Bhava Chakra — Revised Understanding (PVNR's Position)

A practicals class. The students bring written questions on the Bhava Chakra idea the teacher had posted on the Yahoo group; he summarises it first, then answers them.

Core Claim

• So far the class took the whole sign holding lagna as the 1st bhava, the next sign as the 2nd, and so on.
• The revision: the reference point (lagna, a special lagna, or a planet) is the starting point of the 1st house. The next 30° is the 1st house, the 30° after that the 2nd, and so on. The last 30° behind the reference is the 12th.
• He calls it "a radical departure from tradition" and "a work in progress", but an improvement on whole-sign houses, tested on many charts over a few years. It applies to natal, Tithi Pravesha and every other chart.

"It's not basically the whole sign containing planet. It's not plus-minus 15 degrees. Starting from where the planet is, the next 30 degrees is 1st house."

Traditional vs Revised Approach

The Western and KP systems are the precedent: houses are unequal there, but lagna is the beginning of the 1st house. "It is not that we are the first to do it."

Evidence from Parashara

1. A bhava across two signs

• One verse in BPHS says what to do "when a bhava extends across two signs". So Parashara allows a bhava to lie in more than one sign.

2. Bhava koshthas and Sudarshana Chakra

• Parashara says to find the houses planets occupy from each special lagna (Bhava Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghati Lagna) and to draw a separate bhava koshtha for each.
• For Sudarshana Chakra he says: draw three concentric circles, divide into 12, and show the planets in the 12 houses from Lagna, Moon and Sun.
• If a house were just a sign, one rasi chart with the lagnas marked would do; you could count from any point. The instruction to draw separate charts suggests a bhava is something other than counting signs.

3. The chapter that quantifies aspects

• Parashara grades a planet's aspect by exact longitude: full at 180°, zero at 210°, half at 240°, graded in between.
• He first states the rule by houses: all planets have a partial aspect on certain houses; Mars has full aspect on the 4th and 8th, Jupiter on the 5th and 9th.
• Then, in the formula, the correction for Mars is applied over 90°–120° from Mars (raised by a quarter), and for Jupiter over 120°–150° from Jupiter.
• So he is taking 90°–120° from Mars as the 4th house from Mars, and 120°–150° from Jupiter as the 5th from Jupiter. That fixes the scheme: 0°–30° from the planet is the 1st house, 30°–60° the 2nd, 60°–90° the 3rd, 90°–120° the 4th … 180°–210° the 7th, 210°–240° the 8th, 330°–360° the 12th.
• Parashara gives no separate way of finding houses from lagna or the special lagnas, so the same method applies to every reference.

4. Visible and invisible halves

• Śāstra says houses 1–6 are invisible (below the horizon) and 7–12 visible.
• Lagna is on the eastern horizon. Counting 180° on from lagna's longitude is exactly the half under the horizon.
• If the whole sign is the 1st house, part of the 1st house is above the horizon and part below. With lagna ± 15°, half of the 1st house is visible and half of the 7th is invisible. Both contradict the rule.

"That also corroborates that lagna must be the starting point of the 1st house, not the middle or somewhere in the 1st house."

Lord of a Bhava

Student's question: how do you determine the lord of the 1st bhava?

• A house may lie in two signs. The entry point of the house controls it, like the one guarding the door controls the room.
• The lord of the sign holding lagna is the 1st lord. Lagna + 30° is the entry to the 2nd house; the lord of the sign that point falls in is the 2nd lord. So the house lords are the same as before.
• The same from any reference: Mars at 26° Aries → 1st lord from Mars is Mars, 2nd lord is Venus.
• Even with lagna at 29° Aries, Mars is the 1st lord. But planets in the Taurus part of the 1st house have Venus as dispositor, so Venus influences the 1st house through them.

"Mars is the 1st house lord. He is guarding this room, but several people who are in this room, they may be paying their rent to Venus. So they will listen to Venus."

Practical Rule — How to Apply

1. Take the longitude (degrees within the sign) of the reference — Lagna, Moon, Sun, Mars, Hora Lagna, etc.
2. A planet whose degrees are above the reference's degrees is in the same house as the rasi count shows.
3. A planet whose degrees are below the reference's degrees goes back one house.
4. A house position either stays as before or drops by one. Nothing else is possible. The later in its sign the reference is, the more planets shift.

Example: Lagna at 18° Aquarius. A planet in Aries above 18° is in the 3rd house. A planet at 12° Aries is in the 2nd house.

• The default Bhava Chakra is the one from lagna. The others have no names in Parashara; call them "Bhava Chakra from HL", "from GL", "from Mars".
• Nothing changes in what the references mean: Moon for mind, Sun for father and power, Venus as lagna for marriage and vehicles, Ghati Lagna for power, Hora Lagna for money. Only the reckoning of the houses is refined.
• Longitude-based (graha) aspects do not change either; one just has to look at the actual longitudes instead of saying "Saturn in Taurus aspects planets in Cancer".

Implications

Ashtakavarga: May be imperfect. If Saturn is 95° from Mars but in the 3rd sign from Mars, Ashtakavarga today takes him in the 3rd house from Mars. By Parashara's own definition he is in the 4th.

Transit murti (svarṇa, rajata, tāmra, loha): Today everyone with Moon in Kumbha takes Saturn as entering the 8th when he enters Kanya, so all get the same murti. With Moon at 28°30' Kumbha, Saturn enters the 8th house only at 28°30' Kanya. Taking the murti at that moment "made more sense in many cases". Two people of the same rasi can have Saturn in the 7th and the 8th at the same time, and different murtis.

Mahapurusha Yoga tightens: The planet must be in its own or exaltation sign AND in a kendra, and the kendra is now by bhava. Jupiter at 10° Sagittarius with lagna at 20° Virgo is in the 3rd house: no Mahapurusha yoga. (How strong the yoga is still depends on the planet's strength.)

Yogas in general: Student: if a yoga is seen in the rasi chart and annulled in the bhava chart? No yoga is defined in the rasi chart. Yogas are defined by bhavas, so the Bhava Chakra decides.

Divisional charts: Parashara speaks of houses, aspects, moolatrikona and exaltation in the divisional charts, so the same has to be done there. Use the divisional longitude of the reference and of the planets. A varga lagna runs through its 30° very fast, and as it advances one planet after another drops back a house. That can be used for rectification: "this planet's daśā gave a job, so it must be in this house, not the previous one".

What Does NOT Change

• The meaning of the houses and of the kāraka lagnas
• The house lords
• Exaltation / debilitation: defined by sign → Rasi Chakra
• Rasi dṛṣṭi: sign-based → Rasi Chakra
• Argala is house-based → see it in the Bhava Chakra

Rasi Chakra vs Bhava Chakra

"Bhava Chakra shows which house a planet is in and Rasi Chakra shows which sign physically it occupies. So you can't really compare."

• The rasi chart (and Navamsa, Hora, Drekkana…) only says which sign a planet occupies, who its dispositor is and what its rasi aspects are.
• Parashara's readings are of the kind "2nd lord in the 3rd house", "4th lord in the 8th house". Results are by house, so for interpretation the Bhava Chakra matters most.
• A Bhava Chakra has no Cancer or Leo in it, only houses 1 to 12. Showing a planet "moved back a sign" in the rasi diagram is only a convenience of drawing.
• Example: Scorpio lagna late in the sign, Saturn in Aries at a lower degree. Saturn is still in Aries, debilitated, in a sign of Mars. He is in the 5th house, whose lord is Jupiter. He has not moved to Pisces.
• If the longitudes are written on the rasi chart, the Bhava Chakra can be read off it; no separate drawing is needed.

Bhava Chakra is not "what you perceive" or "what you desire": A student quotes websites that say the rasi chart is what you have and the bhava chart is what you want. Some people read that into the word bhāva. Parashara never assigns one purpose to the rasi chart and another to the bhava chart. The 4th house is the mother or vehicle you have, not the one you want. Perception is seen from the Arudhas, not from the Bhava Chakra.

How Sure He Is

"This is one of the things that has sanction of Parashara, sanction of tradition… This is very logical compared to what we do, plus-minus 15 or whole rasi."

He asks students to try it on known charts. He also says plainly that the Jyotish known today is "a dim light", imperfect, and this is one refinement.
