Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga — Three Formation Rules, Dusthana Lord Exception & Timing Application

The teacher gives three basic causes of Neecha Bhanga: the debilitated planet is retrograde; it is exalted in the Navamsa; or the planet exalted in its sign of debilitation, or the lord of that sign, is in a quadrant from lagna or Moon. For Mars in Cancer that means Jupiter or Moon in a kendra from lagna or Moon; conjunction with the sign lord is not one of the rules. Neecha Bhanga of a dusthana lord is the lower grade: in a student’s chart with Sagittarius lagna and Moon in Scorpio, Mars in the 10th breaks the debilitation, but Moon as 8th lord was better off debilitated. Key principle

Because Moon is the 8th lord, he is better off in neecha than neecha being broken. Had Moon been the 9th lord or a quadrant lord, then the neecha bhanga would have been even better.

Neecha Bhanga of a Dusthana Lord

  • A student asked: what if a dusthana lord is debilitated but has neecha bhanga?
  • That is not so desirable. Neecha bhanga of a quadrant lord or a trine lord is better than neecha bhanga of a dusthana lord.
  • It is not terrible. It is the lower grade of neecha bhanga.

How Neecha Bhanga Is Caused

The teacher gave the basic rules:

1. Retrogression

  • The planet is debilitated and also retrograde.

2. Exaltation in Navamsa

  • The planet is debilitated in the Rasi chart but exalted in the Navamsa.

3. Exaltation lord or sign lord in a quadrant

  • Take the planet that gets exalted in the sign of debilitation, and the planet that owns that sign.
  • One of the two must be in a quadrant from lagna or from Moon.
  • Example: Mars debilitated in Cancer. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer; Moon owns Cancer. Either Jupiter or Moon has to be in a kendra from lagna or Moon.
  • Jupiter sitting in Cancer together with Mars does not, by that fact, help. "He has to be in a kendra from either lagna or Moon."

What Does Not Count

  • A student offered a Saptamsa case: Jupiter, the 5th lord, debilitated in Makara in the 3rd house, with Saturn in his own sign. Is that neecha bhanga?
  • The teacher: no. He then listed the three rules above. Conjunction with the sign lord is not among them; the lord has to be in a kendra from lagna or Moon.

Worked Example — Debilitated Moon as 8th Lord

  • A student's chart: Sagittarius lagna, Moon in Scorpio.
  • No planet is exalted in Scorpio, so that clause does not apply. Look at the sign lord, Mars.
  • Mars is in the 10th house from lagna: the sign lord is in a quadrant from lagna. Moon has Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.
  • But Moon is the 8th lord here.

"Because Moon is the 8th lord, he is better off in neecha than neecha being broken. So it is not so strong. Had Moon been the 9th lord or something, or a quadrant lord, then the neecha bhanga would have been even better."

Remedy and Timing for a Debilitated Trine Lord

  • You can wear the gemstone of that planet. He is weak and cannot give his results; strengthening him is fine.
  • Praying to the planet also helps.
  • Choose the time. Being debilitated, the planet cannot normally deliver. Pray when the planet has some strength:
    • when its dasha or antardasha is running, because then it has more control over your life; or
    • when it has a strong transit, for example exalted in transit, or transiting the 1st house.

"You pick a time when the planet is strong, then the results are likely to be given better. So you can wear the gemstone, and you can manipulate the time when you actually pray to the planet, so that the results are maximized."
