Moon in the 8th House — Marana Karaka Sthana and Maraka

Moon is the 7th lord of the rasi chart, placed in Leo in the 8th.

1. Marana Karaka Sthana. The 8th is the Marana Karaka Sthana of Moon. Moon is the 7th lord.

"So marital happiness is not good just based on this."

2. Maraka. 7th lord in the 8th: lord of a killer house in the house of longevity. Moon is the strongest maraka of the chart. He died in June 1980, in Moon dasha (1973–1983).

3. The Navamsa decides what the weak 7th means. A student pointed to the Navamsa. The teacher agreed that it matters more:

"If you see that 7th house is afflicted in Rasi, but in Navamsa you see 7th house strong, that means the person has problems not with wife, but general relations with people. Those relations are spoiled, not marital relation."

• In this chart the 7th of the Navamsa is strong (Moon in own sign). So the Rasi reading of poor marital happiness was made "based on what we saw" in the Rasi alone, and the Navamsa corrects it.

Navamsa (Dharmamsa / D-9) Analysis

Navamsa Lagna: Capricorn.

Marriage

• The 7th house shows the marriage. The 7th lord shows the spouse.
• 7th house = Cancer, with Moon in own sign. Strong. Marital happiness is there.
• A strong 7th tells you only that there is a strong marriage and a strong, nice wife.

"It doesn't mean he will be happy. To see his happiness, you have to look at Lagna and 4th house."

• Lagna: Lagna lord Saturn is in the 11th (Scorpio), an upachaya and a good house for Saturn, and aspects Lagna (3rd graha drishti). Lagna is very strong.
• 4th house (Sukha Sthana): Aries. Its lord Mars is in Taurus in the 5th. He has argala on the 4th (2nd from it) and is with two good planets, Jupiter and Venus. But Taurus is an enemy's sign: Mars and Venus are enemies. 4th lord in an enemy's house = some Sukha Lopa.
• Verdict: marital comfort is not so good, but overall he has a good marriage.

Navamsa Trines — God-Given Abilities

• A rule given here for the first time: the 1st, 5th and 9th of the Navamsa show a person's main God-given abilities. They take the nature of the planets there.
• His trines: Jupiter, Mars and Venus in the 5th (Taurus), Mercury in the 9th (Virgo). The teacher read two of them.

Sun and Venus as managers

• Sun is a macro-manager. A king: "Minister, you do this," and he is done. He does not care for the details. For a politician, Sun is important.
• Venus is a micro-manager. Passionate like Parashurama, he gets into the details. Venus is a tapasvi; he can deal with demons and make them do things — he gets work out of people who are less than perfect.
• For a manager in today's corporate sense, Venus matters more than Sun.

The Wife — from the 7th of the Navamsa

• To read the wife or husband, take the 7th as Lagna and read all the planets from there. Better still, take the sign where the 7th lord sits (see the Dvadasamsa section). Here the 7th lord Moon is in the 7th itself, so Cancer serves either way.

Trines from Cancer = her innate abilities: Moon (Cancer), Saturn (Scorpio), Sun (Pisces).

• Sun: a political knack, a political mind. She may not be a micro-manager like her husband. Whether she uses it or succeeds depends on other factors.
• Moon, very strong: love of peace, internal calm.
• Saturn: tradition and conservatism; by the śāstra, knowledge of the Puranas — in general, knowledge of the findings of the elders. The teacher did not know whether she has it.

Placements from Cancer

• Moon in Lagna: peace-loving, perhaps sensitive.
• Jupiter, Venus, Mars in the 11th (Taurus): well placed. 9th lord Jupiter with 10th lord Mars = Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. She discharges her duties in society sincerely.
• Mercury in the 3rd (Virgo): the natural communicator in the house of communication. A good communicator and writer; good authorship skills, whether books, articles or columns. A student confirmed she started a magazine.
• Rahu in the 12th (Gemini): a student thought him badly placed. From Cancer Rahu owns the 8th, Aquarius. 8th lord in the 12th is Vipareeta Raja Yoga: constant struggle in life, and then she comes up.
  • Rahu dasha runs 1990–2008. For the wife: worries and constant tension (Rahu in the 12th), but the worry is overcome in the end.

His dashas after his death

• A student objected that the native died in 1980. The teacher: the dashas still work, because his wife and children are living.

A Relative Is Seen from the Native's Point of View

• A student asked how closely the 7th-as-Lagna reading matches the wife's own chart. It does not have to match. Sometimes, with a strong karmic connection, it does.

"Whatever you see in the Navamsa about the spouse is the spouse from his point of view, how he looks at the spouse."

• The teacher's own example: in his father's Saptamsa and his mother's Saptamsa you would both times see what happens in his life. But the father may see a son with a good career who is getting a name as an astrologer, and the mother a son who ignores his health and sleeps late. One Saptamsa may show a dasha of reputation where the other shows a dasha of bad health.
• From her husband's point of view she is peace-loving. From someone else's she may be aggressive. In Indira Gandhi's chart, the second son's wife may show quite contrary indications — someone quarrelsome.
• This is not the complete reality about Menaka Gandhi. It is the reality from Sanjay Gandhi's point of view.

Which Arudha for a Relative

• While reading the wife, a student brought in the Arudha Lagna. The teacher set it aside: the subject is the wife now, so forget the Arudha Lagna.
• He explained the levels in the Dvadasamsa: the house is the situation (what the native gets from that relative); the house lord is the relative in truth (Satya); the graha arudha of that lord — an arudha of a planet, not yet taught — is the relative in the flesh.
• Do not use the arudha padas of the houses (Arudha Lagna and the rest) when reading the spouse or any other relative from the native's chart. Those arudhas are read only for the native.
• For a relative's sickness or death, he said, Maya is the better tool than Satya — through the graha arudha. Until that is taught, stay with the lord's position.
