BPHS Chapter 24 — 9th Lord in Houses 7–9 and the A9 Rule

9th Lord in 7th House (verse 103)

Verse: dāra-yogāt sukhodayaḥ; guṇavān kīrtimān — happiness arises through marriage; virtuous; famous.

• Marriage brings fortune. The marriage itself is blessed. But the teacher reads sukhodaya as closer to bhāgyodaya: not a new car after the wedding, but life as a whole going better. The lord of fortune sits in the house of marriage, so marriage is what unlocks his luck.
• Virtuous (guṇavān). Character is seen first from the 9th house (the sense of dharma, of right and wrong), then from lagna (the nature of the person). Here the 9th lord is in the 7th house of dealing with people, so he brings his dharma into his dealings. He is in a kendra and aspects lagna, so it shapes his basic nature.
• Famous (kīrtimān). Fame is seen from the 5th and the 10th. With the 9th lord in the 7th, A9 falls in the 5th house of following. A9 is the tangible manifestation of one's fortune — the things that make people say "how lucky he is". In the 5th, people think him lucky for the following and reputation he has.

The A9 (Bhāgyapada) Rule

• A9 is a very auspicious ārūḍha pada. It shows the articles of your luck.
• Whichever house it falls in, people see you as lucky in the matters of that house.

"Whichever house it is in, you will be seen to be lucky with respect to those matters."

9th Lord in 8th House (verse 104)

Verse: bhāgyahīno naro bhavet; jyeṣṭha-bhrātṛ-sukhaṁ naiva — unfortunate; no happiness from elder brothers.

• Unfortunate. The 9th lord is in the 12th from the 9th.
• No happiness from elder siblings. Parāśara says jyeṣṭha — elder — specifically, not any sibling.
  • Elder siblings are the 11th house.
  • Bhāvāt bhāvam: the house as far from a house as that house is from lagna is important for judging it. For longevity, the 8th from the 8th is the 3rd. For elder siblings, the 11th from the 11th is the 9th.
  • So the 9th house shows fortune with respect to elder siblings. Its lord is in the 8th house of setbacks, anxieties and deprivation.
  • There may be no elder siblings at all, or no happiness from them.

9th Lord in 9th House (verse 105)

Verse: bahu-bhāgya-samanvitaḥ; guṇa-saundarya-sampannaḥ; sahajebhyaḥ sukhaṁ bahu — many kinds of fortune; virtuous and good-looking; much happiness from siblings.

• Highly fortunate. The lord of any house in its own house is very good; a trine lord in his own trine is better still.
• Virtuous. The 9th is the house of dharma and its lord is at home.
• Good-looking. Looks are seen from lagna. The 9th lord in the 9th protects lagna: the constitution, health and looks of the person are protected.
• Happy with siblings — the verse says sahaja, so younger siblings too, not only elder:
  • Elder: the bhāvāt bhāvam of the 11th is the 9th, and its lord is in it.
  • Younger: taking the 3rd house as lagna, this planet is the 7th lord in the 7th. The 7th from the 3rd is interaction with siblings. He deals with them a lot — an active relationship.
  • A9 falls in the 6th house from lagna, which is the 4th from the 3rd: happiness and comfort with siblings, and the comfort of the siblings.

A9 in the 6th: a dusthāna does not matter

• This is A9 in the 6th, not the 9th lord in the 6th. Whether the house is good or bad is irrelevant; what matters is that A9 is there.
• The 6th is the house of having enemies and crushing them. With A9 there, people say "what a lucky person" about how his fights go. He may have no enemies; or the enemy coming to fight him meets with an accident on the way; or a big lawsuit ends in a mistrial and the judge says there is no case. He does not even have to fight.
• The 6th is also uncles; he is lucky with respect to them too.
• Lord versus ārūḍha. The 9th lord's agenda is to give fortune, but he must act within the limits of the house he is in — in the 6th he may have to fight for it. An ārūḍha is different: A9 is the tangible article of fortune.
• A student asks whether this should be counted from ārūḍha lagna. The 6th from lagna is the fight he actually puts up; the 4th from lagna the happiness he actually has. The 6th and 4th from ārūḍha lagna are how well he fights and how happy he is in people's opinion. A9 in the 6th from lagna means: with respect to the fight he is actually putting up, people call him lucky.
