BPHS Chapter 24 — 9th Lord in Houses 10–12: Dharma Meets Karma

9th Lord in 10th House (verse 106)

Verse: jāto rājā tat-samo vā; mantrī senāpatir vāpi; guṇavān jana-pūjitaḥ — a king or his equal, or a minister or commander; virtuous; honoured by people.

• This is probably even better than the 9th lord in the 9th: instead of a trine lord in a trine, he links the most important trine to the most important quadrant.

"It is not Dharma-Karma Yoga, but it is equivalent to that. It is some link between dharma and karma of the person."

• King, minister, commander. The 10th is stature in society and the lord of fortune is there: big stature, big karma, important work in society. He need not be a king or a minister — a respected scholar in the king's court or a good bureaucrat also fits. The bottom line is a respected person with a good position.
• Virtuous. The lord of any house in a quadrant makes that house strong, so the 9th house of character is strong. And being in the 10th house of action, he puts his dharma to use in the work he does in society.
• Honoured by people. The 5th is the following you have; the 10th is the honour you command from people on account of your deeds. Parāśara's word for the 10th is māna — honour.

9th Lord in 11th House (verse 107)

Verse: dhana-lābho dine dine; bhakto guru-janānāṁ ca; guṇavān puṇyavān api — gains day after day; devoted to gurus and elders; virtuous and doing meritorious deeds.

• Gains day by day. Fortune comes in the form of gains. "Day by day" means it is not one daśā in which he suddenly becomes fortunate: he has a profitable life in general.
• Devoted to gurus and elders. The 9th is gurus, elders, father and their words. From the 9th house as lagna this planet is in the 3rd — the house of initiative, a kāma trikoṇa. He takes initiative for them.

"We are not talking about somebody who goes and sits at the feet of the guru and does namaskar every day. What we are talking about is somebody who does his work."

• If the guru says build a temple, he goes and collects the money. If the guru says spread astrology, he enrols people for classes. If the guru says a programme should be written, he starts writing it.
• Virtuous. The 9th lord has argala on lagna from the 11th. He not only knows right from wrong; it is part of his personality and his sense of self.
• A9 falls in lagna. The tangible things that make the world think "he is so dhārmic" are in his own nature and conduct.
• Meritorious deeds (a student's point, accepted). From the 11th the 9th lord has argala on the 10th house as well, and secondary argala on the 7th (he is in a trine from it); the 11th is also the house of friends. So he acts, and deals with people, more than in the other placements.
• The 9th lord in the 9th, 10th and 11th are all very good.

9th Lord in 12th House (verse 108)

Verse: bhāgya-hāni-karaḥ; śubha-kārye vyayo nityam; nirdhano 'tithi-saṅgamāt — causes loss of fortune; always spending on auspicious deeds; made poor by the company of guests.

• Loss of fortune. The lord of fortune is in the house of loss. He may lose a fortune. (Fortune made in a foreign country is also possible from the 12th, but the verse does not speak of it.)
• Spends on auspicious work. The 9th is auspicious and dhārmic activity; the 12th is spending, using, investing. He may build a temple. If you are collecting donations for a temple, a person with the 9th lord in the 12th is a better candidate to ask than one with the 9th lord in the 11th.
• Poor through guests. The extreme form of the same thing: feeding guests, building temples and inns, charity — to the point of spending everything. Atithi devo bhava.
• Not a bad combination. The 12th is a mokṣa trikoṇa. Letting go is hard; the highest is letting go of the ego, and failing that, of money or property. Doing so on account of dharma (9th) is better still.

"Being able to give something is a great thing. After all, it is a mokṣa trikoṇa. If you are doing it on account of dharma, it is even better. You are making progress with respect to dharma and mokṣa."
