Case Study 2 — Marriage Delayed: the Navāṁśa

Background

• Brought by a student. The chart was seen in class twice before, in 2007 and 2009. In 2009 the class said she would marry in 2011. She is still waiting.
• She is 31. Her younger sister is getting married next month. The family is worried.
• Questions: what is the chance of marriage in the near future, and are there remedies?
• The teacher: whatever other events are known, the main question is in the navāṁśa.

Saturn — the 7th Lord in the 12th

• Vimśottarī: Saturn mahādaśā is running.
• In the navāṁśa (Leo lagna) Saturn is the 6th and 7th lord. The 6th is a malefic house; the 7th is neutral for malefics. Overall slightly malefic.
• As lord of the 7th, the house of the matter, he can give marriage.
• He is in the 12th house (Cancer) — losses, compromise. A student adds: any planet in the 12th, for marriage, gives a stingy marriage.
• Worse: he is afflicted by Mars and Rāhu, both with him in Cancer.
  • Mars is the 9th lord and yogakāraka for Leo. Mars with Saturn alone would not be so bad. But Mars is debilitated and afflicted by Rāhu. Such a Mars afflicts Saturn.
  • Rāhu is the co-lord of the 7th (Aquarius). Saturn with Rāhu alone would not be a big problem.
  • The problem: Saturn is hemmed between Mars and Rāhu, Mars on one side and Rāhu on the other. Saturn is close to Rāhu.
• Consolation: Mars and Rāhu, and Mars and Saturn, are not too close.
• There is a parivartana between Moon (in Aquarius) and Saturn (in Cancer).

Sun — the Lagna Lord Is the Main Weakness

• Lagna lord Sun and 7th lord Saturn are in samasaptaka (graha dṛṣṭi, the 7th aspect) — but on the 6th–12th axis.
• The Sun is:
  • in a dusthāna, the 6th house;
  • in an inimical sign, Capricorn;
  • aspected by his dispositor Saturn, who is his enemy;
  • with Ketu — eclipsed. For Sun and Moon, affliction by the nodes is not good.
• Distance in the navāṁśa: Sun at 10°, the nodes at 23°. Thirteen degrees. Not a close eclipse.

"This is an overcomeable problem. Had they been very close, had it been a very close eclipse, then that would have been very difficult."

• If the lagna lord is very weak in a chart, the rest of the things may or may not flower.

"If you look at the weaknesses of the chart, more than the Saturn-Mars-Rahu combination in the 12th house, the main weakness is the weakness of the lagna lord."

Venus as Lagna — Kāraka Lagna

• Lagna, Moon and Sun can all be taken as lagna. The main kāraka taken as lagna is even more important — Sun for father, Moon for mother, Venus for marriage.
• Venus is exalted in the 8th house (Pisces). Take Pisces as lagna:
  • Lagna lord Jupiter is in the 8th (Libra), an inimical sign. The 8th lord Venus is in lagna. A parivartana between lagna lord and 8th lord. The lagna lord is again in a dusthāna, as from the natal navāṁśa lagna.
  • The 7th lord Mercury is in the 6th (Leo). The 7th lord is again in a dusthāna.
• So there are restrictions from here too.
• But more than the Jupiter–Venus parivartana, more than the 7th lord from Venus in the 6th, the Sun is the weakest point.

"The lagna lord Sun's weakness is the main problem in this chart. That may be the one that is actually blocking the whole thing."

Chaturaśīti-sama Daśā — Can the Running Periods Give Marriage?

Why This Daśā

• Before timing, the teacher checks whether a conditional daśā applies. One does.
• In the rāśi chart the 10th lord Mercury is exalted in the 10th house (Virgo). 10th lord in the 10th: use Chaturaśīti-sama daśā instead of Vimśottarī.
• It is counted from the Moon of the rāśi chart.

Mahādaśā — Mercury

• Rāśi: Mercury is the 7th lord, in his own house.
• Navāṁśa: he is in lagna, and he is the 7th lord from Venus.
• But in lagna he is a malefic for Leo. And as 7th lord from Venus he is in the 6th from Venus.
• Not a straightforward planet. He can give problems. He can give marriage with propitiation.

Antardaśā — Jupiter

• Rāśi: Jupiter is the lagna lord, aspecting the 7th house (graha dṛṣṭi, the 9th aspect from Libra on Gemini). He is a neutral planet here, slightly benefic. Any benefic aspecting the 7th can give marriage.
• From the daśā lord Mercury: Jupiter is the 7th lord in the 2nd house of family.
• Navāṁśa: Jupiter is the 5th and 8th lord. The 5th is benefic, the 8th neutral — a benefic for Leo lagna. He aspects the 7th house (the 5th aspect from Libra on Aquarius). He is the dispositor of Venus.
• From the daśā lagna Mercury in the navāṁśa: Jupiter is in a kāma trikoṇa (the 3rd) and aspects the 7th.
• Jupiter is in an inimical sign in the navāṁśa. The teacher: do not worry about it; worship the Sun, that takes care of it.

Conclusion: on the daśā there is a chance of marriage in the next year and a half. Because the chart has afflictions, propitiation is needed.

Transits and Stationary Transits — Fixing the Window

Ordinary Transits of Saturn, Rāhu and Jupiter

• Saturn is transiting the janma rāśi, Libra. She is in sāḍe-sātī. Rāhu will also come onto the natal Moon.
• The next couple of years will not be pleasant: anxiety and tension. She should make daily prayer a habit.
• A student: but we said marriage in the next year and a half. The teacher: yes.

"Marriage doesn't mean all your problems are over and they live happily ever after. That can be the beginning of your trouble."

• Jupiter is in Taurus, the 8th from the Moon. He will move to Gemini — the 9th from the Moon, a good transit, and the 7th from the natal lagna.
• Counted from the natal navāṁśa lagna Leo, Jupiter in Gemini is in the 11th and aspects the 7th.
• So Jupiter in Gemini, from about May 2013, has potential.

The Technique — Stationary Transits

• In Jagannatha Hora: make a chart for today's date in a second window. Mundane tab → select the planet → "after" → the stationary transit button. Press again for the next station.
• A slow planet — Jupiter or Saturn — becomes stationary. If from there it conjoins or aspects some natal point very closely, an important event related to that point happens around that time.
• The natal point can be in the rāśi chart or a divisional chart. Any planet, any house cusp.
• How close: within 2°, 3°, maybe 4°. At 8° or 9°, forget it.
• The teacher has experimented with many techniques over the years. This one does not show every event, but it has been consistent.

"If you see that a slow-moving planet like Jupiter or Saturn becomes stationary and aspects some natal point very closely — either rasi or divisional chart, any house cusp or any planet — then some key event related to that point or that planet will happen during that time."

Why a Stationary Planet Is Powerful

• A moving planet conjoins and aspects points as it goes, and that triggers them. But it is in a hurry.
• A planet slowing down and turning around is focused, calm, relaxed.
• The analogy: a yogi who has meditated until no thoughts swirl in the mind opens his eyes and looks at you. His energy is focused on you. Something may happen.
• For Mercury, Venus and Mars it matters less — they become stationary so often.
• Jupiter and Saturn become stationary once or twice a year, and they cover a particular natal point only rarely. Take an important longitude — the 7th lord's D-9 longitude, the 6th lord's D-7 longitude. Neither Jupiter nor Saturn may ever aspect it within 2° while stationary. It is not guaranteed to happen. So when it does, there is a good chance that something will happen.

Jupiter Stationary — January 30, 2013, 12°17' Taurus

• Jupiter stops being retrograde and turns direct.
• From 12°17' Taurus he aspects the navāṁśa Sun at 10°04' Capricorn (the 9th aspect). About 2°.
• The lagna lord of the navāṁśa is aspected closely by Jupiter. Marriage is possible around then, plus or minus a few weeks.

Jupiter Stationary — November 2013, 26°30' Gemini

• From 26° Gemini he aspects 26° Libra, 26° Sagittarius and 26° Aquarius.
• No natal navāṁśa position is there. A student suggests Venus; Venus is at 9° Pisces and is not aspected.
• Nothing of interest. So although Jupiter in Gemini looked better than Jupiter in Taurus on the ordinary transit, it is in Taurus that his aspect on the Sun becomes exact at a station. February 2013 looks better.

Saturn Stationary — February 18, 2013, 17°28' Libra

• Saturn is checked because he is the 7th lord of the natal navāṁśa.
• From 17°28' Libra look at 17°28' Libra, Aries (7th aspect), Sagittarius (3rd aspect) and Cancer (10th aspect).
• In the rāśi chart the lagna and the Moon are also close to these points. But go to the navāṁśa.
• Natal navāṁśa Saturn is at about 17°20' Cancer. Transit Saturn's 10th aspect falls on him — within 18 arc-minutes, the teacher says.
• Saturn is the natal 7th lord of the navāṁśa and the running Vimśottarī mahādaśā lord. Stationary, he looks at himself.

"That is far more interesting than Jupiter aspecting the lagna lord Sun. That was a minor point. This is actually a major point."

Window: February 18, plus or minus two to three weeks. In the January–February 2013 time frame there is a very strong chance of marriage.

"If the basic weakness in the natal chart can be overcome, the transits and the dashas are actually quite conducive."

Remedies

For the Sun — Āditya Hṛdayam

• The remedy follows the main weakness: the Sun.
• Chant Āditya Hṛdayam three times every day, as a habit.
• For the January–February window: chant it "like a mad person" — not three times but as many times as fit in a budget of an hour or two each day, with the saṅkalpa of getting married.
• The Sun matters in this chart in several ways:
  • Navāṁśa: the lagna lord, and the block to marriage.
  • Rāśi: the 9th lord of dharma, debilitated, with the lagna lord Jupiter. Marriage is for dharma.
  • D-10: the 5th lord in the 10th. Good for career.

Ruby?

• A student asks about gems. The teacher is not keen. The conventional theory is that a ruby helps a weak Sun. He is not 100% sure.

"It is better to just pray."

For Sāḍe-sātī and Rāhu on the Moon

• Saturn and Rāhu will be hammering the janma rāśi for two years.
• In addition to Āditya Hṛdayam: something for Durgā — Chaṇḍī Kavacham, Durgā Saptaślokī.

Homam, and the Saturn–Mars–Rāhu Combination

• A student asks whether a homam can be done.
• For the Sun: a homam with Āditya Hṛdayam.
• Saturn is the other key planet. Saturn with Mars and Rāhu in the navāṁśa can show Chaṇḍī, Chāmuṇḍā, Kālī. A simple Chaṇḍī homam, or a homam with the Navārṇa mantra.
• These are fierce deities. People may be concerned and may not be ready for that.
• The other option for the Saturn–Mars–Rāhu combination: Hanumān. Mars shows Hanumān — a warrior. Saturn with Mars also shows Hanumān.
• The objection: he is a brahmachārī, how can he give marriage?

"He basically got Rama and Sita together when they were separated."

• Any simple homam will also do, with one of the easy mantras or stotras in the homam manuals on the teacher's website.
• But the window is a few months away. By the time she is comfortable managing the fire, the period will be over. If she is not already inclined to homam: just chant.
• Asked to choose between Āditya Hṛdayam and the Chaṇḍī mantra: Āditya Hṛdayam. She can supplement it with the Navārṇa mantra if she wants.

"Because Navamsa is the area of problem and Sun is the main weakness in the chart, Aditya Hridayam is very important."

• The student had earlier advised her to fast on Saturdays, giving the Upapada as the reason. The teacher: a good idea. For him the Sun is the key, more than Saturn.

Chara Kārakas — Ātmakāraka and Dārakāraka in Ṣaṣṭhāṣṭaka

• Ātmakāraka: Venus. Dārakāraka: Jupiter.
• Ātmakāraka is your soul. Dārakāraka is the partner.
• In the navāṁśa, AK and DK should be well placed from each other. In ṣaṣṭhāṣṭaka (6th–8th) or dvirdvādaśa (2nd–12th) it is not good.
• Rāśi: Jupiter is in the sign 12th from Venus. By longitude he is in the 11th house from Venus. Not bad.
• Navāṁśa: Jupiter is in the 8th from Venus. That holds by longitude also.
• In the chart of marriage, AK and DK are in ṣaṣṭhāṣṭaka.

"That shows the soul rejecting marriage, rejecting partner, not really needing a partner. Even if there are no other weaknesses, that itself can stop somebody from getting married."

• Nothing can be done about it, and there is no remedy for it. Ignore it for the purpose of the remedy.
• What it means: even after marriage there may be some distance at the soul level between her and her husband.
• There is no point in telling the person this.
• The teacher returns to his finding: more than the weakness of the 7th lord Saturn in the navāṁśa, the weakness and affliction of the lagna lord Sun is the key detrimental factor.

A Scar on the Face — Read from the Rāśi Chart

A student asks: why the surgery on the face? She has a big, noticeable scar. When it happened is not known.

Appearance — Lagna and Lagna Lord

• A scar on the face means the overall appearance has an undesirable feature. Appearance is lagna. So look for a weakness in lagna or the lagna lord.
• The student: but she is very good-looking.
• Lagna lord Jupiter is in the 11th house, in a sign of Venus (Libra), with two friends (Sun and Moon). The lagna lord is strong.
• No planet aspects lagna. Lagna is strong. So she is good-looking overall.
• Afflictions: lagna contains Māndi and Gulika. And the lagna lord is with the 8th lord Moon.
• If the 6th lord or the 8th lord associates with the lagna lord, it can show surgery, or something affecting the health or the appearance.
• This may have come in Jupiter's or Moon's period.
• Jupiter and Moon are friends and there is a distance between them. So not a major health problem, not a major surgery.
• A student suggests a transit caused it. The teacher: for a transit to bring surgery on the face, there has to be an affliction of the lagna or lagna lord in the chart first.

The Face — the 2nd House

• Head is lagna. The 2nd house is the face. The 3rd is the throat.
• The 2nd house contains Ketu, the 12th lord (co-lord of Scorpio).
• 12th lord Ketu in the 2nd house: a scar or bad mark on the face is possible.
• Count the houses from the lagna, not from the natural zodiac.

Where Serious Treatment Can Be Needed — 8th Lord and 6th Lord

• For the 8th lord, see the sign he occupies. The 8th lord Moon is in Libra: kidneys, uterus. A problem needing an operation can come there.
• For the 6th lord, see the house he occupies from lagna. The 6th lord Venus is in the 12th: feet.
• These are the areas where health problems requiring serious treatment can come.
