Conditional Nakshatra Dashas: Comprehensive Rules

How the Topic Came Up

• PVNR starts with Vimshottari. The long cement job fell mostly in Vimshottari Rahu Dasha (1971–1989). Rahu is in Indra amsha of D-10, which should show a leader, yet the native had nobody reporting to him.
• A student asks whether Vimshottari should be started from Lagna. PVNR: standard Vimshottari works, but for a consistent result in this chart there is a better dasha, a conditional one.
• Kalachakra and Yogini dashas apply to everybody and have their own purposes. The rest of the list are conditional: each applies only when its condition is met in the chart.

The Fundamental Principle

• All Nakshatra Dashas track the state of mind (they are based on the Moon)
• Vimshottari = general state of mind
• A conditional Dasha also tracks the mind, but with a clear focus set by its condition
• The rules of interpretation are the same as for Vimshottari. Only the calculation differs.

Priority Rule for Multiple Applicable Dashas

1. Rarity first: the dasha that applies to a smaller share of people gets priority
2. Years second: if two dashas are equally rare, the one with more total years gets priority

"Any dasha that is not applicable to all the people, that is applicable to a small percentage, give that dasha priority."

Conditional Dashas Covered in Class

How Rare Is Each Condition

• Dwi-Saptati Sama: Lagna lord in 7th is 1/12; 7th lord in Lagna is 1/12; together 1/6 − 1/144. Roughly 1/6, about 16% of people.
• Shat-trimsha Sama: day birth (1/2) × Sun's Hora (1/2) = 1/4, plus night birth × Moon's Hora = 1/4. The two cannot overlap, so exactly half of all charts. Not rare. If any other conditional dasha applies, that one takes precedence.
• Chaturashiti Sama: 10th lord in 10th, 1/12. Uncommon.
• Panchottari: applies in very few charts.

In this chart two conditional dashas apply, Shat-trimsha Sama and Dwi-Saptati Sama. Dwi-Saptati is far rarer, so it is the dasha to use.

Hora Calculation for Dasha Applicability

"Sun's Hora" and "Moon's Hora" in these conditions are not the hour of the day. They are the D-2 halves of a sign.

• Even signs are female and lean to the Moon; odd signs are male and lean to the Sun. The first half of a sign goes to the planet the sign leans to.
• Odd signs: first half (0–15°) = Sun's Hora; second half (15–30°) = Moon's Hora
• Even signs: first half (0–15°) = Moon's Hora; second half (15–30°) = Sun's Hora
• Day or night is decided by SUNRISE and sunset, not by the clock. PVNR's case: a birth at 8:03 AM that someone called a day birth, when sunrise there was later. In some places sunrise is as late as 8:30 or 9:00 and sunset as early as 3:00.
• This chart: 10:55 AM is safely daytime. Leo is the 5th sign, odd; about 6° is in the first half → Sun's Hora. Paksha: Krishna (Krishna Tritiya).

Panchottari Dasha: Special Significance

Cancer = sign of Brahma (creation), the sign where things begin. Rashi = chart of physical existence; Dwadasamsha = chart of lineage.

• With Lagna in Cancer in both, the person begins something grand that will last a long time
• Examples: a scholar who founds a great Jyotish institute, someone who starts a great school of dance
• Three benefic signs: Cancer = Brahma, Libra = Shiva, Pisces = Vishnu. Libra is the 7th sign of the natural zodiac; Shiva shows marriage and also death.
• Some Puranas give the planetary positions at the time of creation, with Sun, Moon and several planets in Cancer
• Parashara, in the chapter on Raja Yogas, speaks of the charts of Brahma, Agni, Manu and Prajapati. Sun, Moon and Jupiter there stand for the soul, mind and intellect of the universe, not the physical bodies. PVNR says he does not claim to understand this fully.

Dwi-Saptati Sama: What It Tracks

• Saptati = 70; Dwi-Saptati = 72. "Sama" = equal: every planet gets the same share, 9 years × 8 planets. A dasha with unequal periods (Vimshottari: Sun 6, Venus 20) never has "Sama" in its name.
• The condition gives the focus. The 7th house is desire. Signs are situations; lords are the intelligence behind them. The 7th lord is the thinking part of desire.
• 7th lord in Lagna (or Lagna lord in 7th) = a person taken up with one strong desire
• So this dasha shows how and when desires are fulfilled
• For marriage and childbirth it may not give perfect results. Use Vimshottari for those: a wife or a child acts directly on the state of mind.
• A student notes Saturn in Lagna and the native's work with steel, as seen earlier with J.R.D. Tata. PVNR: good point.

9 years each, in the order Mars → Mercury → Jupiter → Venus → Saturn → Rahu → Sun → Moon:

• Mars: over at a very young age
• Jupiter: the cement job began in Jupiter–Sun (August 1971)
• Venus: the whole of it spent in that one job
• Saturn: 1984 to mid-1993; running when he reached the USA (Saturn–Saturn, February 1985)
• Rahu: 1993 – July 2002
• Sun: 2002 – 2011
• Moon: July 2011 – 2020
