Mundane Astrology — US Lunar New Year Chart (April 8, 2005)

Chart: the coming Lunar New Year at Washington, D.C. — April 8, 2005, 16:32:36 (4:32:36 PM) Eastern Daylight Time.

Lagna: Leo.

Rasi Chart — Overall Assessment

• Lagna lord Sun is in the 8th house, and the 8th is crowded. Many changes and upheavals in the country during the year; much tension and anxiety.
• Sun and Moon are at 25° Pisces. Rahu is in the last degree of Pisces, Ketu in the last degree of Virgo.
• Gandanta: the border between a watery sign and a fiery sign. One navamsa on either side of it is very inauspicious, the last degree most of all. Rahu at 29° Pisces is in gandanta. (PVNR says Ketu is in gandanta too; Ketu is at 29° Virgo, which is not a water–fire border.)
• This gandanta Rahu closely afflicts both luminaries — the lagna lord and the Moon.

Venus against the Sun:

• Mercury is in the same sign but far away. Venus is very close to the Sun.
• Normally, when Venus is with Sun and Moon, it is Venus who becomes weak. Here Rahu is with Venus. So Venus is strong, and Sun and Moon are weakened by Venus — the Sun especially.
• Venus is the 3rd and 10th lord. The strong 10th lord is fighting the lagna lord.
• It is not strictly a graha yuddha, but the Sun is defeated by Venus with the help of gandanta Rahu.
• The 10th lord is the administration: it will be passionate like Venus. Lagna lord is the character of the country. That character is compromised.
• The previous year also had Leo rising, Sun in the 8th and Venus as 10th lord. The administration continues to be passionate.
• Venus is with Rahu, so there can be diplomacy also — seen in Navamsa.

Navamsa — Foreign Relations

• Venus and Rahu are in the 7th house of Navamsa, the house of relations with foreign countries.
• As said in the previous class: more diplomacy during the year.
• Rahu is the primary karaka of diplomacy; Venus is the secondary one.

D-2 (Hora) — Finances

• The 2nd house is the house of resources.
• In PVNR's Hora chart the 2nd lord Sun is in the 9th house — a good placement, unlike in the Rasi chart.
• But he is afflicted by the badhaka Venus and the 8th lord Rahu. Both Moon and Sun, lagna lord and 2nd lord, are afflicted by Rahu and Venus.
• Financially not a great year, but possibly better than the last.
• These lordships are those of a Cancer-lagna Hora chart with Sun, Moon, Venus and Rahu in Pisces. The site's Hora chart uses a different Hora scheme and shows other placements.

D-10 (Dasamsa) — Activity Within the Country

For a person D-10 is the chart of karma. For a country it is the political activity within the country — and wider than politics: media coverage, everything that is on people's minds.

The lunar New Year chart shows things from the people's perspective — Moon is the people, Sun is the king. It shows what the society makes of the focus the leaders set. • D-10 lagna is Aquarius. Mars and Jupiter, the 2nd and 10th lords, have a parivartana — activity and resources exchange. Mars is aggression, Jupiter is peace.
• The planets tied to the 10th house set the main focus of the year's activity: Martian matters (war) and Jupiterian matters (religious matters, the right-wing agendas).
• Social Security: Saturn shows the downtrodden and old people. Saturn is in lagna with Ketu. Lord of the 12th as well, but he is in lagna. So the people shown by Saturn and Ketu are the focus of the country's policy this year, with much debate about them.
• Whether the policies are good or bad for them is a separate question. Take Saturn as lagna and see how many planets cooperate with him. That is Ashtakavarga.

Ashtakavarga (AV) — Introduction

Concept

• Instead of counting houses only from lagna or from Moon, count houses from each planet.
• The 2nd from Saturn is the resources of the downtrodden; the 3rd from Saturn their initiative; the 10th from Saturn their karma.
• The 2nd from Jupiter is the wealth of the religious, learned and wise people. The 3rd from Mars is the initiative of the police and the military.
• How a score is made: there are rules for where each planet must be, counted from the planet in question, to favour a given house from it. (Jupiter with Saturn may be bad; Jupiter in the 12th from Saturn may be good.) For each sign you count how many references are favourable — say, for the 2nd from Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury favourable and the rest not.
• Scale: 0 to 8. 0 is terrible, 4 is average, 8 is superb.

Bhinna and Sarva Ashtakavarga

• "Ashtakavarga" = eight-based group. The eight references are lagna and the seven planets.
• The eight separate charts are the Bhinna Ashtakavargas.
• Combining the scores of all eight gives the Sarva Ashtakavarga: the overall strength of a house.
• The overall 2nd house is the 2nd from lagna, from Sun, from Moon, from Saturn and so on. If all are strong, the overall 2nd is strong.

"If you combine the wealth of everybody, that is the country's wealth. If you combine everybody's initiative, that is the country's initiative."

It applies to a person's chart too

• Jupiter is the wisdom within you. Houses from Jupiter show attributes of that wisdom: the dharma it follows, its increase during a year, its initiative in controlling the rest of you.
• Moon is your internal peace.
• Mercury is your learning ability (in a country's chart, the intelligentsia).

The classes of society (mundane charts)

Reading the Ashtakavarga of the D-10 of the US 2005 chart

The D-10 is used because the question is domestic policy and its impact on society (foreign policy is from Navamsa). The fact that Saturn and Ketu are in D-10 lagna says who the debate is about; the Ashtakavarga says whether the policies are good for them.

Saturn — the downtrodden, blue-collar workers:

• Strongest: the 6th (overcoming obstacles) and the 11th (gains). They will have to work very hard, and when they do there are some gains.
• Weakest: the 2nd (resources). The 11th is the paycheck; the 2nd is the bank balance. They may earn more but spend it. Their bank balances stay small.
• The 10th from Saturn scores only 2: much unemployment. Many who need a job may be without one.

Jupiter — judiciary, teachers, the religious / right wing (Jupiter is in Scorpio):

• Strongest: the 3rd (bravery, initiative). The judiciary and the religious wing will be extremely active and bold.
• All scores are above average.
• Take anything of the downtrodden and it is usually small in magnitude; for the upper stratum everything comes in abundance, whichever house. Jupiter's twelve scores add up to more than Saturn's. That reflects the hierarchy in society.

Venus — the entertainment industry:

• Strongest: the 11th (gains). Second: the 10th (work). Plenty of work and a lot of gain.
• Wealth is high too (a score of 6): much of the money is kept, not spent. Large profits.
• Hardly any obstacles to overcome. The 6th is the house of obstacles; the 8th is the house of anxiety.

Sun — the political class:

• The 3rd and 6th are strong: bravery and fighting. Nobody gives up; everyone pushes his own vision. Bitter political fighting.
• The 9th, 10th and 11th are also strong: dharma, work to do, gains to make.
• The 2nd is weak: not a great year for increasing their wealth.
• The 12th is weak. The 12th is the house of compromise. With initiative and fighting strong and compromise weak, nobody gives in.

"During this year, the political classes will not be willing to make any compromise. Everybody will stick to their guns."

• Some laws will pass, but there will be much fighting, deadlock and little harmony in the political establishment.

What this reading covers: only the D-10 Ashtakavarga, so strictly the impact of the government's policies. Whether the downtrodden will in fact be employed is not settled by it. It says the policies work against their employment, wealth and benefit, and let the entertainment industry stay busy and accumulate money.

Sarva Ashtakavarga — score guide

• The most a house can score in the Sarva Ashtakavarga is 64 (eight charts, up to 8 points each).
• Below 25 — weak. Above 30 — good.
• Above 40 — that house gets more focus.
• In an annual (Tithi Pravesha) chart, strong Sarva Ashtakavarga scores in the 9th, 10th and 11th houses mark an auspicious year.
• The functional behaviour of a planet is judged from lagna, not from Arudha Lagna.
