D10 Career, Retrograde Planets & D20 Vimsamsa Spiritual Progress

Dasamsa (D10) career analysis for Subbalakshmi: how the D10 shows seva-based performance rather than commercial music. Arudha Lagna in D10 = public image of the career — how the world sees you professionally. Retrograde planets as past-life blessings: a retrograde planet is strongly motivated to fulfill its significations from a previous life — it carries extra karmic weight. D20 (Vimsamsa) for spiritual progress: which divisional houses show the level of spiritual attainment and the specific deity being worshipped.

"If a planet is retrograde, it is basically like a blessing because you will mostly get what the planet denotes."

Dasamsa (D-10) Analysis

What D-10 Shows

The Dasamsa is the chart of activities in society — your karma in the public world. Most people know a public figure not personally but through their work, their concerts, their media coverage. So the image we have of public figures is formed by their D-10.

PVNR explains this beautifully:

  • Her parents know her through D-12 (Dvadasamsa)
  • Her husband knows her through D-9 (Navamsa) and D-1
  • Her spiritual associates know her through D-20 (Vimsamsa)
  • We — the public — know her through D-10 (Dasamsa)

Saturn + Ketu in D-10 Lagna (Cancer)

The same Saturn and Ketu that give Tapasya Yoga in the Rasi are in the D-10 lagna.

  • Saturn = hardworking, disciplined
  • Ketu = spiritual, detached
  • This reflects her true nature in her karma: a dynamic, detached, spiritual hard worker with inner fire, even if she comes across to us as gentle and humble

Lagna-11H Parivartana (Mars and Saturn)

  • D-10 Lagna lord (Mars) and 11L (Saturn) are in parivartana (mutual exchange)
  • Parivartana between lagna and 11H = Dhan Yoga in the context of career
  • What this means in D-10: She will have all the resources she needs to do her karma

PVNR's explanation of "resources": "Money is nothing but resources. It's not just paper or plastic. 2nd house and 11th house — when you say 2nd shows what you have and 11th shows what you are getting, you are talking in terms of resources." So this parivartana gives her:

  1. Many contacts, many friends, large circle of people
  2. All resources needed (financial, social, logistical) to pursue her career
  3. Gainful engagement in her work

Sun in 2H of D-10 — Political Connections

  • 2H in Dasamsa = resources for career activities
  • Sun in 2H of D-10 = political connections as a resource
  • This is not about her using politics for manipulation — it means political connections were available to her and she used them as resources for her work
  • Example in her life: She sang at the United Nations (very rare opportunity), she received the Bharat Ratna — these came partly through political connections that she and her husband enjoyed

4L-9L Parivartana (Moon and Jupiter) — Dharma + Satisfaction

  • 4H (Cancer) lord = Moon; 9H (Sagittarius) lord = Jupiter
  • Moon is in 9H and Jupiter is in 4H → parivartana between 4L and 9L
  • 4L = Kendra lord; 9L = Trikona lord → Kendra-Trikona Raj Yoga
  • 4H = comfort, satisfaction, direction; 9H = dharma
  • Result: She gets happiness and satisfaction from doing her dharma, and her dharma gives her comfort in return. These two things are deeply united for her. Following the right path (dharma) and feeling at peace (sukha) are the same experience for her.
  • Very sattvic planets (Moon and Jupiter) are involved → this is a truly noble exchange

Arudha Lagna in D-10 — Public Image

PVNR says to look at the AL (Arudha Lagna) in the Dasamsa to see how the public perceives someone through their work.

  • AL in D-10 is in Sagittarius, with Moon occupying it
  • Moon = no enemies; easy-going; sweet-mannered; creative; sees the good in everyone
  • Sagittarius = very sattvic, very righteous, very principled, very dharmic
  • Jupiter also acting from his parivartana position = very pious, learned, peaceful

"Moon has no enemies. All planets have enemies, but Moon doesn't consider anybody an enemy. Moon is very easygoing, very happy-go-lucky type."

— PVNR
  • No negative planets (Rahu, Saturn, Mars) aspecting or influencing AL in D-10
  • This means: Her public reputation will NEVER have a blemish. Zero negative image. Unblemished forever.

Retrograde Planets — Philosophy and Correct Understanding

PVNR addresses a common misunderstanding when a student asks about Jupiter being retrograde in the D-10.

What Retrograde Actually Means

  • Some people treat retrograde as a weakness or even equivalent to debilitation. This is wrong.
  • Retrogression = strong unfulfilled desire from past life relating to what that planet represents in this chart
  • Whatever the planet signifies: you worked on it in a previous life, but you did not complete it, or you were not fully satisfied with what you accomplished. So you came back in this life with a strong unfinished drive.
  • Result: You will put extra effort in that area of life. Even when difficulties arise, you will not give up.

Why Some Consider It Bad

  1. With strong desire comes testing — the universe tests you to see how serious you are
  2. It won't come easily — there may be obstacles
  3. If a Kendra lord (quadrant lord) is retrograde, the effort in achievements (kendra matters) is extra hard because quadrant = effort itself

Why PVNR Says It's a Blessing

  • "This is a blessing. If a planet is retrograde, it is basically like a blessing because you will mostly get what the planet denotes."

    — PVNR
  • The "unfinished job from past life will mostly get completed" — this is the karmic purpose of retrograde
  • Strong desire + effort + divine blessing from the incompleteness = eventual fulfillment
  • Critical point: NOT equivalent to debilitation (do not confuse — exalted AND retrograde = debilitation; but simply retrograde in a normal sign = more effort, same result eventually)

Application to Subbalakshmi's Jupiter (D-10)

  • Jupiter retrograde in D-10 = she came with strong desire to serve God through her karma from past life
  • Jupiter = 9L in D-10 = the blessings brought from past lives in the area of career-dharma
  • He gives her great blessings from past lives for her karma: those blessings are active and she will fulfill them

Vimsamsa (D-20) — Spiritual Progress

What D-20 Shows

  • D-20 is the chart of spiritual progress — not just "what pujas do you do" but how far your soul is actually progressing toward God
  • It is the chart of your spiritual evolution in this lifetime
  • PVNR says: "Whatever she did, she did for God. She did not do for money, she did not do for fame, she did not want anything in return. She just did it because it gave her happiness. She did it as a service to God."

Key Houses in D-20

  • 5H in Vimsamsa = devotion and mantras. The ability you bring to spiritual progress is your devotion. Devotion alone is the ability needed to progress spiritually.
  • 9H in Vimsamsa = organized religion and dharma. After finding God within, you have a responsibility to spread that message in the world. 9H = following religion's forms and structures; sharing truth with other souls.
  • Lagna in D-20 = the strength of your spiritual life force itself

The distinction: A person can have strong lagna and strong 5H in D-20 but weak 9H → they are very devoted privately but don't follow organized religion. They have genuine spiritual experience but don't participate in formal religious structures.

In Subbalakshmi's case, both 5H and 9H are engaged → she is genuinely devoted AND she follows dharma publicly, participates in organized religion, and spreads the message.

Her D-20 Raj Yoga

  • D-20 Lagna = Taurus; Lagna lord Venus is in the 9H axis
  • Venus (LL) + Mercury (5L) are together, and they are aspected by Saturn (9L + 10L for Taurus lagna)
  • Saturn in D-20 is the Yogakaraka — 9L and 10L together = Dharma-Karma lord
  • This triple combination: Lagna lord + 5th lord + 9th lord + 10th lord all in Raj Yoga = great spiritual Raj Yoga
  • Meaning: She makes tremendous spiritual progress through her work (10H = work; 9H = dharma; 5H = devotion; LL = her very existence)
  • Her work IS her spiritual practice. They are the same thing for her.
