Chart Accuracy and Divisional Chart Sensitivity (Q1)

Mundane Charts

The question: for a country's chart, is there a gap between the announced moment and the true moment?

• A given chart may or may not be right. You must be able to verify it against events.
• Where a country consciously chose its moment (India, Iraq), the time is accurate.
• Where it did not (the USA), even the date is in question. There are 10–15 US charts by different scholars, with different times and different dates; July 4, 1776 is only one of them. Each must be rectified from events.
• PVNR's advice: mundane charts are more complicated. Stick to natal charts while learning.

A 9-Minute Window in a Natal Chart

A student's question: one person, born at 8:16 or at 8:25 — how big is the difference?

• With 10 minutes of uncertainty most planets do not change sign in Rasi, Navamsa or any division. At most Moon moves in some higher divisions.
• That does not mean the planets show the same thing, because the result depends on where the lagna is.
• The Rasi lagna is usually the same. The Navamsa lagna may have moved to the next sign. The Dasamsa lagna may have moved.

"If you want to look at the D-60 lagna, you know that it's either Gemini or Cancer or Leo or Virgo or Libra. So that's not helpful."

How to Resolve It

1. Start with the Rasi chart. See whether the Rasi lagna itself changes in the window — it may be on a border.
2. Identify the highest divisional chart where the lagna changes from one sign to another.
3. Go through both lagnas. See which one makes more sense from the events of the person's life, using the dashas.

Rasi Chart, Janma Rasi and the Two Popular References

A student took "Rasi chart" to mean "where the Moon is". PVNR's correction:

• The chart on the screen had Cancer lagna with Jupiter in Virgo. From Lagna Jupiter is in the 3rd house. From Moon he is the 8th lord in the 5th house.
• Which reading do you use? Both.
• Lagna shows what is happening overall.
• Moon shows how the mind views and reacts to what is happening.
• People often ignore Chandra Lagna and use only Lagna. For someone whose work is mental and not physical labour — an engineer, for example — how the mind views the work matters a great deal, so Chandra Lagna is important.

"Which house planets own, which house planets occupy, it will be different if you take from Lagna or from Moon. You could take from Sun, from Mars, from Jupiter — you could take various references, but the most popular references are Lagna and Moon."

Planets as Reference Points — The Extended Principle (Q2)

The Core Principle

Lagna and Moon are not the only references. Every planet is a reference for the matter it signifies. This is the philosophy of Ashtakavarga.

How to Use It

• Imagine the lagna is where the planet is. Ignore the actual ascendant.
• Judge the dasha or antardasha lord by the houses he owns and occupies from that planet.
• Example from the chart on the screen (Jupiter in Virgo, Mars in Pisces): what does Mars antardasha promise for wisdom? From Jupiter, Mars is the 8th lord in the 7th house — a maraka. During Mars's period the wisdom is affected.

Does the Reference Planet Outrank the Dasha Lord?

A student asked this. The answer is no:

"It's not that Jupiter is taking more importance. It is that Jupiter as a reference is taking more importance than Lagna, because you want to see things related to wisdom."

The dasha lord is still the planet being judged. Only the point from which his houses are counted changes.

What Lagna Itself Stands For

• Lagna is not the body and not the mind. PVNR says he has no clear words for it and only a hazy understanding of it himself.
• The image others hold of a person — how he looks, how he talks — is Arudha Lagna.
• The entity that truly exists is Lagna: the sum total of the true existence, not the perceived existence. It is the main reference for everything.

Judging a Planet — Agenda, Placement and State

Asked how to judge a person's overall wisdom, PVNR gave two halves.

First Half — Jupiter from Lagna

Exaltation alone is a thumb rule. An exalted planet is not automatically a good planet. Combine three things:

• Kendra lord in a trine: very auspicious. Trine lord in a quadrant: very auspicious.
• Trine lord in a dusthana: inauspicious.
• Dusthana lord in another dusthana and debilitated: very auspicious.
• 6th lord debilitated: good. 6th lord exalted: bad. 6th lord exalted in the 7th: bad.

This half shows whether the person's wisdom is well disposed to his entire existence — whether whatever wisdom he has will do him good.

Second Half — The Chart from Jupiter

• Ignore Lagna. Take Jupiter as lagna and read the whole chart, as you would from Lagna to call a chart fortunate or unfortunate.
• This shows whether the other planets are well disposed to Jupiter. Intelligence functions well only if the learning ability, the mind and the soul cooperate.
• PVNR calls this probably the bigger half.
• Strong from Jupiter but badly placed from Lagna: a wise person whose wisdom is of no use to his own life.

"Both are important. You can't ignore one and make a judgment just based on one."

8th Lord in the 8th — Sarala Yoga

A student objected: Jupiter in the 8th in own house — is the 8th not bad?

• The agenda is the 8th house and he is told to take care of that house. The positive side of the 8th dominates the negative.
• Some negative indications still come: sudden developments and changes in his periods. They turn out beneficial.
• Mars as 8th lord in the 8th also gives Sarala Yoga, but the changes are aggressive and brutal. With Jupiter they are gentle. A natural benefic or malefic decides whether the result comes harshly or gently. Rahu in the 8th in own house is not bad either.
• The basic meaning of a house is not negative. The 8th is uncertainty and change. Whether that is good or bad depends on the agenda of the planet placed there.
• 9th lord in the 8th: his agenda is fortune and protection, and he is told to give uncertainty. The two do not gel. The result is confusion — the protection goes through turbulence. Very bad.

"Whenever a planet is in own house, it will never harm that house."

6th Lord in the 6th — Harsha Yoga

• The 6th lord's job is to give obstacles and make you overcome them. Placed in the 6th, he makes sure the person overcomes them, so he does not give many. The person is cheerful and usually free of worry, especially if the planet is a benefic.
• Mars: likes giving obstacles. He gives problems and the courage to fight back. The person is not carefree but says "Problem? I can take care of it." An aggressive happiness.
• Jupiter: "If I give him obstacles and then let him overcome them, what's the point? Why not just make him happy?"
• The plan is executed differently; the end result is the same.

The House from the Karaka

A student asked: for hard work there is a karaka (Saturn) and there is a house (the 8th from Lagna). How do the two relate?

Every result has a house and a karaka. What Parasara taught: the house counted from the karaka is the most important.

4th from Moon — Especially in Navamsa

• Malefics in the 4th from Moon: no mental peace. This applies in Navamsa more than in Rasi.
• Rasi is the chart of physical existence, the outer self. Navamsa is the inner dharma and inner abilities, the inner self, what comes from the past life, the seat of fortune.

Navamsa Moon and Saturn's Transit

• People watch Sade Sati (Elinati Sani in Telugu) and Ashtama Sani from the Rasi Moon. Moon in Leo in Rasi: Saturn entering Cancer is the 12th from natal Moon and Sade Sati begins.
• Some classics mention the Navamsa Moon rather than the Rasi Moon for this affliction.
• Navamsa Moon in Leo: Saturn entering Cancer is even worse than for a Rasi Moon in Leo.
• Navamsa Moon in Sagittarius: Saturn in Cancer is in the 8th from it. Mental restlessness.
• What is taken is Saturn's transit in the zodiac counted from the sign of the natal Moon's navamsa.

The Main House, from the Main Karaka, in the Main Divisional Chart

• This works in all charts.
• Happiness and peace felt from learning: 4th from Moon in D-24. D-20 can be read the same way. Rasi shows only what the mind experiences physically.
• Power in the professional environment: D-10 is the chart, Sun is the karaka, the 5th is the house of power and influence over people (the 10th is what you do overall). See the 5th from Sun in D-10.

The 8th House from Lagna vs. 8th House from Saturn vs. A8

Three Different Things

Match and Mismatch

• 8th from Lagna prominent, 8th from Saturn weak and afflicted: many problems and changes in life, and no ability to work hard. A miserable situation.
• 8th from Saturn strong, 8th from Lagna not prominent: he can work hard and does not have to struggle much. When a small problem comes he works hard and is done with it. A good combination.
• A strong 8th from Saturn does not make a person unlucky. It makes him hardworking.
• A mismatch between what the two show is bad. A match is very good.

"Strength of a house" here always means the sum of the sign, its lord and the aspects on the sign.

Worked case from the class: 8th lord in the 9th (a dusthana lord put in a trine, where he is not comfortable) — the person is not very fortunate. Add a debilitated 8th lord from Saturn — he cannot work hard either. If instead the 8th lord is in the 8th, that is not bad: the person tackles problems in a straightforward way.

House vs. Arudha

• Houses show intangible things. The 8th house is the feeling within that one is going through problems. Nobody in the world can see it.
• A8 is the event: he was laid off, he had no money, he was doing odd jobs. The world knows.
• Whether a person has problems: the strength of the 8th house matters more than A8. What the problems are: A8.
