BPHS Chapter 87 — Krishna Chaturdashi Birth: 6-Part Analysis

The class itself falls on a Krishna Chaturdashi.

The Six Parts

Unlike Amavasya, the whole of Krishna Chaturdashi is not inauspicious in the same way. Divide the tithi into six parts — roughly four hours each:

• "Kills" need not be literal: it gives a lot of suffering to that relative.
• A student asks whether the six parts apply to muhurta as well, where Krishna Chaturdashi is avoided. PVNR: "I would think so," though Parashara does not say it. If you must use the tithi, take the auspicious first sixth; in general it is not a good day to start things.

How to Find the Part

Jagannatha Hora shows the percentage of the tithi left at birth. 100 ÷ 6 = 16.67.

Worked in class:

• PVNR's own birth — April 4, 1970, 17:47:13 IST. Krishna Chaturdashi, 85.9999% left → 1st part. "I was born in the first. So for me no shanti was done."
• 28.3% left → a student says second; it is the second from the end = 5th part, vaṁśa-nāśana.
• The moment of the class, 52.13% left → just above 50, so the 3rd part. A child born then: some problem to the mother; do the shanti and take care of her.

A dosha can be overridden by blessings elsewhere in the chart. Check whether the relative named by the part is in fact suffering; if so the dosha is working, and the shanti should be done.

Shanti for Krishna Chaturdashi Birth (Parts 2–6)

Parashara says prayatnataḥ — do it with great effort.

Step 1: Shiva Idol

• Chaturdashi is Shiva's favourite tithi, so the remedy is puja of Shiva.
• A beautiful idol with one karsha of gold (an old measure), or half, or a quarter — yathā-vittam, as your means allow. If you can afford a large gold idol, make it. If not, copper with a little gold.
• Bāla-chandra-kirīṭa: crescent Moon on the head.
• Śveta-mālyāmbara: white clothes and a garland of white flowers.
• Trinetra: three eyes.
• Vṛṣāsīna: seated on the bull.
• Varābhaya-kara: one hand granting boons, one in Abhaya mudra ("I am here, don't worry").

Step 2: Puja and Avahana

• Puja with Tryambakam yajāmahe.
• A priest who is tattva-vit — who understands the meaning behind the mantra, not just the words — does avahana with the Varuna mantras Imam me Varuna and Tat tvā yāmi, and the Rig Veda Agni mantras Tvam no Agne and Sa tvam no.
• A kalasha is again set in the Agneya (southeast) corner.
• Recite the Ā no bhadrāḥ sukta, the Bhadrā Agneḥ sukta, the Purusha Sukta and the Kad Rudrāya mantra.

Step 3: Abhishekam of Shiva and Graha Puja

• Abhishekam of the idol. The substance is not specified — milk, panchamrita or fruit juices; PVNR suggests milk.
• Puja of the nine grahas; each graha's mantra at least 28 times.

Step 4: Homa

• Materials: samidhs, ghee (ājya), charu, sesame (tila), urad dal (māṣa) and mustard seeds (sarṣapa).
• Samidhs from ashwattha, plaksha, palasha and khadira. Where those trees do not grow, approximate.
• Each mantra 108 or 28 times. With the Purusha Sukta, offer after each verse.
• Then special oblations of sesame with the Tryambaka mantra, and graha homa done by the rules.

Step 5: Abhishekam of the Child, Feeding Brahmanas

• Abhishekam of the newborn with the parents, by a mantra-vit — a brahmin who knows the mantras. Leave it to the priest, not to friends.
• Feed brahmanas yathā-śakti, as a sudhīḥ — with a pleasant heart, not counting the cost or grudging what is left on the plate.
• Done this way, the dosha of Krishna Chaturdashi birth is relieved.

Dasha Seed Strength Comparison (Vimshottari Variants)

The question comes up while reading the 1968 chart of Part 7: for the suffering or death of the native or of a family member, must the normal Vimshottari always be used?

• A student answers that the variants are never used. PVNR: for timing the death of the native, father, mother or a brother, Utpanna, Kshema and Adhana Vimshottari can work better than the normal one — when they are applicable.
• Test: Jagannatha Hora's Vimshottari seed strength comparison. Count the planets in quadrants (kendras) from each seed. The seed with the most planets is the strongest.
• For all general results in life, still use the normal (Janma) Vimshottari. Use the stronger variant only for death.

"In my experience, they work better as Ayur dashas. As Phalita dasha, you give weight to the normal Vimshottari."

The 1968 Chart

Janma is the strongest, so the normal Vimshottari stands. "We did this exercise for no use basically." Had Janma shown 2 and Kshema 5, Kshema Vimshottari would have been used for death.

In the chart: Moon is in Virgo with Mercury, Jupiter and Ketu, and Saturn and Rahu are in the 7th from it — five planets in kendras from the Moon.

PVNR adds that he does not usually check the variants, but it is a good idea to check.
