Mundane US Lunar New Year Chart 2005 & Ashtakavarga Introduction

US Lunar New Year chart (April 8, 2005): eclipse coincidence makes this chart especially significant. How to read mundane charts: Moon in the chart = the public's mood; 5H = ruling party; 7H = foreign relations. Ashtakavarga (AV) introduction: each planet casts a vote (+1 or 0) to each house from its position, creating an 8-planet map. AV score 0-4 = weak, 5-8 = strong. SAV (Sarvashtakavarga = total of all planets) shows overall strength of each house. AV is used to analyze strength of different social classes in mundane charts.

"Ashtakavarga shows how much support each area of life gets from all the planets together. A house with a high SAV score is naturally supported."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Mundane Astrology — US Lunar New Year Chart (April 8, 2005)

Chart: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada at Washington DC — April 8, 2005 at 4:32:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Lagna: Leo (Sun is LL)

Rasi Chart — Overall Assessment

  • Sun (LL) in 8th house → country will be full of anxiety; upheavals and changes
  • Rahu at last degree of Pisces (Gandanta) + Ketu at last degree of Virgo (Gandanta) → extremely inauspicious
  • Rahu in Gandanta = extremely stressed node; afflicting luminaries very powerfully
  • Rahu afflicting Sun + Moon → Lagna lord and Moon both weakened by Gandanta Rahu
  • Sun and Moon at 25° Pisces; Rahu at 29° Pisces = within 4° → very close affliction

Venus strong despite Sun-Moon weakness:

  • Normally Venus would be combust when with Sun; but here Rahu is with Venus, and Rahu fights back against Sun
  • Venus (10th lord) is stronger than Sun here; Venus is not weakened
  • Venus-led administration: 10th lord Venus = passionate administration; country's policies driven by passion not principle
  • Administration compromises country's ideals (LL Sun = country's character; being defeated by Venus)

"The country's ideals and principles may be compromised by very passionate administration during this year."

— PVNR

Conclusion: Not a pretty year for US; continued anxiety, administration passionate and at odds with the country's core character.

Navamsa — Foreign Policy

  • Venus + Rahu in 7H of Navamsa = more diplomacy (from previous lesson's analysis, confirmed here again)
  • Venus (exalted) + Rahu = both planets of diplomatic skill
  • More diplomatic engagement than the previous year

D-2 (Hora) — Financial Situation

  • 2nd lord Sun is in 9H (Hora chart) — better than Rasi chart placement
  • But Sun afflicted by Badhaka Venus and 8th lord Rahu
  • Overall: financially not great, but possibly better than the previous year (slight improvement)

D-10 (Dasamsa) — Political Activity

  • D-10 = political activity within the country; how the society responds to policies
  • Saturn + Ketu in Lagna of D-10 = Focus of national political activity = issues relating to Saturn's people (old age, downtrodden, working class) and Ketu's themes (spirituality, unconventional topics)
  • Social Security debate falls under Saturn's domain in D-10
  • Jupiter-Mars parivartana in D-10: Jupiterian matters (judiciary, religion) and Martian matters (war, aggression) are both active

Ashtakavarga (AV) — Introduction

Ashtakavarga is a systematic way of measuring the strength of different domains of life (different planets' qualities) by seeing how many other planets support each position.

Concept

Instead of just seeing planets from Lagna and Moon (which we normally do), Ashtakavarga asks: How do all 8 reference points (Lagna + 7 planets) view each house?

For each planet, you ask: "From this planet's perspective, which houses are auspicious?" And you count how many of the 8 reference points find a particular house auspicious.

Score scale: 0 = terrible → 4 = average → 8 = excellent

Two Types of AV

TypeNameDescription
Bhinna AshtakavargaIndividual AVOne chart for each of the 8 reference points (Lagna + 7 planets); shows quality of that planet's domain
Sarva Ashtakavarga (SAV)Combined AVSum of all 8 Bhinna AVs for each house; overall strength

SAV rules:

  • Houses 9H + 10H + 11H: if sum is above 40 → more focus and auspiciousness
  • If SAV > 30 for a house → good; < 25 → weak
  • Maximum possible SAV score per house = 64
  • For a TP (annual) chart: if 9H+10H+11H are strong in SAV → auspicious year

How Each Planet's AV Reveals Society Layers (for Mundane Charts)

PlanetWhat It Represents in SocietyWhat Its AV Shows
Saturn (Sa)Working class, blue-collar, downtrodden, laborQuality of working-class life; their jobs, wealth, initiative
Jupiter (Ju)Judiciary, educated class, religious leaders, teachers, upper stratumQuality of life for the elite/educated; legal system
Venus (Ve)Entertainment industry, artistsQuality of entertainment sector; their profits and work
Sun (Su)Political class, rulers, politiciansPolitical fights, dharma of politicians
Moon (Mo)Middle class, massesQuality of middle-class experience
Mercury (Me)Intelligentsia, media, scholarsLearning ability, media, communications sector
Mars (Ma)Police, military, initiativeBravery, initiative in defense

How to Read a Planet's AV in a Mundane Chart

  1. Take the planet as Lagna
  2. Look at each house from that planet
  3. Strong houses (score 6-8) = that quality thrives; weak houses (score 0-2) = that quality suffers

Example Analysis: Saturn's AV for US 2005 D-10 Chart

  • Saturn = blue-collar, working class, downtrodden
  • Strongest houses from Saturn: 6H (overcoming obstacles) and 11H (gains)
  • → Working class will have to work hard (6H) but can make some gains (11H)
  • Weakest house from Saturn: 2H (resources/savings)
  • Their bank balances will remain small; they may earn more (11H) but spend it; not accumulating wealth

Jupiter's AV comparison:

  • All scores above average for Jupiter = upper class/judiciary doing very well overall
  • Shows that the top stratum accumulates wealth and has good position in all areas

"If you combine everyone's wealth, that's the country's wealth. Saturn's 2H is weak, Jupiter's 2H is strong — reflecting the hierarchy in the society."

— PVNR

Venus's AV (entertainment):

  • 11H strongest (gains) and 10H second (work)
  • Entertainment industry has plenty of work and makes lot of money during the year

Sun's AV (political class):

  • 3H and 6H strong = political class is very active, fighting hard, no compromise
  • 12H weak = no compromise expected; everyone sticking to their positions
  • Conclusion: Deadlock in political establishment; lots of fighting, little bipartisan agreement

Important Rule from AV

"To see the functional behavior of a planet — take that planet as lagna and judge all houses from there (not from Arudha Lagna). Functional behavior is always from Lagna or the planet itself."

— PVNR
