Marana Karaka Sthana — Neutralised by Dignity

The class opens with a question left over from the previous class.

The question: Jupiter in the 9th of Navāṁśa

• Jupiter in the 9th of Navāṁśa is supposed to be good.
• But the 9th is Jupiter's Marana Karaka Sthana (the 3rd) counted from the 7th house — and the 7th is the Karya Bhava of Navāṁśa.
• Answer: give more importance to the karaka of the varga. For relationship and marriage that is Venus. It is Venus that must not be in Marana Karaka Sthana from the Karya Bhava; analyse Venus first.

Recap from the previous class

• Venus's Marana Karaka Sthana is the 6th. The 6th from the 7th is the 12th.
• So Venus in the 12th of Navāṁśa is bad for marriage.
• Last class a student's Navāṁśa had Venus in the 12th from Navāṁśa Lagna. He is happily married. On that basis alone the Navāṁśa Lagna was changed to one that fits him.
• A Navāṁśa Lagna lasts roughly 15–20 minutes of birth time. Changing it changes other divisional lagnas only where their boundaries overlap.

The rider: own sign, mūlatrikoṇa, exaltation

• If the planet in Marana Karaka Sthana is in its own sign, mūlatrikoṇa or exaltation, the Marana Karaka effect "tends to get neutralized".
• It does not vanish. Both are seen: the Marana Karaka effect, and its cancellation.

"It's not that it is not there. It is there, but it gets neutralized. But then you will see the effects of both."

• Example: Scorpio rising in Navāṁśa, Venus in the 12th. The 12th is Libra, Venus's mūlatrikoṇa. Venus gives the result of Marana Karaka Sthana and also the result of being in mūlatrikoṇa; the cancellation shows too.

Nīca-bhaṅga works the same way

• Check whether a debilitated planet gets nīca-bhaṅga. If its dispositor is exalted, that planet is the saviour.
• The debilitation shows its effect in the debilitated planet's own period. The change comes in the antardaśā of the planet that cancels the debilitation.
• For wealth, Jaimini says a planet exalted or debilitated gives wealth (tasmin ucce nīce vā śrīmantaḥ).

How to keep the sutras in mind

A student says there are too many rules to remember. The teacher's answer:

• Keep the book with you and go through 10–15 pages a day. Correlate each sutra with charts.
• Start every chart from the Navāṁśa. Someone is artistic — look for Mercury and Venus in trines. Someone is hot-headed — look for Mars in trines or vargottama.
• Discuss charts with others; what another person says sticks.
• Over time 20–30 key rules stay in the mind. For the rest, go back to the book.

How the Rāśi Houses Map to the Navāṁśa Kendras

Worked by hand in class, to show why Sutra 1.2.70 names the 4th house.

How Navāṁśa is built

• Each sign has 9 navāṁśas of 3°20′.
• Fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) start from Aries.
• Earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) start from Capricorn.
• Airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) start from Libra.
• Watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) start from Cancer.
• The count is continuous. Aries ends in Sagittarius navāṁśa; Taurus begins in Capricorn. Taurus ends in Virgo; Gemini begins in Libra.

Example: lagna at 16° Aries

16° is the 5th navāṁśa (3°20′, 6°40′, 10°, 13°20′, 16°40′). Every house cusp is at 16° of its sign, so every cusp falls in the 5th navāṁśa of its sign.

The same holds for any lagna degree. At 21° the cusps fall in the 7th navāṁśa (Aries lagna → Libra). At 24° Sagittarius the lagna falls in the 8th navāṁśa, Scorpio. The other trikonas again land on the kendras.

The four pillars

• Quick way to remember: in each trikona, pick the house that is a kendra — 1, 10, 7, 4.
• The kendras are the foundation, the pillars that hold the Navāṁśa.
• This is why Jaimini says malefics in the 10th of Navāṁśa cause instability in fortune and finances. The Artha Trikona maps to the 10th, so malefics there hit houses 2, 6 and 10 of the Rāśi chart.
• This is why 1.2.70 adds the 4th to the 12th for Ketu: the 4th is the kendra that carries the whole Moksha Trikona.

"So among the Moksha Trikona, which is 4, 8, 12, the 4th house becomes the Kendra, which becomes the pillar. And hence you give more importance to the 4th house."

Student's question: Ketu in the 4th, Rahu in the 10th

• Ketu in the 4th is good for moksha.
• Rahu in the 10th is bad for finances, unless that Rahu is weak and benefic, when it tends to give a lot of money.
• Heavy expenses usually go with heavy income, but not always. With Rahu the person may also run beyond his limits.

Sutras 1.2.67–1.2.71 — Authority, the 12th from Karakāṁśa, Liberation

Jaimini says svāṁśa, which covers both the Lagna's navāṁśa and the Atmakaraka's navāṁśa (Karakāṁśa). For inherent traits the class has preferred the Lagnāṁśa. For matters of the soul, prefer the Karakāṁśa.

1.2.67 — Jupiter in the 9th

• Text: Jupiter in the 9th indicates a big landlord or a distinguished personality.
• The 9th is a very important house of Navāṁśa; Jupiter is its karaka; the 9th shows higher authorities.
• Read "landlord" as a person of authority, one who will rise high. Usually wealthy too, subject to other factors.

1.2.68 — Benefics in the 12th

• Text: benefics in the 12th from svāṁśa take the soul to an auspicious world of the departed after death.
• Read from the Karakāṁśa. The 12th shows what one has to give up; benefics there are good.
• If the 12th is empty, take its lord, or the aspects on it.
• Later Jaimini names Jupiter, Mercury, Moon, Venus and Sun for the five auspicious worlds.

Caveats the teacher gives

• Not everyone who attains moksha has this. They tend to have it. Charts with malefics in the 12th also turn up.
• Benefic and malefic must be judged for the spiritual plane. For dharma and moksha, Sun and Ketu count as benefics (they also help marriage). Mars and Saturn do not.
• A planet's own amśa matters: Mars in a saumya ṣaṣṭyāṁśa cannot simply be called bad.
• "Keep an open mind and don't jump to conclusions."

Parasara's rule in the commentary — malefics in the 12th give expenses on unlawful and bad activities; benefics give legitimate expenses. This is about the 12th from Lagna, not Karakāṁśa — it concerns the person, not the soul. Example: a native with retrograde exalted Jupiter in the 12th spent on temples, pilgrimage and a car for his wife. The intentions were good.

1.2.69 — Ketu in the 12th

• Ketu in the 12th from Karakāṁśa gives final emancipation to the soul.
• This is where the Ishta Devata and moksha dictums taught earlier come from.

1.2.70 — Ketu in the 4th or the 12th

• If Ketu is in the 4th or 12th from Karakāṁśa, final emancipation is granted.
• The sutra adds the 4th because the 4th is the kendra of the Moksha Trikona (Part 2).
• Look at Ketu in the 4th, or benefics in the 4th, for the direction of the ātmā.

1.2.71 — Malefics in the 4th or 12th

• Malefics in these places deny deliverance from the cycle of rebirth.
• The teacher does not take this flatly. The Hindu system has many paths — some sāttvic, some malefic in nature, like the Aghoris. Be careful with such statements.
