The chart and the life

• Born 12 March 1947, 9:51 AM, Detroit, Michigan. Eastern Standard Time, 5 hours west of GMT. 83°02′45″ W, 42°19′53″ N.
• The data is rated A, and the events fit. (PVNR sets Obama's chart aside as not certain, and Gingrich's as unreliable.)
• The class is held in January 2012, the day before the New Hampshire primary. Romney is the Republican frontrunner.
• Born into a rich family; his father was a successful politician in Michigan. Studied law and business.
• 1978: joined the consulting firm Bain & Co. 1984: started its offshoot, the venture capital firm Bain Capital, and made a huge fortune buying and selling companies.
• 1991: returned to the struggling Bain & Co. Some years of challenges, ending in great success.
• 1994: lost a Senate election to Ted Kennedy.
• November 2002: elected Governor of Massachusetts as a Republican in a heavily Democratic state.
• 7 February 2008: conceded the Republican presidential nomination.

The D-10 as read in class

Dasamsa lagna: Pisces.

The site's chart differs. The teacher's software used a different planetary model in these late classes. The chart drawn on this page agrees on the Pisces lagna, Sun, Moon, Mars, Saturn and Venus, but puts Jupiter in Leo (6th), Rahu in Taurus (3rd) and Ketu in Scorpio (9th). Jupiter in the 7th, Ketu in the 10th and Rahu with Mars in the 4th are the class's placements, and the notes below follow the class. (A student who got Jupiter in Cancer was told to recheck his data: "Jupiter is in Virgo in the dasamsa.")

Service or business?

• Jupiter is lagna lord and 10th lord, and he is in the 7th house. That shows a businessman.
• The 10th house holds Ketu. Ketu is a 9th lord (co-lord of Scorpio). 9th lord in the 10th is a very good placement.
• Saturn, Mars and Rahu aspect the 10th from the 4th (7th aspect; the signs also have rāśi dṛṣṭi). Saturn is a functional malefic. But Mars is the other 9th lord: he aspects the 10th house and, by his 4th aspect, the 10th lord Jupiter.
• So both 9th lords are tied to the 10th house and its lord. This shows success.
• Jupiter is in Īśāna's dasamsa. Ketu and Mars, the 9th lords acting on the 10th, are in Varuṇa's dasamsa: trading and business.

From the Sun and the Moon

• From Sun (Scorpio): the 10th lord Sun is in lagna in a friendly sign. The 10th (Leo) contains the 9th lord Moon. Again 9th lord in the 10th.
• From Moon (Leo): the lagna lord Sun is in the 4th, a quadrant, aspecting the 10th. The 10th lord Venus is in the 7th, a quadrant, aspecting the lagna. The yogakāraka Mars, the 9th lord, aspects the 5th house.
• From all three references the 9th lord is tied to the 10th or the 5th. A fortunate career.

Romney — The Dasas Read from Lagna, Moon and Sun

The dasa dates are the teacher's (Vimshottari as set in his software). Each dasa lord is judged in the D-10 from lagna, from Moon and from Sun.

Moon dasa (1974–1984)

• From Sun: 9th lord in the 10th. From lagna: 5th lord.
• 9th lord and 5th lord from two references: a dasa of success. He joined Bain & Co in 1978 and started his own firm in 1984, just before Mars dasa.

Mars dasa — the fortune

"It was just before Mars Dasha that he started his firm, and it was during Mars Dasha that he made his killing."

• In the 11th from Moon, aspecting the 11th from lagna and from Sun: a link with the 11th house from all three, and a benefic from all three. A period of great gain.

Uccha Dṛṣṭi — Aspect on the Sign of Exaltation

"If a planet is aspecting a sign where he would be exalted, that drishti is called uccha drishti. It's basically auspicious."

• In Romney's D-10 Mars is in Gemini. His 8th aspect falls on Capricorn, his sign of exaltation. Capricorn is the 11th from the Pisces lagna.
• So from lagna Mars is with the 11th lord and aspects the 11th house, "that too with uccha drishti".
• This is the only example given in the class. (The transcript spells it "Uchatrushi".)

Rahu dasa — mixed

• Rahu behaves like his company. He is at 5° Gemini, Mars at 3°, Saturn at 17°. Rahu is closer to Mars; Mars is a benefic here, so Rahu acts as a benefic in the 4th.
• From Moon: 7th lord in the 11th. From Sun: 4th lord in the 8th, which is not good. From lagna: 12th lord.
• A very close Mars–Rahu conjunction is not a great combination even so. Their natures do not agree, like Mars–Saturn.
• Rahu–Sun and Rahu–Moon do not go well.
• Result: some blessings, some negative combinations. He lost a bid for power twice in this dasa — the Senate race against Ted Kennedy in Rahu–Rahu, and the presidential nomination in Rahu–Sun. He won the governorship in Rahu–Venus.

Rahu–Venus — Governor of Massachusetts (November 2002)

The rule:

"A planet has to have a link with 5th house from all the references, or at least 2 of them, in order to give power. Otherwise the planet cannot give power."

• Venus aspects the 5th lord from all three references and is very well placed from the dasa lord. Venus antardasa of Rahu dasa can give political power.
• Being well placed from the dasa lord is not enough. It has to make sense from the tripod too, even if weakly.
• The count from Rahu uses the class's Rahu in Gemini. (The teacher first says "6th lord in the 9th" and then corrects it to 5th lord; from Gemini, Libra is the 5th.)
• Because the lagna lord is in the 7th, Dvisaptati Sama dasa applies to this chart. In that dasa it was Moon dasa that gave the power, and Moon is the 5th lord from lagna and the 9th lord from Sun.

Jupiter–Saturn — the period running in January 2012

• Jupiter: lagna lord aspecting lagna. Good for career, most of all in business and consulting. From lagna he has nothing to do with the 5th house. From Sun and from Moon he is the 5th lord. Two of three: he may or may not give power.
• Saturn: from Moon he is the 6th and 7th lord, a malefic, but he joins the yogakāraka and aspects the 5th house. From Sun he has his 10th aspect on the 5th house. From lagna he aspects the 5th lord Moon. From Jupiter he is the 5th lord in the 10th.
• A student asks whether Saturn's retrogression reduces the power. PVNR: retrograde planets are closer to the earth and show more material pursuits. He does not hold it against Saturn.
• This is one of the better antardasas of Jupiter dasa. There is a chance of power in the year.

Romney — Tajaka Annual Dasamsa, 2011-12 and 2012-13

2011-12: in the limelight

Annual D-10 lagna: Taurus.

• Lagna lord Venus and 5th lord Mercury are together in the 11th: a rājayoga, though not a powerful one because they are far apart.
• The Sun, kāraka of power, aspects the lagna and is in a trine from Venus and Mercury.
• Jupiter, the 8th lord, is in the 12th: Viparīta Rājayoga.
• The 10th lord Rahu is in the 10th.
• The year shows limelight, power and a good position.

The dasas within the year:

• Mercury (June–July 2011): he may have announced or come to be seen as a leader.
• Venus (August–October): he rose to clear frontrunner.
• Sun: kāraka of power aspecting lagna; he held his advantage. Moon: fine.
• Mars: a small setback. Mars is in the 4th, the 12th from the 5th house of following, and he is with Ketu (6° and 7°, close).
• Rahu (running, until 12 March 2012): from lagna the 10th lord in the 10th; from Moon the 8th lord in the 8th, aspecting the 10th lord; from Sun the 4th lord in the 4th, aspecting the 10th. A link with the 10th from all three. A very good period, and Super Tuesday (6 March) falls in it.

2012-13: limelight, then a fall

There is leeway in the birth time (3.5 minutes earlier, 4 minutes 43 seconds later), so this annual chart holds. The lordships he reads are those of an Aries lagna.

• The 5th lord Sun is with the 10th lord Saturn (11° and 7°, close). A rājayoga — but in the 8th house, and Sun and Saturn are not friends.
• The 10th house holds Mars and Mercury within 6°. Mars is lagna lord, Mercury is 6th lord: a duryoga. Mars is also 8th lord, and 6th and 8th lords together are good — in a duṣṭhāna, not in a quadrant.
• A negative combination in the 10th and another in the 8th. The year before had lagna lord and 5th lord together in the 11th, a clear combination for a powerful position. This year has no such thing.

"This seems like the chart of somebody who will be in the limelight but later have a fall."

• The election falls in the Mercury dasa of the year, which starts just before it. Mercury is a functional malefic afflicting the lagna lord in the 10th. From Sun also, the lagna lord Mars is afflicted by the 8th lord Mercury. Mercury is a bad planet from all three references. This dasa does not favour winning.

"So Romney is most likely going to be the nominee and he is most likely going to lose."

A student's question on the 6th lord

• Student: a weak 6th lord should mean the enemies are crushed.
• PVNR: true in general. But here the 6th lord afflicts the lagna lord. The lagna lord is the stronger — Mars is exalted and retrograde, Mercury only in a friendly sign. Still, an enemy who sits with you bothers you all the time, whoever wins in the end.

Romney — Sudarshana Chakra Dasha Year by Year

All in the D-10. Each year starts on his birthday, 12 March. The natal D-10 has lagna in Pisces, Moon in Leo, Sun in Scorpio; the dasha signs are counted from these.

2002-03 — Libra, Pisces, Gemini (elected Governor)

Dasha Pravesha Chakra: 12 March 2002, 3:24:17 PM.

• From Libra: the 5th house (Aquarius) is empty. Its lord Saturn is in Taurus with Mercury, the 9th lord. 5th and 9th lords together, both in an adhimitra (great friend's) sign. Saturn's 10th aspect falls on Aquarius: the 5th is aspected by its lord. The lagna lord Venus is exalted. 5th strong, lagna strong.
• A student objects that this happens in the 8th from Libra. PVNR: first see whether the 5th is strong from all three. If you bring in the 8th, judge the 8th from all three as well. It does not stand out: nothing from Gemini, and from Pisces the 8th lord is exalted.
• From Pisces: the 5th has no planets and no significant aspects; its lord Moon is in a quadrant, afflicted by Rahu. The 5th is not powerful. But the lagna contains an exalted planet.
• From Gemini: the lagna has Moon and Rahu and its lord is in the 12th in a friendly sign — ordinary. The 5th lord Venus is exalted.
• The 5th is strong from Libra and Gemini. The lagna is strong from Libra and Pisces.

"From 2 of the 3 references, lagna and 5th house are being activated. So there is a chance of power during the year."

2007-08 — Pisces, Leo, Scorpio (dropped out)

• From Pisces: nothing special about the 5th.
• From Leo: the 5th lord Jupiter aspects the 5th house.
• From Scorpio: nothing.
• One reference only. No other house stands out either.
• So there is not much power in the year. Even while he ran he was not popular and never the frontrunner. McCain took the nomination.

2011-12 — Cancer, Sagittarius, Pisces (the frontrunner)

• From Cancer: the lagna contains its lord. The 5th is aspected by its lord Mars and holds the Sun, kāraka of power, in a friendly sign. The 9th contains an exalted planet. All three trines are strong. The 8th lord is in the 8th, and the 11th lord is exalted.
• From Sagittarius: the lagna lord is in the 5th and the 5th lord Mars in the 9th, both in friendly signs. Good, but nobody is in own sign, exalted, or aspecting his own sign. The 6th and 11th lord Venus is exalted. The 8th lord is in the 8th.
• From Pisces: the lagna contains an exalted planet. The 5th lord is in the 5th. The 12th lord is in the 12th.
• Lagna is powerful from two references: a good, career-oriented year.
• The 5th is powerful from two (aspected by its lord from Cancer, holding its lord from Pisces) and good from the third.
• The 8th is strong from two: a lot of struggle and fight.
• A very good year.

2012-13 — Leo, Capricorn, Aries (from 12 March 2012)

• From Leo: the 5th contains Rahu, and Rahu in a sign of Jupiter is not powerful. The 5th lord Jupiter does not rescue it: only a three-quarter aspect, and from an inimical sign. The lagna lord is in an adhimitra sign but with his enemy the 6th lord, and the lagna holds a malefic Venus in an inimical sign. Neither the lagna nor the 5th is strong.
• From Capricorn: the 5th lord Venus is in the 8th, and the 5th is aspected by the 8th lord Sun.
• From Aries: the 5th lord Sun is in the 8th.
• A 5th–8th link from two references, the same pattern as when he dropped out in 2008. A year of setback in career, losing the bid for power again.

The prediction

• He will do well in the primaries and may well be the nominee. "Romney cannot win presidency in 2012 November. He will lose."
• If the primaries are not settled by Super Tuesday and drag on past 12 March into May or June, even the nomination can slip, because the new year has nothing that redeems the 5th house.
• So: either he clinches, or builds an unassailable lead, before 12 March, becomes the nominee and loses the election; or he is not the nominee at all.
