BPHS Ch.34 Yogakarakas: Kendra Lords=Neutral (Benefics Don't Help/Malefics Don't Harm); Trikona Lords=Always Benefic (Lagna=Trikona Primarily); 3/6/11=Struggle/Challenge; 2/8/12=Depends on Company; Sun/Moon 8L Exception=Tapasya; Planets as Inner Qualities: Sun=Soul, Moon=Mind, Jupiter=Conscience/Viveka, Venus=Greatest Tapasvi

Ch.34 shifts from Karkamsa to bhavadhipatya (house ownership) functional nature. Kendra lords (1,4,7,10): natural benefics owning kendras → do NOT give auspicious results; natural malefics owning kendras → do NOT give inauspicious results. "Kendra ownership = neutral; foundation structures do their function but don't themselves bless or curse." Lagna exception: "Lagnam kendra trikona apavada — lagna is BOTH kendra and trikona; count it as trikona primarily; kendra quality adds extra power." Trikona lords (1,5,9): all give auspicious results regardless of natural nature — "even Saturn, Mars, Rahu owning trikonas give good results; trikona lords carry Poorvapunya and dharma." 5th+9th = Vishyasadhanam (special wealth): "5th = abilities you bring = a currency; 9th = dharmic goodwill = another currency; not bank notes but resources that function as wealth." 3/6/11 lords (Trishadaya): always malefic regardless — "houses of active pursuit; their lords guarantee struggle and challenges; like coaches who force you to work hard." 2/8/12 lords: depends on company (sahachara) and other house owned; 8th lord base = inauspicious ("8th is 12th from 9th = takes away from fortune"); EXCEPTION: Sun and Moon owning 8th = perfectly fine ("their purpose is tapasya; owning the house of hard work aligns with soul + mind's mission"). Stronger yoga overrides weaker ("Baliyogo nirbalasya pravahadakah"). Planets as inner qualities: Sun=soul/Atman; Moon=mind/perception window; Mars=initiative/energy; Mercury=learning/adaptation; Jupiter=conscience/Viveka/discrimination; Venus=spirit of happiness (keeps inner demons contented); Saturn=discipline/perseverance; Rahu=boundary-breaker (experiencing God, not just theorizing); Ketu=detachment/moksha. Venus insight: "Vishnu says in Bhagavad Gita 'Among rishis I am Shukra.' Not Jupiter. Venus is the greatest tapasvi — teaching demons is harder than teaching gods."

"Don't look at planets as some round ball moving in the sky. The actual planets are personifications of qualities within you. Jupiter is your conscience — your ability to discriminate right from wrong, your Viveka. Venus is the spirit of happiness in you that keeps the demons inside under check so they don't ruin life. Shukracharya teaches the demons. That is a more difficult job than teaching the gods. Venus is probably the greatest tapasvi of all."

BPHS Ch.34 — Yogakarakas: Functional Nature by House Ownership

Chapter transition: Ch.33 was Karakamsa (from the Atmakaraka). Ch.34 now shifts to "Yogakarakas" — what results do planets give based on which houses they own from the Rasi Lagna?

PVNR intro: "He is saying, O Brahmin, I have explained results from the Karakamsa. Now I will tell you results based on the house ownership (bhavadhipatya) of planets."

Verse 1: Kendra Lords — Neutral

Sanskrit fragment: "Kendra adhipati saumya na dīśyanti śubham phalam. Krūra naiva aśubham kuryuhu."

Rule: Lords of Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10):

  • Natural benefics owning Kendras → do NOT give auspicious results (don't give shubha phala)
  • Natural malefics owning Kendras → do NOT give inauspicious results (don't give papa phala)
  • Result: Kendra ownership makes a planet neutral — neither benefic nor malefic regardless of natural nature

Why:

  • Kendras are foundational structures (foundation = solid, stable, neither lucky nor unlucky by themselves)
  • Owning a Kendra is like owning infrastructure: it does its function but doesn't itself bless or curse

"Basically, whether it is Jupiter or Mars owning a kendra, he is neutral — neither auspicious nor inauspicious. That is Parasara's directive."

— PVNR

Verse 2: Trikona Lords — Always Benefic

Sanskrit: "Subhadra aste trikona pahaha. Shivadahasya" (trikona lords, whoever they are, give good/auspicious results)

Rule: Lords of Trikona houses (1, 5, 9):

  • All trikona lords give good results, regardless of natural nature
  • Even Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu — if they own trikonas, they give auspicious results

Why:

  • 5th house = Poorvapunya (meritorious deeds from past lives) → those things come to you easily
  • 9th house = Dharma you follow → dharma always protects you
  • Trikona lords are blessings; their agenda is to give you what you deserve from past goodness

Lagna (1st house) — special:

  • "Lagnam kendra trikona apavada visheshena subhakshatam" = Lagna is both Kendra AND Trikona → counted as trikona primarily, and its kendra nature makes it even more powerful
  • Don't count lagna as kendra; count it as trikona; the kendra quality adds extra power

5th and 9th as "special wealth" (Vishyasadhanam):

  • "Panchamam naumam chaiva vishayasadhanam uchataye"
  • 5th = abilities (the skills and talents you bring = a currency you can spend)
  • 9th = dharma (goodwill, righteousness = another currency that works in the world)
  • These are "special wealth" = not bank notes, but resources that function as wealth

7th and 10th as "special happiness" (Visheshka/Visheshasukha):

  • Kendras 4, 7, 10: 4th = basic direction/sukha; 7th = interactions with the world; 10th = the work you do
  • 7th and 10th give a special kind of happiness — the sense of purpose and direction that comes from engaging with the world

Verse 3: 3rd, 6th, 11th Lords — Malefic (Challenging)

Sanskrit: "Trishadaya Adhipaha Sarve Graha Papa Phalasprutaha"

  • Tri = 3, Shad = 6, Aya = 11
  • Lords of 3rd, 6th, and 11th houses → all are malefic regardless of natural nature

Why these are "malefic":

  • These are houses of active pursuit and struggle — they require you to DO something to get results
  • 3rd = initiative, drive, Vikrama Sthana → the seed of desire (Kama Trikona 1st leg)
  • 6th = fighting obstacles, enemies → you must struggle to win
  • 11th = fulfillment of desires → gains require effort to obtain
  • "These planets are not necessarily bad for you. What it means is they give you challenges, they make you actively pursue something in life."
  • Lords of 3, 6, 11 are like coaches who force you to work hard — the challenge may or may not be won, but the struggle is guaranteed

Kama Trikonas (3, 7, 11): 3rd = seed of desire, 7th = desire itself, 11th = fulfillment. They are the Kama Trikona. All require actively pursuing things.

Verse 4: 2nd, 8th, 12th Lords — Depends on Company

Sanskrit: "Sahajariyatharapradaha" — based on sahachara (company they are in)

Rule: Lords of 2nd, 8th, and 12th houses give results based on:

  1. Who they associate with (sahachara — which planets they join)
  2. Which other house they own (their dual rulership)

2nd lord: Neutral base; other house owned decides auspicious/inauspicious 12th lord: Neutral; determined by company and other house 8th lord: Particularly inauspicious — because 8th is the 12th house from 9th (= takes away from bhagya/fortune)

  • "Na she bhakta vahan" = 8th lord is not auspicious as a base tendency

One exception — Sun and Moon:

  • "Atra na randhe satva dosha ha" = For Sun and Moon, the 8th house ownership dosha does NOT apply
  • Why? Sun = soul; Moon = mind. Both are here to do tapascharya, to make the body work hard. Ownership of the 8th house of hard work/tapas is NOT a problem for soul and mind — it is actually their job.
  • "Soul and mind have come back to this body to do tapasya, to work hard so that runas are cut off and they can become free. For that purpose, 8th house ownership is fine."
  • Saturn owning 8th: "spirit of hard work owning the house of hard work" — hard work itself has to work hard → not ideal

Strong yoga overrides weak yoga:

  • "Baliyogo nirbalasya pravahadakah" = the stronger yoga blocks the weaker one
  • If a planet owns both 5th and 6th, and is with the 9th lord → 5th house strengthened; 6th house malefic nature reduced
  • Whichever planetary company creates a stronger yoga will dominate

Extended Teaching: Planets as Personifications of Inner Qualities

"Don't look at planets as some round ball moving in the sky. The actual planets are personifications of qualities within you."

— PVNR
PlanetInner Quality Personified
SunSoul (Atman) — the consciousness within
MoonMind — how you perceive the world, your window to reality
MarsInitiative, energy, drive — the spirit of getting things done
MercuryLearning ability — how you understand, adapt, appreciate
JupiterChit Shakti — intelligence, discrimination (Viveka), conscience (right vs. wrong)
VenusSpirit of happiness/enjoyment — keeps the "demons" (lower instincts) contented and manageable
SaturnSpirit of discipline, patience, hard work, perseverance
RahuSpirit of breaking boundaries — reaching unknown frontiers, unconventional
KetuSpirit of detachment, moksha — "I don't need anything anymore"

Venus deep insight:

"Vishnu says in Bhagavad Gita, 'Among all rishis I am Venus (Shukra).' Not Jupiter. Venus is probably the greatest tapasvi. He is Shukracharya. The spirit of happiness in us keeps the demons inside us under check so that they don't ruin life. Teaching demons is a more difficult job than teaching gods."

— PVNR

Rahu-Ketu and spirituality:

"When Rahu and Ketu influence spirituality houses, they make you EXPERIENCE God, not just theorize. Experiencing God is like breaking a barrier — Rahu breaks barriers, Ketu enables detachment. That is why Parashara mentions Ketu for moksha."

— PVNR
