BPHS Ch.24 — 4th Lord in Houses 10–12: Enjoyer (A4 in Lagna), Generous Self-Sacrificer (A4 in 6H), Lazy Addict (A4 in 8H) & Complete A4 Position Table

The 4th lord in the 10th, 11th and 12th. In the 10th: honoured by the government, a researcher absorbed in his work (7th from the 4th, and 7th lord in lagna counted from the 10th), an enjoyer who uses what he owns (A4 in lagna), and possibly above the moha of achievement (a māraka of the 10th placed in the 10th). In the 11th: fear of hidden or sexual disease (A4 in the 6th), capable rather than "virtuous" (aspect on the 5th, argala on lagna), and a giver of an unusual kind — he gives up his own gains so that others are happy. In the 12th: no comforts or comforts abroad (A4 in the 8th: anxiety, sudden gains, constant change), bad addictions, no formal schooling, and little initiative (the māraka of the 3rd sits in the 10th from the 3rd). The page closes with the table of where A4 falls for each placement and the D-30 moha discussion the 10th-house reading rests on.

Key principle

He may be somebody who sacrifices his own gains to make other people happy, rather than somebody who is writing a cheque for something that he has. So that kind of generosity is possible here.

BPHS Chapter 24 — 4th Lord in the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Houses

4th Lord in 10th House

Verse: sukheśe karma-bhāvasthe rāja-mānyo naro bhavet; rasāyanī mahā-hṛṣṭo sukha-bhogī jitendriyaḥ

Results:

  • Rāja-mānyaḥ — respected by kings: top politicians, administrators, the government
  • Rasāyanī — a scientist, especially a chemist
  • Mahā-hṛṣṭaḥ — always in great happiness, very cheerful
  • Sukha-bhogī — an enjoyer of his comforts
  • Jitendriyaḥ — one who has conquered his senses. "Probably not fully, but he has some control over his senses, body, mind."

Royal respect:

  • The 10th is respect and status in society. The planet who shows how happy you are is in that house. You are happy with the respect you get and with what you accomplish — a respected member of society.

Chemist — or researcher:

  • A student offered: the 4th house relates to liquids, hence chemicals. Another objected that a chemist works with solids too. The teacher let it stand as one interpretation.
  • His own reading: the 4th is learning and knowledge. The 4th lord in the 10th is in the 7th from the 4th — like a lagna lord in the 7th, it shows strong desire. Here the desire is for knowledge: someone pursuing knowledge all his life.
  • Counted from the 10th, the 7th lord is in lagna — again desire, now for his work. His work has to do with knowledge and he is absorbed in it.
  • "He may be staying till 1 o'clock in the early morning in his lab doing things." A researcher — "maybe not chemistry, maybe something else. This is just an example."

Sukha-bhogī (enjoyer):

  • For the 4th lord in the 9th Parāśara said sukhānvita — accompanied by comforts. That man has many TVs and fridges; he may or may not enjoy them, and with the lord in the 6th from the 4th he is always struggling and worrying about getting the next one.
  • Here the word is sukha-bhogī: sukha = comfort, bhogī = enjoyer. "He has nice Mercedes-Benz cars. But he is not just locking them up in a garage and going in his Hyundai car every day — he is going in that Mercedes-Benz every day."
  • Counted from the 4th, the lord is in the 7th of desire — a strong desire to be comfortable.
  • A4 falls in lagna. (Counting gives the 4th house itself; an ārūḍha cannot fall in its own house, so it moves to the 10th from it — lagna. A student first said the 4th and was corrected.) Lagna is the body. "All the comforts are physically enjoyed by the person." In the 2nd they would only be his wealth.

Jitendriyaḥ (conquered senses):

  • Do not take it absolutely. "It is very rare for somebody to be a jitendriya in this age." He controls his senses to some extent.
  • It is not about the five senses not working. It is about being a little above the delusion of the world.
  • The delusion is seen from the 10th house (see Part 3). The 4th lord is the 7th lord counted from the 10th — a māraka of the 10th — placed in the 10th itself.
  • "When a māraka is placed in lagna, he can give some overcoming of that particular thing."
  • Not guaranteed: "He may even show more desire for this moha. But there is a possibility."

4th Lord in 11th House

Verse: sukheśe lābhage jāto gupta-roga-bhayānvitaḥ; udāro guṇavān dātā paropakaraṇe rataḥ

Results:

  • Gupta-roga-bhayānvitaḥ — accompanied by fear of gupta-roga. Two meanings: diseases deep in the body that are hard to diagnose, and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Udāraḥ — generous
  • Guṇavān — Santhanam: virtuous. The teacher: capable (below).
  • Dātā — a giver
  • Paropakaraṇe rataḥ — engaged in helping others

Gupta-roga:

  • Counted from the 4th, the lord is in the 8th. That breaks happiness and gives lack of peace — but it does not say why the trouble is disease.
  • A4 falls in the 6th house, the house of disease. A4 is not only house and car; it is every tangible pursuit of happiness. Those pursuits are linked to the 6th.
  • It could mean litigation to get his house or car. Parāśara's choice: on account of his pleasures he gets into disease — "going to a prostitute and getting a sexually transmitted disease" is one possibility.
  • A student's second angle, accepted by the teacher: counted from the 11th (gains), the 4th lord is the 6th lord in lagna. For his gains the person has to struggle hard. Parāśara does not state this result; the logic is valid.

Not an enjoyer of his own comforts:

  • The lord of the 4th is in a dusthāna (the 8th) from the 4th. Unlike the previous case, this person is not an enjoyer of his own physical comforts. He is doing something else.
  • The teacher admits this is at loggerheads with the prostitute example: he may go now and then, not every day.

Generous, helpful (udāra, dātā, paropakaraṇe rata read together):

  • The 11th is friends and other people. Being the 5th from the 7th, it is also the feelings of other people. The 4th lord goes there: he is bothered about making other people emotionally well, and compromises his own happiness.

Guṇavān:

  • From the 11th the 4th lord aspects the 5th house. The 4th is the basic character, the 5th the abilities: a link between a quadrant and a trine, which is always good.
  • He has argala on lagna (the 11th-house argala), so he influences the basic nature of the person.
  • "If you want to talk about virtues, you are talking about the 9th house, not the 5th house. The 5th house is abilities of the person." So guṇavān here = a very capable person.
  • He may use those capabilities to deprive himself of peace, create more work and make other people happy.

What kind of giver:

  • A student: giving is the 12th house. The teacher agreed that true giving — giving up what you have — is the 12th. A house lord placed in the 12th gives up what that house holds: George Harrison handing over land for a temple is that kind of dātā.
  • A student then tried "A4 aspects the 12th". The teacher: A4 is in the 6th, and A4 is not a planet — it does not aspect.
  • The 4th lord in the 11th does not strengthen the 12th. Counted from the 11th he is a dusthāna lord (the 6th) sitting in it. The 11th — the last upachaya, the final accumulation — is weakened. He is not an accumulator.

"He may be somebody who sacrifices his own gains to make other people happy, rather than somebody who is writing a cheque for something that he has. So that kind of generosity is possible here."

4th Lord in 12th House

Verse: sukheśe vyaya-bhāvasthe gṛhādi-sukha-varjitaḥ; jāto durvyasanī mūḍhaḥ sadā’lasya-samanvitaḥ

Results:

  • Gṛhādi-sukha-varjitaḥ — devoid of happiness from house and the like
  • Durvyasanī — has bad habits, bad addictions
  • Mūḍhaḥ — a fool
  • Sadā ālasya-samanvitaḥ — "always nicely endowed with laziness"

No household comforts:

  • The planet who shows happiness from house etc. is in the 12th house of loss. Caution again: he may have his properties abroad.
  • A4 falls in the 8th house. "When the Arudha of any house falls in the 8th house or any dusthāna, such articles may be a cause of anxiety for the person." He may not have the house or car, or have it with a lot of trouble.
  • A student: does it depend on whether the planets involved are benefic or malefic? "Absolutely. It is just the tip of the iceberg." Look at the planets there, the argalas, the aspects, the kārakas of happiness (Venus, Moon). "You can't program this."
  • A4 in the 8th also shows sudden gains and a lot of change: a new Mercedes a month after the last one, a move from a $1 million house to a $1.2 million one. Changing houses often does not mean he is unhappy with them.
  • "All things being the same, 4th lord in the 12th house, A4 in the 8th house, probably he is not happy — but not guaranteed."

Bad addictions:

  • A student suggested the 6th (the habit becomes an enemy). The teacher: ask why you smoke in the first place — it gives the mind some pleasure. Every addiction, good or bad, is done because it gives happiness. (Hours of chanting or a daily homa can become an addiction too.)
  • So the 4th is the house of comforts and of vyasanas. Its lord in a dusthāna: he resorts to hidden or normally rejected things to get pleasure. A4 in the 8th adds to it.
  • Example given: a man with the 4th lord in the 6th and Rāhu in the 4th smokes. The 4th lord in the 6th also puts A4 in the 8th, and Rāhu is the kāraka of such addictions.
  • Drugs and cigarettes are a possibility when the 4th lord is badly placed, the 4th house or lord is tied to Saturn or Rāhu, and A4 is in a bad house. Smokers exist with other combinations.

Fool = unlearned:

  • The 4th is knowledge. Its lord goes to the 12th house of loss: he does not get formal education.
  • A4 — the formal learning — is in the 8th: breaks in learning.
  • "He may be worldly-wise, he may be a smart person in dealing with people, we don't know. But he doesn't have formal schooling. Unlearned is the word."

Laziness:

  • Laziness is the opposite of initiative. Initiative is the 3rd house. The 12th is the 10th from the 3rd — the house that executes initiative.
  • Who sits there? The 4th lord — the 2nd lord from the 3rd, its māraka. "The one who wants to kill your initiative is told: implement this initiative."
  • The 10th from any house is its executive house, its Indrasthāna. If the 10th from a house holds a māraka of that house, it is bad for that house.
  • The reverse case was the 4th lord in the 8th: counted from the 7th, the Indrasthāna lord (10th lord) is in the māraka-sthāna (2nd). Also bad for the 7th — hence the poor results for desire there.
  • "He may or may not be lazy, but he is not somebody endowed with great initiative." Possibly a procrastinator.

D-30 Ṣaḍ-ripu — the 10th House as Indrasthāna and Field of Moha

This came up while explaining jitendriya for the 4th lord in the 10th. The teacher repeats a proposal from an earlier class and marks its status:

"This is just my deduction. This is not from any classic."

  • The six enemies are read from the visible half of the Triṁśāṁśa (D-30) — houses 7 to 12. The D-30 shows the evil person within us.
D-30 houseRipuWhat a weakness there shows
7thKāmaDesire
8thKrodhaAnger
9thLobhaGreed — normally dharma; here not following dharma, lack of a giving nature
10thMohaDelusion — false pride in achievements and status
11thMadaWantonness — going to any extreme to get what you want
12thMātsaryaJealousy — normally humility and giving up; here clinging, envy of what another has
  • A student asked whether moha is attachment, or pride. The teacher: it is being deluded by your achievements and status — false pride, false prestige. Mada is not false pride; mada is wantonness.

"When somebody says you are a great scientist, you feel great about it and you are in moha, you are in delusion. Somebody says you are a great astrologer, that causes moha. Any achievement causes moha."

"That is why the 10th house is the house of Indra. It is called the Indrasthana because it is your achievement. Indra stands for your achievements and any pride that comes on account of it. And the word indriyas is derived from Indra."

  • Hence the 4th lord in the 10th — a māraka of the 10th placed in the 10th — can show some overcoming of the delusion that comes from the 10th.
