Mrityubhaga (Death-Inflicting Degree) — Definition, Controversy, D30 Root & Mundane New Year Charts: Hora Lord vs Vara Lord

Mrityubhaga: each planet has one 1-degree-wide death-inflicting range in each sign (9 planets × 12 signs = 108 ranges). Correct definition: "nth degree" = (n-1)° to n°. K.S. Charak's alternate view (n-0.5° to n+0.5°) — PVNR disagrees: "Bhaga = a portion rooted in D30; boundaries are at exact degree marks, not midpoints." In Tithi Pravesh charts: planet in Mrityubhaga + 8H links (in 8H, with 8L, aspecting 8H, or in A8) = serious suffering during that planet's dasha year. In natal chart: same combination = huge suffering, near-death, coma, or actual death with additional confirmations. Root in D30 (Trimshamsa): subconscious vulnerabilities → specific D1 degrees. Medical astrology: D6 (active diseases) + D30 (predisposition). Mundane astrology: PVNR critiques Vara-based planetary cabinet system as post-classical corruption. Preferred: Hora lord at the EXACT New Year event time. Different charts for different purposes: Sun-Moon in Pisces = general annual forecast; Sun-Moon in Libra (Deepavali) = financial/business New Year; Sun in Ardra = rainfall; Sun entering Aries = Tamil New Year. Hora lord of each event chart governs that domain. "These are non-aligned events — the king comes in March, the finance secretary comes in November. Different rulers for different domains."

"When the New Year starts, don't look at the Vara Lagna — look at the Hora Lagna, the planetary hour at that exact time. That is the real ruler of the period. The sunrise-based vara calculation is for celebration, not astrology."

Mrityubhaga (Death-Inflicting Degree)

Definition

Each planet in each sign has one specific degree (1° wide) that is considered fatal or death-inflicting when a planet occupies it. There are thus 9 planets × 12 signs = 108 Mrityubhaga degrees.

Correct interpretation (PVNR's, following the traditional definition):

  • When classics say "the nth degree is Mrityubhaga" → this means the range from (n-1)° to n°
  • Example: "18th degree" = 17°00' to 18°00'

K.S. Charak's interpretation (which PVNR considers incorrect):

  • "18th degree" = 17°30' to 18°30' (centered on the 18° point ± 0.5°)
  • His reasoning: like noon being a point with the maximum heat surrounding it

Why PVNR disagrees with Charak:

"'Bhaga' literally means a portion. So this is not a point but a range. And Trimshamsa (D30) divides each sign into 30 equal 1-degree portions. Mrityubhaga degrees have their roots in D30. The transition is at exact degree boundaries, not at degree midpoints."

— PVNR

Software note: Jagannatha Hora has options for all three interpretations (n-1 to n, n-0.5 to n+0.5, n to n+1).

How to Use Mrityubhaga

In Tithi Pravesh (Annual) Charts:

  • Planet in Mrityubhaga + linked to 8th house (in 8H, with 8L, aspecting 8H, or in A8) → that planet's dasha during the year will be bad
  • Cannot predict death from TP chart (you'd die every year), but → serious suffering or health crisis

In Natal Chart:

  • Planet in Mrityubhaga + 8H links → truly terrible dasha for that planet
  • Can indicate huge suffering, death-like situations, sudden severe diseases, or death itself (along with other confirmations)
  • PVNR: "I know cases where during such antardashas people went into coma, or suddenly cancer was discovered."

How to check: In Jagannatha Hora, in the main Basics window, right-click → "Show planets in Mrityubhaga" → shows how close each planet is to its Mrityubhaga.

Root in Trimshamsa

Mrityubhaga degrees are rooted in D30 (Trimshamsa), which shows one's subconscious vulnerabilities. Each 1° = one Trimshamsa partition. Physical diseases arise from subconscious vulnerabilities = D30. This is why specific degrees in D1 correspond to D30 dangers.

PVNR's medical astrology essentials:

  • Primary charts for diseases: D6 (Shashthyamsa) and D30 (Trimshamsa)
  • D6 shows active diseases; D30 shows vulnerability/predisposition
  • D12 is for parents, not diseases
  • Medical astrology must be rooted in Ayurveda: Jupiter/Venus = Kapha; Sun/Mars = Pitta; Saturn/Moon = Vata

Mundane Astrology — New Year Charts and PVNR's Approach

Traditional "Planetary Cabinet" Method (Vara-Based)

Traditional panchanga tradition assigns a "planetary cabinet" for the year:

  • King/Ruler: Determined by the weekday of the first sunrise after the New Year event
  • Minister, Commander, etc.: From other weekday lords of different charts

PVNR's critique: This is a post-classical (last 1000 years = "modern" in his view) corruption that is "totally suspect." Taking the next sunrise instead of the exact event time is for celebration purposes, not astrology. Taking the weekday lord (Vara lord) is less accurate than the Hora lord.

PVNR's Preferred Approach: Hora Lord

"When that exact event happens, the New Year started. Forget about the next noon or sunset or sunrise — those are for celebration. At that time, don't look at the Vara Lagna, look at the Hora Lagna, the planetary hour at that time."

— PVNR

Application:

  • For Iraq's New Year: Mercury was the Hora lord at the exact time → Mercury (8th lord in lagna, in Mrityubhaga) → massive death and destruction predicted
  • Different countries may have different Hora lords (determined by time zone) → different "kings" for different countries

Different New Year Charts for Different Purposes

EventChart Used For
Sun-Moon conjunction in Pisces (Lunar New Year)General annual forecast
Sun-Moon conjunction in Libra (Deepavali)Financial/business matters — governs next 12 months for finance
Sun entering AriesTamil calendar New Year, general forecast
Sun entering Ardra nakshatraRainfall and weather extremities for the year
Ashadha Shukla Pratipada (Sun-Moon in Gemini)Weather extremities, used in parts of Rajasthan/Gujarat
Sun-Moon conjunction in each of the 12 signsDifferent specialized charts for different purposes

Key insight: The Hora lord of EACH such chart governs that specific matter for the location and time period it covers. These different "planetary officers" are not all king/minister from the same chart — they are rulers of separate domains.

"Just as a king comes in March and goes the next March, the finance secretary may come in November and go till next November. These are all basically non-aligned events."

— PVNR
