The Chart and the D-24 Rectification — Cancer or Leo

The Question

• A student brings the chart. The native is finishing two bachelor's degrees in four years: mathematics and applied physics.
• He wanted medicine but did not get into the universities he wanted (spring 2007). He started the bachelor's in August–September 2007.
• He has been a top student always, and is top in the present programme too.
• Question: what should he do for the master's — continue in applied mathematics, or move to the medical field? A switch is possible by taking some qualifying courses.

What the Site's Chart Shows Differently

The class placements (Sūrya Siddhānta) in D-24, with Leo lagna: Sun and Mars in Virgo (2nd), nodes in Scorpio (4th), Venus in Capricorn (6th), Saturn in Aries (9th), Jupiter in Taurus (10th), Mercury and Moon in Gemini (11th).

• The site's D-24 agrees on the Sun (Virgo), Mercury (Gemini) and Venus (Capricorn).
• The site's D-24 shows Mars in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Cancer, and the nodes in Virgo. It also gives Leo lagna at the stated time itself; the teacher's software gave Cancer, turning to Leo 8 seconds later.
• The site's D-10 agrees with the class (Capricorn lagna, Mars in lagna, Venus in Cancer, Sun in Leo, Jupiter in Virgo, Moon in Scorpio) except Ketu, which the class has in Virgo with Jupiter and the site has in Leo.
• Read the notes below with the class placements.

Rāśi Chart — 4th House First

• The 4th house of education has its own lord, the Sun, in Leo. The 5th lord Mercury is there too, with Mars and Ketu.
• Sun and Mercury are far apart in degrees, so the 4th lord–5th lord conjunction is "not a big deal".
• The Sun is in gaṇḍānta but in own sign. Ketu, an enemy, is the closest planet to him, a couple of degrees away. So the 4th lord has an affliction.
• Overall, education is fine in the rāśi chart.

Why Rectify

• In D-24 the lagna changes 3 minutes 43 seconds earlier (Gemini) and 8 seconds later (Leo). The software shows Cancer.
• Four minutes of error cannot be ruled out, so Gemini is possible, but Cancer or Leo is more likely.
• The one clue: he has always been a top student.

Cancer Lagna in D-24

• Lagna lord Moon is in the 12th with the 12th lord Mercury. Mercury is strong there, but he is the Moon's enemy. Lagna lord in the 12th in an inimical sign, joined with the 12th lord: a duryoga.
• Venus aspects the lagna by graha dṛṣṭi from Capricorn. He is the 4th and 11th lord, a functional malefic. As 4th lord he does stand for education, but his aspect on lagna is not good.
• 9th lord Jupiter is in the 11th. Any lord in the 11th is good for that lord, and Parāśara gives good results for the 9th lord in the 11th. But he is in an inimical sign, so the result is feeble. He is also in the bādhaka sthāna.
• The 5th has Rāhu and Ketu. Ketu is fine in Scorpio. Rāhu is the 8th lord, sitting in the 5th.
• Jupiter daśā ran through the basic schooling. Jupiter owns the 6th and 9th. A student recalls the note that Jupiter is benefic for Cancer lagna as kāraka of the 9th; the teacher agrees that is what Parāśara taught, "but he is a weak benefic". He aspects the 5th house and the 5th lord by graha dṛṣṭi, so some recognition is possible.
• Verdict: "The case is not really that strong."

Leo Lagna in D-24 (10 Seconds Added)

• Lagna is empty and not fully aspected by anybody.
• Lagna lord Sun is in Virgo with Mars, the 9th lord and yogakāraka. Lagna lord and 9th lord together.
• 5th lord Jupiter is in the 10th. A trine lord in a quadrant.
• Jupiter owns the 5th and 8th. The 8th is neutral according to Parāśara: go by the other house and by the planets he is with. He is with nobody; the other house is the 5th. So Jupiter is a strong benefic. Being in Venus's sign is a small minus.
• Jupiter aspects the lagna lord and the 9th lord by graha dṛṣṭi (5th aspect, Taurus to Virgo). The three trine lords — Sun, Mars, Jupiter — are in mutual trine.

"Trine placement is also yoga. Just like two planets being together is yoga, two planets being in quadrants, two planets being in trines — all these are different kinds of yogas, different kinds of influencing each other."

• Jupiter daśā (D-24 Vimśottarī from the D-24 Moon; Rāhu daśā ended March 1992) covered most of the basic education. A strong benefic's daśā fits the top student.
• Saturn daśā runs now. Saturn is the 6th and 7th lord, a malefic, debilitated and retrograde. The disappointment over medicine came in his daśā.

"Overall, his chart is good, but the daśā that is running right now is not that good."

• Leo lagna is taken.

D-24 Chara Daśā — Scorpio and the Nodes in the 4th

The teacher checks the lagna with Parāśara's Chara daśā computed for D-24 before closing the rectification.

• Leo (to 2000, the first 11 years): it is the lagna and its lord gives a yoga. Good.
• Virgo: holds the planets giving the yoga. Very good.
• Libra: the 3rd house — competing, initiative. Its lord Venus is in the 6th. As 10th lord that may be bad, but for the 3rd lord the 6th is a good placement. Success in competition. A student confirms he won selection in a contest at about age ten.
• Scorpio: began around spring 2007 — when the admission he wanted did not come — and runs till 2016.

Reading the Scorpio Daśā

A student asks whether to take Scorpio as lagna. Answer: that also, but first see which house the sign is. The 6th gives obstacles, the 8th sudden changes, the 9th fortune.

• Scorpio is the 4th house. It cannot stop education.
• One of its lords, Mars, is in the yoga with the lagna lord. Jupiter aspects it by graha dṛṣṭi from Taurus.
• The problem: the nodes are in it. The 4th is the overall direction in this area of life, and peace of mind — the sense that things are going well.

"There is a confusion and there is a lack of 'okay, things are going well.' He is unsure now. That uncertainty comes because of the nodes."

• Are these nodes functionally benefic or malefic? Rule: see the house they are in and the planets they are with. They are in a kendra, not in the 6th or 8th. Also see the sign: Scorpio is an evil sign. They are with nobody. So they are neutral.
• Reading: confusion during Scorpio daśā, but with Mars a yogakāraka joined with the lagna lord it will not ruin his studies.

The Annual Chart of 2006 — the Year of the Setback

The teacher opens the Tājaka annual (solar return) chart. The rejection came before the August 2007 birthday, so he takes the year starting 19 August 2006, 9:11 AM, and reads its D-24. (The site's cast of that moment agrees on Scorpio lagna and Mars in Aquarius only.)

• Lagna Scorpio holds Jupiter with Rāhu and Ketu: Guru Chāṇḍāla yoga in lagna.
• It can be argued as a yoga of the lagna lord (Ketu), 4th lord (Rāhu) and 5th lord (Jupiter). The teacher rejects that. Parāśara did not cover Rāhu and Ketu here, but he said of Jupiter and Saturn that a rāja yoga between them does not give much, because they are not great friends. Jupiter and Rāhu are enemies. Jupiter is not comfortable in Ketu's sign with them; Rāhu is.

"The yoga given by them, even though it may seem like yoga, it is not really a good yoga."

• Lagna lord: Ketu sits in the sign itself, so the stronger lagna lord is the one away from it — Mars. He is in a quadrant, which is fine, but in an inimical sign (Aquarius) and afflicted by Mercury, the 8th and 11th lord and a functional malefic. Lagna lord with 8th lord is a duryoga, the opposite of a rāja yoga.
• 9th lord Moon is in the 8th, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. Fortune is absent for the year.
• The saviour is Jupiter, the 5th lord in a friendly sign. Jupiter in Scorpio is much stronger than Mars in Aquarius despite the nodes. So education did not stop; he had to take something other than what he wanted.
• From the annual D-24 Vimśottarī one could have warned of setbacks in the Moon, Rāhu, Mercury and possibly Mars daśās, and pointed him to the Jupiter and Saturn (3rd lord in the 3rd) daśās for anything he could time, such as when to apply. The dates of the results were not known, so this was left.

What an Annual Chart Is For

A student suggests Ketu in the annual chart pushed him to mathematics. The teacher steps back:

"Just like the sex of the child we don't see in the annual chart — similarly, what kind of education he goes to. You can look at the annual chart to see the timing: which year is good, which month is good. To see what kind of bachelor's education he has, I suggest going back to the natal chart."

Natal D-24 — Bachelor's (9th House) and Master's (2nd House)

Bachelor's — the 9th House

• The 9th (Aries) holds Saturn, a functional malefic here. His role is limited: obstacles and setbacks in the bachelor's education. He may not control what exactly is studied.
• So look at the lord. Mars is strong, so he controls the subject. Mars: engineering, applied subjects.
• Mars is in Virgo, a Mercurian sign. Virgo can show mathematics.
• Mars is with the Sun, the planet of physics. Mars is practical; the Sun is the theory.

"Sun–Mars combination can show applied physics."

• Sun–Mars can also be a surgeon. Because they are in Virgo, an intellectual and mathematical sign, it ends up as physics.
• Caveat from the teacher: "We should not pretend to know exactly what each combination, each sign shows. We have to do some research." The Sun shows many theories — music, physics, surgery, management.

Master's — the 2nd House

• A student asks: 2nd or 3rd house for the master's? The 2nd.
• The 9th lord Mars is in the 2nd: a link between bachelor's and master's. What he studied for the bachelor's he is likely to continue.
• Besides the occupants, see the 2nd lord. Mercury is in own sign in the 11th, very strong. A good yoga, 2nd lord in the 11th.
• When the lord of a sign is very strong he can dominate the planets in his sign. Mercury shows mathematics, accounting and more; most likely mathematics.

"If Sun and Mars were in Virgo with Mars dominating, it could have been surgery. But Sun and Mars being in Virgo with Mercury dominating — compared to the rāja yoga givers, the dispositor is the strongest planet in this chart."

• Gut feeling: he continues in applied physics and mathematics, and becomes more mathematical and theoretical in Mercury's period, since Mercury is more theoretical than Mars.

D-10 — the Likely Profession

Whatever he does for the master's is likely to be his profession, so the teacher turns to D-10. Its lagna is taken as right: it changes 3 minutes 53 seconds earlier and 5 minutes 26 seconds later.

• A student picks the strong planets: Mars exalted in lagna (leadership) and 8th lord Sun in own sign in the 8th (research, hard work). The teacher accepts this and returns to the main house.
• 10th lord Venus is in the 7th, in Cancer. The 7th is interaction: a career of dealing with people.
• Venus owns the 5th and 10th, a yogakāraka, well placed in a quadrant. He is the best planet in the chart.
• Venus is in Īśāna's daśāṁśa. Īśāna is an auspicious form of Śiva, the guru and the priest: teachers, priests, religion, spirituality — respected, dharmic professions.
• Jupiter is in the 9th, whose kāraka he is, and aspects the lagna by graha dṛṣṭi. Venus is the teacher of the demons and Jupiter the teacher of the gods. Both show teaching.
• "One strong possibility based on the daśāṁśa is teaching."

The Case for Medicine in D-10

• Venus in a lunar sign can show healing.
• Venus is aspected by a strong Mars from lagna (graha dṛṣṭi).
• Venus's dispositor, the Moon, is debilitated in Scorpio, a Martian sign. A debilitated Moon associated with Mars, Rāhu or Ketu can show surgery.
• So D-10 gives medicine a chance, though the education chart did not seem to show it.

D-10 Vimśottarī — Venus Daśā from 2018

• Counted from the D-10 Moon, Venus daśā starts in August 2018, when he is 29, and runs 20 years.
• "Till 2018, things may be a little slow, but from 2018 his career will be very smooth."

Medicine or Mathematics — Reconciling, and the Annual Charts of 2011 and 2012

The Two Pulls in D-24

• The 2nd lord is Mercury: mathematics.
• The 2nd house holds Sun and Mars: surgery is possible.
• The running Chara daśā is Scorpio, a Martian sign holding Rāhu and Ketu. The nodes, especially in Scorpio, can show medicine, surgery, modern medicine. So Mars can dominate for now. The D-24 Vimśottarī is Saturn–Mercury.
• The 2nd house of the master's holds a rāja yoga, unlike the 9th with its malefic. Where the bachelor's had obstacles, the master's may bring lucky breaks.

"After reconciling, especially given that the daśāṁśa shows a strong possibility of a doctor, there is a scope for changing the track once he goes to master's and trying to do medicine."

• A student asks whether Ketu behaves like Mars here. Answer: Ketu always has some behaviour of Mars, and here he is in a Martian sign anyway.

Annual Chart of August 2011, D-24 — Still Confused

• The natal combination repeats: Sun and Mars in the 2nd, lagna lord with the 9th lord. He studies well this year.
• Saturn, the 6th and 7th lord, is exalted in the 3rd. A clear malefic in the 3rd is well placed.
• Jupiter is with him. He owns the 5th and 8th. By the other house he is benefic; by the planet he is with, a clear malefic, he is malefic. Net: mildly benefic. The sign's friendliness does not enter functional nature. A mild benefic in the 3rd, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna, in an inimical sign: Jupiter is badly placed.
• Mercury and Mars exchange signs (2nd lord and 4th lord). That is neither a rāja yoga nor a duryoga — nothing special.
• The 4th house of direction holds Mercury (also the 11th lord) and Venus (3rd and 10th lord), two functional malefics. The nodes are in the 10th; by Parāśara's rule they are not functional malefics there.
• The year's Vimśottarī opens the semester with Venus daśā, a functional malefic in the 4th: unhappy, uncomfortable.
• The 8th house is not strong enough to show a big change, and a switch to medicine after two degrees in mathematics and physics is a big change.
• Verdict: some success, but confusion and uncertainty. No smooth switch this year.

Annual Chart of August 2012, D-24 — the Break

• Capricorn lagna (near a border; accepted on the strength of the rectification).
• The 9th holds Venus, Mercury and the Sun within one degree of each other in D-24 (the teacher reads out 15°47', 15°07', 15°47').
  • Venus is the yogakāraka, 5th and 10th lord. Debilitated, but in a trine with the exalted 9th lord.
  • Mercury owns the 6th and 9th and sits in the 9th: slightly benefic.
  • The Sun is the 8th lord and owns no other house, so judge him by his company: a slight benefic and a big benefic. He is a benefic. A benefic 8th lord gives auspicious sudden changes.
  • Sun and Venus are not friends, but each is Mercury's friend and this is Mercury's sign: "it is my house… I will put them in a decent relationship."
• The 11th holds Moon, Mars and Jupiter: Chandra–Maṅgala, Gaja Kesarī and Guru–Maṅgala yogas. Mars is the 11th lord in own sign. All three are functional malefics, but the 11th is good for malefics, and good for anybody. A strong 11th: desires fulfilled, things happen suddenly.
• Lagna lord Saturn is in the 6th. For Saturn that is very good: he applies himself to the obstacles.
• The 4th lord is in own sign: direction found.
• Only Rāhu and Ketu are poorly placed.

"Next year's chart shows relief — relief, happiness, the feeling that 'okay, I have done it. Finally I have done it.' That feeling in the field of education. And it shows some fortunate breaks."

• 2012–2013 is the year to look forward to — about a year and a half ahead at the time of the class. The auspicious change can come in the Sun, Mercury or Venus daśā of that year.

A Job This Year? — Annual D-10 of 2011

• The 10th holds its own lord Mercury, exalted, with the debilitated 6th lord: a very good combination. The 9th is strong too.
• The 5th of recognition holds Rāhu, the 3rd lord, blocking it. The 5th lord Mars is in the 12th in own sign but with Saturn, kāraka of the 12th and of giving up.

"He may get an opportunity, but he may reject it."

• Lagna lord Jupiter is in the 11th but joined by Ketu, the 12th lord.
• The strongest pull towards a job is the Mercury daśā of the year's D-10 Vimśottarī, about 20 August to 11 October 2011. That daśā is counted from the annual chart's own D-10 Moon (see Part 10).
• Verdict: he may not take up a job. He may go for the master's.

The Advice

• In the natal D-10 Vimśottarī, Ketu daśā starts in November 2011. Ketu is in the 9th, a good house, but with Jupiter, the 3rd and 12th lord; so he is neutral. He is also the bādhaka lord. Not a great period to start a career.
• The natal D-24 has a fine yoga in the 2nd house of the master's, with a strong lord, and the 2012 annual chart is good.
• A smart person with a powerful D-24 does well to collect more degrees.

"It's a good idea to go for master's and also keep eyes open for an opportunity to do something that he likes, like medicine."

Remedy — from the Divisional Chart's Daśā

A student asks whether a remedy should follow the Vimśottarī of the divisional chart or of the rāśi chart. Answer: the divisional chart's, because the question is about one area of life and there is a chart for it. The teacher then applies it:

• The matter is education and the wish is medicine, so D-24.
• Saturn daśā runs in the D-24 Vimśottarī, a functional malefic's daśā, causing the problems. The deity to propitiate for Saturn: Viṣṇu.
• Mercury is the key strong planet: 2nd lord and 11th lord in the 11th, showing fulfilment of desires during the master's. Again Viṣṇu.
• In the natal rāśi chart Mercury is in the 4th house.

"Everything is converging to Viṣṇu. So Viṣṇu Sahasranāma is the best thing for this person."

Transits from the Chara Daśā Sign, and 2018

The teacher says he has not yet checked transits against sub-divisional charts, but divisional-chart daśās do correlate with transits. He shows it on this chart.

The Rule

• Take the Chara daśā sign of the divisional chart as lagna. Make an ordinary transit chart for the date and read the rāśi positions from that sign.
• First: who is transiting in the daśā sign, and how the daśā sign's lord is transiting.
• Second: the relevant house. A house from the daśā sign is triggered when it is strong in transit — its lord transiting it or aspecting it — provided the natal chart has the potential for that event.
• Earlier examples he recalls: lagna lord and 5th lord in the 5th — promotion. Lagna lord in the 8th with Rāhu — layoff. 7th lord exalted, or lagna lord in the 7th — marriage.
• There are more rules from Aṣṭakavarga; these are the basic ones.

Applied — Scorpio Daśā of D-24

• Now: Jupiter transits Pisces, the 5th from Scorpio, as 5th lord in the 5th. Recognition, academic distinction, admission to a good university are possible. He is also the 5th lord and a good planet in the natal D-24, which makes it better. Mars, one lord of Scorpio, is exalted in transit. "Right now time is good."
• But: the nodes are on the 2nd–8th axis from Scorpio. Ketu, the other lord, is in the 8th: setbacks, changes, an end or a break in education.
• Next: Rāhu and Ketu transiting Scorpio and Taurus — the lagna lords on the 1st–7th axis in debility. In the natal D-24 Rāhu afflicts Scorpio (Ketu, being its lord, does not). Rāhu over Scorpio is not a great period, and it is coming soon.
• Then: Rāhu moves to Libra and Ketu to Aries, the 6th. A natural malefic in the 6th is good, and a lagna lord who is a natural malefic in the 6th is very good. Jupiter will be in Taurus, aspecting Scorpio by graha dṛṣṭi — the 5th lord aspecting the lagna.

"When Ketu transits Aries and Jupiter transits Taurus, some good events will happen in his education."

• That is the end of 2012 and 2013, the same year the annual chart picked.

2018 — Two Daśās of D-10 Start Together

• Chara daśā of D-10: Libra runs 2018–2027. Libra is the 10th house and its lord Venus is the yogakāraka.
• Venus daśā of the D-10 Vimśottarī also starts in August 2018.
• His education may drag on; he may work a little, go back to a master's, change line, study four or five more years. "I will not be surprised."

"Do whatever experiments you want to do. Feel free to do experiments with the education, because after 2018 his career is almost guaranteed to be very, very successful."

• It should start with the first antardaśā itself: 2018, at most 2019–2020. "Position yourself for that good daśā."
