BPHS Ch.24 — 11th Lord in Houses 1–3: Sattvic + Wealthy + Equal Vision (1H), All Wealth + Philanthropic + Fighter for Dharma (2H), Master of Skills + Stomach Problems (3H) & Why 3rd/6th/11th Lords Are Binding (Functional Malefics)

11th Lord in the First House

Verse 121: sāttvika; dhanavān (wealthy); sukhī (happy); sama-dṛṣṭi (equal vision); kavi (poet); vāgmī (eloquent); sadā lābha-samanvita (always endowed with gains).

• Sāttvika — not the guṇa. The ruling guṇa of a person cannot be told from which lord sits in lagna; if the 11th lord is Mars it will not be sattva. Parāśara means good-natured, soft, gentle.
  • The 11th is the house of friends and of friendliness. Its lord in lagna controls the basic nature, so the person comes across as friendly and is liked.
  • He may be friendly because he wants something from people. That is not sattva in the strict sense — but he is seen as soft and gentle, and he keeps adding friends.
  • The 11th lord is a functional malefic whoever he is, Jupiter or Mars. The result still holds.
• Sukhī — contentment, not cars. Sukha is seen from the 4th house (mother, education, house, vehicles, luxuries, and the heart) and from lagna (the basic sense of self). The lord of fulfilment of desires in lagna means the feeling "whatever I wanted has happened" runs the person. He is contented.
• Sama-dṛṣṭi — balanced, not thrown by praise or insult. The 5th is the house of emotions and emotional stability. From the 5th house, this planet is the 7th lord placed in the 9th. A quadrant lord in a trine is a good placement, so the emotions are steady, without extremes.
• Kavi, vāgmī. The 3rd is the house of communication; artful communication and poetry are 3rd house more than 2nd (the 2nd is plain speaking). From the 3rd house, this planet is the 9th lord placed in the 11th. The 9th from any house protects it; here the protector of communication sits in the house of fulfilment.
  • Do not tell everyone with this placement that he is a poet. He may or may not be. He will have clarity of expression.
  • Vāgmī is not one who talks a lot; it is one who expresses himself well.
• Sadā lābha. The lord of gains is in a quadrant that is also a trine — well placed. Desires get fulfilled.
• Dhanavān — taken up again, properly. Profits are a flow; wealth (dhana) is what is accumulated, and that is the 2nd house. A student objected: lagna is the 12th from the 2nd, so he will get and spend, not accumulate.
  • From the 2nd house this planet is the 10th lord in the 12th. The 10th is action: his agenda is to put the wealth to work — spend it on a purpose, buy, invest. He sits in the house of giving off.
  • The 12th from the 2nd is not a bad house for wealth. "Who can spend his wealth? Only one who has wealth can spend wealth." Lagna and the 2nd are both good houses for showing wealth.
  • So he is wealthy, and he keeps the wealth in circulation instead of watching a bank balance.

11th Lord in the Second House

Verse 122: sarva-dhanānvita (all kinds of wealth); sarva-siddhi-yuta (all accomplishments); dātā (a giver); dhārmika; sukhī sadā (always happy).

The degree has gone up: the last verse said "wealthy", this one says "all kinds of wealth" — a person who has accumulated a lot.

• All kinds of wealth. Two houses matter for wealth, the 2nd and the 11th. The planet whose agenda is gains sits in the house of wealth itself: large profits, and the bank balance grows from them.
• All accomplishments. Accomplishment is the 11th house. Its lord is in a quadrant (the 4th) from it, and in the native's house of wealth. Desires are fulfilled and what they bring is kept.
• Dātā. From the 2nd house this planet is the 10th lord sitting in it — action on wealth: spending, investing, donating. Giving is then seen from two houses: the 12th (letting go — which can also be loss or theft) and the 9th (giving comes from a sense of dharma).
  • From the 12th house: he is the 12th lord in the 3rd — a Viparīta Rāja Yoga.
  • From the 9th house: he is the 3rd lord in the 6th — again a Viparīta Rāja Yoga.
  • A bad-house lord in another bad house is good, just as a quadrant lord in a trine is good. He gives in plenty.
• Dhārmika — and a fighter for dharma. From the 9th he is the 3rd lord of initiative and boldness in the 6th house of fighting. He does not only know right from wrong; when he sees the right thing he fights for it.
• Sukhī sadā.
  • The lord of fulfilment is in the 4th from the 11th: comfort drawn from his gains.
  • From the 4th house itself: he is the 8th lord, placed in the 11th from it. He has lābhārgala on the 4th house and argala on lagna.
  • Lagna and the 4th are the two houses of sukha and both are fortified. Some have luxuries without contentment, some contentment without luxuries. This person is likely to have both.

11th Lord in the Third House

Verse 123: kuśalaḥ sarva-karmasu (skilful in all work); dhanī; bhrātṛ-sukhopeta (happiness from siblings); śūla-roga-bhayaṁ kvacit (sometimes, fear of śūla — shooting, colic pain in the stomach; in plain terms, digestive trouble).

• Skilful in everything. The 5th is scholarship; the 3rd is skilfulness and initiative, and skill goes with initiative. From the 3rd house this planet is the 9th lord in lagna (in the 3rd itself). All 3rd-house matters are fortified: boldness, skills, communication, siblings.
• Happiness from siblings. Same reason.
• Dhanī. The 3rd is not a house of wealth. But the planet has dhanārgala on the 2nd house, and it sits in the bhāvāt bhāvam of the 2nd (2nd from 2nd). Any link between the 11th and the 2nd is good for wealth.
• Śūla-roga. Digestion is not the 2nd house. The 2nd is the mouth and the food taken in; the 3rd is the throat, the 4th the heart, the 5th the stomach. Digestion and everything of the stomach is the 5th.
  • A student took the 11th as lagna (lagna lord in the 5th). Rejected: "He is not saying there are shooting pains to his profits. There are shooting pains to his body." Take the 5th from lagna.
  • From the 5th house this planet is the 7th lord — a māraka — and it has argala on the 5th. A māraka for the stomach with a say over the stomach.

The rule drawn from it

"You take any body part, the 2nd and 7th lords when they are associated with that house — occupy that house or aspect that house or have argala on that house — they can give some problems in that house."

• Example: the 2nd house is the eyes. The 8th lord is the māraka (7th lord) for the 2nd. If it occupies, aspects or has argala on the 2nd, there can be eye trouble.
• The same placement can be read for the other 5th-house matter, emotional stability: at times he becomes disturbed.
• A student asked whether the 7th lord in the 11th (counted from the 5th) is so bad. It is one Kāma-trikoṇa lord in another; it can show full commitment. But digestion and emotional balance are things that should run smoothly. Where desire has to be pursued in such a matter, something is already wanting.
• A student pointed out that the 11th is also Hara-sthāna, the 6th from the 6th. PVNR agreed: the 11th lord can give trouble to the house it touches. With the 5th, one of the children may face some danger.

Why the 3rd, 6th and 11th Lords Are Functional Malefics

This came up under the 4th-house verse, from the students' questions.

• The 8th lord is not a functional malefic; he is neutral. The functional malefics are the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th.
• 3rd — desire at its root: initiative, boldly going after something. 6th — fighting for it. 11th — having to get it, the desire fulfilled at any cost.
• Some say these houses are not evil in Kali Yuga because Parāśara wrote for another yuga. PVNR calls that nonsense: "irrespective of what yuga you are talking about, these are the things that burn you."
• They are heavy-duty agendas. To do justice to them a planet depletes other resources — those of the house it sits in and of the planets it joins.
• An agenda of granting your desires is "a really terrible agenda", because wherever that planet sits there is a large dispersal of energy in that area of life.
• A student added that they also make you grow. Agreed: they deplete something and result in gain. Materially they can be called good houses.

"These are such heavy-duty, intensive houses — that is why these are evil houses. Not really evil, but these are houses that bind you."

• The trines — dharma, pūrva-puṇya, one's abilities — involve letting go. The houses whose lords are functional benefics do not bind. They do not guarantee liberation, but they help. To do justice to 3, 6 and 11 you have to bind yourself.
• This does not make the 11th lord or the 6th lord bad. It means he has an agenda:
  • the 3rd lord wants the person to take initiative, in whatever is available where he sits;
  • the 6th lord wants a fighter;
  • the 11th lord wants an achiever, one who gets what he wants.
