Timing — When Argala Gives Its Result

Yatra rāśau sthitaḥ kheṭas tasya pākāntaraṁ yadā, tasmin kāle phalaṁ jñeyaṁ nirviśaṅkaṁ dvijottama.

• The second line is clear: at that time the result is to be known without any doubt.
• The first line the teacher is "not 100% confident" of. His reading: when the pāka or antara — the antardaśā — of the rāśi occupied by the planet causing argala comes.
• It is the sign, not the planet. Parāśara is referring to rāśi daśās: Chara daśā, and Nārāyaṇa daśā as its generalisation.
• One may extend this to the antardaśā of the planet itself in Vimśottarī or another graha daśā. That is an extension, not what the verse says.
• Which antardaśā, when the argala planets sit in several signs? One of those signs. Parāśara does not say which. The sign with more planets, or the stronger planet, may dominate — to be inferred.

"Without any doubt we can make predictions — if only we can compute the rāśi daśā accurately."

Scope — Any Chart, Not Only the Rāśi Chart

• A student asks whether Parāśara said "rāśi chart". He did not.

"When he doesn't say something, we are free to interpret. My interpretation is it applies to navāṁśa, it applies to daśāṁśa, it applies to any chart where there are signs and planets in signs."

• Tithi Praveśa charts too. Parāśara does not discuss them in the available text, but nothing restricts argala to the birth chart. A strong argala on the 10th of a Tithi Praveśa chart gives a rigid result in karma that year; the magnitude is smaller because the window is one year.
• Navāṁśa is the protection one enjoys from the gods for the good done in past lives — the chart of blessings. Argala on its 9th house shows the rise of fortune (bhāgyodaya).

George W. Bush — Rāśi Chart

Placements — rāśi, Cancer lagna

• Lagna Cancer with Saturn, Mercury, Venus. Mars in Leo (2nd). Moon and Jupiter in Virgo (3rd). Ketu in Scorpio (5th). Rāhu in Taurus (11th). Sun in Gemini (12th).
• Āruḍha Lagna in Scorpio. A6 in Pisces (9th house). A8 in Sagittarius (6th house).
• The birth data is not read out in this class. The site casts the chart used in the earlier Bush classes (July 6, 1946, New Haven); every placement above is reproduced.

Lagna — nothing significant

• 2nd: Mars. Obstructed by the Sun in the 12th. One against one.
• 11th: Rāhu. For a node the 11th is a bādhā sthāna, not an argala sthāna.
• 5th: Ketu. For a node the argala sthāna is the 9th; the 5th is its bādhā sthāna. No argala.
• 3rd: Moon and Jupiter. Both benefics (Moon by śukla pakṣa, born on Śukla Aṣṭamī), so no viparīta argala.
• "There aren't any significant argalas on the lagna, the true self."

Āruḍha Lagna (Scorpio) — two planets, madhyama

• 11th from Scorpio: Jupiter and Moon in Virgo. The 3rd from Scorpio is empty. Unobstructed — "an unobstructed Gajakesarī argala".
• Mars in the 10th from AL obstructs nothing: the 4th from AL is empty (kramāt). The 2nd, 4th and 5th from AL are all empty.
• From lagna Jupiter and Moon are the 9th lord and lagna lord in yoga. From AL, Jupiter is the 5th lord.
• Functional nature for Cancer lagna: Moon benefic, Jupiter (6th and 9th lord) neutral. Both give full results.
• The teacher's software did not show this argala. It applies the old rule, reversing every count on a sign occupied by Ketu, and AL has Ketu in it. He will add Parāśara's rule as an option.

10th house (Aries) — four planets, uttama

• 4th from Aries: Mercury, Venus, Saturn in Cancer. The 10th from Aries is empty. Unobstructed.
• 5th from Aries: Mars in Leo. The 9th from Aries is empty. Unobstructed.
• Rāhu in the 2nd from Aries: no argala, a node counts in reverse. The Sun in the 3rd: one malefic, not viparīta argala.
• Four planets on the house of karma.

"More than image, the work that he does has the strongest argala. He will do something big."

• Pada has argala from two planets and mada from four. Pade lagne made vāpi: very famous and very fortunate.

Who gives full, who gives half (Cancer lagna)

• By natural benefic and malefic the result would be reversed.
• Saturn, Mercury and Venus occupy lagna, so their argala on the 10th counts for more than that of Mars.

Timing by the daśā

• The teacher uses the daśā he normally uses for this chart — "the 7th lord is in lagna" (the condition for Dvisaptati Sama daśā; the antardaśā order and dates he reads out fit it). Jupiter daśā is running.
• Jupiter–Jupiter (to June 2001): elected November 2000, sworn in January 2001. Jupiter has argala on AL. Jupiter alone would not have done it; with the Moon the argala is at least madhyama.
• Jupiter–Saturn (ends September 2003): March–April 2003, the decision to go to war with Iraq — "the biggest karma of his presidency". Saturn has argala on the 10th, gives full results and sits in lagna.
• Jupiter–Mars (2007): 10th lord with argala on the 10th and a functional benefic. Some big karma again, perhaps not to Saturn's level since Saturn is also in lagna.
• By signs: the antardaśās of Cancer and Leo (argala on the 10th) and Virgo (argala on AL) are the important ones in a rāśi daśā.

George W. Bush — Navāṁśa, Argala on the 9th House

Placements — navāṁśa, Scorpio lagna

• Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Rāhu in Leo (10th). Sun in Aries (6th). Venus in Pisces (5th). Mercury in Sagittarius (2nd). Ketu in Aquarius (4th).
• The 9th house is Cancer. Leo is the 2nd from it.

The count

• Mars, Jupiter, Moon, Saturn in the 2nd from the 9th house: four planets in argala.
• Rāhu is with them in the 2nd. For a node the 2nd is a bādhā sthāna. Rāhu obstructs.
• 4 − 1 = 3. Still uttama.
• If Rāhu is judged weak — in Leo, outnumbered by that company — he does not count as an obstructor at all (nirbala) and it is a four-planet argala.
• The 4th, 5th and 11th from Cancer are empty. No other argala.

"Whenever Jupiter and Rāhu are together, or Sun and Rāhu, or anybody and Rāhu — if they are supporting it, he is only obstructing it, according to what Parāśara taught."

• A student works out the other houses: from Leo, Rāhu causes argala on Virgo (he is in its 12th) and on Scorpio (in its 10th), and bādhā on Cancer (in its 2nd) and Taurus (in its 4th). Count from the house, not from Rāhu.

Functional nature (Scorpio navāṁśa lagna)

• Conclusion: extremely fortunate. In navāṁśa this matters even more than in rāśi.

Antardaśās

• Jupiter: a functional benefic with argala on the 9th — very fortunate. He got the presidency.
• Rāhu (September 2003 – October 24, 2004, ending just before the election): the one planet trying to break his fortune. "If at all there is any minor chance of losing the fortune, it is during the Rāhu period." Much was written against him and popular opinion drifted away.
• Sun (from late October 2004): re-elected. In the rāśi chart the Sun has unobstructed argala on the 9th house.
• Mars (2007): lagna lord with the 9th and 5th lords in the 10th, with strong argala on the 9th — so, fortunate. A student points out that Mars (in Leo) and the Sun (in Aries) are in parivartana. The teacher accepts it: the Sun may already have given Mars's fortune at the re-election, and Mars will then give the Sun's results, so Mars's own period need not show great fortune.

Parivartana and functional nature

• A student asks whether an exchanged planet is judged by its own lordship or by the other's.
• Mars first behaves as Mars. Once the parivartana is triggered he acts as though he were the Sun in that place — here the 10th lord in the 10th, a neutral, which still gives the full result.
• When the trigger is pulled is hard to say; in the past he has used the matching antardaśā or pratyantardaśā.

Bush — A8 and A6: Trouble and Enemies

8th house and A8 (kaṣṭa)

• The 8th house (Aquarius) has no argala.
• A8 is in Sagittarius, the 6th house. Ketu in Scorpio is in the 12th from it — an argala sthāna for a node — and it is unobstructed.
• One planet only: kaniṣṭha. "Little result. Not even half result. Maybe one-fourth."
• The daśā in use has no Ketu antardaśā, so Rāhu gives this: some tangible trouble and hard work in the year before the 2004 election. Minimal.

A6 (enemies in tangible form)

• A6 is in Pisces, the 9th house. So the argala on A6 is the same argala as on the 9th house.
• Sun in Gemini — 4th from Pisces. The 10th from Pisces is empty. Unobstructed.
• Rāhu in Taurus — 3rd from Pisces. The 3rd is an argala sthāna for a node.
• Ketu in Scorpio — 9th from Pisces. For a node this is the equivalent of the 5th.
• Mercury, Venus, Saturn in Cancer — 5th from Pisces. Ketu in the 9th does not obstruct them; he is in argala himself.
• Six planets, all unobstructed.

"It's more than what anybody would consider as maximum. It's 200%."

• The strongest part is Mercury, Venus and Saturn: three together, and in lagna. Their antardaśās bring the most enemies. June 2001 – September 2003 (Venus and Saturn antardaśās): he made many enemies.
• The same six planets have argala on the 9th house. Counting the trines: lagna 0, the 5th (Scorpio, where AL is) 2, the 9th 6 — eight in all.

"He is a guy who has a lot of fortune, great fortune, but at the same time, a lot of enemies."

• Sun antardaśā (after the 2004 election): fortune is safe by rāśi and by navāṁśa, yet in the year after the election there is still rivalry and fear from enemies. Parāśara's word for the 6th is śatru-bhaya, fear from the enemy.
• Mars has no argala on A6. Mercury does: his antardaśā in 2008, the last year in office, can bring new enemies.

Homework and What Comes Next

Homework — Nārāyaṇa daśā

• There was no time to check a rāśi daśā in class. At home: run the Nārāyaṇa daśā of the rāśi chart, and Parāśara's Chara daśā, and look for correlation.
• Starting point: he was running Pisces daśā. The election of November 2000 fell in the Cancer antardaśā — the sign whose planets cause argala on the 9th and 10th houses. Cancer, Leo and Virgo are the important signs for him.

Next classes

• From the next class: about 45 minutes to an hour on Parāśara, then an example chart as before.
• Probably the closing chapters first — doṣas and the remedies Parāśara himself gives: birth on Saṅkrānti, Amāvāsyā, Chaturdaśī, Gaṇḍānta and the like. (Parāśara does not mention Kāla Sarpa yoga.)

"If somebody is born with a specific doṣa in the chart, that can override everything. You may see great yogas, but he may be suffering like anything."

• These are to be seen first and the remedy suggested, so that the yogas in the chart start to function.

Guru Pūrṇimā

• Pray to Vyāsa — Oṁ vyāṁ vedavyāsāya namaḥ — or with any guru mantra, or to the ṛṣis by name: Oṁ parāśarāya namaḥ, Oṁ jaiminaye namaḥ.
• Every Pūrṇimā is good for worship of Satyanārāyaṇa: Oṁ namo bhagavate satyadevāya.
