BPHS Chapter 24 — 7th Lord in the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Houses

The class resumes at verse 79 (the teacher calls it chapter 24 in class). Method throughout: take the house in question as lagna and see which lord the 7th lord becomes and which house it sits in from there.

7th Lord in 7th House (Verse 79)

Sanskrit results:

• Dāra-sukhānvitaḥ — endowed with marital happiness
• Dhīraḥ — bold, courageous
• Vicakṣaṇaḥ — good discretion, good judgment, skill
• Dhīmān — intelligent
• Kevalaṁ vāta-rogavān — only some Vata diseases; healthy otherwise

Why the results make sense:

Marital bliss:

• From the 7th house as lagna, this is lagna lord in lagna. Very auspicious. The marriage is blessed.

Bold (dhīraḥ):

• From the 3rd house of boldness, the 7th lord is the 5th lord in the 5th house.
• The lord of Purva Punya is in its own house. In general the 5th lord and the 9th lord are auspicious for the house they are counted from.
• Purva Punya relating to bravery. He is very bold.

Intelligent, with good judgment:

• Intelligence and judgment are seen from the 5th house. From the 5th, the 7th lord is the 3rd lord in the 3rd.
• 3rd lord in 3rd makes the 3rd strong. The 3rd is an Upachaya and shows initiative; it is a Kama Trikona.
• So the Kama Trikona from the house of intelligence is strong: he is not only intelligent, he desires to apply it. Applied intelligence. That is why Parashara says vicakṣaṇaḥ and not only dhīmān.
• The planet sits in the 7th house of interaction. He interacts a lot with people, and that makes him use his judgment: what is good and what is bad you learn by dealing with people.

Vata diseases:

• The same result was given for the 7th lord in lagna. Both are extroverts, always talking to people, always on the move. Being always on the move is a Vata nature, "like air, moving from here to there".
• The planet in the 7th has Argala on the 6th house of disease. So the 7th lord in the 7th can give some disease, more than the 7th lord in the 1st.
• The teacher calls this "an intelligent guess". Which doṣa it is depends on who the planet is, the lagna, the lagna lord and the 6th lord. It may be Pitta or Kapha.

7th lord in 1st vs 7th lord in 7th (a student's question):

• The 7th lord is the intelligence applied to interacting with people.
• In lagna: that is in his nature. He likes to interact, but he may or may not, depending on other things.
• In the 7th: the lord is in the house of interaction itself. He does interact a lot. The degree of extroversion is higher.

"In the first case, 7th lord in the lagna, the person likes to interact with people, but he may or may not, depending on other things. But in this case, there is a very good chance that he interacts with people."

7th Lord in 8th House (Verse 80)

Sanskrit results:

• Dāra-sukha-varjitaḥ — deprived of marital happiness
• Bhāryāpi roga-yuktā — the wife too is diseased
• Duḥśīlā — the wife has bad character
• Na cānugā — the wife does not follow him; she is not obedient

Why the results make sense:

No marital happiness:

• The lord of the 7th is in the 2nd from its own house, a Maraka sthana from the 7th.
• It is also the 8th from lagna. The planet that is the intelligence applied to relations, marital relations above all, is in the house that gives the native trouble. He is troubled on account of his relations.
• Asked whether this applies, the teacher adds: more so in the Navamsa than in the Rasi, but it is possible in both.

Wife diseased:

• From the 7th house as lagna, the lagna lord is in a Maraka sthana (the 2nd) and aspects the 8th house of long, chronic disease. She may have chronic diseases.
• For the native the planet is in the 8th house of trouble and tension. Either the marriage is on the rocks or the wife's health is the problem. Both are possible.

Wife of bad character:

• The wife's character is seen from the 9th from the 7th, which is the 3rd house.
• From the 3rd house, the 7th lord is the 5th lord in the 6th. The planet of Purva Punya is in the house of struggle and obstacles. The Purva Punya is blocked.
• She may not have great character or a good sense of dharma.

Wife disobedient:

• The planet of relations is in the 8th house of tension and anxiety. One form this takes: the wife does not listen and he is always fighting with her.
• The 6th is the house of quarrel; the 8th is the house of short temper and anger. He becomes angry on account of his relations. That happens when the other person does not listen to you.

7th Lord in 9th House (Verse 81)

Sanskrit results:

• Nānā-strībhiḥ samāgamaḥ — union with many women; the teacher: "he has a loose character"
• Jāyā-hṛta-manāḥ — his mind is taken by his wife; he is attached to her and takes good care of her
• Bahv-ārambha-karaḥ — a doer of many beginnings; he starts many tasks and is not a finisher

Why the results make sense:

Many women:

• From the 7th house, the lord is in the 3rd, an Upachaya and the house of initiative. He puts a lot of initiative into relations with people — in general, not only with women.
• He talks nicely, shows initiative, makes friends. One of the possibilities is pursuing many women. He has many women friends, and other friends too.

Attached to wife:

• The planet that shows the relation with the wife is well placed in a trine. The 7th lord is very strong.
• There can be another combination where a man has many relations and the relation with the wife is spoiled. That is not the case here.
• The 9th from lagna is a house of protection and of dharma. The relation with the wife is protected.

Starts many things:

• From the 3rd house of initiative, the 7th lord is the 5th lord in the 7th. Purva Punya of initiative is in the house of interactions relating to initiative. Plenty of initiative. He begins many things.
• From the 10th house of actual karma, of getting things done, the planet is in the 12th house of loss. He may or may not get things accomplished.
