BPHS Ch.30 Verses 17-22 — Spouse's Health from the Upapada and the 2nd from It

Every result below is for planets placed in the Upapada (UL) itself or in the 2nd from it ("upārūḍhe dvitīye vā"). The result falls on the spouse ("tasya bhāminī").

Ketu + Venus — Blood Disorders

• Śikhi = Ketu, Śukra = Venus. Both in UL or the 2nd from it: "rakta-pradara-rogārtā" — the spouse suffers blood diseases.
• Literally "rakta-pradara" is the coming out of blood. The teacher takes it broadly: disorders relating to blood.

Mercury + Ketu — Bone Problems

• Budha and Ketu there: "asthi-srāva-saṁyutā" — bone-related problems for the spouse.

Saturn + Rahu + Sun — "Asthi-jvara"

• Śani, Rāhu and Arka there: "asthi-jvara", literally fever of the bones. Santhanam translates it as "distress of bones".
• The teacher is not satisfied with the expression:

"The expression is a little weird. Something is fishy there. Asthi-jvara is not an expression that gels well together. Why is he talking about fever and bones in the same breath?"

• His reading: it may be a misprint, or some adjective to jvara. Take it as different kinds of fevers. The Sun is the planet of fire, so too much fire in the system.

The Logic of the First Three

• Rahu and Ketu are planets of decay, of problems, of void.
• Ketu joins Venus: Venus-related depletion. Ketu joins Mercury: Mercury-related depletion. Ketu or Rahu joins the Sun: Sun-related depletion.
• For the Sun, Parāśara does not say "Sun and Ketu". He says Saturn, Rahu and Sun. So Saturn and Rahu are planets of depletion just as Ketu is.

Mercury + Rahu — A Stout Spouse

• Budha and Rahu in UL or the 2nd: "sthūlāṅgī" — fat, a very stout body.
• Mercury is the planet of the earth element. The planet showing the earth element is with a malefic in that house. So apart from bone problems, it can give a fat person.

Mars + Saturn in a Mercurial or Martian Sign — Breathing Problems

• "Budha-kṣetre kujārkī cet nāsikā-roga-saṁyutā". Ārki = born of Arka (the Sun) = Saturn. Mars and Saturn in a sign of Mercury (Gemini or Virgo), in UL or the 2nd: diseases of the nose.
• Literally the nose, but it does not have to be the nose. It means breathing-related disease.
• The next line extends it: the same result in a Martian sign (Aries or Scorpio).

What is the key? The class first looked for it in the Mercurial sign: Gemini is an airy sign and shows the lungs in the natural zodiac, and Mercury owns the natural 6th house. The teacher accepts both points but shows they are not the key, because the same result is given for a Martian sign.

"So it does not really have to do with the Budha-kṣetra. In both places, Mars and Saturn together is the key."

• Saturn is the planet of air. If Saturn is badly placed or badly afflicted, it shows breathing problems. Earlier classes had examples: people with a weak or afflicted Saturn have asthma and breathing trouble.
• A strong Mars afflicting Saturn is the problem.
• Why these two kinds of sign: for health matters Mars is strong in a Mercurial sign and in his own sign.
  • In his own sign Mars is free. Whatever Saturn shows — breathing, lungs — is hammered by Mars.
  • Mercury is a neutral planet, good with everybody. Mars is considered strong in Mercurial signs for physical and material matters and gets full cooperation from Mercury.
  • In a sign of Jupiter, Jupiter can restrain him. Jupiter is the Jīva, the life force. If Mars tries to give ill health there, Jupiter holds him back.
• The sign is only a general guideline. Mars must be strong, and he must have something to do with the 6th or the 8th house — he must be capable of giving illness.
  • If Mars is lagna lord, being with Saturn will not necessarily give breathing problems.
  • A Mars with duḥsthāna qualifications who is reasonably strong will do it even outside these signs — in a solar sign, for example.

"Strong Mars with a bad intent, when he afflicts Saturn in Upapada or the 2nd from there, can give breathing diseases to the wife, like bronchitis, asthma, all these things."

• Not only for the spouse. If such a Mars afflicts Saturn in the lagna or the 6th house, the native gets it.

Jupiter + Saturn — Ears and Eyes

• "Bṛhaspati-śanī tatra karṇa-netra-rujānvitā": Jupiter and Saturn there give the spouse problems of hearing and vision.
• Hearing makes sense. Jupiter controls hearing, so Jupiter afflicted by Saturn (or by Rahu, though only Saturn is named) harms it.
• Vision does not make sense. Venus is the planet of the eyes, but vision itself is shown by the Sun. It would fit if the Sun were afflicted. The teacher suspects a small corruption in the text.

Mercury + Mars, or Jupiter + Rahu — Dental Problems

• Budha and Bhauma there, or Svarbhānu (Rahu) and Devejya (Jupiter) there: "bhāryā danta-rujānvitā" — the spouse has dental problems.
• Mercury: the Sun shows all the bones of the body, including the teeth. Mercury, as the planet of the solid state, the earthy element, can also show the teeth.
• Jupiter + Rahu: Jupiter in the 2nd house shows someone who likes sweets a lot.

"If an afflicted Jupiter is in the 2nd house, he can show somebody who eats sweets a lot, and that can basically spoil the teeth."

• Why Rahu? It need not be Rahu only. Rahu, Saturn and Ketu are the planets of depletion and loss, so their affliction is the one that gets mentioned.

Saturn + Rahu — Vāta Disorders

• Saturn and Rahu there show Vāta-related problems.
• The Moon can also show Vāta when waning (kṛṣṇa pakṣa). Mercury is tridoṣa and shows any of the three depending on who he is with and where he is. But the full-time Vāta planets are only Saturn and Rahu, so they are the ones named.

The Disclaimer — A Benefic's Aspect or Conjunction

• "Śubha-dṛg-yogato neti phalam evaṁ vyavasthitam". Śubha-graha here is a functional benefic. Dṛk = aspect, yoga = conjunction. With a benefic planet aspecting or conjoining, the result does not apply.
• Whether this covers only the previous line or all the results is not clear from the text. The teacher's take: it applies to all of them.

"Because of the disclaimer, it will be very tricky in real life. Venus and Ketu, if they are together — Venus itself may be a benefic, or there will be some other benefic aspect. It will be tricky to balance various factors and see which one will dominate."

• So do not conclude that the wife has a blood disease just because Venus and Ketu are in the 2nd from UL. With a benefic aspecting, it may not be that bad.

Planets as Elements, Not Dhātus

The seven dhātus (as recalled in class): the Sun shows bones, the Moon shows blood, Venus shows semen, Mercury shows skin.

In these verses Parāśara is not using the dhātus. Bone problems are given to Mercury, not the Sun. Blood is given to Venus, not the Moon. Mercury is not given skin.

"He is not using the dhatus here. He is using the elements directly."

• The classification is similar to the one used in Triṁśāṁśa.
• He leaves Rahu, Ketu and Saturn aside as the planets that deplete, and takes the others. In effect he is taking the pañca-bhūtas.
