BPHS Ch.34 v8-18: Natural Benefics Venus>Jupiter>Mercury>Moon; Malefics Mars>Saturn>Sun>Waning Moon; Kendrajatva Dosha (Benefics Fall by Owning Kendra); Raj Yoga Formation: Exchange>Together in Own House>Conjunction>Mutual Aspect; Raj Yoga Cancelled if 3/6/11 Owned; Rahu/Ketu = House Owners: Judge by Occupancy+Association Not Scorpio/Aquarius
Natural benefic hierarchy (strongest to least): Venus > Jupiter > Mercury > Full Moon. Natural malefic hierarchy (most to least malefic): Mars > Saturn > Sun > Waning Moon. "Mars is the worst malefic planet in terms of inherent nature." Kendrajatva Dosha: natural benefics who own Kendras (1,4,7,10) lose their benefic quality; fall proportional to strength — Venus suffers most, Moon least. "Trikonas = Lakshmi sthanas that give blessings freely; Kendras = Vishnu sthanas = doing, not giving freely or harshly; hence neutral." Raj Yoga formation (Kendra lord + Trikona lord connection): (1) Exchange/Parivartana = most powerful; (2) Together in one of their own houses; (3) Together in a 3rd sign; (4) Full mutual aspect; (5) Partial aspect = weakest but still counts. "Quality depends on how strongly connected; exchange in own house = most powerful." Yogakaraka planet: owns both Kendra+Trikona, OR Kendra lord in Trikona house, OR Trikona lord in Kendra house. Raj Yoga cancellation: if either planet also owns 3rd/6th/11th (Trishadaya), yoga is cancelled. "6th cancels trine (bad cancels good = net neutral); but Kendra + trine = still good (neutral + good = good)." Rahu/Ketu rules: judge by house occupied + planets they associate with; forget Aquarius/Scorpio ownership for functional classification. "Rahu and Ketu are like self-declared owners of wherever they are." Rahu/Ketu as Yogakaraka: if in Kendra or Trikona AND associated with lord of the other type → Yogakaraka. "Even if actual 10th lord is weak, Rahu in 10th with 9th lord association can give good career in Rahu dasha — the planet in the house has its own agency."
"When the lord of a Kendra and the lord of a Trikona have a meaningful connection, that is Raj Yoga. The most powerful form is exchange — each sitting in the other's house. The least powerful is a partial aspect, but even that counts. And if either planet also owns the 6th house? The 6th cancels the trikona blessing entirely. The 6th is the house of enemies and struggle — it does not allow the grace of the trikona to pass through."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Ch.34 — Verse 8: Natural Hierarchy of Planets (Benefic to Malefic)
Sanskrit: "Bhūrukrā suhāvo, chandrao madhyam, budhāsi ro papā ravi-arki bhūmidāha"
Natural benefic hierarchy (strongest to least):
- Venus — most naturally benefic of all planets
- Jupiter — next
- Mercury — "not even medium; extremely moderate; slightly below medium"
- Full Moon (Waxing) — least benefic; can be Somya
Natural malefic hierarchy (least malefic to most malefic):
- Waning Moon — least malefic
- Sun
- Saturn
- Mars — most naturally malefic of all planets
Order within malefics: "Waning Moon < Sun < Saturn < Mars in terms of malefic intensity"
— PVNR"Mars is the worst malefic planet in terms of inherent nature."
BPHS Ch.34 — Verse 9: Kendrajatva Dosha (Benefics Weakened by Kendra Ownership)
Rule: Natural benefics who own Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) lose their benefic quality. The fall in benefic ability is proportional to the planet's natural benefic strength:
- Most severe loss: Venus (strongest benefic → biggest fall)
- Next: Jupiter
- Next: Mercury
- Least: Moon
Practical meaning: Owning a Kendra makes a natural benefic neutral — not a bad thing, but no longer a naturally auspicious doer. This is called Kendradhipatya Dosha or Kendrajatva Dosha.
Summary recap (from Ch.34 summary):
| House Group | Effect |
|---|---|
| Trikona (1,5,9) | Always benefic regardless of planet (blessings from past life) |
| Kendra (1,4,7,10) | Neutral for all (Vishnu sthanas — doing, not giving freely or harshly) |
| 3,6,11 | Always malefic/challenging (houses of active struggle and desire) |
| 2,8,12 | Determined by sahachara (company) and other house owned |
Why Kendras are neutral: "Trikonas are Lakshmi sthanas — they give blessings freely. Kendras are Vishnu sthanas — they involve doing things, but not necessarily giving easily or harshly. Hence neutral."
BPHS Ch.34 — Verses 10–13: Raj Yoga Formation
Definition: When a Kendra lord and a Trikona lord have a meaningful connection.
Levels of connection (strongest to weakest):
- Exchange of houses (Parivartana yoga) — one is in the other's sign
- Together in one of their own houses — one or both in the house they own
- Together in another sign — conjunction in a 3rd sign
- Full mutual aspect — both aspecting each other closely
- Partial aspect — even partial aspect counts, but gives weaker results
Result: "Bhuupo vikhyatova dhanovahet" — native becomes a king or becomes particularly famous and wealthy.
— PVNR"The quality of the Raj Yoga depends on where and how strongly they are connected. Exchange in own house = most powerful; partial aspect = least powerful but still counts."
BPHS Ch.34 — Verses 13–14: Yogakaraka Planet Definition
Standard definition (PVNR extension of Parashara): A planet is Yogakaraka when it simultaneously touches BOTH Kendra AND Kona:
- Owns both Kendra and Trikona (e.g., Saturn for Taurus lagna = 9th+10th lord, or for Capricorn lagna = 1st+10th)
- Kendra lord placed in a Trikona house — lord of 4th/7th/10th placed in 1st/5th/9th
- Trikona lord placed in a Kendra house — lord of 5th/9th placed in 1st/4th/7th/10th
— PVNR"Parashara's definition is more generic than other texts. It's not just ruling both Kendra and Kona — it's any meaningful association (ownership, occupancy) of both types simultaneously."
BPHS Ch.34 — Verse 15: Raj Yoga Cancellation (Malefic House Ownership)
Rule: If either the Kendra lord or the Trikona lord ALSO owns a malefic house (3, 6, 11), the Raj Yoga is cancelled/greatly reduced.
Example (Virgo lagna):
- Saturn (5th+6th lord) + Jupiter (4th+7th lord) together → NO Raj Yoga because Saturn also owns 6th
- Mercury (1st+10th lord) + Venus (2nd+9th lord) → VALID Raj Yoga; neither owns 3/6/11
— PVNR"The 6th house cancels the trine. Kendra doesn't cancel trine (kendra neutral + trine good = still good). But 3/6/11 + trine = cancelled."
BPHS Ch.34 — Verses 16–18: Rahu and Ketu as Yogakaraka
Rahu/Ketu nature (Tamo-grahas):
- Not true planets (don't reflect light; shadow planets)
- "Tamasic planets — darkness, not light"
How to judge Rahu/Ketu as benefic or malefic:
- House they occupy → they behave as the lord of that house
- Planets they associate with (conjunction or aspect) → absorb that planet's functional nature
- Forget Aquarius/Scorpio ownership for practical functional classification
PVNR example: His own chart (Virgo lagna):
- Rahu in 6th house with Moon (11th lord) → Rahu = functional malefic (6th house + 11th lord influence)
- Ketu in 12th house alone → Ketu = neutral (12th is neutral; no strong association)
Rahu/Ketu as Yogakaraka:
- If Rahu/Ketu is in a Kendra OR Trikona AND associated with the lord of the other type → becomes Yogakaraka
- Example: Rahu in 10th house + associates with 9th lord → Rahu gives Dharma-Karma Raj Yoga
— PVNR"Rahu and Ketu are like mafia people — self-declared owners of wherever they are. They behave as though they own that place. If in 4th house with a 5th lord's association, they give 4th-5th Raj Yoga, irrespective of what sign they occupy."
Key distinction: Even if the actual 10th lord is weak, Rahu in the 10th with a 9th lord association can still give good career results in Rahu dasha — the planet in the house has its own agency.
