Dasamsa (D-10) Analysis

The Dasamsa shows one's activities in society. D-10 lagna is Aries.

Saturn and Ketu in Lagna

• Saturn makes one hardworking. Ketu is the planet of spirituality and detachment.
• These are the same Saturn and Ketu that give Tapasya Yoga in the Rasi chart. In D-10 they sit in lagna. That is auspicious.

Her true nature in her work, from this lagna:

• Aries, owned by Mars — a dynamic person.
• Saturn — hardworking. Ketu — detached. Ketu is also 8th lord here.
• "A detached spiritual person who works hard and who is also very dynamic, very enterprising."
• It may not come across. She comes across as humble, sweet, dharmic. But there is a lot of fire inside her to do something in society.

Lagna–11th Parivartana (Mars and Saturn)

• Lagna lord Mars is in Aquarius (11th). 11th lord Saturn is in Aries (lagna). They exchange signs: Mars acts as if he is in Aries, Saturn as if he is in the 11th.
• The 11th in Dasamsa shows gains from the career, the friends you make, the people you know, the close circle.
• The 11th lord is counted a malefic, yet the exchange between lagna and 11th is auspicious. It is not an exchange between lagna and a dusthana. It is a Dhana Yoga.

What a Dhana Yoga means in D-10 — this is not the chart of money:

"She will be endowed with resources needed for her karma. Money is nothing but resources. It's not just a paper or plastic."

• When you say the 2nd shows what you have and the 11th shows what you are getting, you are talking in terms of resources, not purely dollars, rupees, gold or silver.
• Such a person knows a lot of people, has a lot of friends, can engage gainfully in her karma, and has every resource she needs for it. She may also make money from it.

Sun in the 2nd — Political Connections

• The 2nd is the house of resources. In anybody's Dasamsa, look at the planets in the 2nd to see what kind of resources they have.
• Sun is in Taurus, the 2nd. "He just missed being exalted."
• Sun in the 2nd of Dasamsa: for all the activities the person does in society there will be political connections, and they will be very useful. PVNR is not saying she misused them — only that they were there and were used.
• She sang at the United Nations when she was around fifty. She got the Bharat Ratna. Her work got exposure because of the political connections she and her husband enjoyed.

4th–9th Parivartana (Moon and Jupiter)

Students spot it:

• 4th house Cancer is owned by Moon. Moon is in Sagittarius, the 9th.
• 9th house Sagittarius is owned by Jupiter. Jupiter is in Cancer, the 4th.
• A student says "I would say it is a Raj Yoga". PVNR: you don't have to "say so" — it is one. If a quadrant lord and a trine lord are together, aspecting each other, or in parivartana, it is a Raj Yoga. Parashara said so.

What this one gives:

• 4th = comforts, happiness, direction. 9th = dharma.
• The planets are Moon and Jupiter, both very sattvic.
• She gets satisfaction and happiness from doing her dharma, and the reverse. Following her dharma and feeling at ease are together for her.

A Method: Rasi Lord Read in the Division

Given later in the class, while reading D-7:

• For the kind of career a person has, take the 10th lord of the Rasi chart and see how strong he is in the Dasamsa.
• For overall happiness with children, take the 5th lord of the Rasi chart and see how strong he is in the Saptamsa.
• For the strength of dharma, take the 9th lord of the Rasi chart — "that is the physical dharma" — and see how strong he is in the Navamsa and how the other planets cooperate with him there.

Arudha Lagna in D-10 — Public Image

A student asks whether it matters that Jupiter is lord of the Arudha Lagna in D-10. PVNR: irrelevant to retrogression, but it opens the next point — the image she has in society.

Who Knows Her Through Which Chart

• Her husband knows her through the Navamsa and the Rasi.
• Her parents know her through the Dwadasamsa (D-12).
• Her friends know her through Rasi, Navamsa and perhaps Dasamsa.
• Her spiritual associates, the people at the temple she visits, know her through the Vimsamsa (D-20).
• We know her through her concerts, cassettes and newspaper coverage — through her Dasamsa. Our image of her is the Arudha Lagna in Dasamsa.

AL in Sagittarius With Moon

• AL in D-10 is in Sagittarius. Moon occupies it, and through the parivartana he also acts like Jupiter there.
• Moon: a creative, nice person with no enemies. Sweet, gentle manner.

"Moon has no enemies. All planets have enemies, but Moon doesn't consider anybody an enemy. Moon is very easygoing, very happy-go-lucky type."

• Acting as Jupiter: very dharmic, very learned, pious, peaceful.
• Sagittarius: sattvic, and more than sattvic — righteous, principled. (Why, see Part 9.)
• Her image is of somebody very dharmic, righteous and principled.

Malefics on the Arudha Lagna

• If Rahu, Saturn or Mars aspects the Arudha Lagna, it is bad. At one point or another the person's image goes through something negative — "even though he may be a great saint".
• Here no such planet influences the AL in Dasamsa.
• "Will she ever have any blemish? Zero blemish. Totally unblemished reputation."

Retrograde Planets — Philosophy and Correct Understanding

A student asks: Jupiter is retrograde — does that change the parivartana reading in D-10?

• No. And a retrograde planet is retrograde everywhere, not only in the Dasamsa.
• The student suggests retrogression weakens the planet. PVNR: "No, no, no, that's not true." There are classics which say a retrograde planet is strong and has a lot of cheshta bala.

What Retrogression Means

• For whatever the planet shows in this chart, there is a strong desire from the last life, or the last several lives.
• You wanted to do something in a past life and did not do it, or did not do it fully, or were not satisfied with what you did.
• So there is a natural inclination to finish it now.

Effort

• It is not a weakness. It means you put extra effort into whatever that planet shows.
• With a planet that is not retrograde you may try and give up. With a retrograde planet, even if other factors bring trouble in that area, you will not give up. The desire behind it is too strong.
• Some people read this as negative because you have to work hard. But whether you have to work hard does not come from the retrogression. It comes from other factors.

"This is a blessing. If a planet is retrograde, it is basically like a blessing because you will mostly get what the planet denotes."

Why Some Call It Bad — Testing

• You come with a strong desire and an unfinished job. So there will be some test relating to that planet. It will not come very easily.
• A retrograde quadrant lord is worse, because quadrants are your effort.
• If the planet owns a trine, it comes more easily.

Her Jupiter

• In the Rasi chart Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord. There it is not good.
• In the Dasamsa Jupiter is simply the 9th lord. He shows the blessings you come with in this life as far as karma is concerned. Retrogression does not matter there, and he will not give much trouble as far as career goes.
• Jupiter gives her great blessings from the past life for her work.

Vimsamsa (D-20) — Spiritual Progress

Taught before the Dasamsa in the class, and for a reason: her career was more a spiritual progress than a formal career or a job.

"Whatever she did, she did for God. She did not do for money, she did not do for fame, she did not want anything, she did not expect anything in return. She just did it because it gave her happiness. She did it as a service to God."

She did not think she was a great person. She kept her humility and compassion and saw everybody as a form of God.

What D-20 Shows

The Vimsamsa is the chart of spirituality. It is not simply the chart of the pujas you do — that is one aspect. It is the chart of the progress you make as a spiritual being in this life.

Her D-20 Raj Yoga

• D-20 lagna is Taurus. Start with lagna and its lord.
• Lagna lord Venus is in the 9th house (Capricorn), conjoined with Mercury, the 5th lord.
• Saturn aspects them from Cancer, the 3rd, with his 7th aspect. Saturn is the Yogakaraka for Taurus lagna — 9th and 10th lord.
• For anybody born in Taurus lagna, Venus, Mercury and Saturn together or aspecting each other on one axis is a great Raj Yoga: lagna lord, 5th lord, 9th lord and 10th lord all involved. "A terrific Raj Yoga."

Meaning: she makes a lot of spiritual progress through her work. Saturn, the 9th and 10th lord, is the key.

5th and 9th Houses in Vimsamsa

• 5th house = devotion, and the mantras you follow. The 5th is the house of abilities, and the ability you have for spiritual progress is your devotion. "Your devotion alone is your ability. That is the only ability that you need in order to progress spiritually."
• 9th house = dharma, and organised religion. Understanding the God within you is good. You also have a dharma to give that message to the other souls in the world.

How they combine:

• A weak 9th — Rahu in the 9th, or the 9th lord in the 8th — the person may not follow any religion at all.
• If lagna and the 5th are still strong, that person is very devoted to the cause of finding God. If lagna is strong, they may find God.
• Strong lagna and 5th with a very weak 9th: no belief in organised religion, yet a graceful person.

She is both. Lagna lord and 5th lord are conjoined — her devotion is genuine. They sit in the 9th — the devotion is applied to dharma. She follows religion and the standard procedures and rituals of society.

PVNR: given how devoted she was, the Vimsamsa "seems reasonable".

Sagittarius vs Pisces — Jupiter's Signs Explained

Taught while reading the Arudha Lagna of D-10, which is in Sagittarius.

Both signs are owned by Jupiter. Both are sattvic. There is a difference.

Pisces

• Relaxed, peaceful. The sign of a Maharshi.
• Jupiter in Pisces is like a Brahmin relaxed at his house doing his puja.

Sagittarius

• A fiery sign — Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the three signs of agni tattva. Sattvic, and still fiery.
• The natural 9th house: with Aries as lagna of the Kalapurusha, Sagittarius is the 9th. It is dharma — the fiery part of dharma, upholding it.
• Jupiter in Sagittarius is like a raja-purohita, the royal priest, doing his duty. It is his Moolatrikona.

"Upholding dharma sometimes may have to be aggressive. That is why it is fiery sign."

Sagittarius is the sign of dharma. Pisces is the sign of the Maharshi.

The Moolatrikona Analogy

• Own sign — somebody relaxed at his own house.
• Moolatrikona — a person at his work, duty-minded. The sign where the planet acts from his duty, his job.
• Exaltation — somebody at his favourite party.

Jupiter's Moolatrikona is Sagittarius because he feels duty-minded there, and that is because it is a fiery sign.
