Muhurta Philosophy — Priority of Factors (Lagna > Tithi/Nakshatra > Month), Un-Used Muhurta Is Not Bad & Bhadrapada Masa
Muhurta priority from most to least: (1) Lagna and planetary positions at the muhurta time — most important; (2) Tithi bala and Nakshatra bala; (3) other panchanga: Karana, Vara, Yoga; (4) lunar month (masa) — low priority; (5) year — even lower. Practical implication: if Shravana masa (auspicious month) has terrible tithi and nakshatra, better to use a moderate month with good tithi/nakshatra. Month factor is NOT a major consideration. Un-used muhurta question: if a client couldn't execute something at the muhurta you gave, was it a bad muhurta? Answer: NO. "Whether a muhurta was executed or not does NOT tell you if it was good or bad. Judge the muhurta by what happens AFTER it is executed." Three reasons: (1) if person's dasha pulls toward bad muhurta, destiny will make them reject the good one; (2) if destined not to execute, the lagna at that moment likely had a weakness too; (3) astrologer's job = give best muhurta; what client does with it = their karma. Bhadrapada masa: traditionally inauspicious for new beginnings — it is one standard factor to note, but minor. If tithi, nakshatra, and lagna are good, Bhadrapada alone doesn't invalidate the muhurta.

Muhurta Philosophy
Priority of Muhurta Factors
From most to least important:
- Lagna and planetary positions at the muhurta time (most important)
- Tithi bala and Nakshatra bala (next most important)
- Other panchanga elements: Karana, Vara, Yoga
- Lunar month (masa) — a low-priority factor
- Year — even lower (e.g., avoiding a year when Jupiter is in a weak sign)
Practical implication: If a Shravana masa (auspicious month) has a terrible tithi and nakshatra, it is better to use a moderate month with a good tithi and nakshatra. The month factor is NOT a major consideration.
Whether Un-Used Muhurta = Bad Muhurta
A common misconception: if a client could not execute something at the muhurta you gave, the muhurta must have been bad.
PVNR's view:
— PVNR"Whether a muhurta was actually executed or not does NOT tell you if it was good or bad. You judge the muhurta based on what happens AFTER it is executed."
Three things to understand:
- If the person's dasha and destiny are pulling them toward a bad muhurta (e.g., selected by an unqualified priest), destiny will cause them to use that bad time and suffer the consequences. They will find reasons to reject the good muhurta you gave.
- If someone was destined to NOT be able to do something at a good time, the same weakness in their chart will likely be reflected in the chart drawn at the time you selected the muhurta (lagna at that moment may have had a weakness).
- The astrologer's job is to give the best muhurta possible. What the client does with it is their karma.
Bhadrapada masa: Traditionally considered an inauspicious month for new beginnings. It is one standard factor to note — but it is a minor factor. If the tithi, nakshatra, and lagna are good, Bhadrapada masa alone doesn't invalidate the muhurta.
