Review of Lesson 79 — Two Navamshas Read in Class

The class opens with a recap: Jaimini's sutras are encoded, decoded with Katapayadi; then the effects of planets in Swamsa. Two students' charts are used to test last week's rules.

What is being read: only the nature of each planet touching the Navamsha lagna and what it imparts to the native. Not lordship, not functional nature.

"First you look at the nature of the planet, what it can give the native. Then we can see later on, we go to the Rashi, the Dasamsa, and see how it is placed and what yogas it is participating in."

A planet touches the Navamsha lagna by being in it, in a trine to it, by flanking it (kartari), or by aspecting it.

Chart 1 — Scorpio Navamsha (female, 1965)

Data read out in class: November 11, 1965, 8:07 PM, India. Rashi lagna Gemini.

Navamsha lagna Scorpio. No planet in the lagna.

• Trines: Saturn in the 5th (Pisces), Venus in the 9th (Cancer).
  • Saturn → success through hard work in any field.
  • Venus → artistic (the native used to paint; interior decoration is Venus too); an eye for detail, meticulous, good at critiquing — quality control. "Analytical" is Mercury, not Venus.
• Kartari: Jupiter and Mercury in the 2nd (Sagittarius), Ketu in the 12th (Libra). The planets flanking the lagna count as if they were in it.
  • A student objects that Ketu is a malefic, so it cannot be a śubha kartari. The teacher: benefic or malefic is not the question here. "What we are seeing is, is there a kartari or not? If so, then the characteristics of the planet will be imparted to the native."
  • Jupiter → reads a lot, knowledge in a wide variety of subjects, philosophy, religion.
  • Jupiter + Ketu → a tradition, a parampara. The native says she is the first in her family to study astrology. The teacher: it means she is learning from a tradition (SJC), or there may be a tradition in her own family she has access to.
• Aspects: Rahu (Aries, 6th) has rāśi dṛṣṭi on Scorpio. Rahu gives breaking of boundaries, chemicals, research. Whether it is put to good or bad use is judged from the Rashi and other charts, by the yogas the planet joins.
• Saturn in the 5th of Navamsha → stage fright. The native confirms it. Saturn's troubles hurt most in childhood; around 36, when Saturn matures, the weakness becomes a strength.

When the Planet You Expect Is Not There

• The exercise is "one of the most important and valuable tools in understanding a chart". A good businessman must show a strong Mercury, and trines to the Navamsha lagna are one place that strength shows.
• If you know the person is patient and hard-working, the chart is rectified, and Saturn is neither in a trine nor aspecting by rāśi dṛṣṭi — look for Vargottama. A Vargottama planet imprints the native the same way.
• A planet in the 10th house of Navamsha is a third route (Part 3).

Saturn — Karma, History, Hatha Yoga

• Saturn is the most misunderstood planet. Great tapasvis, asked to pick one planet they adore, would pick Saturn: he makes you pay the karmas stored in the sūkṣma śarīra, and paying is burning them.
• Story told in class: a very old guru, a strict traditionalist, gave a visitor a coin "to help him" clear his karma. The man's wife beat him and threw him out the same day. The guru could not see why people took his help so badly.
• A student asks how to see an interest in biographies. Biography is someone's past — history — and history is Saturn. Saturn is the planet of history and Purana.
  • In D-24, the 9th or the 9th lord under strong Saturn influence → may take a degree in history.
  • A strong Saturn also gives interest in yoga; Hatha yoga is all Saturn.

Lagna Lord Mars in the 7th of Navamsha (Chart 1)

A student's question: in this Navamsha the lagna lord Mars is in the 7th (Taurus, with Sun), which is Mars's Marana Karaka Sthana. Ketu, co-lord of Scorpio, is in the 12th.

• Lagna lord in the 7th: attached to the husband, led by him — "whatever you say, I will do", which can be in a good way.
• Ketu, co-lord, in the 12th: in marriage she tends to give.
• On Marana Karaka Sthana the teacher answers with the rule of Part 2: in a varga it is counted from the karya bhava, not from the lagna.
• Sun and Mars in the 7th also describe the husband's chart (see Part 6): he will have Sun and Mars strong — in his lagna, or tied to his lagna lord.

Chart 2 — Sagittarius or Scorpio Navamsha? (male, 1967)

Data read out in class: January 28, 1967, 10:45 AM, India. As given, the Navamsha lagna is Sagittarius.

Sagittarius Navamsha lagna (as given):

• No planet in the lagna or the 5th. Jupiter in the 9th (Leo) → knowledge, religion, spiritual interests; likes to read.
• No kartari. Rahu (Virgo, 10th) and Ketu (Pisces, 4th) aspect the lagna by rāśi dṛṣṭi → unconventional, breaks barriers. The native says he is "normal".
• Jupiter pulls toward dharma and rules; Rahu–Ketu pull the other way; one will dominate. Ketu sits in Jupiter's sign, and the nodes give the results of their lord, so Ketu supports Jupiter. Rahu in the 10th is bad for finance.
• Moon, Mercury and Saturn are in the 8th (Cancer). "It is in the 8th, so you don't have to worry about it."
• Mars is Vargottama (Libra in both) → logical, hot-headed.

The teacher does not take the native's word. People agree to any description because they did the thing once. So move the lagna one sign either way and see which fits better.

"I don't trust you, because people can say anything they want. If you tell anything, people will say, yes, I am that, because they might have done this once."

Scorpio Navamsha lagna (the time about 6 minutes earlier):

• Venus is in the lagna (Scorpio). Saturn (Cancer, 9th) and Ketu (Pisces, 5th) are in trines to it. Saturn + Venus + Ketu on the lagna → a tapasvi: hard-working, dedicated, works whatever the conditions. The native: "I am a hard worker."
• Venus in lagna → art. Asked twice, the native admits he drew and painted when young and won painting prizes in college. The teacher notes that Pt. Sanjay Rath also has Venus in Navamsha lagna and won painting prizes.
• Moon and Mercury also in the 9th trine (with Saturn): interest in business from Mercury, fluctuation and compassion from Moon, strictness from Saturn. Many influences — people see different shades of him, and it can show confusion. Good at mathematics.
• 7th house Taurus holds Sun → the wife will have Sun strong, in her lagna or trines or with her lagna lord.
• 7th lord Venus in the lagna → he tends to boss over his wife, "in a nice way". Lagna lord Mars in the 12th (Libra) → in marriage he gives and compromises. He has control and he gives.
• Jupiter in the 10th (Leo) → good for finance.

Why Sagittarius is rejected — the marriage test:

1. With Sagittarius lagna Venus is in the 12th of Navamsha — Marana Karaka Sthana for marriage (Part 2). The native is married with two children and the marriage is sound.
2. He married in 1996, in Moon–Rahu. With Sagittarius lagna Moon is the 8th lord of Navamsha, sitting in the 8th. The 8th lord in Navamsha is the marriage breaker: it is past karma falling due, paid through the marriage. A marriage begun in its dasha would not have survived.
3. With Scorpio lagna Moon is the 9th lord in the 9th and has rāśi dṛṣṭi on the 7th. Rahu in the 11th — the Kama trikona — aspects the 7th (Rahu's special graha dṛṣṭi; there is no rāśi dṛṣṭi from Virgo to Taurus).

"My contention is, had it been Sagittarius lagna, your marriage would not have survived."

• The chart had been rectified earlier in the course from the Dasamsa and other things. The teacher re-rectifies: move the time back by 6 minutes. The Dasamsa changes too.
• On the site the Scorpio Navamsha begins a little over 6 minutes before 10:45, so the rectified chart is cast for 10:38.

Key lesson: test the Navamsha lagna on the neighbouring signs, and use the marriage — whether it happened, in whose dasha, whether it lasted — to choose.

Marana Karaka Sthana in Varga Charts

Rule: in the Rashi chart, Marana Karaka Sthana is counted from the lagna. In a varga, count it from the karya bhava — the focus house of that varga.

Venus:

• Venus's Marana Karaka Sthana is the 6th (ṣaṣṭha Śukra).
• In Navamsha, 6th from the 7th = the 12th from lagna.
• Venus in the 12th of Navamsha is very bad for marriage — a bad marriage or none.
• Even in own sign? "That will modify it to a certain extent, but it is not desirable."
• Case: Scorpio Navamsha lagna, Venus in the 12th — in Libra, its moolatrikona. The person never married; jumped from one relationship to the next, wanted to marry, never did.

Rashi is different: per Pt. Sanjay Rath, Venus in the 12th of the Rashi chart is very good for marriage. In Rashi, planets in the 12th strengthen their karakatva — Moon in the 12th is affectionate and motherly; Sun in the 12th, though in Marana Karaka Sthana, still gives administrative ability.

The 8th Lord of Navamsha

• The 8th lord of Navamsha is the marriage breaker. It shows past karma that has come due; the payment is taken through the marriage.
• The exception is Venus in the 8th: Venus there tends to protect the marriage. In one chart with Venus in the 8th there were tensions but the marriage went on.
• Good aspects, the lagna lord or other good planets with it also help. "These things you should note — why it survived."

Weekday Counting from 10th House of Navamsha

Rule: a planet in the 10th house of Navamsha gives the results of another planet, as if that other planet were sitting in the Navamsha lagna. This holds only for planets in the 10th. Jaimini gives it in a later sutra.

Weekday order: Sun → Moon → Mars → Mercury → Jupiter → Venus → Saturn → Rahu → Ketu.

Method: give the planet in the 10th its own place in the order, the next planet the 11th, the next the 12th. The one that falls on the lagna is the planet whose results you get — the 4th in the order, counting the planet itself.

Examples from class:

• Jupiter in the 10th (Chart 2 with Scorpio lagna): 10th = Jupiter, 11th = Venus, 12th = Saturn, lagna = Rahu. Then read Rahu in lagna — research and the like.
  • The teacher first says "1st house is Sunday", then corrects himself: after Saturday come Rahu and Ketu.
• Mercury in the 10th: 10th = Mercury, 11th = Jupiter, 12th = Venus, lagna = Saturn. This is Jaimini's own sutra: Mercury joining or aspecting the 10th from Swamsa gives results like Saturn.
  • The person is hard-working and a traditionalist. It shows skill and fame and is good for fortune, Mercury being a natural benefic; like Saturn it promotes traditional vocations.
• Sun and Moon in the 10th (a student's own chart): Sun → Mercury, Moon → Jupiter.
• Two planets in the 10th (say Jupiter and Ketu): count for both. The strongest result dominates.

"Planets in the 10th house in Navamsa will basically give the results of another planet as if it is sitting on the lagna. And the way you see it is by using the weekday order."

Navamsha Trikona-to-Kendra Mapping (Critical Architecture)

A student says the 10th of Navamsha is karma with respect to dharma. The teacher: no — the trikonas work differently in Navamsha. Worked example:

• Each Navamsha is 3°20′. Fire signs start from Aries, earth signs from Capricorn, air signs from Libra, water signs from Cancer.
• Lagna at 15° Aries: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, then 13°20′–16°40′ = Leo.
• 15° Leo → Leo. 15° Sagittarius → Leo. The same degree in all three trines falls in the same Navamsha sign.
• 15° Taurus (the 2nd cusp) → 5th from Capricorn = Taurus; the other two Artha houses fall there too.

So for the Navamsha lagna:

• 1-5-9 (Dharma trines) → map to the lagna

• 4-8-12 (Moksha trines) → map to the 4th

• 3-7-11 (Kama trines) → map to the 7th

• 2-6-10 (Artha trines) → map to the 10th

• That is why the quadrants of Navamsha matter so much: they are the pillars that support the native.

• The 10th of Navamsha is therefore Artha — finance — "not karma or dharma".

• Malefics in a Navamsha kendra destroy the foundation. The 8th lord in any quadrant becomes strong, and a strong 8th lord in Navamsha wrecks married life.

• The teacher gives this as a short preview; detail and examples are promised for the next class.

"The kendras in Navamsha become the pillar that support you. And these kendras should not be affected by bad planets, otherwise your foundation is destroyed. That's why 8th lord in one of the quadrants will wreck marriage."
