Q&A: Guru Chandala Yoga Nuances

Question: Rahu is well placed and is the 5th lord, Jupiter is the 6th lord, and they are together. Does Guru Chandala Yoga still exist?

Answer: Yes.

"Guru Chandala Yoga still exists. Guru's natural significations will be attacked by Rahu because Rahu hates Guru."

• Jupiter wants to give children, dharma, wisdom. Rahu wants to rob all of these — to make one not so wise, not so religious.
• So in general the Rahu–Jupiter combination is not auspicious. But depending on the houses they own, there may be some compromise.

When the two cooperate

• One owns the 5th, the other owns the 7th: there is a Raja Yoga between them. They are enemies, but they are asked to do some good work together.
• Rahu cooperates more if he is involved in the agenda beyond mere lordship — if the karaka of his house is his friend.
• Example: Leo lagna. Rahu is the 7th lord, and the 7th karaka Venus is his friend. "He is the group manager and his friend is the project manager." He is less likely to abandon the marriage agenda just because he hates Jupiter.
• Put that Rahu with Jupiter, the 5th lord, in the 5th house in Sagittarius. Jupiter is very strong and wants to give children; Rahu is the 7th lord. Jupiter does not like Rahu in his house, but the agendas meet, so they work together to give a reasonably happy marriage and children.

The student's case — roles reversed

• Here Jupiter himself is the functional malefic and Rahu is the one who wants to help.
• The tension between the two is still there, and Jupiter has been weakened a lot by the conjunction.
• Jupiter's agenda is to misbehave. Rahu's agenda is perhaps to behave well, but his inherent tendency is to misbehave.
• Rahu owns the 5th, but the 5th karaka (Jupiter) is not his friend. Owning the house does not make him slog for it. If there is a good chance he gives some result; otherwise he is not excited to give children.
• Bottom line: some problem relating to children or other 5th-house matters — intelligence, wisdom, discretion, judgment, even digestion.

"Whenever Jupiter and Rahu are together, unless Jupiter is much stronger, Rahu is the one who will dominate."

• Some Jupiter–Rahu cases are obviously fine, some are obviously not, and some are tricky. This one is tricky.

Q&A: Saturn and Ketu in the 2nd from a Cancer Moon — Whom to Propitiate

Situation: The native's Janma Rashi (Moon sign) is Cancer. Saturn and Ketu are transiting together in Leo, the 2nd from the Moon, and Saturn is in Gandanta. The students expected trouble with speech and food. Whom should he propitiate?

This is the 2nd from the Moon, not from lagna — a student points this out and the teacher corrects himself.

Diagnosis

• The 2nd is not only food and speech. It is the house of all resources.
• Ketu's nature is to burn things and reduce them to ashes, so that the whole world can get moksha one day. Saturn's nature is again to deplete.

"Both are planets of depletion. When they are in the house of resources, it's not at all good."

• Not enough money; or the food is there but he cannot eat it. He lacks regular, good food.
• Ketu owns the 5th from Cancer, but his transit in the 2nd is still not auspicious. Both planets are problems.
• Saturn and Ketu influencing the 2nd or the 5th house: there is a possibility of somebody doing a prayoga / abhichara against the native.

Option 1 — Vishnu, for Saturn

• By Parashara's definitions Saturn shows Narayana / Vishnu. Saturn is with Ketu, and Ketu among Vishnu's avataras is Matsya.
• So: Matsya Avatara directly — Om Namo Bhagavate Matsyadevaya — or Veda Narayana, the form of Narayana who rescued the Vedas. There is a temple of Veda Narayana a little away from Tirupati on the way to Chennai.
• If Saturn is the main problem, you can forget Ketu and simply suggest Vishnu.

Option 2 — Ganesha, for Ketu

• Ketu shows Ganesha. He is in Leo and he is with Saturn, who shows Vishnu, so a Vishnu-like, sattvic form of Ganesha. (The teacher names a form for Leo here; the name is not clear on the recording.)
• If the worry is a prayoga, the best form is Kumara Ganapati — Ganesha with Kumara's (Skanda's) energy, very powerful for breaking prayogas and getting rid of evil forces.
• For power and influence: the regular Ganapati bija mantra, or the Raja Ganapati mantra, which is more powerful.

Option 3 — Rudra, for Saturn giving physical danger

• Parashara gave Vishnu for Saturn in the context of the 12th from Atmakaraka. For relief from Saturn you can suggest many devatas.
• If serious Shani trouble is expected on the body: Rudra — Rudra Namakam, Chamakam, Mrityunjaya mantra, Mrityunjaya homam.
• Saturn is the karaka of ayush, so the Mrityunjaya mantra, which gives long life, is very appropriate for him.
• Ketu also shows the Rudras. Saturn with Ketu, in Gandanta, showing physical danger: Rudra homam is very appropriate.

Dasharatha's Shani Stotram

• Dasharatha wanted to stop Shani from doing Rohini-bheda — Saturn leaving Krittika and passing a particular degree of Rohini with his latitude in a particular range. It is said to cause a long drought.
• He went to the skies and prayed to Shani. Shani was pleased and spared Dasharatha and his subjects that time.
• Reading that prayer is said to relieve the troubles of Saturn. It is apt here: the transit is in the Sun's sign and Dasharatha is a Suryavamshi king. Good to read on the coming Shani Trayodashi.
• Before the stotram two mantras are given: Shanno Devir Abhishtaye and Tryambakam Yajamahe. The Mrityunjaya mantra goes with every Shani prayer.

Mahakala

• A student recalls Mahakala as the Shiva form for Saturn. Mahakala is Shiva's form with Saturn's energy.
• At the subtlest level he is time personified. No distinction of good and bad, of this person and that person. He has his job and keeps doing it. In that sense you cannot really worship him.
• But you can keep a picture of the Shivalinga of the Mahakala temple at Ujjaini and say Om Mahakalaya Namah.
• Do not think of Mahakala only as that high form. He can also be thought of in a lower form — all the Rudras.
• In general, praying to Rudra and doing the Mrityunjaya mantra is very powerful for Shani; the specific form Mahakala is not needed.

Graha-Devata Assignments (Parashara’s Scheme)

Listed by the teacher while answering the Saturn–Ketu question: "These are the basic Parashara definitions."

• Saturn showing Kali and the like are other extensions. In general Saturn shows Vishnu.
• Parashara's Vishnu for Saturn was said in the context of the 12th from Atmakaraka. For relief from Saturn's troubles Rudra is well recommended.

Choosing the right form

"Each god has many forms. There is a very, very highest subtle form which is practically useless for getting anything, because those forms are not meant for asking for relief from this body. At that level this body is Maya."

• Ganesha as the highest deity of the whole universe is the Ganesha of the Ganapati Atharvashirsha. That form is essentially formless. If you are smart you ask it for nothing; you marvel at it and try to be one with it.
• If somebody is doing abhichara against you and you want it defeated, do the Kumara Ganapati mantra. Reciting the Atharvashirsha a million times will do nothing for that goal.
• Every devata — Mahakala, Rudra, Vishnu, Shiva — has forms within the domain of Maya, manifested for different purposes. Praying to those forms for benefits is acceptable. That is why the tantras and mantras exist.
• The other road: the karmic body is wrapped in many ropes, each tied to some person, all pulling on you. If you do not want to add more ropes but only get rid of the existing ones, you do not do all these things.

"It depends on what you want and who you are."

Q&A: Rahu Transit Effects

Case: Virgo lagna, natal Mercury (10th lord) in Leo, Arudha Lagna in Cancer, natal Moon in Aries. When Rahu moved into Aquarius the native was accused of something.

From lagna:

• Rahu in Aquarius aspects the natal 10th house (Gemini) by his 5th aspect and the 10th lord Mercury in Leo by his 7th aspect. Not auspicious.

From Arudha Lagna — the reference for image:

• Aquarius is the 8th from Cancer. The 8th shows sudden changes, sudden ups and downs.
• Rahu or Ketu transiting the 8th from AL: sudden setbacks in image. Jupiter transiting the 8th from AL: a sudden boost to the image.
• The result need not last the whole 18 months of the transit, and it can come at any time within it. But for all three reasons these 18 months are a vulnerable period.

From the Moon:

• Aquarius is the 11th from Aries — one of the only three houses that are good for Rahu to transit.
• So there may be some bad name, but he may not be much affected by it. He takes it well.
