Jupiter Dasha in the Rasi Chart

Vimshottari: Jupiter dasha runs till 2018, when he is 26. Bachelor's and master's fall in it, so Jupiter decides the education. Jupiter–Venus begins in April 2010; he enters college in fall 2010.

• From lagna: Jupiter is 2nd and 11th lord — a malefic for Aquarius — in the 7th house (Leo), a quadrant, aspecting lagna.
• From Mercury, karaka of learning: Jupiter is 6th and 9th lord, a mixed planet. By longitude he is in the 1st house from Mercury (see "Karaka as Lagna" below): basic intelligence in learning is there, but not in full.
• As 6th lord he brings obstacles, as 9th lord protection. This is the verse read in Part 1: the two tend to cancel; see which is stronger.

Chaturvimsamsa (D-24) — Education

D-24 lagna: Cancer, at the very beginning of the sign (a slightly earlier time gives Gemini). Because the lagna is on the cusp, the whole sign is taken as the house here.

Venus, the 4th lord, in lagna:

• Well placed: lagna is a quadrant and a trine.
• Cancer is a neutral sign for him. Moon is his natural enemy but a temporary friend here (Moon is in the next sign, Gemini). Cancer is a fruitful, sattvik sign; Venus is reasonably strong.
• Graha drishti on him: Saturn (7th and 8th lord) from Capricorn, full. Rahu from Sagittarius, 8th aspect, three-quarters. Mercury's 10th aspect is only a quarter; ignore it.
• Rahu is the other 8th lord. Both 8th lords aspect the 4th lord in lagna. There is some problem.

Lagna lord Moon in the 12th: not good for education — unless the education is in a foreign land. He has already left his motherland. The 12th explains it.

2nd lord Sun in the 8th (a student's observation): Sun periods can bring tests. The 2nd lord in the 8th is very good for occult study; Sun and Mars there are both fiery planets. There is a chance he learns astrology.

Jupiter, the dasha lord:

• 6th and 9th lord again. In the 3rd house — his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. He is weak.
• He aspects his own 9th house (Pisces) with full aspect and his 6th (Sagittarius) with three-quarters. The aspect on the 9th is the stronger one, and the 9th is the bachelor's degree. He protects it.
• An average dasha, not a superb one. The positive outweighs the negative.

Karaka as Lagna — Houses from the Planet's Longitude

Parashara said the karaka can be seen as lagna. For learning the karaka is Mercury.

How the houses are counted (the teacher's own position, from his reading of Parashara's definition of aspects — Mars aspects the 4th house from him, defined as 90° to 120°):

• The planet's longitude is the start of the 1st house — not its middle, and not the beginning of the sign.
• The 1st house runs 30° from there; the next 30° is the 2nd house, and so on.

"The 1st house starts there, not 15 degrees before or at the beginning of the sign. So it starts there and goes for 30 degrees, and then next 30 degrees is the next house."

In the rasi chart:

• Mercury is at 18°51' Cancer. The 1st house from him is 18°51' Cancer to 18°51' Leo.
• Jupiter is at about 17° Leo. By whole signs he is in the 2nd from Mercury; by longitude he is in the 1st, near its end.
• Jupiter is the karaka of intelligence, and the 1st is a good house for him. He gives intelligence in the matter of learning — to a lesser extent, because he is far from the effective point of the house.

In the D-24:

• A planet in a sign of a divisional chart must be somewhere in that sign. The divisional longitude is how far the planet has progressed through that division.
• Mercury's D-24 longitude is at the very beginning of Libra. Every other planet is above that longitude, so whole signs serve as houses again.
• From Mercury, Jupiter (in Virgo) is in the 12th. He is 3rd and 6th lord from Libra: Viparita Raja Yoga from the education lagna.

"Viparita Raja Yoga doesn't mean education will go smoothly. Viparita Raja Yoga shows struggle and then at the end excellent results."

Reading for Jupiter dasha: struggle shows from every lagna in every chart. It will not be smooth. People will be prepared for bad results, then things work out and the results are better than expected.

Which Field of Study?

The bachelor's degree is the 9th house and the 9th lord of D-24.

• The 9th house, Pisces, has few influences: Jupiter's full aspect, Saturn's, Venus's half aspect, Rahu–Ketu's three-quarter aspect. No Mars.
• The 9th lord Jupiter is the dasha lord, so he counts for more than the house. Mars aspects Jupiter — the 8th graha drishti from Aquarius to Virgo, and close by divisional longitude (27° and 23°).
• Mars is the yogakaraka of the D-24 (5th and 10th lord). The 10th lord aspecting the 9th lord: education with a profession in mind. Mars is Jupiter's friend, and the dasha lord can listen to him. Saturn's half aspect Jupiter may not honour.
• So mechanical engineering is possible. Jupiterian fields — law, finance, economics — would also work.
• Counted from the lagna lord Moon (he studies abroad, so the 12th-house Moon is a valid reference), Mars is in the 9th.
• Master's degree, the 2nd house: the 2nd lord Sun is with Mars and Mars aspects the 2nd. The master's is definitely Martian.

A student's question: admission is settled by February–March though he joins in the fall — which date counts? The teacher: he looked at the dasha only to see how the time is, not to fix the field. "For all you know, he may go with one plan and two years later he may change it." He names the better possibilities and leaves the decision to the family.

Dasamsa (D-10) — Career

D-10 lagna: Gemini.

• Is Jupiter truly in the 8th? Yes: the D-10 lagna is at 17° and Jupiter at 22°.
• Nīcabhaṅga for Jupiter: Mars, who is exalted in Capricorn, is in the 10th from Moon. The teacher first credits Venus as well, then corrects himself: it is Mars who gives it.

If Jupiter shows the career (law, for example):

• 10th lord in the 8th: ups and downs, on-and-off work.
• With the 3rd lord: much travel on work and much contract work — a lawyer who takes clients and projects instead of working full-time for a firm.
• With the Sun: government or political cases, or cases against the administration of big corporations. Not management.

If Mars shows the career, he is far stronger — see the next section.

Mars from Every Reference

Rasi:

• From lagna: 10th lord (Scorpio), the kāryeśa, in the 3rd house in Aries, his mūlatrikoṇa. He aspects the 10th house by his 8th aspect.
• From the 10th house: he is in the 6th. A malefic in the 6th from a house guards that house well. He is not like the combust 4th lord Venus.
• From Mercury (karaka of work, 18°51' Cancer): 10th lord, and at 23° Aries inside the 10th house by longitude, just past its start.
• From Moon: he aspects the 10th house (Cancer).
• Amātyakāraka. In Bharani nakshatra.

Navamsa (the chart of fortune): 10th lord in the 10th house, Scorpio.

Dasamsa:

• From lagna: 6th lord in the 6th, and that sign is A10.
• From Moon: 10th lord in the 10th. Moon is the reference for mind and emotion, lagna for intellect; both matter for work.
• From exalted Mercury: he aspects the 10th and the 6th.
• He is in Īśānāṁśa, so some religious work is possible.

Strength:

• Own sign in rasi, navamsa and dasamsa.
• Vimsopaka bala 82%. Shadbala 127%.
• Paravatamsa: of the ten vargas he is in own sign, exaltation or mūlatrikoṇa in six.

"So that strong Mars in the 3rd house shows a go-getter. He is somebody who will go and get what he wants."

Judgment: Jupiter is also a good planet, but Mars is the most suitable. Even with the 10th lord Jupiter weak in the D-10, the 6th lord is very strong and the 10th house holds an exalted planet; and Jupiter has nīcabhaṅga.
