BPHS Ch.30 Upapada v1-16: 2nd from UL = Marriage Sustenance; Natural Malefic in 2nd = Wife Killed; Exalted Planet in 2nd = Many Beautiful Spouses; Gemini as UL/2nd = Multiple Marriages; Saturn+Rahu in 2nd = Scandal/Divorce/Death; Sthira Darakaraka (Venus/Jupiter) in Moon's Sign = Wifeless in Old Age

2nd from UL principle: "Like 2nd from Lagna = food that sustains the body; 2nd from UL = what sustains the marriage. Critical for marriage quality." Modern approach: "Don't just take 2nd lord — see ALL influences on 2nd from UL: occupants, aspects in Rasi, divisional amsha, functional/natural nature. Propitiate the dominant planet (the good one to protect, or the bad one to relent)." Key verse results: (1) Natural malefic in 2nd from UL (Nitya/Sthira amsha) = "Striyanasam" = killer of wife (extreme: literal; common: passive neglect, cause of wife's misfortune). (2) Exalted planet associated with 2nd from UL (in Rasi or D9) = many spouses, who are beautiful and of good qualities (Bahodara, Rupa, Lakshana) = "extreme marital fortune; modern = lucky in marital bliss." (3) Gemini as UL OR 2nd from UL = multiple marriages. "Why Gemini? Mithuna = couple + Mercury = multiplicity; Gemini applied to marriage = multiple spouses (same principle: twins if Gemini shows a child)." (4) Lord of UL in own sign (benefic) = good long marriage; PVNR: "benefic lord in own sign = usually good, eventually wifeless only if lord is malefic/afflicted — don't automatically predict wife-loss." (5) Lord of UL in own sign (malefic) = eventual wife-loss, but protects as long as possible. (6) Sthira Darakaraka (Venus = primary, Jupiter = secondary; "Parashara says Nitya DK, not just Venus") in Moon's sign = wifeless in old age. (7) Lord of UL or Sthira DK exalted = wife from noble (Sukhula) family, beautiful + good character. (8) Benefic in 2nd from UL = beautiful, fortunate wife (Jatasha sundari bharya). (9) Saturn+Rahu in 2nd from UL = loss of marriage through scandal/divorce/wife's death (Apavada = unfair blame/calumny). "Rahu = scandals; Saturn = endings; 2nd = sustenance; both draining it = marriage ends through disrepute."

"The 2nd house from the Upapada is the sustenance of the marriage — like the 2nd house from Lagna is the food that sustains the body. If Saturn and Rahu occupy the 2nd from Upapada, the marriage ends through scandal, unfair blame, or the wife's death. Apavada — somebody will say something that destroys everything. That is the meaning of Rahu there. And Saturn brings the permanent ending."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS Ch.30 — Upapada (Upavada) Verses 1-16

Chapter 30 follows Ch.29 (Arudha Padas). This chapter specifically addresses the Upapada (UL) — the Arudha of the 12th house — as the primary indicator of marriage/spouse quality.

The 2nd from Upapada — General Principle

"The 2nd house from Upapada is like the 2nd house from Lagna — it shows the sustenance/nourishment. 2nd from Lagna = food that sustains the body. 2nd from UL = what sustains the marriage. Hence 2nd from UL is critical for judging marriage quality."

— PVNR

Thumb rule (superseded by PVNR):

  • Old: "2nd lord from Upapada = ruler of marriage quality"
  • New: Look at ALL influences on the 2nd house from UL: who occupies it, who aspects it in Rasi, which Navamsa (amsha) that sign falls in, what natural/functional nature those planets have. Propitiate the dominant planet — either the good one (so he protects) or the afflicting bad one (so he relents).

Verse — Afflicted 2nd from UL → Wife Killed / Marriage Destroyed

Condition: If the 2nd house from Upapada is in a "Nitya" (bad/lowly) amsha — meaning it is in a divisional portion owned by a natural malefic (Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu etc. in a bad context) — or if it is aspected/conjoined by a natural malefic planet...

Result: "Striyanasam" = killer of wife (in extreme cases: literal; more commonly: passive neglect or cause of wife's misfortune)

Comment: The word "Nitya" (permanent) here suggests it refers to the natural/Sthira (fixed) planets' amshas, not just functional ones.

"If the 2nd from Upapada has only a natural malefic OR only a functional malefic, the remedy is to propitiate the lord or aspect with worship, not gemstone. If a benefic occupies or aspects with strength, propitiate that benefic to protect the marriage."

— PVNR

Verse — Exalted Planet Associated with 2nd from UL → Many Beautiful Spouses

Condition: Planet associated with 2nd from Upapada is:

  • Exalted in Navamsa (Swochyamsa), OR
  • Exalted in Rasi, OR
  • An exalted planet is aspecting the 2nd from UL from its exaltation sign (Gongadrishti)

Result: Many spouses (Bahodara), who are beautiful in appearance (Rupa) and have good qualities (Lakshana) — in ancient context = marital good fortune; in modern context = the person is "lucky with respect to marital bliss"

Verse — Gemini in UL or 2nd from UL → Multiple Spouses

Condition: Upapada OR the 2nd house from UL is placed in Gemini (Mithuna)

Result: Multiple spouses / multiple marriages

Why Gemini?:

  • Mithuna = "couple" + sign of Mercury = multiplicity
  • Mercury shows multiples (same principle: if Gemini shows a child, it can be twins)
  • Gemini's dual/Mercury nature applied to marriage = multiple spouses

Verse — Lord of Upapada in Own Sign → Wifeless in Later Life

Condition: The lord of the sign containing UL (or 2nd from UL) is placed in:

  • That same sign (the UL sign itself), OR
  • Another sign it owns (elsewhere in the chart) — "Svasvami" (own lord in own house)

Result: "Uttarayasin nidhara" = wifeless in later (old) life

PVNR's nuanced interpretation:

"This is a generally good combination — lord in own house is strong. Parashara is saying even this strong lord eventually makes the person wifeless. My interpretation: if the lord is a benefic (and not afflicted), this combination will NOT cause wife-loss even in old age. But if the lord is a malefic or afflicted, even his strength cannot prevent eventual loss — he will try to protect as long as he can, but eventually give way."

— PVNR

Caution: Don't automatically predict wife-loss just because lord is in own sign. Consider the nature (benefic/malefic) and afflictions.

Verse — Sthira (Permanent) Darakaraka in Moon's Sign → Also Wifeless in Old Age

Term clarification: "Nitya/Sthira Darakaraka" = Venus or Jupiter (permanent/fixed karka for spouse — not Chara/movable karka)

  • For a male chart: Sthira Darakaraka = Venus (primary) or Jupiter (secondary)
  • Note: Parashara says "nitya ke darakarke" not just "Venus" — confirms Sthira Karka, not just Venus alone

Condition: If Sthira Darakaraka (Venus or Jupiter) is placed in the sign of Moon

Result: Person becomes wifeless in old age

Verse — Exalted Lord of UL or Exalted Darakaraka → Noble Spouse

Condition: If lord of Upada is in exaltation sign, OR if Sthira Darakaraka (Venus/Jupiter) is in exaltation

Result: Wife will come from "Sukhula" — a good, respected family; wife will be beautiful and of good character

Linked verse: If the 2nd house from UL is associated with a benefic (functionally or naturally) → Jatasha sundari bharya = native's wife will be beautiful, well-disposed, endowed with good looks AND good character

Verse — Saturn and Rahu in 2nd from UL → Loss Through Scandal

Sanskrit: "Apavadatstiyasthago nashoh" = loss due to unfair blame/scandal

Condition: 2nd house from Upapada contains Saturn AND Rahu together

Result: Loss of wife/marriage through scandal, rumor, or unfair blame (Apavada = scandal/calumny), OR wife dies

Why Rahu?: Rahu = planet of scandals, bad reputation, social disgrace.
Why 2nd from UL?: 2nd = sustenance of the marriage. Saturn + Rahu draining/destroying it = marriage ends through disrepute or untimely death.
