Bhava Chakra Revised (PVNR): Lagna = START of 1st House (Not Middle); Parashara's 4 Proofs — Aspect Degrees (Mars 4H = 90-120°), Bhava Spanning 2 Signs, Visible/Invisible Rule, Sudarshan Chakra; Bhava ≠ Rasi: Yogas Use Bhava, Exaltation Uses Rasi
PVNR presents a revised Bhava Chakra: "Lagna is the BEGINNING of the 1st house; the next 30° is the 1st house; then 2nd house, etc." — distinct from whole-sign where lagna falls anywhere within the first house. Four evidences from Parashara: (1) Aspect quantification: "90–120° from Mars = 4th house; 120–150° from Jupiter = 5th house" — if whole-sign were intended, 95° from Mars would still be 3rd sign; Parashara says 4th = counting from planet's longitude in 30° intervals. (2) "Bhava spanning two signs" — Parashara explicitly says "in case a bhava extends across two signs" = only possible if house boundaries are set by longitude from lagna, not by sign boundaries. (3) Visible/invisible rule: tradition says houses 1-6 = invisible (below horizon), 7-12 = visible; this is physically correct ONLY if lagna is the START of 1st house; in whole-sign, part of 1st house would be above horizon (contradiction). (4) Sudarshan Chakra: "make 3 concentric circles, divide into 12, place planets by house from Lagna/Moon/Sun" — separate chart implies house ≠ sign. Practical rule: planets with longitude BELOW lagna longitude → move to previous house (affects only planets near sign-change boundaries above the lagna degree). Implications: Ashtakavarga — "Saturn in 3rd from Mars" should use longitude (90-120° = 4th); Mahapurusha Yoga tightens (planet must be in Kendra per Bhava, not just Kendra sign); transit Murti depends on exact Moon degree within Rasi, not just the Rasi. Critical distinction: "Rasi Chakra = which sign physically contains the planet (exaltation, Rasi aspects, dispositor). Bhava Chakra = which house (yoga results, house-lord-in-house readings, argala). All Parashara's results — '2nd lord in 3rd gives this' — are about Bhava, not Rasi. Exaltation/debilitation = sign-based, Rasi only. Argala = house-based, Bhava only."
"Parashara says: the 4th house from Mars is between 90 and 120 degrees from Mars. The 5th house from Jupiter is between 120 and 150 degrees from Jupiter. This is counting from the planet's exact longitude, not from sign beginnings. And he says: "in case a bhava spans two signs" — that is only possible if bhavas are determined by longitude, not by signs. Lagna is the start of the first house."

Bhava Chakra — Revised Understanding (PVNR's Position)
Core Claim
PVNR presents a revised interpretation of Bhava Chakra that he considers a significant improvement over traditional whole-sign house systems. This is presented as a work in progress and "radical departure from tradition," but grounded in Parashara's own text.
Traditional vs Revised Approach
| Approach | 1st House Definition |
|---|---|
| Whole sign (most Parashari) | Entire sign containing Lagna |
| Plus-minus 15° (some teachers) | Lagna ± 15° = 1st house |
| KP (Krishnamurti) | Lagna = start of 1st; Placidus division |
| PVNR revised | Lagna = start of 1st; next 30° = 1st house |
Evidence from Parashara
1. Aspect quantification chapter:
- Parashara says 90°–120° from Mars = 4th house from Mars
- 120°–150° from Jupiter = 5th house from Jupiter
- This means: starting from the planet's exact longitude, the next 30° = 1st house, 30–60° = 2nd, 60–90° = 3rd, 90–120° = 4th, etc.
- If "whole sign" were intended, 95° from Mars would still be 3rd sign (not 4th house); the text specifically says 4th — so Parashara is counting from the planet's longitude, not from sign beginnings
2. Bhavas extending across two signs:
- Parashara explicitly says: "In case a Bhava extends across two signs..." — this is only possible if house boundaries are determined by longitude from lagna, not by sign boundaries
3. Visible / Invisible halves:
- Tradition says: 1st–6th houses = invisible (below horizon); 7th–12th houses = visible (above horizon)
- This is physically correct ONLY if Lagna is the START of the 1st house
- If Lagna is in the middle of a sign (whole sign system), part of the 1st house would be above horizon and part below — contradicting the invisible/visible rule
4. Sudarshan Chakra:
- Parashara says: make 3 concentric circles, divide into 12, place planets by their house from Lagna / Moon / Sun respectively
- The fact that a separate chart must be drawn implies house counting is not trivially the same as sign assignment
Practical Rule — How to Apply
- Find the exact longitude of the reference (Lagna, Moon, Sun, Mars, Hora Lagna, etc.)
- Any planet whose longitude is above (greater than) the reference longitude → same house as indicated by Rasi
- Any planet whose longitude is below (less than) the reference longitude → move back one house (previous sign)
- Only affects planets near sign-change boundaries; no change for planets well within a sign above the reference degree
Example (from lesson): Lagna = 18° Aquarius. Planet in Aries at 12° → below 18°, so pushed back to the previous sign → now in 2nd house (Pisces), not 3rd house (Aries).
Implications
Ashtakavarga: May be imperfect. When we say "Saturn in 3rd house from Mars" but Saturn is actually at 95° from Mars (= 4th house by Parashara's rule), the Ashtakavarga bindu assignment may be wrong.
Transit Murti: Traditionally, all Kumbha Rasi people get the same murti when Saturn transits Virgo. But if Moon is at 28.5° Aquarius, Saturn only truly enters the 8th house when he reaches 28.5° Virgo. Different Moon degrees within Kumbha → different murtis, even in the same transit.
Mahapurusha Yoga condition tightens: Planet must be in Moolatrikona or own sign AND in a Kendra — but Kendra is now determined by Bhava Chakra, not Rasi. A planet in Sagittarius at 10° may actually be in 3rd house (not Kendra) if Lagna is at Virgo 20° → no Mahapurusha.
Western astrology analogy: Placidus, Porphyry, Sripati, and KP all take Lagna as the beginning of the 1st house. Not PVNR's invention — precedent exists.
What Does NOT Change
- The meaning of houses (1st house = self, 2nd = resources, etc.)
- The use of Karaka Lagnas (Hora Lagna for money, Ghati Lagna for power, Bhava Lagna)
- Exaltation / debilitation: these are sign-based → see in Rasi Chakra
- Rasi aspects (Rashi Drishti): sign-based → see in Rasi Chakra
- Argala: house-based → should be seen in Bhava Chakra
Rasi Chakra vs Bhava Chakra
— PVNR"Bhava Chakra is a different thing. Bhava Chakra shows which house a planet is in. Rasi Chakra shows which sign physically it occupies. You can't really compare."
- Rasi Chakra = shows which sign contains each planet (exaltation, rasi aspects, dispositor)
- Bhava Chakra = shows which house each planet occupies (house lordship, yoga determination, results)
- All yoga results, house-lord-in-house readings are based on Bhava Chakra, not Rasi Chakra
- Parashara's readings ("2nd lord in 3rd house → this result") are ALL about Bhava, not Rasi
