BPHS Ch.33 v39+: 5th from Karkamsa Skills (Sun/Mars=Warrior, Saturn=Archer/Patient, Rahu=Heavy Technology, Ketu=Precision Machinery, Venus=Poet, Moon+Jupiter=Great Author); CRITICAL: Venus > Jupiter for Eloquence (Jupiter=Elevated Only; Venus=Compassion for ALL); 6th=Specialized Knowledge; 2nd=Skills Put to USE (10th from 5th)

5th from Karkamsa = soul's skills (Poorva Punya gifts): Sun = Khadgadhara (sword = commander, contact warrior, decision-maker); Mars = Kuntadhara (spear = front-line fighter, military); Saturn = Dhanudhara (bow = foot soldier, patient precision, persistent researcher); Rahu = Loha Yantra (metal-machine = heavy machinery, missiles, modern technology); Ketu = Ghatika Yantra (clock = precision/subtle machinery, exact sciences); Venus = Kavir Vagmi (poet, literary artist). Moon+Jupiter in 5th = Granthakrut (great author, famous wisdom communicator); Venus in 5th = slightly lesser author; Jupiter alone = Sarvavid Granthakrut ("knows Veda+Vedanta but NOT eloquent to all people — writes beautifully for scholars; hard for laymen"). CRITICAL teaching — Venus vs Jupiter for eloquence: "Jupiter = teacher of gods; if communicating to gods, it is easier — they have attainment. Venus = teacher of demons — much harder, requires MORE communication skill." Three kinds: Mercury = excellent at RECEIVING ("no matter what others say, Mercury understands"); Jupiter = communicates beautifully but only among equals ("like-minded can appreciate; others may not understand"); Venus = can communicate at ANY level ("Venus has compassion even for demons; putting yourself in other person's shoes = true eloquence; Venus = greatest devotee of Shiva who has compassion for all"). 6th from Karkamsa = specialized knowledge: Mars = Naiyayika (crisp logic, Nyaya Shastra); Mercury = Mimamsaka (analyst, systematic); Saturn = patient researcher (shy in assembly); Sun = Gita Jna (musician, knowledge of rhythm); Moon = Sankhya Yoga Jna + literature + melody; Ketu/Rahu = Ganita Jna (mathematics, advanced sciences). Jupiter connection → Sampradaya (blessings from traditional lineage). 2nd from Karkamsa = skills PUT TO USE ("5th = skill you have; 2nd = how soul converts ability into action; 2nd = 10th from 5th = karma of skill"). Karkamsa philosophy: Lagna = action in world; Moon = conscious thought; Karkamsa = soul's deep identity, what it came for — "deeper than Moon, different from Lagna; may give insights person hasn't realized about themselves." D9 = primary chart for skills (Purva Punya); D27 = research option.

"Jupiter is the teacher of gods. If you need to communicate to gods — elevated, refined beings — it is relatively easy. But Venus is the teacher of demons. To communicate to those who are not elevated, who may be crude or hostile — that requires much more skill. True eloquence is understanding the other person and putting yourself in their shoes. That compassion belongs to Venus, not Jupiter. Parashara gives Venus the quality of eloquence for this reason."

Verse 39: 5th from Karkamsa — Weapons and Skills (Malefic Planets)

Context: We are still seeing 5th house results from Karkamsa. Earlier verses covered diseases (TB, poison, Paramahamsa). Now Parashara gives weapon-related skills, interpreted as the soul's fighting/technical abilities.

Planet in 5th from KarkamsaSanskrit TermLiteral MeaningReal Skill
SunKhadgadharaSword-bearerContact warrior, decision-maker, commander
MarsKuntadharaSpear-bearerFront-line fighter, military person
SaturnDhanudharaBow-bearerFoot soldier, patient executor, precision person
RahuLoha Yantra bhakMetal-machine userHeavy machinery, missiles, modern technology
KetuGhatika YantraClock/hour-machine userPrecision/subtle machinery, exact sciences
VenusKavir VagmiPoet/EloquentPoet, literary scholar, artist

PVNR interpretation (taking it beyond the literal):

"Today nobody wears a sword or bow. So what do these actually mean?"

  • Sun + Mars (sword/spear): These are the Kshatriya warrior planets. They fight in contact — close to the enemy, at risk themselves. In modern context: person who puts himself on the front line, makes high-stakes decisions, battlefield commanders, those who take personal risks.
  • Saturn (bow): Saturn = Shudra; a Shudra fights differently — from distance, patiently. Bow requires patience and precision before releasing. Modern: foot soldiers, patient researchers, those who execute rather than command. Saturn = patience, precision, labored work.
  • Rahu (metallic machine): Rahu = heavy, large-scale, complicated machinery. Missiles, industrial machines, heavy technology, modern medicine equipment.
  • Ketu (ghatika/clock): Ketu = small, precise, subtle machinery. A clock = small but precise. Ketu shows precision machinery, subtle technology, things that work by exact logic. "Ketu shows small and subtle things; Rahu shows big things."

5th house = the house of skills (Poorva Punya — blessings from past life). Also = 12th from 6th (loss of fighting spirit). The skill comes as a gift of past life karma; the person has it but may not always USE it.

Verses on 5th from Karkamsa — Literary and Knowledge Skills

Verse: "If Moon and Jupiter are in the 5th from Karkamsa" (or conjoining/aspecting):

ConfigurationTermResult
Moon + Jupiter in 5thGranthakrutGreat author; famous communicator of wisdom
Venus in 5thKinchiduna (a little less)Author, but slightly lesser caliber
Mercury in 5thEven less than VenusAuthor of still lesser caliber
Jupiter alone in 5thSarvavid GranthakrutKnows all; knows Veda + Vedanta; writes well — BUT not eloquent/articulate to all

Why is Jupiter alone not eloquent despite all knowledge?

"Jupiter is the teacher of gods. If you need to communicate an idea to gods, it's easier — they have attainment and refinement. But Venus is the teacher of demons. If you need to communicate to those who are not refine or elevated, it's much harder. It requires MORE communication skill."

— PVNR

"Communication skill is: understanding the other person. If you don't understand the other person and just blurt out your knowledge, you are not eloquent. Parashara attributes the quality of talking nicely and being articulate to Venus, not Jupiter."

Mercury, Jupiter, Venus — three kinds of communicators:

  • Mercury: Excellent at RECEIVING/grasping communication. No matter what others say, Mercury understands. Strong Mercury = great listener/learner.
  • Jupiter: Communicates beautifully — but only among equals. Like-minded people can appreciate; others may not understand.
  • Venus: Can communicate at ANY level — high or low. Venus = compassion for all beings. "Venus has compassion even for demons. He teaches them and tries to make them as good as they can be. That compassion = putting yourself in the other person's shoes = true eloquence."

Why Venus for eloquence:

"Venus is the greatest devotee of Shiva. Shiva has compassion for all — gods, demons, tortured jivas. He never discriminates. That quality of Shiva passes to Venus. Venus can explain something to anybody, because he has compassion for anyone. That is what true eloquence is."

— PVNR

Verses on 6th from Karkamsa — Specialized Knowledge

Planet in 6th from KarkamsaTermType of Knowledge
MarsNaiyayikaLogician; expert in Nyaya Shastra (crisp logic, conclusion-drawing)
MercuryMimamsakaAnalyst; expert in analysis and argumentation; systematic reasoner
SaturnSabha JarakshaShy in assembly; OR patient and persistent; labored but careful
SunGita JnaKnowledge of songs/music; musician (Gita = song here, NOT Bhagavad Gita)
MoonSankhya Yoga Jna + Sahitya Jna + GayaObjective/material science; appreciation of literature; singer (melody)
KetuGanita JnaMathematician; advanced sciences
RahuSame as KetuMathematics; allied modern sciences

Saturn note: "Saturn shows dullness in public speaking — but also patience, persistence, and careful construction. Every coin has two sides. He only shows one possibility here. Saturn can also show a patiently-constructed researcher or writer, not just a shy speaker."

Sun for music: Sun shows knowledge of rhythm (not melody). Moon shows melody. "Sun is the singer who knows the beat; Moon is the singer who knows the tune."

Moon for objective science: Moon = mind drawn to objects. "When Moon looks at the world, he sees objects. Moon = material/objective understanding of the universe. Sankhya Yoga = material analysis of the universe (as done by Kapila Maharshi)." Moon also shows appreciation of literature (flexible, liquid quality needed for poetry/art).

Jupiter link in 5th/6th: If there is a Jupiter connection → Sampradaya (blessings from tradition; knowledge received from traditional lineage/parampara).

2nd from Karkamsa — Skills Put to Use

Parashara: The same combinations that apply to the 5th from Karkamsa also apply to the 2nd from Karkamsa.

Why 2nd?

  • 2nd = 10th from 5th → how the skill is USED/put into action (10th = karma, how you apply something)
  • Also = 5th from 10th → the skill needed for the work one does
HouseMeaning
5th from KarkamsaSkills you HAVE (may or may not use; given by past life Poorva Punya)
2nd from KarkamsaSkills you actually PUT TO USE; how your soul converts its abilities into action

"5th house is the skill. You may or may not use them. But 2nd house is the skill you actually use. How you put your skill to use is shown in the 10th house from the 5th, which is the 2nd."

Karkamsa — Philosophical Foundation

Critical distinction: Karkamsa ≠ what you DO in the world.

IndicatorWhat it shows
LagnaWhat you DO in the world; how you act; Karmendriyas (organs of action)
MoonWhat you consciously PERCEIVE and think; Jnanendriyas (organs of knowledge)
KarkamsaWhat your SOUL identifies with; the deep internal sense of "this is I, this is what I came for"; your soul's motivation

"Karkamsa is your self-awareness, your self-identity, the soul's sense of what it needs to do. The person may or may not be consciously aware of it. It is deeper than Moon (conscious thinking) and different from Lagna (action). Karkamsa readings give insights the person may not have realized about themselves."

— PVNR

D9 for skills: The primary divisional chart for seeing skills is the Navamsa (D9). Skills are a result of Purva Punya (past-life merit), and Navamsa is the chart of Dharma and karmic inheritance.

D27 (Nakshatramsha): Research potential for skills. Parashara says D27 = "Balabalam" (strengths and weaknesses of a person). Skills fall under strengths/weaknesses. Not much traditional study has been done. Worth exploring as a research chart.
