The Three-Level Framework
Lagna (inner truth), Arudha Lagna (perceived reality), and Arudha Pada (tangible manifestation) — the most important conceptual distinction in Parāśarī Jyotiṣa. Includes Trikona groupings and Rashi vs Varga chart roles.
"When you look at houses from Lagna, those houses show what is inherently within you. They show the truth. They show the ultimate reality, absolute reality. That is something that you cannot perceive, nobody can judge, nobody can measure. It is just hidden."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Review of the Three-Level Framework
The Core Distinction
PVNR opens with a review of the key teaching from the previous lesson, described as the most important conceptual foundation in the series:
— PVNR"When you look at houses from Lagna, those houses show what is inherently within you. They show the truth. They show the ultimate reality, absolute reality. That is something that you can't perceive, nobody can judge, nobody can measure. It is just hidden. It is the hidden reality, hidden truth."
There are three levels of reality for any house:
| Level | What it shows | Example (5th house in D20) |
|---|---|---|
| House from Lagna | Inner reality / absolute truth | Real devotion — unknown even to oneself |
| House from Arudha Lagna | Perceived reality / how people see it | Others' impression of your spiritual practice |
| Arudha of the house (Arudha Pada) | Tangible manifestation in the world | The mantras you actually chant; pujas performed |
D20 Example (Spiritual Pursuit)
- D20 = chart of religious and spiritual growth
- 5th house in D20 = the kind of devotion and discipline one has (not scholarship — that is D24)
- An illiterate person can be spiritually very advanced → discipline and devotion are the operative qualities
- A5 in D20 = the mantras one recites, pujas performed, temples visited — all tangible religious acts
- These are a measure of devotion, not devotion itself; they are the illusory world's way of gauging the truth
— PVNR"The devotion that is inherently within you, nobody really knows it. But the pujas that you do, the mantras you recite, the temples that you visit, all these things are tangible manifestations of your devotion."
The Three Aspects of Any Matter
Taking the 3rd house (drive, initiative, communication) as the example:
| Parameter | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 3rd house from Lagna | Real inner initiative / real communication skills |
| 3rd house from Arudha Lagna | How people perceive your initiative and drive |
| A3 (Arudha of 3rd house) | Tangible things that manifest from your drive — lectures, articles, written books, weapons |
PVNR's own example:
- His D24 5th lord (Venus) in 9H + 11L (Mars) in 12H → he constantly gives away knowledge and always gets more in return
- Lectures on MP3, articles in magazines like Express Star Teller and Jyotish Digest — these are A3 (tangible manifestation of communication drive)
A5 in Dasamsa — Awards
- A5 in D10 = tangible recognition: awards, prizes, hit movies, box office success
- 5th from AL = how people judge your abilities (they may dispute the award's fairness)
- 5th from Lagna = your real inherent abilities
— PVNR"If you see the dasha and antardasha and it doesn't make sense, accept it and move on. If you somehow explain it, you will not learn. Be very honest, intellectually very honest."
Trikona Groupings: Seed, Process, Fruit
Dharma Trikonas (1, 5, 9)
| House | Role |
|---|---|
| 1st | Seed of Dharma — your very existence defines your duties |
| 5th | Abilities — not everyone has the same abilities, so not everyone has the same Dharma |
| 9th | Final duties — what you actually render to the world |
— PVNR"Somebody with high abilities has high Dharma. Somebody with low abilities has low duties."
Artha Trikonas (2, 6, 10)
| House | Role |
|---|---|
| 2nd | Seed of karma — resources: money, speech, family, raw material |
| 6th | Overcoming obstacles in the process of executing karma |
| 10th | Final karma — what you actually do in society |
— PVNR"2nd house is the resources, 6th house is using those resources to overcome the obstacles, and 10th house is finally after overcoming the obstacles, what is the karma that you are doing in the society?"
Kama Trikonas (3, 7, 11)
| House | Role |
|---|---|
| 3rd | Seed of desire — drive, initiative, spark, motivation |
| 7th | Desire itself — what one truly wants |
| 11th | Gains from desire — fulfilment |
— PVNR"Kama Trikonas, 3, 7, and 11 — these 3 houses will show what drives you."
A3 and Weapons
A critical subtlety: 3rd house = initiative, not war. War itself = 6th house (overcoming obstacles).
- 3rd house = the spark to go to war, the bravery to fight
- 6th house = the actual war; defeating the enemy, overcoming the obstacle
- A3 = tangible measure of bravery → specifically: the weapons one carries
— PVNR"If I come to you with a small knife, will you think I am brave? Or if I come with a big sword? The sword that I am carrying — that will make you decide how bold I am. So one of the things that A3 shows are the weapons."
Implication: malefics (especially Rahu/Ketu) in A3 → very destructive weapons in the person's possession. Jupiter in 3rd from AL → people think the person won't use them.
Rashi Chart vs Varga Charts
Rashi = Physical Existence
- Rashi chart shows physical body — what the body experiences
- Physical comfort, physical health, physical house, car driven — all from Rashi
- NOT where you look for education quality, spiritual advancement, career success in their own right
— PVNR"If you are specifically interested in a particular matter, directly go to the divisional chart. You will be very successful that way."
PVNR's Own D24 Chart (Learning Chart)
- Lagna: Gemini in D24
- Venus (5L = scholarship, 12L = giving) in 9H = Dharma house → his dharma is to build scholarship and give it away
- Mars (11L = gains) in 12H = vyaya/giving → whatever he gains in learning, he immediately gives away
- Classical dictum: 11L in 12H → always gaining but always spending
- In D24 context: gains knowledge but always gives it back, and gains more in return
- Venus in 8H in Rasi chart → at physical level he works hard with his body (8th house = hard work, tension)
— PVNR"My father took my Rashi chart to an old astrologer. He said, 'oh, this guy is very unlucky, he will be a teacher.' But I did quite okay in education because he used thumb rules — saw many planets in 8H and thought the man is troubled."
D60 (Shashtiamsa) — Karmic Blueprint
- D60 is the most fundamental chart — blueprint of karma from all past lives
- No Arudha in D60 — at the level of karma there is only truth (Satya), no illusion, no Maya
- Whether physical matters show good or bad results depends on the D60 amsha a planet occupies
- Changes every ~2 minutes of birth time → needs very accurate birth time to use reliably
— PVNR"In D60, Parasara said you see everything, because that is the overall karma. Whether it is in my learning or spiritual pursuit or in the matter of children, whatever I experience, if the particular planet shows bad karma from past life, it only shows suffering."
D60 Amsha Meanings (key ones mentioned in this lesson):
| Amsha | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Komala | Delicate, gentle; prosperity that is fragile |
| Dawaagni | Forest fire — turbulence; destroys rotten things for new beginning; lot of pain in the process |
| Kalamsa (Kala) | Time personified; disciplined, detached, emotionless, ruthless balancing |
| Yakshamsa | Yakshas = skilled, magical demigods; rise in stature to near-magical level; India shining |
D1 hierarchy in D60 (levels of existence):
- D1–D12 = physical level
- D12–D24 = consciousness level
- D24–D36 = subconscious level
- D36+ = supraconscious / karmic level
India's Independence Chart
Planetary Positions
- Venus (LL): 3rd house with Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn
- Ketu: 7th house (own sign Scorpio) — own sign but bad house for Ketu; confusion between materialism and renunciation
- Sun: 3rd house (Cancer, Moon's house — friend's sign; good for a malefic)
- Rahu: has Argala on A3 (A3 is in Aries)
Navamsa (International Relations)
- Lagna: Pisces
- Venus (3L + 8L from Pisces) = functional malefic in Navamsa
- Venus + Saturn together → both are dusthana lords (3L + 8L, and 11L + 12L from Pisces) → Vipreet Raj Yoga
— PVNR"Vipreet Raj Yoga: dusthana lords together → first some struggle and then sudden great results." "Viprita means reversal. It gives great results after reversal."
- Venus–Saturn antardasha (2002) = peak of Vipreet Raj Yoga → India's international stature rises; new friendships with US, Pakistan, Europe
Key Principle: Mahadasha vs Antardasha Level
— PVNR"Mahadasha, the level of mahadasha, is ruled by Sun. Sun shows Shiva, Satya, truth. So at the level of mahadasha, houses and house lordships are more important — not Arudhas." "Antardasha level is ruled by Moon. Moon shows Devi, Shakti, Maya. So at the level of antardashas, Arudhas are far more important."
Practical application in India's chart:
- Venus Mahadasha → look at Venus as 3H (lagna lord in 3H with 3rd lord Mercury + Jupiter + Saturn) = new beginning; brave decision-making
- Venus Antardasha (Rahu AD) → look at Rahu's Argala on A3 (Aries) = nuclear weapons test, 1998
Saturn Mahadasha (1947–1965)
- Saturn: 9L + 10L from Taurus = Yogakaraka (trikona + kendra lord)
- Placed in 3rd house
- D60 amsha: Komala (delicate) → prosperity is fragile; India worked hard (Saturn's nature) to get there
- Results: Green Revolution, dams built, industrialization — physical infrastructure (Rashi chart shows this)
- D60 of Saturn for Leo lagna (D60 chart): Saturn is 6L + 7L → functional malefic → karma of war and enmity
- Physical level: prosperity and building; karmic level: wars with Pakistan and China
Mercury Mahadasha (1965–1982)
- Mercury = 2L + 5L from Taurus = functional benefic
- D60 amsha: Dawaagni (forest fire) → turbulence; destroys bad things, creates new beginning, but with lot of pain
- Results: Emergency period (Indira Gandhi forced sterilization programs under Sanjay Gandhi); population control through forced vasectomy → turbulence in country; new beginning through destruction of rot
— PVNR"Dawaagni means forest fire. It basically destroys the bad wood so that there is a new beginning. Lot of pain and suffering in that process."
Ketu Mahadasha (1982–1989)
- Ketu = natural lord of 7H (Scorpio) in Rashi chart; own sign
- 7H is Kama/desire — but Ketu is the planet of Moksha and renunciation
- Confusion: planet of Moksha placed in house of desire = confusion between materialism and detachment
- D60: Ketu in 2nd house (resources) → resource crisis; 2nd house = resources burnt (Ketu = Dhumra Ketu = smoky, evaporates things)
- Results: Rajiv Gandhi era, Indira Gandhi's assassination (1984), financial crunch; India opening to foreign participation; Rahu/Ketu = significators of foreign things
- Also: 7H = relationships with others → India opening to the world
— PVNR"Ketu is also called Dhumra Ketu — basically the smoking Ketu. That means he converts that house to smoke, evaporates that house."
Venus Mahadasha (1989–2009)
- Venus = LL (Lagna Lord) placed in 3H
- D60 amsha: Kalamsa (Kala = time personified) → discipline, detachment, emotionless new beginning
- Results: India makes a new bold beginning, cold and disciplined (Saturn is the karka for Kala)
- Navamsa: Venus = 3L + 8L → functional malefic; instability in foreign policy at the start of Venus dasha (Russia fell, India rethought foreign policy)
- Vipreet Raj Yoga (Venus + Saturn as dusthana lords in Navamsa): struggle in foreign policy → peak in Saturn antardasha (2002) = India's international stature rises
— PVNR"India will make a new beginning without any emotion. A new beginning, basically cold."
Sun Mahadasha (2009–2015)
- Sun in 3H (Cancer, Moon's house = friend's sign) — good placement for malefic
- D60 amsha: Yakshamsa → Yakshas = skilled, magical, near-divine; "India will really shine"
- D60 Raj Yoga: Sun (lagna lord in D60, Leo lagna) + Mars (4L + 9L from Leo) have mutual aspect → great Raj Yoga in D60
- Navamsa: Sun = 6L from Pisces, placed in Lagna = "enemy sitting on your head" → unavoidable enmity, possible war
- Physical level: India shining, respect in the world (Yakshamsa); International relations: potential troubled period, enemy-driven conflict
— PVNR"6L in Lagna = enemy comes and sits on you, that means an unavoidable enmity, unavoidable war."
India's Image in the World
- From Lagna: Jupiter in 3H → India's real initiative is slow, peaceful
- From AL: 3H from AL = Virgo, aspected by Sun (Pisces) and Mars (Sagittarius) via Rashi aspect → world perceives India as aggressive
— PVNR"India is seen as an aggressive country. That may not really be India, but that is how India is seen."
Nuclear Test 1998 (Venus MD, Rahu AD)
Demonstrating the Mahadasha/Antardasha distinction:
- Venus Mahadasha → look at houses (not Arudhas): Venus in 3H = period of bravery, new beginnings, bold decisions
- Rahu Antardasha → look at Arudhas: Rahu has Argala on A3 (Aries); nuclear weapons must manifest
- Why Rahu/Ketu, not Mars?
— PVNR"Rahu and Ketu are the planets of sudden shocking things. Mars can also show sudden things, but Mars is the planet of determination. Rahu is the planet of shock. So Rahu is the planet who can show nuclear weapons."
— PVNR"All weapons that can kill will be shown by Mars, but big explosion is shown by Rahu and Ketu."
Birth Time Rectification
Problem with Birth Times
— PVNR"When my daughter was born I had a calibrated watch. The time noted in the birth certificate is wrong by a minute and a half. Even I noted down various times because there are different definitions — when you see the head, when the baby falls on earth, when they cut the umbilical cord, when the baby breathes."
- Even times given to the second may be inaccurate
- Chinese example: "I was born between 9 and 10"
- Rounded to 15-minute marks common in older records
Pranapada Lagna (PP) — Defining Human Birth
- Pranapada Lagna (PP in Jagannatha Hora): must be in trine from Moon, or in the 7th from Moon, in Navamsa (not Rashi chart)
- Moon is the karaka (significator) for human beings
- If PP is not in trine/7th from Moon in Navamsa → birth chart may not represent a human being (but this is a very extreme and contested claim)
- Some techniques are too coarse (quanta of 5 minutes or more = useless for rectification)
— PVNR"The most reliable way is to look at the events. If you can make sense of things, the chart is right. If you can't, the chart is not right."
Navamsa Window
- Navamsa lagna stays in one sign for ~14 minutes
- Dasamsa lagna stays in one sign for ~10 minutes
- Siddhamsa (D24) for ~4 minutes
- Using multiple divisional charts, you can progressively narrow the birth time window
Rectification strategy: check which event correlates with which Navamsa lagna → if it can't be explained in one lagna, shift to adjacent sign
Student Chart Case Study
Events to Reconcile
- Marriage: 1997 (Saturn Antardasha in Rahu Mahadasha)
- Divorce proceedings: 2004 (Venus Antardasha)
Navamsa Lagna Analysis
Original Navamsa (Aries lagna):
- Venus = 2L + 7L from Aries → owns house of family and spouse
- Venus + Mars (LL) together = Raj Yoga (trikona lord + kendra lord)
- Venus Antardasha → would give marriage, not divorce
- Cannot explain divorce in Venus AD → time must be wrong
Rectified Navamsa (Pisces lagna, ~3 minutes earlier):
- Venus = 3L + 8L from Pisces → functional malefic (owns house of instability, 8H = mrityu)
- Venus + Mars together → Mars is 2L + 9L (benefic), Venus is 3L + 8L (malefic); Venus spoiling Mars's dharma
- Venus AD → 8L energy = divorce proceeding ✓
Saturn AD Giving Marriage (Pisces Navamsa)
- UL (Upapada Lagna) is in Taurus
- Saturn in Taurus = in UL (UL shows the actual marriage ceremony, the formal getting-married event)
- Saturn + Venus parivartana: Saturn acts as if Venus is placed in Taurus (Venus's own sign), in UL
- Saturn as Yogakaraka (parivartana gives it Venus's benefic result) → can give marriage ✓
- 3rd house placement (from lagna) = initiative in dharma → marriage = dharmic initiative ✓
— PVNR"UL (Upapada Lagna) shows when the marriage ceremony/getting-married event tangibly manifests. A7 shows the actual ongoing marriage bond. 7th house shows the real internal relationship."
Key Navamsa Distinctions
| Parameter | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 7th house from Lagna | Actual quality of the marital relationship (internal truth) |
| 7th house from AL | How people perceive the marriage |
| A7 (Upapada's pair) | The tangible bond — the marriage itself that people can point to |
| UL (Upapada Lagna) | The actual ceremony / formal wedding event |
| 8th house from 7th | Second marriage; break from first |
Important houses for divorce (in Navamsa):
- 6th house: quarrels and fights in marriage
- 8th house: instability, break, death of the relationship
Mercury's Role — 4L and 7L in 8th House
- From Pisces lagna: Mercury = 4L (sukha, comfort) + 7L (marriage)
- Mercury placed in 8H → marital happiness is unstable; 8H = instability/mrityu of marriage
- Remedy: pray to Mercury's deity = Vishnu → read Vishnu Sahasranama on Wednesdays
Second and Third Marriage (Navamsa)
— PVNR"This is not a classical dictum — it came through tradition, teacher to student. But it seems to work in practice."
- First marriage: 7th house in Navamsa (Virgo from Pisces lagna)
- Break of first: 2nd from 7th = 8th house (Libra)
- Second marriage: 8th from 7th = Aries
- Break of second: 2nd from Aries = Taurus
- Third marriage: 8th from Aries = Scorpio
For the student's chart:
- Second marriage = Aries → Mars is the lord, placed in 11H from Aries (house of gains) = better placement than Mercury
- Second wife: Mars in kendra (exalted in Capricorn) from Aries → aggressive, dynamic, commanding person
- Likely second marriage in Mars Mahadasha
— PVNR"Overall marital happiness is from the 7th house and 4th house in Navamsa. If both are weak, overall happiness is limited, even in subsequent marriages."
Deva/Manushya/Rakshasa Classification
- Navamsa can also show the type of Dharma the person follows:
- Deva dharma: giving, compassion, kindness (dharma of the gods)
- Manushya dharma: balanced, in-between
- Rakshasa dharma: selfish, aggressive, destroying (dharma of demons)
D10 Career Analysis (Student's Chart)
Dasamsa Lagna
- Lagna changed from Sagittarius to Scorpio when Navamsa was rectified (because Rashi lagna itself shifted — Navamsa/Dasamsa borders don't overlap except at sign boundaries)
- D10 Lagna: Aries
Three Levels for Career
| Parameter | What it shows | Student's chart |
|---|---|---|
| 10th house from Lagna (D10) | Internal reality — what you actually do, your karma | Saturn (10L) in 3H → routine, disciplined work; does it as duty, not joy |
| 10th from AL | Image — how people perceive your work | Mars + Rahu in 10H from AL → electronics, high-tech, aggressive use of modern technology |
| A10 (10th Arudha) | Tangible job — the actual profession | Mercury in 8H (Scorpio) → secretive, high-tech software engineering |
Mercury as 6L — Artha Trikona Link
— PVNR"When you want to see somebody's career, don't look just at the 10th house. 6th house is the obstacles you overcome, 2nd house is the resources you employ. If you find links between all three (2, 6, 10), you can confidently say things."
- Mercury (6L from Aries) has Argala on 10H and aspects 2H → links all three Artha Trikonas → Mercury shows the career
- Mercury = analysis → software/analytical career confirmed
Rahu in 10H from AL — Brahma Amsha
— PVNR"Brahma shows downward direction — digging, digging, going deeper, dividing further. It is a Rajasic approach to understanding. It shows research — finding things not by spiritually rising but by going down."
- Rahu in Brahma Amsha in 10H from AL → people perceive him as a researcher, someone digging into protocols, specifications
- Mars in Varuna Amsha → persistence; also Varuna = western direction = abroad/foreign involvement
D60 of Career Planets
| Planet | D60 Amsha | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Mars | Hardra (tender) | Good, auspicious karma from past lives |
| Rahu | Chandra Moksha | Positive |
| Mercury | Sitalam (cool) | Positive |
All career-related planets carry good D60 karma → confirmed positive career trajectory
