BPHS Ch.16 Verses 13–17 — Child of Questionable Parentage, Raising Others' Children, Fortune Through Children & Ill-Behaved Child

BPHS — Panchamabhava Phaladhyaya (Verses 13–17)

Verse 13: 5th Lord with Moon or in "That" Drekkana → A Daughter

• The 5th lord is with Moon, or he is in "that drekkana" (tad-drekkana).
• The verse does not say plainly which drekkana. PVNR reads it as Moon's own drekkana: the 5th lord occupying Cancer in the Drekkana chart. He does not read it as "the drekkana occupied by Moon".
• Result: kanyakotpatti — a girl is born.

A student asked why D-3 is used here at all. PVNR had no answer: Parasara himself assigns siblings to the Drekkana and children to the Saptamsa, so a daughter should be judged from D-7.

"It has to be from Saptamsa rather than Drekkana. That is why I am actually suspicious of this verse. There could be one or two verses here and there which were added by somebody."

• The 5th lord in a Cancer drekkana is not enough by itself to give a daughter. Take the verse with a pinch of salt.

Verse 14: 5th Lord in a Movable Sign, Rahu with "Vidhu", Saturn in the 5th → A Child Born to Someone Else

The verse: sutese chara-rasi-sthe, rahuna sahite vidhau, putra-sthanam gate mande, para-jatam vadet sisum.

Conditions:

1. The 5th lord is in a movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). This part is unambiguous.
2. Rahuna sahite vidhau — "vidhu/vidhi is with Rahu".
3. Saturn is in the 5th house.

Two readings of the second condition

• Santhanam translates it as Rahu with Moon.
• PVNR doubts this. One meaning of vidhi is fate, destiny. Unless the dictionary confirms the word as a name of Moon, look for what shows fate: the lagna (root of one's fate) or the 9th house (bhagya). The topic is children, where the 5th and 9th matter more than lagna. His guess: Rahu in the 9th house, aspecting the 5th.

Result: para-jatam sisum — Santhanam says "a child of questionable birth". Literally: the child the person gets is born to someone else. It can be:

• an adoption (dattaputra yoga);
• a child of the spouse by another person;
• raising a co-wife's child, or a stepmother raising the child of a wife who died.

Which condition carries the weight

• The 5th lord in a movable sign shows some change or transition about children. It is a very minor condition and nowhere near sufficient.
• The major conditions are the influence of Saturn and Rahu on the 5th house.
• The chart can be the husband's or the wife's. In an adoption it does not matter which.

A student's question: does Saturn here mean adultery?

• A student took verse 14 as an affair and verse 15 as plain adoption, "because only with Saturn comes the adultery".
• PVNR: not necessarily. This is the 5th house, not the 7th. Saturn is not only the planet of adultery. He is the planet of depletion — lean, drying, denying. In the 5th he can simply deny a child, so that one has to take someone else's. Saturn is also an important karaka for adoption and for raising another's child.
• Adultery is one possibility in both verses, not the only one. The two verses need not describe different things: in one Saturn afflicts the 5th house, in the other the karaka Jupiter is in marana karaka sthana and afflicted — and Saturn or Rahu can be among the afflicting malefics.

Why only children?

• A student asked why every verse is about children. PVNR: Parasara gives only some important matters of each house, as in earlier chapters. People come about children for the 5th and about marriage for the 7th.
• Use these verses as a base for the other matters of the house. Fame and following are also the 5th and resemble children: followers and fans follow you and learn from you as children do.

Verse 15: Moon in the 8th, Jupiter in the 8th from Moon, Afflicted by Malefics → Raising Another's Child

The verse: lagnad ashtamage chandre, chandrad ashtamage gurau, papagrahair yute drishte, para-jato na samsayah.

Conditions — all three together ("it is 'and', it is not 'or'"):

1. Moon in the 8th house from lagna.
2. Jupiter in the 8th from Moon, that is, in the 3rd house.
3. Jupiter conjoined or aspected by malefics.

• Both planets are then in marana karaka sthana: Moon in the 8th, Jupiter in the 3rd.
• Yute drishte is in the singular, so the affliction is of one planet only. Jupiter was named last, so it applies to Jupiter. A student added that Jupiter is the putra karaka, which makes this reading the logical one. PVNR agreed.
• The malefics are functional malefics: the verse says papa, not krura.

"Irrespective of where Moon is, if Jupiter is in the 3rd house afflicted by malefics, that itself is a bad indication as far as children are concerned."

Result: para-jata — the native cannot beget children and has to raise somebody else's.

Verse 16: 5th Lord Exalted, or in Lagna / 2nd / 5th / 9th, with Jupiter → Fortunate in Children

The verse: putra-sthanadhipe svocche, lagnad va dvi-trikonage, guruna samyute drishte, putra-bhagyam upaiti sah.

• The 5th lord is exalted, or (va) he is in the lagna, the 2nd, the 5th or the 9th house. Dvi-trikona is "the 2nd or the trines", not the trines alone. Both may hold; one is enough.
• And he is conjoined or aspected by Jupiter.

Result: putra-bhagya — the native is fortunate in respect of children.

• After two bad combinations Parasara gives a good one.
• An exalted 5th lord is not rare. The only extra condition is Jupiter's conjunction or aspect, so this yoga does turn up in charts.

Verse 17: Three or Four Malefics in the 5th, No Benefic, 5th Lord Debilitated → A Child of Bad Character

Conditions:

1. Three or four functional malefics occupy the 5th house.
2. No natural benefic is in the 5th with them.
3. The 5th lord is debilitated.

A correction to the printed text

• The printed words read as though a benefic is present, which cannot go with a bad result. PVNR takes it as a misprint for saumya-vivarjite — "devoid of benefics". A second misprint sits in the word for the result.

What "no benefic" implies

• The house must hold "just a gang of bad guys". If one of the three or four functional malefics is a natural benefic, the yoga does not form. So all of them must be natural malefics as well as functional malefics.
• Example: Virgo lagna with Saturn, Rahu and Mars in the 5th (Capricorn). Mars is 3rd and 8th lord — malefic. Saturn is 5th and 6th lord — between neutral and malefic. Rahu is 6th lord — malefic. The yoga's first condition is met even though Mars is exalted there; the verse is not about exaltation or debility of the occupants.

Result: the child has bad character and keeps bad company. He is ill-behaved and the parents suffer.

"If there are malefics afflicting the 5th house, it could either be not getting a child, having to adopt, etc. On the other hand, it could also be having a child who is problematic."
