign | Also in a movable sign (so in a quadrant) | In the 6th or 8th |
| The teacher's | Movable sign | In the 6th, a dusthana | In the 12th |
- It is not obvious from the verse which is right. All are tenable. The teacher says he is not fully sure.
- His reasons: Mars in the 6th is a blessing, so a bad result from it makes little sense. And vyaya is plainly the 12th; where Santhanam's "8th" comes from is unclear.
- Two departures from Santhanam: 12th in place of 8th; and the 4th lord in the 6th with Mars in the 12th, not the two together.
- He asks the class to test it on the chart of a dumb person.
Why Mars? Mercury is the karaka of speech, not Mars. But Mars is the fire behind speech. Fluent speech needs Martian strength. A badly placed Mars hurts the ability to speak fluently.
Why the 4th House for Speech — the 3rd and 8th from Any House
The house of speech is the 2nd. The 4th is the 3rd from the 2nd.
"3rd house is vitality and 8th house is longevity. So 3rd and 8th are always important. So if the 3rd house from any entity is afflicted, basically that particular entity may not have enough vitality in it."
- The 3rd is not only initiative. It is the house of vitality in anything.
- The 3rd and the 8th sustain anything.
- 4th = 3rd from the 2nd = vitality of speech.
- 9th = 8th from the 2nd = longevity and vulnerability of speech.
The same test from the 9th: 9th house a movable sign holding Saturn, 9th lord in the 8th afflicted by malefics, Mars in the 12th → a speech problem is still possible, because the 9th is the 8th from the 2nd.
Movable, fixed, dual
- Movable signs are unstable. They have a lot of energy, but it is not focused.
- Fixed signs are focused. Dual signs are in between.
- The 3rd from any house in a movable sign → the vitality of that house is shaky.
- The 3rd from any house in a fixed sign → solidity.
A Secondary Factor Is a Modifier
- 2nd lord in a trine, Mercury exalted and in mutual trine with him, the 2nd lord (say Saturn) exalted, Jupiter in the 2nd. Will that person be dumb? Definitely not.
- Take the verse with a pinch of salt. It is one combination.
"For speech, 4th house is not a primary factor, it is a secondary factor. This is a modifier, this is not the actual determinant."
- The actual determinant is the 2nd house. Give it its importance.
- Parallel from longevity: 3rd lord in the 2nd (12th from the 3rd) afflicted, or 8th lord in the 7th, are bad for vitality and longevity and are marakas. With a strong lagna you still do not hurry to predict death, and the result comes only in that planet's dasha.
- So too here: the speech problem shows in the dasha of the planet concerned. If that dasha runs at the start of life, the child may be slow to speak, there is worry for a long time, and later things are fine.
Bādhaka Sthāna — Definition
The recording's "Bhadra sthana" / "Bharatka sthana" is bādhaka sthāna, the house of obstruction. It is defined during the chart analysis:
| Lagna (or reference sign) | Bādhaka sthāna |
|---|---|
| Fixed sign | 9th house from it |
| Movable sign | 11th house from it |
| Dual sign | 7th house from it |
- It can be counted from an arudha too. In the example, Jupiter in the 9th from A4 (Leo, fixed) is in the bādhaka sthāna from A4.
- Planets associated with the 8th house or the bādhaka sthāna show disturbances and changes.
- Antardasha lord in the bādhaka sthāna of D-10 → a change of job is possible.
