BPHS — Ashtama Bhava Phaladhyayam (Chapter 19: Longevity)

The class returns to BPHS after a break, at the 8th house. Parashara starts with one loose rule and then refines it verse by verse, adding planets and exceptions. The numbers below are the order the verses were read in class, not the numbering of any edition.

Parashara's Words for Benefic and Malefic

• Papa and shubha = functional malefic and functional benefic (by lordship).
• Krura and saumya = natural malefic and natural benefic.
• So "with papas" in these verses means "with functional malefics". This is the teacher's reading.

Verse-by-Verse Rules

Verse 2 — "There Itself"

• The verse says the 8th lord is tatraiva, "there itself", with malefics. Two readings: (a) in the 8th house itself; (b) still in a Kendra, as a modification of verse 1 — in a Kendra is good, in a Kendra with malefics is bad.
• The next clause settles it: the lagna lord is also there. So it is the 8th house. The 8th lord in his own house is normally good, but here he afflicts the lagna lord, and functional malefics afflict both.
• Saturn version: replace the 8th lord with Saturn and the lagna lord with the 10th lord. The house is not stated; probably the 8th. Saturn in the 8th normally gives long life, like the 8th lord in the 8th. But there he afflicts the 10th lord — the native's activity — and other malefics confirm short life.

Verse 3 — Struggle and Long Life

• 6th or 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is Viparita Raja Yoga. In the Rasi chart it can give a long life. Not a smooth one.
• 6th or 12th lord in Lagna also gives long life, with a life full of struggle. Do not read it as a good combination; elsewhere it counts as a bad one.

"In order to actually have an opportunity to struggle a lot, you should at least live for a long time."

• Same as Saturn in the 8th: struggle, and a long life.

Verse 4 — Own Sign, Own Navamsa, Friend's Sign

• "Friend's sign" is to be seen in Rasi. Longevity is of the physical body, so it is judged from the Rasi chart. Navamsa is not the chart for longevity.
• Why own Navamsa still counts: a planet strong in Navamsa carries blessings from the past life, so a big setback in what it shows in Rasi is unlikely. Exaltation in Navamsa should work the same way; own Navamsa is one guideline.
• The verse also has the word mitreshe next to mitra-mandire. It does not fit the grammar. The teacher ignores it and takes it as a corruption.

Verse 5 — The Four Longevity Planets

• Lagna lord — the basic essence of the person.
• 8th lord — the house of longevity itself.
• Saturn — karaka of longevity, and of struggle and hard work. Much work needs a long life.
• 10th lord — karma. A native with big karma to do tends to live long; a strong 10th lord "will convince" a weak lagna lord and 8th lord.
• Caveat from the class: big karma can be done in a short life. Adi Shankara did far more than Vivekananda and lived a shorter life. These are generic principles.
• The 11th is included with Kendras and Trikonas: a planet in the house of gains gives gains in its own area.

"And" or "or"? The verse says neither. One of the four in a Kendra/Trikona is not enough — many people have it and do not live long. All four is too strict. The teacher's reading: some of them, two or three of the four.

A student's objection: verse 1 already gave long life for the 8th lord alone in a Kendra. Answer: that alone is about a 40% indication. If Saturn and the 10th lord are very weak, or the lagna lord badly afflicted, it fails. With three of the four in Kendra/Trikona it is about 90%.

"You can either look at one parameter and give a reading, but you cannot be very confident about it. Or you can look at more parameters and you can be more confident."

Verse 6 — 8th Lord in a Kendra, Lagna Lord Weak

• The 8th lord in the 8th is safe. The 8th lord in a Kendra is dicey: the giver of struggle is strong. The native may struggle through a long life — or just struggle to stay alive and die soon.
• If the lagna lord, the basic essence of being, is weak, the 8th lord in a Kendra does not guarantee long life.
• "20 years, at most 32": the teacher does not know how the figures are derived. The second figure shows the first is loose. Bottom line: alpayu, short life.

Verses 7–8

• Jantu in verse 7 means the native; literally a creature, so the rule holds for animals as for men.
• Verse 8: 8th lord and 8th house both hit by malefics, plus a natural malefic (krura) in the 12th — the child dies as soon as it is born.

Verse 9 — An Impossible Condition

The teacher runs through all twelve lagnas: for none of them is the 8th lord debilitated in the lagna sign. Rahu and Ketu do not rescue it either, whichever debilitation signs are taken. Three ways out:

1. The verse is a later insertion or a corruption. Most likely.
2. Houses are not whole signs (15°-to-15° houses, or cusp-based houses), so the 8th house can start inside the lagna sign. He does not advocate this: "I still hold the view that each sign is a house."
3. A one-stroke copying error: randhreshau (dual) instead of randhresho. Then it reads "a debilitated planet and the 8th lord in Lagna" — the 8th lord in Lagna together with some debilitated planet.

Verses 10–11 — The 5th House and the Moon

• Verse 10 repeats the afflicted 8th house and 8th lord and adds one new factor: the 5th house of purva punya. Malefics there rob the native of merit from the past.
• Verses 8 and 9 are infant death. Verse 10 is short life.
• Verse 11 names the 8th lord in the 8th as something the result happens in spite of. Even with that, a very weak Moon — with malefics, no benefic aspect — gives death within a month of birth. A very general combination; take it with a pinch of salt.
• The point: the Moon matters. He is the karaka of sustenance, the body and the mind.

Verses 12–13 — Jupiter and the Lagna Lord

• Exalted lagna lord is "the seed of the whole chart". The verse names the 11th for the Moon; a Kendra or Trikona is probably as good.
• Jupiter comes in here for the first time. He is not the karaka of longevity like Saturn, but his name is Jiva — life. The verse names the 8th, the worst of the three houses; in Lagna or the 10th he will certainly do as much. "He just gives one example and expects you to fill in the blanks."
• Verse 13 is placed last on purpose: after all the parameters, a really strong lagna lord lifts the chart by himself.

"If the lagna lord is really strong, he is capable of uplifting the chart, give a long life. Lagna is a key for everything."

• Even with no benefic aspecting him from a Kendra, an extremely strong lagna lord gives long life, in the teacher's view.

What the Chapter Leaves Out

A student notes that longevity is the least-used side of the 8th house in practice. Parashara gives no illness rules here (they are under the 6th house), and the 8th lord's role in other houses came up in the earlier chapters. A strong 8th house linked to the 9th can also give inheritance or a lottery.

Weighing the Longevity Planets

Parashara ends the list of four planets with a loaded statement: there are many well-known longevity yogas; whichever is strong decides.

• One planet may show short life (8th lord debilitated and hit by functional malefics) while another shows long life (10th lord strong in the 9th with benefics). Judge the strength of each and decide who dominates.
• The 8th lord is the most direct, since he rules the house itself. But he is only one of several.
• There is no thumb rule for the weighing. Look at the interplay.

"It is not like each planet is walking a separate path. The path of giving a particular longevity to the person is one path."

• A planet gains control over the others by being with them, by being their dispositor (in Rasi or in Navamsa), or by friendship with Saturn, the karaka. Example given: 8th lord in the 8th; lagna lord with him without malefics, or in his other sign; Saturn in a Navamsa he owns. If that 8th lord is also strong, he calls the shots.
• Order of importance (given at the end of the chapter): lagna lord, then Saturn, then 8th lord, then 10th lord.
• If the lagna lord is really badly placed and shows a short life, Saturn cannot rescue the chart. Saturn can rescue other weak planets.
