BPHS Ch.16 Verses 13–17 — Child of Questionable Parentage, Raising Others' Children, Fortune Through Children & Ill-Behaved Child
Verse 13 (possibly spurious): 5th lord with Moon or in Cancer drekkana = daughter. PVNR caution: unexpected use of Drekkana where D7 is expected — may be scribal error. Verse 14: 5th lord in mobile sign + Rahu in 9H + Saturn in 5H = child of questionable parentage or adopted (child doesn't truly "originate" from the native). Verse 15: Moon in 8H + Jupiter in 3H + both afflicted by functional malefics = native raises someone else's children. Logic: Moon in 8H obscures birth origins; Jupiter (karaka of children) in 3H (away from 5H) = weakened for children; functional malefics distort 5th house signification. Verse 16: 5th lord in trikona/lagna/exalted + Jupiter aspects = fortune and fame through children (children as a medium of blessings). Verse 17: 3-4 functional malefics in 5H + NO natural benefics + 5th lord debilitated = ill-behaved child who torments parents (tapana). Triple affliction required: house + lord + no rescue. Even one strong natural benefic aspecting 5H can cancel this.
"Even one natural benefic aspecting the 5th house rescues the combination. You need the house afflicted, the lord debilitated, AND no protective benefic — all three before predicting an ill-behaved child."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS — Panchamabhava Phaladhyayam (Continued)
Verse 13: 5th Lord with Moon or in Cancer Drekkana → Daughter
- 5th lord is with Moon, OR the 5th lord is in a Cancer drekkana (Cancer drekkanas: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
→ A daughter (kanya suta) rather than a son
PVNR's caution: This verse is potentially spurious or misread. When Parashara says "drekkana" in a 5th house context, one would expect the Saptamsa (D7) to be the relevant divisional chart (D7 = chart for children). Using Drekkana (D3) for children is unexpected. May be a scribal error or mistranslation. The Moon association part is plausible (Moon = feminine signification), but the Drekkana aspect is suspect.
Verse 14: 5th Lord in Mobile Sign + Rahu in 9H + Saturn in 5H → Questionable/Adopted Child
Conditions:
- 5th lord is in a mobile sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
- Rahu in the 9th house
- Saturn in the 5th house
→ Child who actually "belongs to someone else" — either adopted, or born of questionable parentage (the child is not really the native's own biological child)
Why these planets?
- Rahu in 9H = something hidden/irregular about fortune/dharma (9th house = dharma and past merit)
- Saturn in 5H = depriving influence on children
- Mobile sign for 5th lord = instability/lack of rootedness in the 5th house matter
- Combined: the child that appears to belong to the native doesn't truly "originate" from them
Verse 15: Moon in 8H + Jupiter in 3H Afflicted by Functional Malefics → Raised Someone Else's Children
Conditions:
- Moon in the 8th house
- Jupiter in the 3rd house AND both afflicted by functional malefics
→ The native raises children born to someone else (para putra palanam = nurturing another's children)
Logic:
- Moon in 8H = hidden/occult matters; obscures clarity about birth/origin
- Jupiter in 3H = Jupiter (karaka of children) in the 3rd house (away from 5th house, weakened for 5th house matters)
- Functional malefics afflicting both = further distortion of the 5th house signification
- Result: The native takes on a parenting role for children not biologically theirs
Verse 16: 5th Lord in Trikona Houses/Lagna OR Exalted + Jupiter Aspecting → Fortune from Children
— PVNR"Sute she trikonasthe, lagnasthe swotcharasige, jiva drushte putrabhyascha yashopi sulabho bhavet"
Conditions (any):
- 5th lord in trikona (1H, 5H, 9H) OR in lagna
- OR 5th lord exalted
- PLUS Jupiter aspects the 5th lord or 5th house
→ Yasha (fame/fortune) through children; good fortune comes through them; children are the medium through which the native receives blessings
Key insight: The combination of 5th lord strength + Jupiter's karaka aspect = children become a source of fortune, not just happiness.
Verse 17: 3–4 Functional Malefics in 5H + No Natural Benefics + 5th Lord Debilitated → Ill-Behaved Child
Conditions:
- 3 or 4 functional malefics occupy the 5th house
- No natural benefics in or aspecting the 5th house (no protection)
- 5th lord is debilitated (completely weak)
→ Child who gives tapana (suffering/burning) to the parents — ill-behaved, disrespectful, causing grief
— PVNR"The child is so ill-behaved that parents are completely tormented by him."
Analytical note: This requires a triple affliction — the house, the lord, and absence of protective benefics all simultaneously negative. Even one strong natural benefic aspecting the 5th house can rescue this combination.
