Verses 8-15 — Results from Padas

11th from Pada = Fulfillment, 12th = Giving Up

• The 11th from any pada is fulfillment in that pada's area; the 12th is compromise, loss, giving up.
• 11th from A4 = getting the vehicle you wanted. 11th from A10 = fulfillment in career.
• The verse speaks of wealth and comfort, but it is not only for Arudha Lagna. Not every pada tells of wealth. Read it as: that pada gives strong, tangible results.

Śubha / Pāpa Means Functional

• Saumya and krūra = natural benefic and natural malefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury / Saturn, Mars).
• Śubha and pāpa = functional: lords of good houses (5th, 9th) and lords of bad houses (6th, 11th).
• A planet in the 9th is not the same as the 9th lord. The house owned is the planet's agenda — the goals written at the start of the year. The house occupied is the project it has been put on. Read "planet in lagna or the 9th" as "planet conducive to that house".
• 9th lord in the 8th may give sudden fortune; 8th lord in the 9th may break fortune or give sudden fortune. Which one depends on the planet's relationship with the lord and the karaka of the house it sits in.

Functional From Which Reference?

During the example a student proposed that śubha and pāpa be counted from the pada itself, not from lagna. PVNR agreed.

"Parashara is not explicit, but my take is basically what you said. Take the ownership from the pada."

• The pada is the reference from which the 11th is counted, so the lordship that makes a planet conducive is counted from it too.
• A planet conducive to your very being (lagna) need not be conducive to your attitude to learning or to career.

Rāśi Dṛṣṭi, Graha Dṛṣṭi, Argala

"Graha drishti is desire to influence, rashi drishti is natural access and ability to influence, whereas argala is a conclusive influence."

• Rāśi dṛṣṭi: access, like the man in the next cubicle who can walk over and talk to you.
• Graha dṛṣṭi: desire. Every planet desires the 7th from it; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th.
• Argala: literally a bolt. It is the QA sign-off without which the product is not released. So argala counts for more than graha dṛṣṭi.
• Exalted planet = an excited man, happy where he is. Debilitated planet = an unhappy man, who may still slog and achieve. An exalted planet with argala is a QA man back from a good party: he overlooks the minor bugs and signs.

Which Aspect Does Parashara Mean? Graha Dṛṣṭi

At the verse PVNR left it open ("let us conclude later"). The condition "aspects the 11th but not the 12th" settles it.

• Under rāśi dṛṣṭi movable signs aspect only fixed, fixed only movable, dual only dual. No planet ever aspects two adjacent signs. A planet could never aspect both the 11th and the 12th, so the condition would be empty.
• Under graha dṛṣṭi a planet can aspect both: Mars with the 7th and 8th aspects, and other planets by the three-quarter aspect on the 8th. A planet 7th from the 11th aspects the 11th fully and the 12th by three-quarters, and that spoils it.

"This particular directive, that it should be aspecting the 11th house but not the 12th house, very clearly means he is talking about graha drishti."

• So for padas: graha dṛṣṭi and argala. In practice too, graha dṛṣṭi on Arudha Lagna and on the lagna lord's graha arudha shows in the person.

Example chart

Lagna: Libra 19°26'; Moon: Cancer 16°05'

Placements (rasi): Sun, Mercury, Jupiter in Gemini (9th); Moon, Mars, Venus in Cancer (10th); Saturn in Sagittarius (3rd); Rahu in Aquarius (5th); Ketu in Leo (11th). Rahu is Atmakaraka.

Mercury's Graha Arudha — Pisces

• Mercury (9th and 12th lord) is in Gemini. He owns Gemini and Virgo. Gemini is stronger: it has more planets.
• Mercury to Gemini = 1 → 1st from Gemini = Gemini → cannot be the 1st → take the 10th = Pisces.
• As 9th lord: the 9th house is dharma, the 9th lord is the attitude to dharma, and his arudha is how the person seems to approach dharma.
• Take Pisces as lagna. Sun, Mercury, Jupiter in the 4th and Moon, Mars, Venus in the 5th have argala. Rahu in the 12th also has argala (counted in reverse for Rahu). Only Saturn and Ketu have none. 7 of 9 planets have argala on it.
• Mercury is also learning ability. The world sees an intelligent person.
• A student asked whether that is because it is Mercury. No — it is because that arudha has good influences, many planets in kendras and konas from it.

Rahu (Atmakaraka) Graha Arudha — Scorpio

• Rahu is in Aquarius, the sign he owns. Count = 1 → Aquarius again → take the 10th = Scorpio.
• From Scorpio: Saturn in the 2nd, Rahu in the 4th, Ketu in the 10th; Sun, Mercury, Jupiter in the 8th; Moon, Mars, Venus in the 9th.
• Lagna lord Mars is in the 9th, the house of dharma, with 9th lord Moon and 7th lord Venus, in Cancer, a sensitive sign. Venus is diplomacy and sweet behaviour; Moon is compassion.

"He will come across as a very compassionate warrior relating to dharma, relating to establishing dharma."

• The 8th from Scorpio is also strong, with the 8th lord (Mercury) and the 10th lord (Sun) there. There are negative influences too.
• So Mars and Moon dashas give one kind of result, Jupiter and Mercury dashas another.

Venus (Lagna Lord) Graha Arudha — Pisces

• Venus is in Cancer. He owns Libra and Taurus. Both are empty; neither has an exalted planet; Jupiter and Mercury aspect neither. Venus himself has rāśi dṛṣṭi on Taurus. Taurus is stronger.
• Cancer to Taurus = 11 → 11th from Taurus = Pisces. Not the 1st or 7th from Venus, so no exception. It is Venus's exaltation sign.
• This is how the native's basic attitude to life comes across.
• From Pisces the 4th and 5th are strong. But Sun is the 6th lord in the 4th — some negative impression about his attitude, a touch of quarrel. Saturn in the 10th is not a good placement.
• In one dasha the world may see his attitude as a little selfish, in another as very dharmic.

Ketu Dasha — Learning, Read from Mercury's Arudha

• From Pisces, Ketu is in the 6th (Leo). A natural malefic in the 6th from a pada is good.
• As a lord: Ketu owns Scorpio, the 9th from Pisces. 9th lord in the 6th — the class read out Parashara's verse: limited fortune, enemies.
• Why: the planet whose agenda is easy fortune is put in the house of struggle. The agenda is still good.
• Whether he delivers depends on relationships:
  • 9th karaka Jupiter — Ketu is neutral to good with him.
  • 6th lord Sun — Ketu does not like him.
  • 6th karaka Mars — Ketu imitates Mars but is not his friend.
• So Ketu will not give the 6th house results. He keeps to his own 9th house agenda, but from a house that does not support it: limited fortune.

Venus Dasha — Read from Mercury's Arudha

• From Pisces, Venus is the 8th lord in the 5th. 8th lord in the 5th is good for occult learning.
• This is seen from a graha arudha, not from lagna. So it cannot be said that he will learn occult subjects. It can be said that the world will see him as interested in them.

"World will think, oh, this guy is interested in astrology now, or he is interested in palmistry, or he is interested in some occult subjects."
