Conditional Nakshatra Dashas — Complete Rules
All 9 conditional dashas (Dwi-Saptati, Shashti Hayani, Chaturashiti, Satabdika, Shatrimsha, Ashtottari, Dwadashottari, Shodasottari, Panchottari) with their conditions and priority rules. When two dashas both apply, rarity wins first, then total years. Why Panchottari (Cancer lagna in Rashi + D12) indicates starting a great lineage.
"Had we tried to explain with Vimshottari Dasha, things would not line up so well. With the right conditional Dasha, things line up perfectly."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Conditional Nakshatra Dashas: Comprehensive Rules
The Fundamental Principle
- All Nakshatra Dashas track the state of mind (based on Moon)
- Vimshottari = general state of mind
- Conditional Dashas = state of mind focused on a specific life theme dictated by the condition
Priority Rule for Multiple Applicable Dashas
- Rarity first: Give priority to the dasha applicable to fewer people (most specific condition)
- Years second: If two dashas are equally rare, use the one with more total years
Complete List of Conditional Dashas (with conditions)
| Dasha | Total Years | Condition | Rarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dwi-Saptati Sama | 72 | LL in 7H OR 7L in Lagna (Rashi only) | ~1/6 (17%) |
| Shashti Hayani / Shashti Sama | 60 | Sun in Lagna | ~1/12 (8%) |
| Chaturashiti Sama | 84 | 10L in 10H | ~1/12 (8%) |
| Satabdika / Shatabhika | 100 | Lagna in Vargottama | rare |
| Shatrimsha Sama | 36 | Daytime birth in Sun's Hora OR Nighttime in Moon's Hora | ~50% |
| Ashtottari | 108 | Daytime in Krishna Paksha OR Nighttime in Shukla Paksha + Rahu in trine/kendra from lagna | ~25% |
| Dwadashottari | 112 | Lagna in Navamsha of Venus | rare |
| Shodasottari | 116 | Lagna in Moon's Hora in Krishna Paksha OR Sun's Hora in Shukla Paksha | medium |
| Panchottari | 105 | Lagna in Cancer in BOTH Rashi and Dwadasamsha | very rare |
Priority examples:
- If Shashti Hayani (60y) and Dwi-Saptati (72y) both apply: Dwi-Saptati wins (higher years, similar rarity)
- If Shatrimsha Sama (50%, 36y) vs Dwi-Saptati (17%, 72y): Dwi-Saptati wins (rarer)
- If Chaturashiti (84y) vs Dwi-Saptati (72y) both equally rare: Chaturashiti wins (more years)
Hora Calculation for Dasha Applicability
- Odd signs: First half (0–15°) = Sun's Hora; Second half (15–30°) = Moon's Hora
- Even signs: First half (0–15°) = Moon's Hora; Second half (15–30°) = Sun's Hora
- Always verify daytime/nighttime against SUNRISE, not clock time
- Example: Sun in Leo at 6° = Odd sign, first half = Sun's Hora → Shatrimsha Sama dasha applicable
Panchottari Dasha: Special Significance
Cancer = sign of Brahma (creation). Dwadasamsha = chart of lineage.
- When Lagna is in Cancer in both Rashi and D-12, the person is beginning something grand that will last for a very long time
- Examples: Someone starting a Jyotish parampara, a great school, a dance institution
- Three benefic signs: Cancer = Brahma (creation), Libra = Shiva (transformation), Pisces = Vishnu (sustenance)
Vimshottari vs. Dwi-Saptati Sama
- Dwi-Saptati Sama = 72 years; "Sama" = all planets get equal portions (9 years each × 8 planets)
- Shows events from the angle of desire pursuit (7th house theme = strong desires)
- Can be used alongside Vimshottari — Dwi-Saptati shows desire angle while Vimshottari shows general mental perception
- For events like marriage and children: use Vimshottari (directly impacts mind)
- For career, pursuit of ambitions: Dwi-Saptati gives cleaner results when applicable
